Ptolemy’s Tetrabiblos in the Translation of William of Moerbeke
Humanistica Lovaniensia
Fate, Providence and Moral Responsibility in Ancient, Medieval and Early Modern Claudii Ptolemaei Liber Iudicialium Thought Gudrun Vuillemin-Diem, Carlos Steel (eds)
First ever printed edition of the Latin translation of Ptolemy’s masterwork This is the first edition ever printed of Moerbeke’s Latin translation of Ptolemy’s celebrated astrological handbook, known under the title Tetrabiblos or Quadripartitum (opus). Ptolemy’s treatise (composed after 141 ad) offers an overview of astrological science and had, together with his Almagest, an enormous influence up until the 17th century. William of Moerbeke’s translation was made directly from the Greek and is a major scholarly achievement manifesting Moerbeke’s genius as a translator and as a scientist. This edition makes possible a better assessment of the great medieval translator and also contributes to a better understanding of the Greek text of Ptolemy’s masterwork. gudrun vuillemin-diem is the editor of Moerbeke’s translations of the Metaphysics and Meteorology in the series of the Aristoteles latinus. carlos steel is Professor Emeritus at the Institute of Philosophy and former President of the Institute of Medieval Studies, KU Leuven. He is director of the Aristoteles latinus and is editor of Henry Bate, a friend of Moerbeke, as well as of Proclus, John Scottus Eriugena, and Albert the Great.

Essays on key moments in the intellectual history of the West This book forms a major contribution to the discussion on fate, providence, and moral responsibility in Antiquity, the Middle Ages and Early Modern times. Through 37 original papers, renowned scholars and young researchers, write the history of the philosophical problems of freedom and determinism since its origins in pre-socratic philosophy up to the seventeenth century. The main focus points are classic Antiquity, the Neoplatonic synthesis of late Antiquity, and thirteenth-century scholasticism. These points not only represent key moments in the intellectual history of the West, but also feature the central figures and periods to which Carlos Steel, the dedicatary of this volume, has devoted his philosophical career. The Art of Arguing in the World of Renaissance Humanism Marc Laureys, Roswitha Simons (eds)
Strategies and characteristics of scournful criticism and fierce debate in the Humanist tradition The programmatic nature of Renaissance humanism led the humanists to conflicts with those who represented other intellectual traditions, first and foremost the Scholastics. In addition, competition among humanists sparked violent quarrels. In the 16th century, the practice of dispute was partly reshaped by new national and confessional divides. This volume sheds light on the characteristics and strategies of the humanist art of arguing through a series of case studies. The contributors show how humanists constantly remodelled the art of arguing by exploiting in ever new ways the Classical rhetoric of blame and paved the way for the early modern culture of dispute. For a list of contributing authors go to www.lup.be. marc laureys is Professor of Medieval Latin and Neo-Latin Philology as well as Founding Director of the Centre for the Classical Tradition at the University of Bonn. roswitha simons is Research Associate at the Center for Medieval and Early Modern Studies of the University of Göttingen.
