A WORD FROM OUR WEST ARMY PARTNERS Protecting Our Waterways
By: Kiley Westergaard, DPW Environmental Division, AGEISS
Living in Washington state, where water is abundant, comes with a shared responsibility. The water that we use for drinking and recreation and that supports fish, and wildlife is easily impacted by our actions. When it rains, water flows across surfaces and eventually makes its way into creeks, lakes, streams, and the Puget Sound. Unfortunately, pollutants like cigarette butts, pet waste, chemical fertilizers, and motor oil can mix with rainfall runoff, harming our waterways. On JBLM, we design facilities that capture runoff, allowing plants, soil mixtures, and other materials to help filter out these pollutants before they reach our waterways Still, each of us can take simple steps to keep our water clean and protect the Puget Sound
Pick up that poop! Clean up after your pets. Scoop it, bag it, and trash it every time. Keep dumpster lids closed when not in use. Open dumpsters can collect rainfall, and when serviced, the water mixed with trash may inadvertently spill onto the street Simply closing the lids is an effective way to prevent this issue
Use a commercial car wash Washing your car in your driveway or on the street is prohibited on JBLM Doing this can send dirty water, containing pollutants like soap, oil, and antifreeze, down the street and into the storm drain, ultimately reaching local waterways On the other hand, commercial car washes treat wash water before it enters the environment, and they use less water, making them an eco-friendlier option
Do not drip and drive! Vehicle leaks are not only bad for your car but also a major source of stormwater pollution. Any car maintenance can be done at the MWR Auto Skills Center on Lewis Main or McChord Field Visit
https://jblmarmymwrcom/programs/auto-skills for information on the Lewis Main Auto Skills Center and
https://jblmarmymwrcom/programs/mcchordauto-center for information on the McChord Field Auto Skills Center
Ensure only rain goes down the storm drain! Never pour household hazardous wastes down the drain, onto the ground, or in the trash. JBLM residents can safely dispose of paint, household cleaners, oil, antifreeze, propane, batteries, and more at the Environmental Operations Building, 9679 Rainier Ave.; please call 253-967-4786 for hours, directions, and instructions.
We need your help reporting stormwater findings! Report to usarmy.jblm.id-readiness.list.dpwstormwater@army.mil Reportable findings include car washing or maintenance in driveways or streets, street flooding, or anything other than rain down the storm drain

Congress Mandated 100% Privatized Housing Inspections
By: DPW Housing Division
JBLM 100% Privatized Housing inspections are scheduled 21 Apr 2025 – 23 May 2025
Congress mandated that 100% of all Privatized Family Housing on Army installations will be inspected by an independent, third-party contractor, RER/JLL, retained by the Department of the Army to ensure the Army’s housing assets are safe and habitable This mandate is fully laid out in Public Law No. 116-92, the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2020, SEC. 3051
The inspectors will collect data on Life/Health/Safety (LHS) deficiencies and the condition of a range of components spanning all building systems and reporting all findings and analysis to the Army.
The inspector will be clearly identified as an Army Housing Inspection Team member and will wear shoe covers for the inspection This inspection will require an adult in your household, over the age of 18, to be home and allow full access to the house during the scheduled inspection time period. Inspections are mandatory and will take approximately 1 hour.
On 21 March, residents will receive an email from RER/JLL with a web-based self-scheduling tool that will allow residents to select a date/time for the inspection; appointments need to be made NLT 20 April.
For residents that do not schedule or miss appointment; a memo signed by Garrison Commander will be issued giving resident 24-hour notice that RER/JLL and military escort will enter home to conduct inspection.
Housing Residents are reminded that the Joint-Base Emergency Communication Center (JBECC) is the central point for all requests for fire, medical or law enforcement assistance/response or to report any suspicious incidents or illegal activity 24 hours a day. If assistance is needed, please call the following:
