As summer finds its stride, it offers a myriad of opportunities to see some of the best golfers in the world right here in our own backyard. It starts with the Korn Ferry Tour’s return to the Glen Club in Glenview July 24-27 and the NV5 Invitational. Then it’s LIV Golf’s second year playing at Bolingbrook Golf Club August 8-10. Finally, the top collegiate teams, including NCAA Champion Northwestern (women), will compete in the Jackson T. Stephens Cup September 15–17 at Shoreacres, the historic club nestled along Lake Michigan in north suburban Lake Bluff. You can read more about each of these events in our Sweet Home Chicago department later in the magazine.
Our summer issue of GOLFChicago brings our readers on a coast-to-coast journey through the heart of golf. From fresh product innovations to stunning landscapes and expert instruction, this month’s features are curated to inspire, educate, and ignite your passion for the game.
We begin with a look at the newest golf gear shaking up the market in our Good Stuff Department—ranging from one of the healthiest sports drink on the market (touted by the likes of Michelle Obama and Stephen Curry) to precision-engineered irons from Cobra, aputter from Ping, and a hockey-inspired putter by Odyssey (aka Happy Gilmore).
We’ll head to Willow Hill Golf Club, a family-owned course perched on a scenic bluff in Northbrook. Known for its dramatic views and challenging layout, Willow Hill blends Midwest charm with Scottish links-style character. It’s a far cry from the old garbage dump that I used to visit while working for the Glenview Public Works Department back in the late 1980s.
Venturing west, we uncover the high-altitude beauty of Colorado Springs, where mountain views and crisp air create a golf experience like no other. We’ll visit the legendary Broadmoor Resort, host to last month’s United States Senior Open, Garden of the Gods Resort, and to one of the oldest courses west of the Mississippi.
Farther north, Tributary Golf Club in Wyoming offers a remote, luxurious retreat where wildlife sightings rival the championship-level course conditions. Each round feels like an escape, and a challenge, all in the shadows of the Grand Tetons Mountain range.
Back here in the Midwest, editorial contributor Joe Aguilar spotlights Elevation Golf in Burr Ridge, a cutting-edge training facility where biomechanics meet passion. Here, golfers fine-tune every aspect of their game—even during Chicago’s coldest months.
For those looking to build a more consistent swing, our Instruction department breaks down the start of the golf swing, emphasizing setup and takeaway to set you up for success from the first move.
Traveling to Michigan’s Island Resort and Casino, senior writer Neal Kotlarek shares how golf and entertainment go hand in hand. With world-class courses like Sweetgrass and Sage Run just steps from the casino floor, this Upper Peninsula destination is quickly becoming a Midwest golf mecca.
We’ll also delve into the world of acclaimed golf course architect Todd Clark, whose designs prioritize playability, sustainability, and beauty. In an exclusive interview, Clark shares the stories behind some of his most memorable projects and how he balances modern innovation with classic principles.
This issue also pays homage to the greats of the game from right here in Illinois by introducing you to this year’s Illinois Golf Hall of Fame inductees.
So here’s to the summer. Enjoy it while it lasts.
THE GOOD STUFF
Skort with Style
Mallet Meets Blade
If you prefer a blade putter over a mallet putter, then the new Envroll V5.2 could be for you. The stainless-steel face and front section of each putter provides the feel of a blade from the hitting area, while the rear aluminum chassis and four tungsten weights positioned deep and low offer the CG and MOI benefits of a mallet. It was designed by Guerin Rife, who came up with innovative wands for his Rife Putter Company and other manufacturers for years. The clean, cool look of stainless steel and black prongs emits confidence, leading to more made putts.

Aproper takeaway is one of the foundational components of a solid golf swing. If things go off track in the first few feet of movement, the entire swing sequence can be compromised, leading to inconsistent ball striking, loss of power, and directional issues. One key checkpoint during the takeaway is keeping the clubhead “outside the hands” as the club moves back from the address. This doesn’t mean forcing the club away from your body; rather, it refers to maintaining proper width and sequencing in the takeaway to set up a more efficient swing path.
