The love of wordplay, a flair for sound, the spotlight on the offside and beyond, the strange, the comical and the unusual, as well as artistically outstanding and innovative illustrations – these qualities are all intrinsic to children‘s and youth literature from Austria.
As an association of 11 Austrian publishers, we are now presenting our joint foreign rights catalogue for the first time. Each publisher
is featured with three recent or representative titles. So, what unites us?
Most of us are small, independent publishers who create books of high literary, aesthetic and creative quality. It follows that our books and artists are always highly recognised and awarded at home and abroad.

Ganze Teppiche aus Plastiktüten, Plastikgabeln, Plastikflaschen, Plastikschuhen, Plastikzahnbürsten, Plastikschwimmflügeln und was es sonst so alles aus Plastik gibt, haben sich auf dem Wasser zu riesigen Inseln geformt. Es wird gesagt, dass so viel Plastik im Meer schwimmt, dass du es sogar vom Weltraum aus sehen könntest. Das Plastik schmeckt aber nicht nur ekelig,esverstopftunsereMägenundwir können daran sterben. Mit ihren bunten Tupfern sehen Paletten-Feilenfische nicht nur aus verspeisen, riechen sie auch wie sie. So können die großen Raubfische die Feilenfische am Tag nicht sehen und Geisterpfeifenfische treiben kopfDurch all die kleinen Dörnchen am Körper sehen sie dabei auch ein wenig wie Korallen aus und gar nicht richtig wie Fische. Wie du vielleicht bemerkt hast, sind wir Meerestiere ziemlich raffiniert, wenn es darum geht, zu fressen und nicht gefressen zu werden.. Das ist auch der Grund, warum ich mich als eine Gorgonienkoralle tarne. Die meisten Tiere sehen mich nämlich überhaupt nicht zwischen den Korallenarmen, und ich kann ungestört auf meiner Koralle sonnenbaden und Flohkrebssaft schlürfen. Aber nicht nur ich, auch andere Riffbewohner können sich super verstecken, indem sie so aussehen oder so tun, als wären sie andere Tiere, Pflanzen oder Steine. Viele Tiere tarnen sich, um nicht gefressen zu werden. Andere – und die sind gemeingefährlich – tarnen sich, um hinterlistig nach ihrer Beute schnappen zu können. Fische können ihre Augen nicht einfach Damit andere Tiere die Augen nicht sofort erkennen können, sind sie oft in einem dunklen Streifen oder zwischen Tupfern versteckt. Manche Fische haben auch ein großes Scheinauge auf die anderen Tiere, dass die Fische viel größer sind als in Wirklichkeit. Damit sie im Dunkeln ebenfalls gut getarnt sind, ändern Falterfische sind sehr träge Tiere. Sie sehen nicht nur aus wie Steine, sondern liegen auch tagelang an einer Stelle – ohne nur einmal mit der Flosse zu zucken. Mit ihren scharfen, giftigen Rückflossenstacheln schützen sie sich unbemerkt vorbeikommende Tiere verschlingen.

Sie würgen die unverdaulichen Bestandteile ihrer Beutetiere, wie zum Beispiel Mäusefell, einfach wieder raus. sieht aus wie eine graubraune Fellwurst und wenn du so eine findest, kannst du ziemlich sicher sein, dass eine Eule in der Nähe wohnt. Manche Tiere verwenden ihren Kot praktischerweise, zu markieren. Dadurch ist er leicht zu finden. Marder zum Beispiel machen gerne mitten auf den Weg oder benutzen einen gut sichtbaren Baumstumpf, damit alle sehen können: Ich wohne hier, das ist mein Revier. Und das wiederholen sie alle paar Tage, damit die Markierung immer schön frisch bleibt! Auch neue Dinge werden gerne markiert, etwa ein Auto, Jetzt wird’s eklig: Häufchen und Gewölle!

Und Natty ist die Erste, die es ausspricht und verzweifelt ruft: „Seht doch! Die brechen aus!“ Und tatsächlich. Immer mehr Hühner drängeln sich mit lautem Gegacker ins Freie und laufen in alle Richtungen davon. „Ich darf mich nie hinlegen“, sagt Zappel.
„Und Feuer spucken darf ich auch nicht.“
So lange sitzen und nur zuhören, das ist schwierig!“
„Das verstehe ich“, sagt die Drachenmama.

Sie strickt für Zappel einen langen Schal in Blau und Grün.
„Wieso strickst du?“, fragt Zappel. „Ich hab‘ doch schon einen Schal.“
Die Drachenmama sieht auf. „Ich muss mich beruhigen“, sagt sie. „Deine Lehrerin hat angerufen.“
Zappel taucht seinen Löffel in die Buchstabensuppe. „Wieso hat meine Lehrerin angerufen?“

„Sonst?“, fragt Zappel.
„Sonst ruft sie mich wieder an“, sagt die Drachenmama. „Und ich muss ihr sagen, warum du nicht zuhörst.
Du solltest ihr das aber selber sagen.
Sie ist deine Lehrerin, nicht meine.“
„Na gut“, sagt Zappel.
Gerade hat er in der Suppe ein P entdeckt.
Davon hat er sogar zwei in seinem Namen!
Jetzt muss er das P nur noch herausfischen.
Zappel schnappt nach dem Löffel.
Platsch!
Jetzt hat er den Löffel fallen gelassen und alles ist voll Suppenspritzer.

Er musste dringend mit einem Fuchs reden.
