“A full night’s sleep, time to get out and socialise – freedom!”

Fundamentally, respite care at Lewis-Manning makes a significant difference to both patients and carers. Time for the patients to have the support of the specialist nurses and the camaraderie of other patients and time for carers to have a rest and recharge their batteries. Can I just take a moment to let you know that carers save the NHS £119 billion – yes billion – every year. What we can do at Lewis-Manning is a drop in the ocean, but it does really help.

This care is free to patients, as are all our services. But the difference with respite is that Lewis-Manning does not receive any financial support from the NHS towards the costs.

(The NHS supports day hospice, the better breathing clinic and the lymphoedema services to approximately 20% of their costs). We are therefore heavily dependent on donations and our own fundraising efforts to support this vital service.

As we look back over the last financial year April 2014 – end of March 2015 – I can only be proud and encouraged by all the developments, and so grateful to each member of the team (wherever they work) for all they do for patients and carers.

However, there is still work to do. Our plans to open the end of life element of care have taken much longer than anyone of us hoped. The reality is that by opening the beds fully we will increase our costs by 100% and we are therefore working very hard to finalise contract arrangements with the NHS and to secure significant “capital cushion” funding which will reduce financial risk as we complete recruitment.

Not only will we increase our costs by offering end of life care in the in patient unit, but more importantly we will increase the number of patients we are able to care for, from 700 patients every year to more than 1,000. We know there are patients who need end of life care now, please continue to support us so that we can achieve this goal.

Retail tax of at least a quarter of the value of the donations then the Government will pay!

We have been wanting to introduce the scheme to our shops for some time but it is difficult to run without computerised tills which we have not been able to introduce….. until now!

The new arrangements have meant some other changes like the introduction of bar coded labels so we can track who donated which item and make sure that we collect the Gift Aid from the government. We are only a few weeks into the scheme and our managers are doing a great job getting used to it and encouraging donors to sign up to Gift Aid. As a result we are seeing an improvement in the shop takings which will be able to go straight towards patient care. The extra 25% makes a big difference, especially on some of the more expensive items, like furniture.

Shop staff celebrate the arrival of Gift Aid

I am delighted to say that our retail team is now able to collect Gift Aid on your donations of goods. This means that for every donation you make which is Gift Aided, Lewis-Manning can collect 25% of the value from the government.

The scheme means that for every £1, the item is now worth £1.25 to Lewis-Manning without the donor or the buyer having to pay any more. As long as the Gift Aid donor is a UK taxpayer and has paid

Staff Away Day Our recent all-staff team meeting at the hospice yet again proved that we are blessed with an exceptional and committed group of people at Lewis-Manning - all focused on providing the highest quality of care for patients, no matter what area of the organisation they work in.

International Women’s Day celebrated at special event

The hospice marked International Women’s Day in March by launching its Celebrating Women 2015 campaign at our sold-out Ladies Afternoon Tea event, which took place at the Harbour Heights Hotel in Sandbanks International Women’s Day takes place annually on March 8th and this year had ‘Make It Happen’ as its theme. The day itself is celebrated with thousands of events held throughout the world to inspire women and celebrate their achievements.

Hotel and includes a three course lunch with coffee and mints, plus arrival drink and half a bottle of wine. Tickets are on sale now at £55 per person or £500 for a table of 10 and early booking is recommended due to the popularity of the event.

The Ladies Afternoon Tea was attended by over 100 local women who enjoyed a traditional afternoon tea of delicious cakes, pastries and sandwiches. Live music was provided by the Alani String Quartet and Gill Donnell MBE, an experienced leader, motivational speaker and executive coach, was Guest Speaker. The event also included an auction, balloon pop and raffle, raising over £4000.

During the Ladies Afternoon Tea details of our third annual Celebrating Women Lunch were unveiled, which is taking place in October as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This year’s event will be on Friday 2nd October at the Sandbanks

Today is my last day in Day Hospice. I feel sad about not coming next week but happy that the door is always open and that staff are always able to take a phone call if I need to speak to them.

Through day hospice and overnight stay attendance I have regained my confidence and now feel ready to move on with my life. I have joined the Tuesday afternoon art and social group where I continue to develop my new art skills alongside Jeanie the creative artist.

Tony started to attend Day Hospice two weeks after his wife died in June 2014 and he had cared for his wife for the previous seven years right up until she passed away. Tony had a diagnosis of cancer of the prostate which has spread to the bones in his spine and talks here about how using the hospice has really benefitted his well-being.