Many amateurs mistakenly roll the clubhead inside too early by rotating the forearms or dragging the handle back with their hands. This move flattens the swing plane prematurely and can lead to an overthe-top move on the downswing, weak slices, or blocks. To help correct this and develop a fundamentally sound takeaway, you can use a simple training aid that’s probably already in your bag: alignment sticks. Why the Clubhead Should Stay Outside the Hands
Let’s clarify what we mean by “clubhead outside the hands.” If you were to pause your swing just a couple of feet into the backswing (around when the club shaft is parallel to the ground), the clubhead should be slightly outside the line of your hands when viewed from down the target line. In this position, the clubhead is not behind your
Train Your Takeaway
body or rolled inside; it’s more in line with your target and keeps the shaft on plane. This positioning encourages:
• Proper rotation of the shoulders and torso instead of the hands
• A wider arc, which increases potential speed and consistency
• A more neutral clubface, helping with square impact
How to Use Alignment Sticks to Train the Takeaway
Setup: to get started, grab two alignment sticks: Stick #1: Lay one on the ground aimed at your target. This acts as your target line and helps square up your stance and aim. Stick #2: This is your takeaway guide. Stick it in the ground at about a 45-degree angle just outside your trail foot, about three to four feet (right foot for right-handed golfers, left foot for a left- handed golfer), aligned parallel to your target line. The top of the stick should point upward, mimicking your ideal shaft angle during the takeaway.
Here’s a step-by-step breakdown of the drill:
The Outside-the-Hands Takeaway Guide
Set up to the ball with your normal posture and grip. Use the ground stick to align your feet, hips, and shoulders parallel to your target line.
Take your club back slowly, focusing on keeping the clubhead just outside your
hands as the club moves to a waist-high position. The goal is to match the shaft angle to the stick in the ground (Stick #2).
Use visual feedback: If your clubhead swings too far inside, you’ll either miss the alignment stick completely or notice your shaft gets too flat and inside. If you’re too steep, you might feel like you’re picking the club up vertically and disconnecting your arms from your body.
Check the position of your elbows. You should feel as if they are squeezing together as you start your backswing. Stop when the club is parallel to the ground and check that your trail elbow is higher than your lead elbow. If it is, you will find it hard to roll the club as explained earlier.
Repeat several reps, stopping at the waist-high position to check your form. Over time, try to make the movement more fluid without stopping.
Common Mistakes
Rolling the clubface open: A common misstep is allowing the clubface to open too much during the takeaway, often paired with the clubhead moving inside. Keep the clubface square to your spine angle as it rotates back. It should match the angle of your back.
Dragging the handle: Pulling the club back with your hands causes the clubhead to swing too far inside and behind the hands. Make sure the movement is led by your upper body, not just your arms.
Lifting instead of turning: Picking the club up vertically in an effort to “stay outside” often leads to a disconnected, steep motion. The club should move naturally on plane—this drill is about improving awareness, not creating artificial mechanics.
Final Thought
Using alignment sticks to train your takeaway is a simple, affordable, and incredibly effective way to improve your full swing fundamentals. By focusing on keeping the clubhead outside your hands in the early part of your swing, you’ll build a better backswing structure, increase consistency, and ultimately strike the ball more cleanly and powerfully.
Next time you head to the range, bring a couple of alignment sticks and give this takeaway drill a try. With just a few reps a day, you’ll start seeing—and feeling—the difference.

Once you get off the plane in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and take the twisting and curving pass to Driggs, Idaho, you have found a golfer’s heaven called Tributary, a 1,500-acre private residential community on the west side of the Teton mountain range. Designed by well-known Scottish architect David McLay Kidd of
Golfer’s Heaven in Idaho
DMK Golf Designs, this 18-hole course is truly an experience that you will remember. Everywhere you look are spectacular views of the Teton Mountains and the endless streams that peacefully flow all throughout the course.
Driggs, Victor,Tetonia, and other Idaho towns share the Teton Mountain Range with
the neighboring valley of Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The Teton Valley is along the eastern border of Idaho, tucked against the 13,000 peaks of the Grand Teton range. Some call the Teton Valley “the quiet side of the Tetons.”
