Gewijzigde herdruk van het succesvolle handboek ‘Economie. Een inleiding’ De financiële crisis van 2007-2008, de inzinking van de economische activiteit in 2009, en de blijvende macro-economische turbulenties sinds 2010, brachten de economie volop in de belangstelling. Wat is er gewijzigd ten opzichte van de editie uit 2010?

Drie jaar na de herziening van het handboek blijven de macro-economische turbulenties groter dan ooit. Ze spelen zich af tegen de achtergrond van monetaire beleidsexperimenten: de ‘quantitative easing’ van de Federal Reserve, of de ‘Abenomics’ in Japan. Sinds de vorige druk van dit handboek is de controverse over het in Europa gevolgde beleid alleen maar toegenomen.

Redenen genoeg om het boek te actualiseren met recente cijfers en gebeurtenissen: • In het macro-economisch deel van hoofdstuk 14 tot en met 26 werden het gros van de tabellen en grafieken geactualiseerd op basis van de ameco dataset van april 2013.

• Verwijzingen naar de recentste economische ontwikkelingen en debatten werden in de tekst toegevoegd.

• Fouten uit de vorige editie werden gecorrigeerd.

In zijn nieuwste boek laat Martin Hinoul de lezer kennis maken met entre­ preneurs als o.a. Steve Jobs, Robert Swanson, Sir Alec Broers, Lieven Gevaert, Martine Reynaers en Erik De Clercq. Terwijl België een koloniaal verleden heeft in Afrika, is India als voormalig Britse kolonie meer op de Angelsaksische wereld gericht. Toch hebben beide landen elkaars paden vaak gekruist met boeiende momenten van interculturele uitwisseling tot gevolg. Dit boek vertelt hoe en wanneer dat gebeurde.

India trok eeuwenlang mensen uit onze regio’s aan. Zeelui en handelaars, missionarissen en ontwikkelingshelpers, reizigers en avonturiers vonden allemaal hun weg naar het Indiase subcontinent. Maar het land fascineerde ook mensen in België zelf. Indologen en yogaleraars associeerden India met oude culturen en spiritualiteit. Bij het brede publiek leefde vooral het beeld van India als de exotische thuishaven van maharadja’s en fakirs. Door de groeiende Indiase diaspora leren steeds meer Belgen de laatste decennia ook echte Indiërs kennen.

Het wiel van Ashoka verschijnt in het kader van Europalia India. Dit toonaangevend internationaal festival loopt van 4 oktober 2013 tot 26 januari 2014 en brengt India naar het hart van Europa.

Met Jean-Philippe Rameau, 1683-1764. Een kennismaking schreef Ignace Bossuyt de eerste monografie in het Nederlands over Rameau als componist. De auteur situeert Rameaus oeuvre binnen de context van zijn tijd en bespreekt op een toegankelijke manier representatieve werken uit alle muziekgenres waarin hij actief was. Met deze kennismaking plaatst Bossuyt het fascinerende, maar nog te weinig bekende oeuvre van deze Franse barokcomponist in de kijker en gidst hij de luisteraar vakkundig door het muzikaal landschap van het laatbarokke Frankrijk.

Selectie uit 10 jaar Karakter. Tijdschrift van Wetenschap In 2013 viert Karakter. Tijdschrift van Wetenschap zijn tienjarig bestaan. De hoofdredacteurs van het tijdschrift selecteerden vijftien essays uit de voorbije jaren, die samen een beeld geven van de cultuur van de hedendaagse wetenschap. In Onweerstaanbaar veranderlijk gaat het over de wijze waarop wetenschappelijke disciplines worden gevormd, over concepten die zwarte dozen blijken te zijn, over carrières en modes, over geleerden die activisten worden, over publiekswetenschap.

Eerste monografie in het Nederlands over Jean-Philippe Rameau In de eerste helft van de 18de eeuw stond Jean-Philippe Rameau als compo­ nist in Frankrijk op eenzame hoogte, zeker wat het genre van het muziektheater betreft. Zoals Haendel voor de Italiaanse opera en het Engelse oratorium een betekenisvolle rol gespeeld heeft en Bach voor de Duitse cantate en de passie, zo is Rameau als hun tijdgenoot voor het Franse muziektheater een centrale figuur. Muziekgenres als de tragédie lyrique, de opéra-ballet, de comédie lyrique, de acte de ballet en de pastorale héroïque verrijkte hij met beklijvende meesterwerken. Daarnaast leverde hij een waardevolle bijdrage tot de kamermuziek, het repertoire voor klavecimbel, de ontwikkeling van de Franse cantate en het psalmmotet. Onderzoek naar de complexe negentiende-eeuwse stadsbeleving Negentiende-eeuwers hadden het niet bepaald gemakkelijk om hun eigen steden te begrijpen. Hoe kon het ook anders: industrialisering, technologische vooruitgang en verhoogde mobiliteit veranderden de toenmalige leefruimte in een onwaarschijnlijk tempo. Dat bracht bruuske perspectiefwijzigingen teweeg en steeds veranderende belevingen van de ruimte die op hun beurt weer tot tal van uitdagingen, maar ook spanningen en paradoxen leidden. Werd de stad de ene keer met vrijheid, rijkdom, spektakel en artistieke inspiratie geassocieerd, de andere keer merkte men slechts de ongezondheid, de eenzaamheid, de zedeloosheid en de herrie ervan op.

In dit boek gaan historici en literatuurwetenschappers op zoek naar deze complexe beleving van de stedelijke ruimte in de negentiende eeuw. Door zowel het gedrag als de teksten van eigentijdse literatoren centraal te stellen biedt deze publicatie nieuwe inzichten in de negentiende-eeuwse spektakel- en amusementscultuur, in de relatie tussen stad en natuur en de omgang met stedelijk erfgoed.

New perspectives on Belgian Surrealism and the photographic practices of Marcel Mariën Marcel Mariën (1920–1993) was a key figure of Belgian post-war Surrealism.

He is widely acknowledged for his landmark work on Belgian Surrealism and his collaboration with future Situationists like Guy-Ernest Debord in his journal Les Lèvres nues. Nevertheless, Mariën’s texts, collages, photographs, film, and (art?) objects have to date remained understudied.

This is the first volume devoted to Mariën’s photographic work. Through a series of close readings, Mieke Bleyen connects the collage and photographic practices of Mariën with his wider oeuvre, particularly with his archival and editorial activities. By applying Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari’s concept of the ‘minor’, this book proposes an alternative reading of Mariën’s anti-aesthetics and focuses on the affective range of his work.

The figure of Mariën also serves as a case study that offers new perspectives on Belgian Surrealism’s relation to mainstream Surrealism and the role of photography within Surrealism. This volume, moreover, raises a critique on ‘major’ art history’s conception of time as linear progression and argues instead for twisted and extended temporalities in the case of Marcel Mariën.

Magritte’s interarts dialogue with literature The Belgian Surrealist artist René Magritte (1898–1967) is well known for his thought-provoking and witty images that challenge the observer’s preconditioned perceptions of reality.

Magritte and Literature examines some of the artist’s major paintings whose titles were influenced by and related to works of literature. Baude­ laire’s The Flowers of Evil, Goethe’s Elective Affinities, and Poe’s The Domain of Arnheim are representative examples of Magritte’s interarts dialog with literary figures. Despite these convergences the titles subvert the images in his paintings. It is the two images together that express the aesthetics of Surrealism – for example, the juxtaposition of unrelated objects whose purpose is to spark recognition. Magritte’s challenge to representation compares with metafiction’s challenge to classic realism, Les Chants de Maldoror for example, and the intersecting space between art and writing, sometimes referred to as the iconotext, manifests itself when­ever Magritte borrows a literary title for a painting. His strategy is to paint visible thought, and this reverse ekphrasis, the opposite of a rhetorical description, undermines the written text. When he succeeds, the effect is poetry.

Exploring the complex and intimate relations between sound, score and notation Sound and Score brings together music expertise from prominent international researchers and performers exploring the intimate relations between sound and score and the artistic possibilities that this relationship yields for performers, composers and listeners.

Considering ‘notation’ as the totality of words, signs, and symbols encountered on the road to an accurate and effective performance of music, this book embraces different styles and periods in a comprehensive understanding of the complex relations between invisible sound and mute notation, between aural perception and visual representation, and between the concreteness of sound and the iconic essence of notation.

Three main perspectives structure the analysis: a conceptual approach that offers contributions from different fields of enquiry (history, musicology, semiotics), a practical one that takes the skilled body as its point of departure (written by performers), and finally an experimental perspective that challenges state-of-the-art practices, including transdisciplinary approaches in the crossroads to visual arts and dance.

The experimental approach of science applied to artistic research We don’t know what we don’t know. This makes it difficult to imagine research that will produce new knowledge. In the sciences, the experimental approach has proved its worth in generating what subsequently requires understanding. Can the field of artistic research be inspired by recent thinking about the history and workings of science? How can artists engage with experimentation to extend artistic values and deliver future knowledge?

In this book fourteen contemporary artists, musicians, and theorists engage with Hans-Jörg Rheinberger’s theory of experimental systems to determine how experimentation can be put to work in the arts. An interview with Rheinberger himself probes research as a potentially shared space between the otherwise different activities of art and science.

