Incidence/Prevalence: 

> 95% adults worldwide are infected with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)(3) o half the population in industrialized countries and higher socioeconomic groups have primary EBV infection at age 1-5 years o another large proportion of population has primary EBV infection at age 1020 years 25%-30% of patients < 30 years old with primary EBV infection will become sick with infectious mononucleosis(1) overall incidence of infectious mononucleosis in United States about 500 cases per 100,000 persons/year, with highest incidence at age 15-24 years(3) no seasonal distribution of incidence(3)