Tributary opened in 2008 and was refreshed in 2023. Kidd’s team originally focused on bunkers, but after a strategic review was then expanded to the entire course. Kidd created a breathtaking, stunning path, using what only nature gave him.
Surrounded by the Tetons, the course is carved around the many tributaries that meet several times within the landscape.
Kidd often says, “We give birth, but Mother Nature created an incredible path that guided our team to create a unique identity and harmony with nature that we found throughout Tributary. It is one of my great achievements and one of my best-kept secrets. I am very proud of the finished design”.
Tributary includes 52 acres of wetlands artistically woven through the golf course. Golfers will experience the challenges and joys of playing in high elevations with majestic skies and large fairways.
Each day, members and their guests have the opportunity to see through the clouds for a spectacular view of the Tetons.

Triburary Hole #9
Triburary Hole #18
Golfers follow “nature paths” from each tee and green to the next hole.
Many who have played Tributary have said, “It reminds me of Scotland.” That would please Kidd for sure.
Each spring, ahead of the course opening, the Tributary team evaluates bunkers as well as the overall design. Taking into account new technology and equipment, some of the bunkers may be re-positioned ,not only for experienced golfers, but also for less-experienced golfers, so they can play along side each other.
Tributary also features an incredible clubhouse with a restaurant and bar; a wellness facility with a fitness center and spa; a pool and hot tub with mountain views; seven fishing ponds; endless trails for cross-country skiing and walking; and a recreation barn with hatchet throwing, e-biking, and paddle boarding. Plus, an elevated boardwalk through the 500-acre property offers perfect opportunities for wildlife viewing.
I would highly recommend Tributary and definitely would play it again and again. Tributary has been consistently ranked as one of Golfweek ’s best private courses.

Joe Aguilar
Long before Mike Mandakas became an entrepreneur in the golf industry, he had dreams of running a business because as he jokes, “That’s what us Greek’s do”
After graduating in 1997 from Hoffman Estates high school, he decided to continue his academic and athletic career at William Woods University in Fulton, Missouri. “I was one of the first male students to ever go to WWU, so the first few years we had pretty good male/female odds on campus” he recalls with a laugh. The school, located about 20 miles east of Columbia, Missouri, had been an all-girls institution for over 100 years before it added male students starting in 1997 with a men’s soccer and men’s volleyball team.
Mandakas didn’t grow up playing golf. He focused on baseball, basketball, and soccer through high school, and showed enough talent that he was recruited to play soccer at William Woods as a kicker without ever playing a down of soccer.
He played all four years on the soccer team. In addition, he decided to try out for the golf team his senior year in 2001. Mike added, “I had never played a competitive round of golf before then.” He ended up making the team and began his golf career.
Mike Mandakas: Elevating the Game
Building Elevation Golf
Fast-forward to 2016 when Mandakas founded Elevation Golf. His flagship Burr Ridge facility feels more like a boutique experience than a gym—complete with up-scale ambiance, seven Foresight and Trackman-equipped hitting bays, a large putting green, and a fully-outfitted performance gym, all within 8,000 square feet.
“In the Midwest, there’s a lot of great golf instructors,” Mandakas explained, “My team and I just teach the game a little different than others. I always wanted to build an environment for golfers and athletes to improve their technical, mental, and physical skills.” Elevation Golf in Burr Ridge is the indoor Chicago home where they have created a one-stop-shop for all things golf. What makes them unique is all of their offerings in one location. Instead of having to go to multiple locations to work on your game, get fitted for clubs, get in a workout, host an event … You can do all of this at one place. Elevation Golf is open to the public, but also has membership offerings for the avid golfer.
At Elevation Golf, clients work with PGA golf instructors, TPI fitness trainers, master club fitters, mental performance coaches, sports medicine specialists, and
college recruiters under one roof. Mike has built an impressive team of professionals that focus on different areas of golf and performance. “I have been fortunate to attract so many great people that want to be a part of our team to help grow the game of golf.”
