Dear Friends and Supporters I have recently had the great pleasure of finally meeting up with Amanda Waring (after years of emailing and telephone calls) at an excellent local conference looking at “End of Life – Best Practice”. Amanda is the daughter of the late beautiful actress, Dame Dorothy Tutin (who coincidentally went to RADA Royal Academy of Dramatic Art with my parents ). Whilst her mother was waiting to be treated in hospital Amanda sadly witnessed , “the devastating effect that the lack of compassionate and dignified care had on her mind, body and spirit” (Waring 2012). Following this personal pain and distress, Amanda has become an advocate for compassionate care for all.

More recently the catalogue of errors at Mid Staffordshire Hospital, the resulting Francis Report and indeed the Neuberger review into the Liverpool Care Pathway in July remind us of how critical values and culture are to all organisations. How deeply sad that a Liverpool hospice model of care that was developed to help maintain dignity and lessen discomfort for patients during the last days and hours of life (which was adopted in other care settings such as nursing homes and hospitals) has led to suffering for some and continuing distress for the families left behind that will not be assuaged.

What is clear, I would suggest, is that the essence of care is as simple as the real connection and communication between people. We all want to be looked after with respect for our needs, with honour for who we are, and with all staff having the time to care. But above all, as Mother Teresa said,

Within my recent email exchange with Robert Francis QC (The Francis Report into Mid Staffordshire Foundation Trust) he confirmed to me that “I have always had the most profound respect for the hospice movement and indeed made it my business to use good practice as a model from which to develop some of my observations and recommendations”.

This commendation for hospice care is gratefully received by us all, but no one can be complacent. A key part of my role here is to uphold the culture of the hospice movement and Lewis-Manning and as we grow and develop the provision of care, we also adopt and integrate our values into everything we do.

News New recruits!

New board member We are delighted to announce that local radio presenter Steve Harris from BBC Radio Solent, has been appointed as a Board Member.

34 year old Steve has been working in broadcasting for the last 12 years, presenting radio shows in London, Birmingham, Brighton, Bristol and Teesside before taking BBC Solent’s Steve signs up over BBC Radio Solent’s Drivetime programme, which he has been presenting for the last five years. It was through this show that he came to work with Lewis-Manning Hospice.

A big Lewis-Manning welcome to our four new recruits.

Paul Tucker, who previously spent four years as Communications Officer at Lighthouse, Poole’s Centre for the Arts, joins as the new Marketing and Communications Officer, while Vikkie Richmond, who was formerly a Health Care Associate at PruHealth in Bournemouth, arrives as Fundraising Administrator.

Steve said, “I’d interviewed Elizabeth (CEO) on a number of occasions and I was bowled-over by the passion and empathy she had for her role. When she invited me to come and have a look at the newly-renovated hospice, I jumped at the chance, and I was so impressed by what I saw. I’m delighted to be asked to join the Board, and I hope this is the start of a long and fruitful relationship.” Elizabeth, commented, “We are really delighted that Steve accepted the invitation from our chairman join the Board. His energy and enthusiasm for the work of the hospice will be of such benefit to us all – welcome Steve”.

There are also two new appointments in clinical care with Bethan Roberts, who previously worked at the Marie Curie Hospice in Hampstead, as well as the Royal Free and Charing Cross hospitals, joining as a Senior Physiotherapist, while new Staff Nurse, Di Brown, arrives after 11 years service at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital, where she worked as both a Bank Staff and Night Site manager.

I hope you will join us in welcoming them to the team!

Celebrity makes good impression

’Dr Simon Pennell is one of 80 portraits that feature in ‘Alive: In The Face of Death’, an exhibition at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool by world famous photographer Rankin.

We were delighted that local TV celebrity Debra Stephenson, star of Bad Girls, Coronation Street and The Impressions Show, was able to take time out from her busy schedule to come and open our recent Village Show and Craft Fayre By The Sea with the Mayor and Mayoress of Poole.

In a huge departure from his well-known celebrity portraits of subjects including Queen Elizabeth II, Kate Moss, Madonna and David Bowie, Rankin’s new exhibition focuses on the taboo of death, looking at people with illness or those involved in the business of dying.

