The complex relation between gender and the representation of intellectual authority has deep roots in European history. The Christian image in the process of modern globalisation
Drawing on original research covering different periods and spaces, this book sets out to appreciate the specific place of images in the history of evangelisation in the long modern period. How can we reconceptualise the functions of the visual mediation of the gospel message, both in terms of the production and reception of this message and in terms of its effective mediators, artists, religious, and cultural ambassadors? The contributions in this book offer multiple geographical and historical insights regarding the circulation of the image on the global scale of the Christianised world or the world in the process of being Christianised, from China to Iberia. Combining the contribution of historians and art historians, the authors highlight the points of intercultural encounter and tension around preaching, catechesis, devotional practices and the propagandistic use of images. Through its aesthetic and social study of the image, and by examining the inner and outer borders of Europe and the mission lands, Eloquent Images contributes significantly to the history of evangelisation, one of the major dynamics of the first European globalisation. The role and impact of cross-cultural migrations in the modern age
Comunidad, pertenencia, extranjería reveals the central role played by labour and mercantile migration from the North Sea region in the Viceroyalty of New Spain during a critical period in the formation of colonial societies. Far from being a marginal migration, as has been believed until now, the presence of northern migrants was strategic for the expansion and maintenance of the Hispanic monarchy due to their contribution of labour, technological knowledge, commercial networks, and transnational capital. From the crosssectional analysis of the impact of this migration on the society, politics, and economy of New Spain, this work shows how it is impossible to tell the story of the Spanish empire without taking into account the role that non-Spanish Europeans played in its formation and evolution. Eleonora Poggio is a researcher in Latin American colonial history at the Centre for Concurrences in Colonial and Postcolonial Studies at Linnaeus University.

Since the beginning of the economic crisis of 2008, Spain, like other Southern European countries, has witnessed a mass departure of mostly young people looking for opportunities abroad. Leaving Spain is based on 58 autobiographical narrative interviews with recent Spanish migrants who went to the UK and Germany, and sometimes returned. By presenting a combination of in-depth case studies and comparative analyses, the author demonstrates the potential of biographical research and narrative analysis in studying contemporary Europe, including its overlapping crises. The scope of the sociological study is not limited to examining how those who left Spain experienced single phases of their migration. Instead, it focuses on the significance of migration projects in the context of their life histories and how they make sense of these experiences in retrospect. The ‘clear line’, a term coined in 1977 by Dutch essayist and artist Joost Swarte, has become shorthand in the field of comics studies for the style originally developed by Hergé and the École de Bruxelles. It refers to certain storytelling strategies that generate a deceptively simple, lucid, and hygienic narration: in Philippe Marion’s words, it is a style ‘made out of light, fluidity and limpid clarity’. By cataloguing and critically analysing clear line comics from historical and theoretical perspectives, this book offers a new outlook on the development of the style in the 20th and 21st centuries, especially focused on the context of the European bande dessinée. The Clear Line in Comics and Cinema is therefore a key theoretical work for both bande dessinée enthusiasts and comics scholars, as well as a fundamental contribution to present-day film studies and transmedial narratology. The ancient glass industry changed dramatically towards the end of the first millennium. The Roman glassmaking tradition of mineral soda glass was increasingly supplanted by the use of plant ash as the main fluxing agent at the turn of the ninth century CE. Defining primary production groups of plant ash glass has been a challenge due to the high variability of raw materials and the smaller scale of production. Islamic Glass in the Making advocates a large-scale archaeometric approach to the history of Islamic glassmaking to trace the developments in the production, trade and consumption of vitreous materials between the eighth and twelfth