The approach is working, as Elevation Golf works with golfers of all levels from beginners to advanced and golfers of all ages. Nic Brown, a Downers Grove resident, joined the program two years ago and has dropped roughly 10 strokes from his game, reaching a 13.5 handicap. “I like to work out, but I never thought about how that applied to my golf game until Elevation,”
Brown said. “It’s helped me tremendously” as Nic works with multiple coaches in the academy on his golf skills that include full swing, short game, putting, on-course coaching and fitness training.
A Career Shaped by Passion
Even though Mandakas had dreams of running a business after college, Mike’s passion for sports lead him into learning about biomechanics—gaining an understanding of how the body moves through athletics during two years of studying sports medicine, in addition to becoming
a Business Management and Marketing major. Mandakas says, “I was fortunate to be able to learn about both running a business and sports medicine in college, which helped set my path after I graduated”
After college, Mandakas boldly walked into Indian Lakes Resort in 2001 and told the pro he himself wanted to be a golf professional. He was hired as a shop assistant, and within just a few months was helping run the golf operations.
From there, he climbed the ranks: assistant golf professional at Desert Mountain Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona, a return to Chicago as first assistant professional at Medinah Country Club, then associate head professional at Olympia Fields Country Club. Eventually, he opened an outdoor golf academy in the southwest suburbs, but moved the business indoors when an opportunity to open year-round facility surfaced in Willowbrook, Illinois. In 2016 he created Elevation Golf.
The company has since expanded locally with a second indoor location in Chicago’s Lincoln Park featuring four simulators and a fitness gym. Elevation also partners with Flossmoor Golf Club, Oak Brook Golf Club, and Willow Crest Golf Club where they provide outdoor instruction
and club fitting. Beyond Chicago, Elevation Golf Academy also has had a significant presence in the Indianapolis area. They have a team of golf instructors, club fitters and builders, and fitness trainers at their year-round indoor/outdoor location at Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel, Indiana. Elevation also has a partnership in Dallas, Texas, along with another market opening soon in Kansas City, Missouri.
Today, Mike’s titles include PGA Professional, TPI Certified Trainer, Master Club Fitter, and U.S. Kids Certified Coach. He wears many hats but has been the “Golf Guy” to many of his family, friends, and clients. Mike coaches golfers of all skill levels and has helped many students with amateur and professional tour event wins. Mike adds “Being inside the ropes at a PGA Tour event with a student is something very special, but I also enjoy teaching new golfers how to play the game. Working with golfers through their development is very rewarding, whether they are a competitive golfer or they just play the game for fun.”
Beyond Instruction: Elevation Travel
In 2024, Mandakas launched Elevation Travel, partnering with the DuPage County
Convention Bureau to craft corporate and group golf experiences to help drive golfers to the Chicagoland area. They handle everything from booking tee times and lodging to planning experiences such as attending a sporting event, going on a local tour, and any other local experience their guests would like to do. Groups from Central America, South America, and Europe are already booked to come see what the Chicagoland area has to offer. Elevation Travel is also assisting DuPage County CB in promoting the upcoming 2026 Presidents Cup at Medinah Country Club. Mandakas adds, “The average golfer takes four golf trips per year, so we have created the opportunity to offer unique experiences for those golfers looking to come to Chicago or go to another destination for golf and fun.”
Elevation Travel has also started outbound travel offerings for golf groups looking to go to destinations domestically or internationally, including trips to the Masters, US Open, Ryder Cup, and even the Super Bowl.

Step up to the 1st tee on the Sweetgrass course in Michigan’s upper peninsula and breathe in both the air and the view surrounding you. You can marvel at the pristine beauty of the fairway and green before you. Or you can glance to your left and take in a view of the spacious driving range and the course’s finishing hole. Or you can turn 180 degrees to appreciate the massive hotel complex that houses the casino, a spa, a cabaret, a waterpark, accommodations, a sports book and a host of other amenities. Once you’ve absorbed the majesty of all that work and planning, think backwards to 1981 when this amazing entertainment complex was a mere hall that hosted bingo games for the express purpose of raising money for the Hannahville Indian Community’s youth baseball team.