Debra, who has just announced that she will Debra cuddles Lewis Bear at fayre be returning to panto at Lighthouse in Poole later this year, is a big supporter of Lewis-Manning, having already been involved in many of our fundraising events including the Starlight Stroll and James Bond ‘Skyfall’ charity night.

Debra also opened the Ashley Cross shop when she starred in Lighthouse’s panto Peter Pan in 2010.

Simon contacted the photographer as soon as he heard about the exhibition, which was inspired by the death of both of Rankin’s parents in 2005, and was then invited to get involved and have his portrait taken.

Hospice Life Meet the physiotherapist

speciality, but also what drew me particularly to Lewis-Manning are the future planned developments - the in-patient unit and rehabilitation services alongside survivorship initiatives (the view isn’t bad either!!).

Explain your day-to-day work at the hospice At present a major part of my caseload are those patients who attend the Day Hospice services. Any patient using these services can access physiotherapy no matter how big or small their concern is, be it reduced mobility, weakness, fatigue, pain, or purely just wanting to become a little bit fitter. Treatment takes place either in Day Hospice itself or in the gym, a beautiful space dedicated to physiotherapy. It can take the form of education, advice, a personalised exercise programme, hands on treatment or small group exercise classes.

The other side of my caseload is patients whose sole need is physiotherapy. This tends to be for issues with a specific body area, for example the shoulder or neck, as a result of treatments like surgery or radiotherapy. Here I can help with improving range of movement, pain and mobility through exercise and hands on treatment.

Bethan Roberts, who joined Lewis-Manning a few months ago, gives an insight into her role as a Senior Physiotherapist at the hospice.

Bethan, tell us about your background?

I always wanted to be a physiotherapist from the age of 14 when I first attended a careers evening. It was a career that seemed to fit all my interests and would allow me to help people improve their lives. I was warned that it was a difficult career to get into but I worked hard and was very lucky to get a place in my university of choice on my first attempt at applying. I trained at the University of Wales College of Medicine (UWCM) in Cardiff which was a great city for student life! I qualified in 2003 and stayed on in Cardiff to complete my junior rotations. During this time I completed a rotation in the palliative care unit and this ignited my interest in working in this field on a longer term basis.

I then made a big decision to move to the Big Smoke and spent five years living in London specialising in cancer and palliative care spending time in two big teaching hospitals and a large Marie Curie hospice.

How do you find the role so far?

What interested you in coming to work at Lewis-Manning?

Working at Lewis-Manning has been a breath of fresh air! The whole team here have been so friendly and enthusiastic. I feel like I am really using my skills to help people affected by life limiting diseases in a positive way and look forward to what the future will bring. A priority for me is to see the gym equipped to allow us to offer a wider range of activities for those fully who use it.

Having spent most of my childhood and teenage years growing up in The Purbecks it was always my plan to move back to Dorset.

When the opportunity arose for this to happen there were not any jobs available in this speciality at the time, so I took on a job at Royal Bournemouth Hospital. I spent a few years working in various different areas, which has definitely helped to extend my knowledge and skills in all areas of physiotherapy. This has been particularly beneficial now that palliative care has become more inclusive to conditions other than cancer, and in fact, I still work there when I’m not here at Lewis-Manning.

Nurses success

Sally Paton has been coming to the Lewis-Manning Carers’ Group for a few months and talks about how it has helped her both practically and emotionally.

Congratulations to Sally Church, Di Brown, Michelle Carbis and Eileen Mordew from our nursing team, who have all been awarded the ‘End Of Life Care (Distant Learning)’ Level 3 certificate, after successfully completing the three month course.

The course is designed for any health or social care worker who wishes to improve their knowledge and understanding of end of life care, relevant to all types of care settings including hospices.

Sally explains, “The group meets once a week at the hospice and discuss things that each person needs to know at that time, which could be how to fill in forms or choosing the right funeral company and making funeral arrangements. The group also chat about their experiences and pass on advice and information. We have also learnt lots of practical and useful things.

I feel supported and know that there are kind people to help us should we need them. It is perhaps not always necessary to come each Thursday session but it is wonderful to be able to ring and come along when you need advice, or just to be with everyone.

I really look forward to it and we have lots of laughs, not to mention tea and biscuits, and all the staff are wonderful – they understand.”

