COMMUNITY REMINDERS

With the goal of highlighting the sacrifices and resilience of military children, former Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger, established April as “Month of the Military Child” in 1986 The strength, adaptability, resourcefulness and perseverance of the military child is inspiring. Each year the DOD, national, state, and local government agencies along with schools, military affiliated companies and private companies join together in CELEBRATING our military children, and the importance of the role they play in freedom

From all of us at Liberty Military Housing, we celebrate and say thank you to all our military kids who live in our housing!

A visible way to show support to military youth is to wear purple Purple represents that all branches of the military are supported; Air Force blue, Army green, Navy blue, Marine red, and Coast Guard blue, all collaborate to combine together as a single color, purple “Purple Up!” For Military Kids!

Military Children by the Numbers

· There are currently 16 million children of active and reserve duty members worldwide These children face many challenges and unique experiences as a result of their parents’ service.

A typical military child can move six to nine times from kindergarten through high school graduation Military families move on average every two to three years, impacting them through changing school and support networks

A WORD FROM OUR WEST ARMY PARTNERS

Earth Month: Where to Recreate on JBLM

With the weather beginning to warm up, it’s time to get outside and enjoy all the beautiful places Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) has to offer Go for a hike, walk, bird watch, play at the park, or take your pups out for an adventure While out in nature, make sure to leave nothing behind and take nothing Earth Day is on April 22nd and it’s a great day to get outside, recreate, restore, or maintain your favorite green space.

McKay Marsh, Madigan FIT trail, and the Porter Hills Trails are all beautiful trails to explore within JBLM. McKay Marsh is located across the street from the Lewis Army Museum on Lewis North. The trail is a lush green trail surrounding the marsh and is about 1.5 miles. Madigan FIT trail is located between Madigan hospital and Old Madigan Housing. It is a padded trail following Murray Creek that has optional agility stops for a more intense workout along the way. The Porter Hills Trails are located near Carter Lake Elementary School on McChord. The trails have three options: yellow, green, or orange and range from 1.3 to 1.75 miles. If going for hikes and walks isn’t your speed, JBLM offers other options that are easy to access with a stunning view.

Visit Russel Landing or Shoreline Park at American Lake for a relaxing day at the park These spots have picnic tables and a playground with a beautiful view of the lake Russell Landing also has a boat launch, a sand volleyball court, and freshwater lake fishing Fishing licenses are available at the Northwest Adventure center Another option is to enjoy the gazebo at Morey Pond on McChord and use the bird blind to watch birds and other wildlife

Get outside for some fresh air and take the pups to one of the several dog parks located on Lewis Main and McChord The Lewis dog parks have two fenced in areas with agility training equipment The McChord dog park has a large open area for dogs to run and enjoy With all these amazing options, there’s something for everyone at JBLM

While out recreating, if you bring anything in, make sure it leaves with you. Also, to go above and beyond, pick up any trash or non-nature items that have been left behind. Participating in restoration events is also a great way to get outside and do something good for the environment. If you need an idea, JBLM Environmental offers a restoration event on Earth Day at the Prairie Oak Preserve. Come out and enjoy the nice weather, while also making a positive impact Email usarmyjblmidreadinesslistdpw-edpr1@armymil for more information or to register for the event

Whether its enjoying, recreating, or restoring, take advantage of the nicer weather and spend time outdoors!
