Research shows that art-sparked communities thrive. In Lexington alone, a $32 million arts and cultural industry supports 1,185 full-time jobs and kicks $3.2 million in taxes into city and state coffers. Artists are now hailed as dynamic city builders because their work goes a long way towards shaping a city’s image, making it a magnet for tourists and stimulating the emergence of vibrant arts spaces and places, abuzz with creative energy.
What’s more, by contributing to the livability of cities, the arts help to attract business and investors. Studies show that residents who select a community for reasons linked to quality of life are more likely to be actively engaged and attached to the community over time. Good for them, good for everyone.
73% of Americans across all demographic and economic categories agree that the arts help us “understand other cultures better.” Art helps us open our eyes and appreciate the vibrancy of the American melting pot. Through their art, artists have the singular ability to breach the barriers of language and culture and encourage the understanding and empathy essential to peace and stability. To experience a work of art is to walk, for maybe just a moment, in someone else’s shoes. To both glimpse and emotionally inhabit the world through another perspective. By simply being, art shows us that there are always other ways to see, experience and interpret the world.
LexArts supports artists and arts organizations to help art come to life for all to experience .
It’s no surprise that in times of trouble, people turn to art. Perhaps the mere existence of a painting or a sculpture or a piece of music is a reassuring reminder of the endurance of the human spirit, an expression of the best we can be, the highest we can fly.
The healing potential of art is widely embraced as a significant tool in health and recovery. Local medical and healing facilities have filled rooms and hallways with local art, and the testimonials of patients and loved ones proves the power of art. On the campus of CHI Saint Joseph Cancer Center East stands Amazing April, a lovingly crowd-funded Horse Mania entry commemorating a Lexington woman’s brave battle with cancer, an inspiration to all who see it. Three Horse Mania Horses of Hope, beacons of resilience and fortitude, now reside in tornado-ravaged Western Kentucky.
Astute leaders looking to enhance the vibrancy and desirability of cities understand the vital role the arts play in this effort. For the past 50 years, LexArts has actively connected the community with the arts, in all manner of meaningful ways, formal and informal, large scale and small.
2022 saw the second encore of our celebrated public art project, Horse Mania, presented by Keeneland and Maker’s Mark . Our bi-monthly LexArts HOP , presented by VisitLEX continues to draw throngs of seasoned and neophyte art fanciers, as do sparkling exhibitions at our LexArts Gallery Series , presented by Independence Bank . Lexington residents and visitors can now spot, track and participate in all things artsy, all around town, thanks to the LexArts app, powered by PNC Bank . The annual LexArts Teacher’s Guide , presented by Stock Yards Bank , chock full of the annual events and activities of our funded organizations, is a handy resource guide for educators planning arts activities.
And our ongoing collaboration with Keeneland and Maker’s Mark – three annual signature bottle issues with artist-created labels – forges a link between the arts and two legendary Bluegrass icons.
