LIGHTEN UP! without NUTS

Late 2023, we were approached by Gemma Martin, a talented Leyton House colourist, who brought a serious health concern to our attention regarding the use of our blonding creams. Gemma has a severe nut allergy, which posed a significant health risk, particularly as blonding is one of the most commonly requested services in salons.

Understanding the gravity of this issue, we immediately collaborated with both Gemma, our director and chemists to explore alternative oil formulations. Our goal was to ensure that our products remain safe without compromising on performance. After thorough research and testing, we are proud to announce the release of our Alpine & Charcoal Blonding Creams, now with jojoba oil as a safe and effective substitute to almond oil.

The two combined ingredients Avocado and Jojoba oils ensures the same high-quality results while prioritising the safety of customers and stylists.

We extend our deepest gratitude to Gemma for her invaluable feedback, which was instrumental in bringing about this important change.

PPD & PTD

UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERENCES

PPD (Para-Phenylenediamine) and PTD (ParaToluenediamine), both commonly used in permanent hair colour, but they differ in their chemical structure and benefits.

Below is a comparison to help understand the distinctions between the two:

5. COVERAGE

PPD: Essential for achieving darker shades and natural results. PPD is the most effective ingredient for full grey coverage particularly excellent for stubborn grey.

PTD: More commonly found in colour that aims to balance performance with reduced risk of irritation. Results are milder, softer and best used for lighter colours.

Which One Should You Choose?

Choose PPD if:

You want deep, long-lasting, and vibrant colour. Clients don’t have a history of skin sensitivities or allergies to hair colour.

Choose PTD if:

Client has sensitive skin or has experienced allergic reactions in the past.

EASILY IDENTIFY SHADES

1. CHEMICAL STRUCTURE:

PPD (Para-Phenylenediamine) : A small, aromatic compound with two ‘amine’ groups. More reactive during the oxidative process, which gives it strong colouring properties.

PTD (Para-Toluenediamine): A derivative of PPD with a methyl group attached to the aromatic ring. Less reactive and less potent than PPD.

2. COLOUR INTENSITY

PPD: Produces deeper, richer intensity to colour. Particularly effective for black, brown, or darker tones. Preferred for achieving vibrant, long-lasting results.

PTD: Offers a range of lighter and less intense colours. May not be as effective as PPD for darker shades.

3. ALLERGY RISK

PPD: People with sensitive skin or a history of allergies are more likely to react to PPD. Strict skin/patch testing is essential before use.

PTD: Less allergenic alternative. However, PTD can still cause reactions in some people, so skin/patch testing is still necessary.

4. LONGEVITY

PPD: Longer-lasting, fade-resistant results due to stronger oxidative properties.

PTD: May not offer the same level of durability as PPD.

CONTAINING PPD OR PTD

Located on the back of each colour carton, is the ingredients, see under the ingredients letters A, B, C, or D.

'A' indicates PTD + 'B' indicates PPD

OF BALAYAGE!

CROWNED QUEEN Lauren Clements

From highschool pipedreams to reality: Lauren Clements talks to Mandy Jolly, Director of Global Cosmetics Group/ Leyton House Professional, in an exclusive interview.

What started as a youthful dream in the hallways of high school has blossomed into a successful career for Lauren Clements . We chat about her inspiring journey of transforming passion into profession and the people who helped make it possible.

Q: How long have you been a hairdresser?

A: I’ve been a hairdresser since I finished school in 2011, so it’s been over a decade now. My passion for hair and beauty started at a very young age, I always knew this was the career path I wanted to pursue, and it’s been incredibly rewarding to turn something I’ve always loved into a profession.

Over the years, I’ve worked hard to refine my skills, keep up with trends, and provide clients with styles that make them feel confident and happy.

Q: Whats been your career highlight as a hairdresser and why did you choose to open your own salon?