The view from Lewis-Manning today is…

For those of you who already ‘Like’ the Lewis-Manning Hospice Facebook page, you will now be familiar with the ‘view’ pictures that we have been posting daily in the morning over the past few months.

As many of you already know, the view from Lewis-Manning across the beautiful harbour towards the Purbecks is quite simply breathtaking and no doubt one of the finest in the area. Our location, and in particular the view, is an intrinsic part of what makes the hospice so unique.

The response so far on Facebook has been fantastic. These single words can often say so much to someone, especially as we can all find a different personal meaning in them. However, we believe that what they do say to everybody, particularly when used in tandem with a stunning photo, is that Lewis-Manning is there to share with our community.

This view has recently inspired the thinking behind the idea to post a different daily picture from the hospice, although not exclusively of the harbour, using the caption ‘The view from Lewis-Manning today is.....’

So, if you are already on Facebook please go and ‘Like’ our page and try and encourage your friends and family to do the same, so you too can become part of the Lewis-Manning community. Social networking sites, such as Facebook, have now become a vital tool for communicating with our supporters, especially as it is free and used by so many people!

Each day we post a new ‘view’ with a simple but inspirational, thought-provoking or celebratory word that reflects the mood of the photo. However, these words also have an overarching significance, revealing a little bit more about who we are and what we do, as well as capturing the extraordinary experience and atmosphere of the hospice. Put simply, it is to try and convey the essence of that completely unique ‘feeling’ you have at LewisManning.

Not only can you enjoy the daily view but it also enables you to have a daily insight and up-to-date information into the many activities that go on at the hospice, including events and news stories.

Some of the words we have recently used include enlightening, welcoming, therapeutic, optimistic, active, tranquil, reassuring, rejuvenating and precious - positive words that echo the holistic approach of the hospice.

If you’re not already on Facebook, why not take this opportunity to give it a go or ask someone to help – it’s really very easy to set up.

Past Events Village Show and Craft Fayre By The Sea Local TV celebrity Debra Stephenson joined the Mayor and Mayoress of Poole in opening the Village Show in July, which raised £2,500.

With demonstrations and performances, craft, book and food stalls, plus a Dog Show and competitions judged by BBC Radio Solent’s Steve Harris, the event held in the hospice grounds provided plenty of fun for all the family.

Dorset Coast and Harbour Bike Ride

Leap for Lewis-Manning Skydive Six local people braved the skies in July and jumped from ten thousand feet over Salisbury Airfield in tandem skydives raising over £6,000.

Over 300 cycling enthusiasts took part in this event on a beautiful sunny June day, riding a choice of four routes of 17, 33, 42 or 54 miles through the beautiful Dorset countryside and along the famous Jurassic Coast. The event has so far raised nearly £2000 with money still coming in.

A big thank you to the brave jumpers – Daisy Lapworth, Diana Richardson, Stephen Sibley and the Lester Aldridge Team of Benn Cobb, Michelle Day and Damien Frewer – for achieving such brilliant sponsorship.

Summer Solstice Starlight Stroll

Sunflower Party

35 participants took part in the special ‘21’ themed stroll, which took place on Friday 21st June at 2100 hours to celebrate the hospice’s 21st Birthday, with participants able to watch the beautiful sunset over the harbour at 21.21pm. Taking a 7km circular route from Whitecliff Park, along Baiter and Poole Quay, returning through Poole Park, the group raised £1,700.

To mark Hospice Awareness Month and Lewis-Manning’s 21st Birthday, the annual Sunflower Party was held in June at The Cumberland Hotel in Bournemouth raising £13,500.

A huge thanks to the committee and John Beukes of Care Dynamics for kindly sponsoring the event which saw over 130 guests treated to a three course meal, followed by a night of live music from the Swing Unlimited Big Band and an exclusive silent auction.

Thanks to Asda in Poole for supplying the half way refreshments and the Pirates of Poole for helping to marshall the event.

Fundraising Thanks Rotary Club donation

Five local Rotary clubs from Ferndown, Parley, Swanage and Purbeck, Wareham and Wimborne have combined to provide a fantastic donation of £10,000 to furnish and equip one of the new bedrooms in the hospice.

Speaking of the donation Elizabeth said: “The cheque is a fantastic boost for the hospice and for the growing number of patients that rely on us for the help we provide at a particularly distressing time.”