centuries and to separate the norm from the exception. It proposes compositional discriminants to distinguish regional production groups, and provides insights into the organisation of the glass industry and commerce during the early Islamic period. The interdisciplinary approach leads to a holistic understanding of the development of Islamic glass; assemblages from the early Islamic period in Mesopotamia, Central Asia, Egypt, Greater Syria and Iberia are evaluated, and placed in the larger geopolitical context. In doing so, this book fills a gap in the present literature and advances a large-scale approach to the history of Islamic glass. What are the possibilities and limits of engaging with colonialism in ethnological museums? This book addresses this question from within the Africa department of the Ethnological Museum in Berlin. It captures the Museum at a moment of substantial transformation, as it prepared the move of its exhibition to the Humboldt Forum, a newly built and contested cultural centre on Berlin’s Museum Island. The book discusses almost a decade of debate in which German colonialism was negotiated, and further recognised, through conflicts over colonial museum collections. Based on two years of ethnographic fieldwork examining the Museum’s various work practices, this book highlights the Museum’s embeddedness in colonial logics and shows how these unfold in the Museum’s everyday activity. It addresses the diverse areas of expertise in the Ethnological Museum – the preservation, storage, curation, and research of collections – and also draws on archival research and oral history interviews with current and former employees. Working through Colonial Collections unravels the ongoing and laborious processes of reckoning with colonialism in the Ethnological Museum’s present – processes from which other ethnological museums, as well as Western museums more generally, can learn. This volume is the first complete critical edition of Peter of Auvergne’s Questiones super I–VII libros Politicorum. The Questiones was produced at the Faculty of Arts of Paris sometime between late 1291 and 1296 and is the earliest surviving commentary in question form on Aristotle’s Politics. As the introduction explains, the Questiones was philosophically innovative and became the most influential question-commentary on the Politics in the Middle Ages. The volume also includes a critical edition of an earlier oral report (reportatio) of Peter’s teaching on Books I–II and part of III which became the basis for those sections of the Questiones. This volume is of interest to scholars of medieval philosophy and the history of political thought and is a reference point for future research on the medieval reception of Aristotle’s Politics and medieval Aristotelian practical philosophy more broadly.

Academisch erfgoed Leuven – Inkijk in de rijke archeologische collectie van KU Leuven
Boegbeeld in de kelder schetst de bewogen geschiedenis van de gevarieerde archeologische collectie van KU Leuven. De eerste professor archeologie in ons land, kanunnik Edmond Reusens, bouwde vanaf 1864 een didactische collectie archeologie uit in het Maria-Theresiacollege. In de eerste helft van de 20ste eeuw werd de verzameling succesvol uitgebreid dankzij de inspanningen van René Maere, Raymond A.G. Lemaire en Fernand Mayence, hoogleraren in respectievelijk de christelijke archeologie, architectuurgeschiedenis en klassieke archeologie. De verwoesting van de historische inboedel van de Universiteitsbibliotheek bij aanvang van de Eerste Wereldoorlog, werd immers grotendeels gecompenseerd door Griekse schenkingen, Duitse restituties en eigen aankopen voor de archeologische collectie. Tijdens het interbellum verwierven de musea voor christelijke en klassieke archeologie een ereplaats in de Universiteitshal. Ze werden een waar uithangbord, een ‘boegbeeld’, van de Leuvense alma mater. In de decennia die hierop volgden, verloor de collectie echter geleidelijk aan haar glans en toen de universiteit na 1968 werd opgesplitst, werden de stukken gelijk verdeeld. Maar zelfs vanuit de kelders en gangen van de faculteit Letteren, waar het Leuvense deel uiteindelijk belandde, bleef de collectie haar oorspronkelijke didactische rol vervullen. Tot vandaag blijft het Didactisch Museum Archeologie met haar rijke en verscheiden collectie knipogen naar de wereldgeschiedenis. Jonas Danckers heeft als doctor in de archeologie (KU Leuven, Università di Bologna) een bijzondere interesse in de geschiedenis van de archeologie en is vandaag verbonden aan PARCUM, Museum en expertisecentrum voor religieuze kunst en cultuur. Bernard Van den Driessche was jarenlang administrateur en archivaris van Musée de Louvain-la-Neuve (Université Catholique de Louvain), vandaag Musée L.