A: My biggest career highlight has been achieving a long-standing dream: opening and owning a own salon Hair by Lauren C. This was a personal 10-year goal that I was thrilled to accomplish in 2024. It’s truly given me a fresh perspective on life

and career. Taking the leap to buy was a massive milestone and an equally big risk. The journey started during the challenging COVID period, which added layers of complexity. That’s when all the planning, budgeting, and hard work really kicked in to make my vision a reality.

I’ve carried forward invaluable experience and knowledge gained from previous salons I’ve worked and every lesson learned has helped shape the foundation for my own business. Opening my salon has not only been a professional milestone but also a deeply personal one, representing years of dedication, perseverance, and belief in my dream and really to me was the next step in my career.

Q: What advice would you give new hairdressers starting out?

A: My top bit of advice is to maintain consistency in your work approach and actively promote yourself on social media. Social media has been an invaluable tool for me in showcasing my skills and attracting new clients. By regularly sharing your work online, you can build a strong portfolio and reach a wider audience.

I also found success by offering in-salon promotions through social media, which helped to draw in new customers. From there, word-of-mouth referrals became one of the most powerful forms of advertising for my business. So, stay consistent, stay visible, and let your work speak for itself!

Q: How have you managed a balanced work and home life?

A: I’m incredibly fortunate to have amazing support, especially from my mum. She’s been an absolute godsend, helping me so much with our two boys. Honestly, I couldn’t do what I love without her. Having her by my side has allowed me to dedicate time to my career while also ensuring my boys are well taken care of. My mum and I have a very close relationship; we talk every day, and she’s such an integral part of our lives. In fact, we’ll probably FaceTime right after this interview.

Q: What drives your passion?

A: It’s honestly the love and passion I have for all things hair. I also love my clients and the friendships I’ve made through my career. We go through marriages, babies, separations, and so much more together. Its not just a job!

Lastly Lauren, Why did you choose to use Leyton House?

A: That’s an easy one! I was first introduced to Leyton House while working in a salon that was trialling the colour. Naturally, I tried it too and was instantly hooked. The results were amazing, and I’ve never looked back.

I’ve been using Leyton House for nine years now, and I can’t imagine switching to anything else. The products are incredibly easy to use and formulate, which has been a game changer for me, especially as I’ve opened my own salon, the products are really affordable and they help me achieve consistent, high-quality results for my clients.

Right now, I’m absolutely loving the new Liquid Jewlz gloss toners. They’re a standout for me because they last so much longer than other brands, giving my clients that vibrant, glossy finish they adore. Leyton House has truly been an integral part of my success, and I’m so glad I discovered it when I did.

We at Leyton House would like to extend our excitement of the pending wedding of Lauren and Jamie for June14th 2026.

We couldn’t be happier for you and your family.x

THRIVING STUDIO BUSINESS

Gemma Martin

A little about Gemma & Gemstone's Studio .

Over the last 15 years, Gemma has been building her knowledge and expertise either working in salons or running her own mobile business.

Her journey’s been both rewarding and inspiring, allowing her to connect with clients and continually refine her craft. In 2019, her freelance business began to thrive, and by the summer of 2020, Gemma dedicate more time to growing the business. This led to the creation of Gemstone's Studio.

Q: What challenges have you faced

throughout your career, and how have you overcome them?

A: My biggest challenge was not feeling like I’d found my ‘salon home.’ I began hairdressing at 14 and worked in various salons early on, but I often felt something was missing and couldn’t fully be myself.

In 2017, I finally found my place at Winslow’s of Shenfield in Essex, a small, family salon where I grew into the hairdresser and businesswoman I am today, thanks to the support of owner David Winslow and my amazing colleagues. During the pandemic, I took the leap to start my own business, Gemstone’s Studio. While launching in lockdown was tough, I used that time to master the essentials of running a business, from finances to website creation. Now, five years later, I’m proud to have built a welcoming community through Gemstone’s Studio, and I’m grateful for everything that led me here.

Q: What advice would you give to hairdressers starting out?

A: It’s exciting to share advice, especially as I began my teaching journey in May 2024 with Halls of Ivy Academy after qualifying as a tutor. My key points of advice would be:

1. Be yourself. Not every client or workplace will feel like the right fit, and that’s okay. Stay true to who you are, and you’ll find the clients and salon that align with you.