Forty-four years and tens of millions of dollars of investment later, the resort complex has expanded in size, scope and ambition virtually every five years since its onset. On the basis of its golf offerings, Island Resort & Casino has evolved from the aforementioned Sweetgrass Course to incorporate the award-winning Sage Run eight miles down the road from the resort. And that course will introduce the 9-hole Cedar (Kishki in Potawatamie) course slated for 2026.
The Sage Run 18 was designed by Paul Albanese and pays tribute to the golden era of architecture. Some of the green complexes will emulate legendary putting surfaces, including the Punch Bowl and the Double Plateau. Plans call for one hole to emulate the famous par-3 “juniper hole” at Augusta National and the church pew bunkers at Oakmont.
“Over the past few years, demand for our two championship courses sky-rocketed,” said general manager Tony Mancilla. “The addition of the Cedar course will especially accommodate guests who want to play a quick round in the early morning before heading home,” he added. The new nine is not an addition to Sage Run; rather it’s a stand-alone course that can be played
Michigan’s Marvelous Island Resort & Casino
as a complete nine or even modified by the player to become a par-3 course that can be played in an hour or less.
Albanese also designed both the Sage Run course and the more subtle Sweetgrass course that is located steps away from the resort. Isolated from civilization on a rocky ridge carved by a receding glacier, Sage Run is an extension of the wild and wooly Michigan Upper Peninsula landscape. ‘Picturesque’ and ‘tranquil’ are adjectives that come to mind when surveying the property from the clubhouse. Starting at Hole 1 and proceeding through No. 18, golfers are reminded of the property’s farmland roots, as thick fescue grasses protect the fairways and rock outcroppings are located in unexpected areas around the vast acreage. While a number of holes are gently rolling—similar to the Sweetgrass course—others are built atop, below or across the ridge (geologically called a drumlin).
The par-3 No. 5 might look short on the scorecard, but the green rests atop the ridge and is protected by fescue and sand. Use at least two extra clubs to ensure your tee shot carries all the way to the top. The 15th hole, on the other hand, plays far shorter as the par 4 dives down the ridge steeply off the tee before rising again slightly while leading to the putting surface. Ever played over a rock creek before? The 18th hole calls for players to avoid one on the left side of this massive par-5 finishing hole.
The Island Resort Championship— an Epson Tour event featuring aspiring LPGA players—has been played annually since 2011 at the Sweetgrass course. Named “National Course of the Year” in 2022 by the National Golf Course Owners Association, the rolling layout features wide-open fairways maintained in pristine conditions. Albanese employed a variety of fun green complexes across the 18 holes, including a slanted Biarritz green, a Redan hole, and—of course—an island green befitting the resort’s moniker. Albanese serves up unique stretches of holes that fit the eye perfectly and flow effortlessly. Added flourishes to the design are plaques and symbols to honor the rich history of

the Hannahville Indian Community which owns and operates this resort casino.
The highlight of the front nine is the beautiful aforementioned 9th hole. A long drive on this par 5 provokes the player to consider a heroic second shot over a long stretch of flowing ponds leading to the green along the left side. The smarter choice is a layup short of a massive fairway bunker to set up a pitch to a large, sweeping green. Unless, of course, your name is Amelia Garvey!
Sage Run and Sweetgrass G.C. serve as marquee attractions at the constantly evolving Island Resort & Casino. The property became a full-service resort in 2007 with the opening of the hotel. The Sweetgrass championship course was unveiled a year later. The layout was immediately heralded as a “Best New Public Course in America” by Golf Digest . Four years ago, a $30 million tower added 100 new hotel rooms to the original 11-story 325-room hotel. The elegant Horizons Steakhouse, Splash Island waterpark and a convention space now attract families and business groups.
The new $19.1 million expansion plans include enlargement of the conference center and a 3,000 sq. ft. stand-alone Sweetgrass two-story clubhouse overlooking the double green 9th and 18th finishing holes. The building will include locker rooms, a full-service pro shop, a bar and an upper deck outdoor lounge where golfers can review their rounds over a cold beverage while enjoying a great view of the course.