A revealing study of the physical presence of the musician in musical performance Fingers slipping over guitar strings, the tap of a bow against the body of a cello, a pianist humming along to the music: contemporary composers often work with parasitic, non-conventional sounds such as these. Are they to be perceived as musical elements or do they shift attention to the physical effort of music-making, contact between a body and an instrument?

Composer Paul Craenen explores ways in which the musician’s body is revealed in musical performance. He leads us from Cage, Lachenmann, Kagel and their contemporaries to a discussion of how today’s generation of young composers is writing a body paradigm into composition itself.

Micro-temporal physical gestures and instrumental timbre provide the key to unveiling the physical presence of both a musician and a ‘composing body’.

The author’s concept of ‘intercorporeality’, along with the idea of an alternating linear and non-linear relationship of the composing body to time, casts new light on the relationship between musicians, composers, and music consumers.

The construction of gender in Belgian Catholicism Although women were called the ‘pious sex’ much earlier, it was during the nineteenth century, when the differences between men and women were being made more explicit, that an intense bond between women and religion was developed. Religiosity was thought to be a ‘natural’ part of femininity and turned religious masculinity into an oddity. This clearcut gender ideology, however, remains an ideology (prescribed and contested) that needs to be put in the perspective of its context of origin, the bourgeois milieu. How were these gender identities constructed and by whom?

With this volume Van Osselaer seeks to clarify how the gender differentiation was created among Belgian Catholics. She brings to light the extent to which religiosity was inscribed in these constructions and how religious teachings contributed to it. It is clear that the limitations of the ‘feminization’ thesis, a master narrative that has strongly contributed to the introduction of women in religious history, have gradually become more visible.

Documenting pastoral care, the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Catholic Action, The Pious Sex offers critical commentaries on the master narratives, suggesting that even men could belong to a ‘pious sex’.

Filosofische verklaring van agressie als een inherent aspect van de mens Met het fascinerende thema van de agressiviteit is er iets opmerkelijks aan de hand. In vergelijking met de talloze studies over de Eros wordt er in de geschiedenis van de filosofie relatief weinig aandacht besteed aan de plaats en de rol van de agressiviteit als een oorspronkelijke dimensie van onze menselijke existentie. Behalve in de moraalfilosofische traditie werd de agressiviteit zelden het expliciete voorwerp van wijsgerig-antropologisch onderzoek. humans are beings of the in-between. The human being is essentially tied up between psychopathology and culture, and ‘normality’ cannot be defined in a theoretically convincing manner.

Philippe Van Haute and Tomas Geyskens call this Freudian anthropology a patho-analysis of existence or a clinical anthropology. This anthropology gives a new meaning to the Nietzschean dictum that the human being is a ‘sick animal’.

Freud, and later Lacan, first developed this anthropological insight in relation to hysteria (in its relation to literature).

The patho-analytic perspective progressively disappears in Freud’s texts after1905. This book reveals the crucial moments of that development. In doing so, it shows clearly not only that Freud introduced the Oedipus complex much later than is usually assumed, but also that the theory of the Oedipus complex is irreconcilable with the project of a clinical anthropology.

The authors not only examine the philosophical meaning of this thesis in the work of Freud. They also examine its avatars in the texts of Jacques Lacan and show how this project of a patho-analysis of existence inevitably obliges us to formulate a non-oedipal psychoanalytic anthropology.

tine van osselaer works as a post­ doctoral Researcher of the Research Foundation Flanders at KU Leuven.

The construction of gender in Belgian Catholicism Although women were called the ‘pious sex’ much earlier, it was during the nineteenth century, when the differences between men and women were being made more explicit, that an intense bond between women and religion was developed. Religiosity was thought to be a ‘natural’ part of femininity and turned religious masculinity into an oddity. This clearcut gender ideology, however, remains an ideology (prescribed and contested) that needs to be put in the perspective of its context of origin, the bourgeois milieu. How were these gender identities constructed and by whom?

With this volume Van Osselaer seeks to clarify how the gender differentiation was created among Belgian Catholics. She brings to light the extent to which religiosity was inscribed in these constructions and how religious teachings contributed to it. It is clear that the limitations of the ‘feminization’ thesis, a master narrative that has strongly contributed to the introduction of women in religious history, have gradually become more visible.

Documenting pastoral care, the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Catholic Action, The Pious Sex offers critical commentaries on the master narratives, suggesting that even men could belong to a ‘pious sex’.

In vergelijking met de talloze studies over de Eros wordt er in de geschiedenis van de filosofie relatief weinig aandacht besteed aan de plaats en de rol van de agressiviteit als een oorspronkelijke dimensie van onze menselijke existentie. Behalve in de moraalfilosofische traditie werd de agressiviteit zelden het expliciete voorwerp van wijsgerig-antropologisch onderzoek.