2. Hairdressing is more than a job. It’s a life skill that allows you to make people feel beautiful, not just on the outside but on the inside too. Building trust and a bond

with your clients is one of the most rewarding parts of the job. Being called Gemma, not just “the hairdresser,” is my personal “I’ve made it” moment.

3. Teamwork matters. Collaboration and resilience go hand in hand. When things get tough, dust yourself off, and remember tomorrow is a new day.

4. Trust yourself. Believe in your skills, your journey, and your choices. Self-trust is the foundation for building trust with your clients.

Q: Who inspires you in the creative field?

A: That’s a tough one! I wouldn’t say there’s a well-known figure in the hairdressing world who inspires me specifically, does that sound bad?

they’re always beside me.

Q: What are your plans for the next 12 months?

A: On a personal level, I have many exciting plans, hopes, and possibilities lined up for 2025, but I’m keeping them under wraps for now, to avoid jinxing them!

In my teaching journey, I aim to complete my assessor qualification and continue improving my skills to benefit both myself and students. As for Gemstone’s Studio, my focus is on growing and developing as a hairdresser, seeking new opportunities to enhance both myself and my business

I want to step out of my comfort zone, connect with others in the hairdressing

Instead, my inspiration comes from the people I’ve worked with and those closest to me. Early on in my career, I was inspired by a few stylists I worked closely with as a junior. I admired how they worked, the beautiful results they created, and the strong relationships they built with their clients. Later, my last employer and co-workers reignited my passion for hairdressing. Their family-like salon created a warm and loving atmosphere where I could truly be myself, and it inspired me to do the same for others.

I’m also lucky to have three amazing best friends in hairdressing whose resilience, hard work, and achievements continually motivate me. Beyond hairdressing, my parents, boyfriend, brother, nan, close family, and friends are my greatest support system. I feel so grateful knowing

industry, and grow my social media presence. I also plan to create a five-year roadmap for what I hope to achieve by 2030 while staying flexible and realistic. It’s okay if things take longer or need adjusting!

Most importantly, I’m incredibly grateful to be living the dream I set for myself five years ago, and I’m excited for what’s to come.

Gemma is an inspiration to her peers and we wish her all the success for her future. We’re sure we’ll be seeing more of Gemma in the industry and finalist awards. x

Taking Care OF YOUR BODY AND MIND

Everyone’s has a story to tell, and trust me, no two stories are the same. Some people are running marathons at 50, while others (me) are just trying to remember where they put their glasses… which are usually on my head.

But here’s the deal: when it comes to taking care of your body, you’ve gotta start young. Take it from this fabulous 50-something, I’ve learned the hard way that the body doesn’t bounce back the way it did in my 20s. Back then, I could pull an all-nighter, go to work and still hit the dance floor. Now? One late night and I need three business days to recover.

So, no matter your age, here are my TOP TIPS for taking care of YOU while at work. Because trust me, your future self will either thank you... or write you a very angry letter.

1. POSTURE

No excuses for this one, folks. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent—like you’re about to bust a move, but instead, you’re busting out killer hairdos.

And don’t slouch or lean forward for hours on end like you’re trying to kiss the mirror. Keep that back upright! How many times have you heard this? I know, I know, I sound like a broken record... but guess what? Even broken records don’t have back pain.

2. TOOLS

For goodness’ sake, there are so many lightweight tools on the market these days that even your Instagram algorithm is practically screaming, “BUY ME!” I get it— you’re emotionally attached to your 1980’s blow dryer. It’s been with you through thick and thin (and maybe some questionable bangs), but let’s face it: your shoulders are staging a full-blown rebellion. LET IT GO, LET IT GOOOO (yes, I did sing that in Elsa’s voice). It’s time to reinvest. Your arms, shoulders, and sanity will thank you.

