October is the month when we raise awareness about breast cancer. The Liberty Military Housing team has shown their support by wearing pink on Wednesdays Veterans, active-duty service members, and their families must know about this potentially fatal disease. According to studies, 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer. However, the rate is significantly higher among women who have served in the military, with breast cancer rates estimated to be up to 40% higher in female veterans and service members compared to the general population. Additionally, the incidence of breast cancer among active-duty women is seven times higher than the average rate for fifteen other types of cancer
While pink dominates awareness campaigns, it's important to note that breast cancer can also affect men. According to the American Cancer Society, by 2023, approximately 2,800 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in men, and about 530 men will die from it. Male mortality rates are 25% higher than female rates due to the misconception that breast cancer is solely a 'woman's disease.' This leads many men to ignore early symptoms, resulting in later-stage diagnoses and potentially poorer outcomes Learn more about breast cancer in men and the importance of early detection at www.hisbreastcancer.org

October is National Energy Action month and we need your help to reduce energy consumption on Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) JBLM’s annual energy cost is over $21 million or approximately $55,000 a day Small changes made in your home can make a big difference in reducing energy consumption
One simple change is swapping out incandescent lightbulbs for compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) or light emitting diodes (LEDs). CFLs and LEDS consume only a fraction of the energy that incandescent bulbs do. In fact, CFL bulbs can consume up to 80% less electricity than a standard light bulb. If possible, opt for natural light throughout the day to reduce turning on lights.
Another way to reduce energy consumption is to reduce “phantom load.” Electronics that are not in use, but plugged in still draw power from the outlet. Consider using a power strip that’s easy to turn on and off, unplug your coffee maker, toaster, cell phone chargers, fans, computer monitor, and other appliances when not in use.
Installing a programmable thermostat is also helpful in the fight against wasted energy A programmable thermostat makes it easy to adjust the temperature throughout the day when less energy is needed or you are not home Sealing air leaks around doors, window, and air ducts will also help keep the warm or cool air inside Also, remember JBLM thermostat set points are 68 degrees in the winter and 78 degrees in the summer This helps ensure energy resilience and mission readiness
Washing only full loads of dishes and laundry with cold water will also save money and protect the environment. Heating water in your washer consumes a significant amount of energy. The washer will also use about the same amount of energy (and water) no matter the size of the load. Furthermore, consider air-drying some of your clothes to reduce how much you are using the dryer.
If you are in the market for a new appliance, purchase appliances with the Energy Star logo. These appliances are approved by the US Environmental Protection Agency or the US Department of Energy to use less energy. Energy Star appliances like water heaters, fridges, and more can make a huge dent in your energy bill
A unique way to save energy is to plant more trees and shrubbery Trees can help shade your home from sunlight, keeping it cooler throughout the day
Every action taken to conserve energy contributes to strengthening the security and resilience of our infrastructure and helps the fight against climate change. Follow the Sustainable JBLM Facebook page to get updates about energy month and participate in energy trivia for a chance to win a Sustainable JBLM swag bag!