Anne Banks, past president of Ferndown, the lead club, said: “Rotary clubs can only do so much on their own, and so much more when they combine their resources. Furnishing and equipping a room at Lewis-Manning Hospice is a case in point and we are absolutely delighted that we could come together for such a worthwhile cause.”

Rejeuvenate Bournemouth-based Rejuvenate IT recently proved why they dub themselves as “the friendliest computer company in the whole wide world”, when it donated several computer monitors to the hospice.

The IT Support and Digital Agency offer business IT support, network maintenance and IT Helpdesk services across Dorset. Company Director, Chris Howard, said, “Lewis-Manning is an incredible local charity and as Bournemouth’s friendliest IT Company we were delighted to help and relieved that we were able to pass on equipment that otherwise would not have been put to best use.”

Community Support National Citizen Service

A special thank you to Tarquin at TP Decorators, as well as the team of volunteers from The Mortgage Works, (part of the Nationwide) on Richmond Hill in Bournemouth, for helping paint the outside of the Ferndown shop.

This year the National Citizen Service (NCS) programme, the government’s largest youth initiative aimed at those who are currently or soon to be 16-17 years old, was officially rolled out across Poole and Bournemouth.

The scheme aims to help young people with the transition to adulthood and promote a more cohesive, responsible and engaged society by bringing young people from a range of different backgrounds together to make a difference in their communities. In May we approached the scheme with a proposal for one of the groups to work with Lewis-Manning on a Community Action Project. We were absolutely thrilled when one of the groups unanimously voted to partner us and you can read all about it on page 11.

Taking stock of current climate Many of you may have seen recently in newspapers and on television that charities are experiencing a sudden downturn in donations. Oxfam, for example, has announced that it is already 50% down this year and our ten shops in the area are unfortunately no exception in the current climate.

NSC started in 2011 and now offers over 50,000 places to young people across the UK. The programme is divided into four consecutive weekly sections, beginning with a range of outdoor pursuits and team building exercises, followed by project work and skill building. The last two weeks see the group work with a local community group or business to then plan, present and deliver a specific assignment.

We therefore urgently need stock so that we can keep raising vital funds for the hospice. In particular the shops require good quality ladies, men’s and children’s clothing, as well as items of furniture such as sofas, tables and chairs and chests of drawers.

The programme is incredibly beneficial to all participants, giving young adults the chance to learn new skills and build confidence that can help with job or university applications, while organisations have a unique opportunity to build new relationships with the youth in the community and educate them about the work that they do.

We are increasing the number of Bag Drops we do using our Lewis-Manning Hospice collection bags and each shop is appealing directly to its customers for stock. So far we are keeping our heads just above water.

Reports show that over the last 20 years there has been a worrying decline in younger people engaging or participating with charities, particularly amongst the 16–24 age group. Yet it is these people that we are actually more likely to benefit from, whether it is giving, volunteering, fundraising or just sharing hospice awareness and information with their friends.

Interestingly we have seen a huge increase in our Facebook page over the past few weeks, significantly helped by a number of our younger supporters sharing and promoting Lewis-Manning.

34% of our Facebook page ‘Likes’ come from people aged 18 – 34, while females make up a massive 61% of our total support.

National Volunteers’ Week

Volunteers enjoy tea party

We celebrated National Volunteers’ Week in June by holding an Open Morning for anyone interested in volunteering for the hospice, followed in the afternoon by a tea party to thank all the current volunteers.

It may be a bit of a cliché but young people really are the future and many of them at some point will be affected directly or indirectly by cancer or other life-limiting illnesses, so we must connect with them at the earliest opportunity and harness the passion, enthusiasm and energy that they offer.

There was an excellent response from people willing to give up a bit of their time for a whole host of roles including drivers, fundraisers, shop volunteers, Day Hospice companions, receptionists, hairdressers, gardeners and general office volunteers.

Volunteering is open to all ages, from school leavers to retired people, and is an ideal way to meet new people, gain confidence and new skills out in the community, as well as enjoy being a valued member of a team. It is also a perfect way to help boost university and college applications, improve CV’s, or simply make valuable use of time between jobs or when the children have left home.