And let’s talk about salon chairs for a sec. Sure, they can cost as much as a small car, but

think of it this way: it’s not just a chair—it’s your 1015 hour-a-day throne. An adjustable chair isn’t just a gift for your clients; it’s a gift for you. You deserve to work comfortably while slaying hair like the boss you are!

3. STRETCH

Take short breaks between clients to stretch your neck, shoulders, back, and those hard-working wrists. And no, I’m not suggesting you roll out a yoga mat in the middle of the salon and start channeling your inner downward dog—though, let’s be honest, if you could pull that off during work hours, you’d instantly become a legend.

What I’m saying is, when you’re mixing a colour or waiting for a client to process, pop out the back for a hot second. Drop your tools (gently, of course—those things are expensive!) and take 60 glorious seconds to stretch your arms behind your neck, roll your shoulders, or even throw in a little hip wiggle for fun.

Bonus points if anyone catches you mid-stretch, just tell them it’s part of your artistic process.

4.

SHOES

Oh, how I wish I could strut into work rocking 3-inch stilettos - not just because I’m 5ft nothing and could use the boost, but also because they’re basically a free calf workout. Back in my 20s, 30s, and maybe even once or twice in my 40s, I could sprint across a parking lot in black patent heels like I was auditioning for The Devil Wears Prada.

I know you’ve been there too, right?

But fast forward to now, and let me tell you: the bunions, the squished toes, the swollen ankles - it’s a whole new horror show. By the end of the day, it feels like my feet are staging a protest and demanding hazard pay. Honestly, it makes me want to hit the reset button, start life over, and make better shoe choices with my adult brain.

Here’s the truth: well-cushioned shoes with solid arch support are your best friend. They may not scream sexy, but neither do feet wrapped in ice packs at the end of the day. The alternative? Suck it up and embrace the pain, but don’t come crying to me when your feet start plotting against you.

5. FOOD

WHAT?! You’re thinking, “Who’s got time for that? I live off coffee and can hold a pee for at least 5 hours!” I hear you. Hairdressing life is no joke - you’re juggling back-to-back clients, running on caffeine, and somehow channeling superhuman bladder control. But listen up: no matter how time-poor or overbooked you are, staying fueled and hydrated is non-negotiable.

This isn’t just some fluffy wellness advice; this is serious business. If you’re skipping meals, ignoring snacks, and running on fumes, you’ll eventually crash—hard, then what’s the first thing you’ll reach for?

That’s right: the sugary stuff, cue the rollercoaster of sugar highs and inevitable lows that leave you dragging by mid-afternoon.

Instead, be proactive. Pack yourself some easy, healthy snacks. We’re talking carrots and dip (crunchy and satisfying), a handful of nuts (hello, protein), or some fresh fruit (nature’s candy). Pair that with plenty of water—yes, water—even if you fancy it up with a splash of flavouring or a slice of lemon to make it more palatable.

The bottom line? Your body can’t run on coffee fumes forever. When you’re properly fueled and hydrated, you’ll be able to slay those hair transformations like the pro you are without feeling like a zombie by 3 p.m.

6. REST

The #1 tip and my final piece of wisdom: GET REST whenever you can.

Your body and brain aren’t machines, and even if they were, every machine needs a shutdown.

On your days off, resist the urge to pack your schedule with errands, social events, or “catching up” on work. Instead, try some guilt-free rest and recovery. That doesn’t mean you have to spend the entire day in bed binge-watching Netflix (though, hey, no judgment if you do!).

It can be as simple as taking a long bath, reading a book, going for a walk, or catching up on actual sleep. Yes, sleep - that thing you used to get 8 hours of before life got so busy.

In the evenings, put your phone down (TikTok can wait), wind down with something relaxing, and aim for a consistent bedtime. Your future self will thank you when you wake up feeling refreshed, energised, and ready to tackle the next busy day in the salon without yawning into your coffee.

Because here’s the truth: if you don’t take time to recharge, burnout will creep in and no amount of caffeine, motivational podcasts, or pep talks will fix it.

Rest isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity. So, do yourself a favour and treat your body like the VIP it is. After all, you’ve got a lifetime of slaying hair to get through!