I started to attend Lewis-Manning Day Hospice on a Wednesday 10am-3pm. Before I started I had completely lost my confidence and my ability to socialise as my life had consisted of caring for my wife for so long. Coming to Day Hospice enabled me to regain my confidence and to learn again how to form relationships with people. I also learnt new skills like how to make silk scarves and how to paint ceramics. I have found these activities to be very therapeutic. Bethan the physio has helped me a lot and I have enjoyed using the new gym equipment.

I can honestly say I do not know where I would be now if it were not for my time at Lewis-Manning.

I have stayed overnight on a few occasions which I have very much enjoyed. The first night I stayed was the first time in 8 years that I had been away from home. It was amazing!! I found spending quality time with the staff in a smaller group helpful and it enabled me to open up more and talk about how I was feeling.

I particularly enjoyed having lunch in a small group down in the in- patient lounge with the other 3 patients and the 3 staff. It was like having lunch with a group of friends. It felt like a mini break where I was spoilt and pampered for a couple of days!

Attending Lewis-Manning has helped me to forge long-lasting new friendships with other patients. I have now exchanged telephone numbers with some of them and intend to stay in touch.

Grant boost for treatment room

Hospice Life Breathlessness Clinic has changed to Better Breathing

Thanks to a grant from the Dorset Cancer Care Foundation, Lewis-Manning is currently equipping a new treatment room, which is an important step towards the hospice providing end of life care for patients.

As you may have already read in our last newsletter, the name of the Breathlessness Clinic has changed to Better Breathing Clinic. After wide-ranging discussions, it was felt this is a more appropriate title for the clinic. The new email is now betterbreathing@lewis-manning. co.uk

The grant, worth an approximate £18,500, is a big boost for the hospice, as Rachel Lapworth, Director of Development, explains, “The impact for Lewis-Manning will be to enable the inpatient unit to accept patients overnight who have more complex care needs and, in particular, who need supervised general medication and/or Controlled Drugs. Without this room being properly fitted and appropriate storage arrangements being put into place, we cannot care for those patients.

We are extremely grateful for the support of Dorset Cancer Care Foundation, and we look forward to working with them closely over the coming years as we continue to develop our services for the benefit of patients in the East Dorset community; and, ultimately, to respond to the overwhelming need for end of life care.”

Ros in Better Breathing Clinic explains techniques to improve breathing

Dorset Lymphoedema Steering Group hold Awareness Day event The Dorset Lymphoedema Steering Group, which is made up of healthcare professionals from local health trusts and hospitals, held a special conference in Wimborne as part of Lymphoedema Awareness Week in March.

The event, which was attended by over 65 health staff from across Dorset, aimed to raise the awareness of the condition and the local referral pathway available to specialist services. There were presentations and discussions on treatment options and compression hosiery choices available.

Dorset Healthcare University Foundation trust, Dorset County Hospital, Poole Hospital, The Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals all had representatives at the event. The conference was chaired by Tania Wynne-Edwards, who is the Senior Lymphoedema

Thank you Phyllis A special thank you to Phyllis, who has not only been a lymphoedema patient with us for 17 years, but has also been raising money for the hospice over the same period using Steradent tubes!

Phyllis, who is 90 years old, has been filling the tubes with 20p pieces and has managed £1,135 so far, for which we are extremely grateful. Phyllis originally moved down from Harrow to Wimborne to be nearer her niece in Canford Heath. She had a diagnosis of breast cancer in her 30’s and had a mastectomy, so when she moved to Dorset, her GP recommended Lewis-Manning Hospice to help treat her lymphoedema.

1. The Live Laugh Love Ladies Club raised £275 through donations and raffle at a night held at Compton Acres.

2. The Alani String Quartet kindly donated their time to entertain guests at the Ladies Afternoon Tea. 3. We had these lovely branded polo shirts kindly produced and donated by Sharon Gardener from Inspirations (Business Gifts & Corporate Clothing). Even Lewis Bear has one!

4. We officially declared our newly equipped hospice gym open and were delighted that John Pearce from the Team GB Olympic Handball Team visited to cut the ribbon. Thanks to the fundraising efforts of our physiotherapist Bethan and her Dad, plus the enormous generosity of Parkinson’s UK and Dorset Cancer Care Foundation, we now have a wonderful range of equipment to enable our patients to keep active and improve mobility 5. Lewis-Manning was one of four lucky charities who received a cheque for £500 from the new Tesco in Kinson through the store’s Helping Hands Competition.

6. Sheila Barrett (left) knitted these Easter chicks and sold them to friends and teachers at the school where her daughter works and raised £245.20.

7. Reg and Eleanor Dunningham gave £460 to the hospice having asked for donations rather than presents when they celebrated their 60th ‘Diamond’ Wedding Anniversary.