Sculpture in the Garden Cliff & Barbara Woods once again opened their lovely garden for a long weekend in July to exhibit a variety of local artists’ sculpture.

Blessed with good weather, visitors were able to browse the garden, discovering all kinds of works in and around the garden from wire chickens grazing to stunning glasswork in the summer house.

Cream teas and ice creams were served and a raffle was run by their fantastic team of helpers. £1,600 was raised through sales and commissions, the teas, the raffle and donations. Barbara said, ‘Thank you all so much for your support. We’ve made pots of money. Hope to have your support again next year’.

StitchnBitchforcharity Stitchnbitchforcharity are a group of ladies who regularly meet at each others houses to make clothing, home furnishings and gifts from donated fabrics for good causes. We were delighted when they announced they were hosting a Vintage Tea in aid of the hospice. It was a huge success and all the ladies looked the part and dressed the hall beautifully. Sue Hands from the group said, “We were delighted to support Lewis-Manning Hospice by donating the £1000 proceeds from our Vintage Tea party held recently in Holdenhurst Village. Everyone enjoyed a traditional tea served on vintage china by 1950’s lovelies!”

Hathersage Hill for the Hospice Dee Nustedt took on the Hathersage Hilly Triathlon on 30th June up in the beautiful Peak District. The event included a 420 metre swim, 21k bike ride and 7k run. Dee was a star, completing the course and raising a fantastic £850 for the hospice. Dee said, ‘After visiting the Lewis-Manning Hospice before completing my triathlon I wanted my feet to sprout wings so I could raise as much sponsorship as possible for the organisation.’

Power in numbers Supporter groups are satellite groups from the main fundraising team at the hospice who meet at regular intervals and organise events and activities in their local area to raise funds and awareness of the hospice. Being a member of a Hospice Support Group can be something really worthwhile and will allow members to develop new skills as well as giving something back to the local community. Jobshop held a party to celebrate their first birthday and donated £74 from the proceeds of a raffle. Leading Edge Networking group donated £245 from a raffle held during their quarterly evening dinner and MY Salon held an open evening and raised £61 from their raffle.

Legacies A son’s story

Tree of Life

In October 2012, Nici Burn died after a long fight with breast cancer. Nici was treated for lymphoedema here at the hospice but when the need became appropriate Nici Burn and Aria our team of specialist trained nurses visited her at her home. Her son Richard explains below why Lewis-Manning Hospice benefited in her memory.

A group of local young people aged 16 – 17 years of age have been working with us recently as part of the NCS (National Citizen Service) programme to create a special ‘Tree of Life’ sculpture for patients, carers, families and staff to enjoy.

The fifteen teenagers designed and built a ‘Tree of Life’ sculpture, which has been erected in the wooded area of the garden. It is to be a lasting sculpture that patients and their families can use to hang or display memories, inspirational, positive messages and bucket lists.

‘It was my mum’s wishes that cards of condolence or flowers weren’t to be sent after her death but rather a charitable donation to two of her favourite charities if people felt like it. There was simply no pressure there but if anyone wanted to contribute they could.

Lewis-Manning Hospice was one of the charities very close to my mum’s heart so I set up a Just Giving page to make donations very simple’. Her page raised £1062.50 for the hospice.

As part of the four week programme (see page 8) they also organised a Lewis-Manning stand at the recent Meyrick Park Family Fun Day, where they raised over £200 to buy materials for the sculpture.

Participants Ruth Jennings, Lauren Gower and Chloe Sparks said, “We started four weeks ago as a group of strangers who became a team, working hard together to give back to the community.

The final week at the hospice was fantastic and we are very proud to have pulled together to build the ‘Tree of Life’, creating something positive.”

But Richard did not stop there! Spurred on by the memory of his mother, Richard decided to put on a charity ball at his local golf club in Wokingham, Surrey, and with the help of his work colleagues raised £2800, which was then matched by his company 3M to the tune of £550.

Elizabeth added, “I am absolutely delighted that the young people in the National Citizen Scheme have chosen to enhance the environment at Lewis-Manning Hospice with their art work. It’s been great to have them here and we have all really enjoyed their energy and enthusiasm.”

We would like to thank Richard, his family and colleagues and 3M and Nici herself for choosing to support Lewis-Manning Hospice for these very special donations.
