Zero Hours contracts (ZHC) Zero Hours contracts (ZHC) have been around for years, but have hit mainstream media recently. This is mainly due to large businesses coming to light for using such contracts. Sport Direct, is being taken to Court by a former employee over this contract. Domino’s Pizza UK, who are reported to have over 90% of their workforce on such contracts. Burger King, McDonald’s and Sub-Way widely use ZHC. These are mainly franchises, and apparently there is nothing currently to stipulate, within the franchise contractual agreements, that individual branches will not operate with these zero hour contracts. Ironically GLL a large health and fitness organisation are happy to use such contracts, how well is this for their workforce? Greggs the Bakers is proud to use a minimum of 12-15 hour contracts for their employees. “To have a flexible workforce to call on for a business is obviously very attractive but we have certain values with our business, especially with looking after our staff and helping in the community. The idea of having zero-hours contracts doesn’t fit in with that at all. I can understand why it would be attractive but it’s not something we do, Roger Whiteside Chief Executive.” Homebase, B&Q, Pret a Manger,Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, John Lewis, Marks and Spencer, Argos, Next and Waitrose, confirmed they do not use the zero hour contracts. These are the places to shop. There is a time and place to use ZHC, this can be highly beneficial for the client, and professional such as independent businessmen and women. Such as those who provide a specific service consultant/ accountant/builder/decorator/Caterers. These

are just a few examples but not an exhaustive list. Independent businesses, sole traders should be able to take advantage of such contracts as the cost of hiring someone on a minimum hours contract may not be feasible. What is the solution? • No zero hours for any franchises? • A minimum amount of workforce permitted to be on ZHC? A minimum set of hours must be stipulated nothing below 12 hours for businesses, especially if they have more than one branch and belong to a multi-million pound organisation. Surely Article 3 of the ECHR: Prohibition of torture can be exercised “No one shall be subjected to torture or to inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.” After all not knowing how many hours you are going to work, will have a detrimental effect on people’s health, mental stability and more importantly their finances. The former Sports Direct Employee left her job due to ill health, which was triggered due to a lack of financial stability leading her to have panic attacks. Mental health is becoming a big issue and such practices are just not helping peoples well being. Individuals will not be able to rent, get a mortgage, finance or look to the future. Our current financial situation, especially for the working classes is presently fairly bleak, where the cost of living has increased over the years but the average wages have stayed pretty much the same. ZHC is lining the pockets of businesses at the expense of those who are desperate to make some kind of a living. At the end of the day the employee gets no sick pay, holidays, regular income. The government needs to step in and take drastic action; ZHC should be an exception to the rule, and most definitely not the norm!

Nan’s Little Night-Time Stories by Joan C White The adventure of two nails

This story was about two nails that meet and the spiders that help them get back home. This story was longer than I expected but that was ok as I enjoyed it. I really liked it because of the team work involved. The bit I enjoyed most was when all the spiders worked together and hauled the nails back to their home on the stairs.

Princess Primrose

Charlotte The book was very well described and once I Editor CnC Page started reading it, I couldn’t stop until I found out what happened at the end. It is like nothing that I have read before, all of the stories are wonderful, while I read the book I could imagine a story happening. I read the Princess Primrose story in which they played piggy in the middle, and I still play that now. By Chloe

No means no - Make sure your child understands that they have the right to say “no” to unwanted touch - even to a family member or someone they know or love. Talk about secrets that upset you - Your child needs to feel able to speak up about a secret that’s worrying them and confident that saying something won’t get them into trouble.

At a time of local National and international doom and gloom, I introduce Waltham Forest’s Youth Independent Advisory Group (YIAG) who work with the Council and the police, influencing policy and making sure the voice of young people is heard when it comes to making important decisions. Archangel Raphael

Archangel Raphael is the Angel of Healing. He is also called the chief of guardian angels & the patron of travellers. He is one of the seven ‘ruling angels’ and one of only three angels mentioned by name in the Bible (the other two are Gabriel & Michael). He is often depicted carrying a bowl of healing essence in one hand and a staff shaped into a caduceus (with intertwining serpents) which later became a symbol of the medical profession. He connects to the energy of the emerald crystal. Healing means to become whole and this can be seen as becoming one with ourselves, and with the world. For this to happen, there needs to be a flow of energy between body, mind soul and spirit with each of them acting in harmony. There is more understanding emerging about the relationship between illnesses & ‘dis-ease’ in the body & our mental/emotional wellbeing. Our emotions & mental attitudes have a

14

direct influence upon our health, depleting our immune system and exacerbating underlying weaknesses which can lead to illness and disease. You can ask for Raphael’s help to guide you on your path to wholeness. He empowers you to help yourself and to find solutions, whether this is a change of life-style or attitudes, or to find the right healers or remedies that can assist you in moving forwards in your life. Raphael’s healing works on all levels, from physical ailments to releasing stress and resolving emotional issues & you can call on him to help you & those working with you whether this is through conventional treatments e.g. asking him to guide the surgeons hand or complementary therapies. He can also be called on to heal conflicts, wars & planetary healing. Raphael works strongly at the emotional level and you can call on him to assist you in resolving all relationships including how we relate to ourselves, the world and others. Emotional difficulties often stem from childhood and it is important to work these through and heal them, and until we do we will be confronted by life experiences which bring these issues up in one form or another. This is the true nature of karma - we meet aspects of ourselves in others which are mirrored back to us until we accept & integrate those parts. Raphael works with the green ray of healing which is in the centre of the spectrum of colour, hence the colour of balance, at the heart centre - also the middle chakra of the 7 major chakras of the body. His energy is soothing & peaceful, though it can also be very powerful & really get to the heart of the issue. For self healing, sit quietly and listen to your breathing, allowing it to become slower & deeper. Send roots of white light down from

your feet into the earth to ground your energy and imagine a bubble of light all around you to protect you. Touch your heart centre and ask Archangel Raphael to bring a sphere of green light. See feel or sense this entering into your heart centre and gradually spreading out to fill the whole of your being and surrounding you with its healing force. You may feel the comforting presence of Archangel Raphael with you, you may be given insights into the causes of your condition and how you can help yourself improve it. Healing can be sent to others in this way, imagining the person receiving the green sphere of light but it is important to first ask the permission of the person so that you do not interfere with their free will. Another way to receive Archangel Raphael’s healing is to ask to be taken to his healing chamber - this is above Fatima, Portugal. You can do this in meditation (first ground & protect yourself as above) or ask to be taken their

in your sleep state, you can also ask to take someone with you who needs healing (with their permission). The healing chamber is often experienced as a white marble room with a plinth of quartz crystal which is surprisingly comfortable to lie on. There you will have beams of healing light sent to you by Archangel Raphael and his healing angels. You will be brought back to conscious awareness when the healing session is complete. I have completed a 2 year training in Archangel Enlightenment with Hazel Raven, author of The Angel Bible http://www.hazelraven.com & the information in this article is gleaned from her writings. The Plebs League started with a student strike at Ruskin College & education in Marxism for trade unionists. The space for independent working class education had been defined by the 1870 Education Act & the compulsory schooling it introduced. It aimed to stamp out alternative education associated with the early radical & labour movement. Keith will look at this lost tradition of radical education in the British working class & reflect on what it might mean for the Left today.
