General Information Description:
contagious viral infection primarily caused by herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) resulting in rash of skin and mucous membranes (usually lips)(1) often characterized by prodrome of tingling, itching and burning, followed by oral and perioral lesions(1, 3) self-limiting illness in immunocompetent persons (usually heals spontaneously within 1-2 weeks), but associated with lifelong latency(1, 3) contagious to persons not previously infected by virus and immunosuppressed patients(1)