8. Natasha Lyons bought in this lovely cake to thank the clinical team for looking after her Dad. Natasha has already been very generous to the hospice and through her company Body Jewellery Ltd has donated supplies of couch covers, paper towels and tissues, and recently also donated a couch for the Complementary Therapist room.

9. Staff from Adsa at Castlepoint helped raise £274.54 from bucket collections held on Saturday 14th February and Pancake Day, with the great help of our wonderful network of volunteers. They also organised a pancake race which had staff from surrounding businesses taking part.

14. Laura Legg was one of many staff members at Investec who enjoyed Lorna Hitchin’s Big Bear Brunch which raised £100 for the hospice and included rather posh smoked salmon and cream cheese bagels with caviar!

Gill Kershaw held a Big Bear Brunch and raised £140 by inviting her friends and family over for a Full English Breakfast plus a raffle.

Lewis-Manning launches the 100,000 Networking Club for local businesses Supply Shack , Store and Secure, Leading Edge Network, HSBC Bank, Jobshop UK, Progressive Property Network and Barclays were just a few of the local businesses that have signed up to the newly launched Lewis-Manning Hospice ‘100,000 Club’ with a pledge to raise thousands of pounds whilst networking.

The initiative aims to get 100 local businesses networking together and annually to raise £100,000 for the hospice by setting a target of £1000 each. The 100,000 Club launch took place at the hospice and began with a reception drinks served by Eau de Vie, which was then followed by a presentation on the hospice from Rachel Lapworth, our Director of Development, to over 50 guests from organisations across Dorset.

Businesses networking at launch

Maria Tidy, Fundraising Manager at the hospice, said, “It is fantastic that so many businesses have already joined our 100,000 Club with wonderful ambitious plans for their fundraising efforts. The 100,000 Club is a great idea for local businesses who want to network to promote their business but which also want to support a cause within their community. Dorset is full of businesses that can collectively have a massive impact on our work.

John Caithness, Head of Employment Tax Services at Princecroft Willis then gave a talk highlighting the benefits for local businesses of supporting the hospice before Des Day, Managing Director of Supply Shack, spoke about his company’s own recent experience of choosing Lewis-Manning as its Charity of Year. The evening concluded with Supply Shack presenting Lewis-Manning with a cheque for £1000 to kickstart the club, having previously also provided free window graphics worth £2,500 for the hospice’s revamped shop in Wimborne.

By each raising £1000 in a year, the businesses can help us reach our targets and make a real difference to patients and families.

At the same time those businesses will benefit from exclusive opportunities and benefits only open to members of the 100,000 Club. We think that £1000 is achievable for most businesses and we hope that some businesses will raise more than that but the idea is that everyone pulls together to achieve the collective target of £100,000 a year.”

It currently costs £1.2 million to run the hospice annually with approximately 80% of that coming from the support of the local community. This amount will increase to £2.8 million once the bedrooms are fully open for respite, rehabilitation and end of life care.

Maria continues, “While we have had phenomenal interest already in The 100,000 Club, we are still looking for more businesses to sign up and try to raise £1000 for the hospice. Think of it this way, £100,000 could provide 333 overnight respite stays which would be a great result.

There are many ways organisations can support us and we would welcome the chance to talk to them about joining the 100,000 Club. By working together we can not only support the local community but also demonstrate to their employees, customers and investors that they are a caring organisation prepared to invest in their local community.”

Caroline Pope, from Supply Shack, which provides office stationery, printing, pop up banners and branded goods, said, “We were very proud to contribute £3,500 to this amazing hospice and the crucial work they do. As a Social Enterprise there is a social mission at the very heart of everything we do. Including social enterprises in your supply chain is an easy and effective way of maximising your own social impact. Buying social means your money goes further.”

Hospice Awareness Month June is National Hospice Awareness Month, so once again we are appealing to the community to don their brightest sunshine yellow clothes throughout June to highlight the important role of hospices in the local community and also raise some vital funds.

Maria Tidy, Fundraising Manager, said, “The colour yellow represents hope, memory and the hospice movement, so we thought that there was no better way to celebrate Hospice Awareness Month than to dig out your brightest sunshine colours and raise funds for our hospice.

“Some people go all out with face paints and wigs, and others are a bit more discrete choosing to accessorise with yellow scarves, jewellery, hair clips, and badges. One of our nurses has dressed as a banana and we’ve even had a patient come to the hospice dressed as a Big Bird from Sesame Street.”

There will also be a number of great events on throughout the month of June for people to attend and support Lewis-Manning, with our annual Wear Yellow Day taking place on June 24th.