Island Resort and Casino’s emphasis on golf extends beyond the property’s boundaries. Along with providing stay-and-play deals on Sweetgrass and Sage Run, the resort offers the popular “Perfect 4-Some Package” which provides guests discounts and access to the UP’s other two acclaimed nearby courses—Timberstone Golf Course in Iron Mountain and Greywalls at Marquette Golf Club. Although all four courses have distinctly different characters, taken as a whole they reflect everything that makes golf in the Upper Peninsula so great: breathtaking scen -
ery, great conditions and solitude far, far away from the maddening crowds.
Along with highly affordable hotel and green fee rates, “The Perfect 4-Some Package” includes a certificate for $10 off a $50 or more apparel purchase at either Sawgrass or Sage Run.
The resort has also grown its gaming options significantly since its days as a bingo destination. Table games are offered alongside slots, poker and even a sportsbook. The Island Showroom is a 1,315-seat theater that regularly attracts headline acts including rock, country and comedy.

Harbor Shores Resort, the long-time site of the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship (2012-2024), and home to a Jack Nicklaus Signature Design, is the premier golf, resort, beach destination, and waterfront community in Southwest Michigan, located just 90 minutes east of Chicago.
Golfers seeking bucket list courses that have also hosted multiple major championships should consider the course that Nicklaus has tabbed as one of his 18 favorite designs of all time. Here, along the shores of Lake Michigan, golfers will be able to check off an experience walking in the path of Hall of Fame golfers, while enjoying priceless days of quality championship golf, luxurious accommodations, exquisite dining options, and entertaining non-golf activities.
This luxury development at Harbor Shores Resort is a must-visit Midwest golf destination. Golf was the core component of the Harbor Shores development on the shores of Lake Michigan and the Paw Paw River, standing as a remarkable testament to a vision made possible by $900 million in strategic investments, led by the Whirlpool Foundation and its benefactor, the global home appliance leader Whirlpool Corporation.
Over 75 years ago, Benton Harbor became a booming industrial town during World War II, when local Whirlpool plants and factories were transformed into F.D.R.’s arsenal of democracy, manufacturing components for fighter planes. The city then evolved into a vibrant manufacturing center in the 50s and 60s, only to see it all disappear over the next two decades, leading Whirlpool to recognize that change was needed.
Walk in the Footsteps of Champions at Harbor Shores
The direct spike in jobs, redevelopment, new homebuyers, tax base, vacationers, and civic pride from the sprawling resort and residential development over the last fifteen years is almost incomprehensible when one considers what stood on these shores just over a decade ago. From lot after lot of abandoned manufacturing plants, to a focal point in a community that has been sustainably and measurably revitalized, Harbor Shores and the surrounding area is a two-decade transformational journey.
Nicklaus’ engaging routing reveals a commitment to naturalism and letting the land’s flow and contour dictate its aesthetics and playability. The course runs over four remarkably diverse terrains in a spectacular topographical locale.
The course opens with a fun, modest par 4 that leads golfers out into the wetlands portion of the golf course. The par-3 2nd, the first truly postcard-worthy hole on Harbor Shores measuring, is completely enveloped by a huge expanse of exposed sandy waste area in front of the green with wetlands along the right and behind the green. The near-drivable par-4 3rd, running along the Paw Paw River, is a beautiful and thrilling risk-reward hole. The buildup continues with the long risk-reward par-5 5th and the challenging par-4 6th, where a drive along a ravine sets up a thrilling approach downhill over wetlands that guards the green on the right.
The course now shifts from beautiful wetlands into the most scenic area on the course along Lake Michigan. A place that I refer to as the Golden Bear Dunes, where holes 7 through 9 meander up and over a
massive dune landscape. Harbor Shores’ most-photographed par 4, the dogleg-right 7th, is arguably its most demanding. From an island teeing ground, drives must navigate bunkers and a wetland along the right portion of the landing area to position an uphill approach into a small green built into the top of the dunes that overlook the beachfront and Lake Michigan. From the top of the dunes, the 8th hole follows with a challenging drive over the sandy ridge, leaving an approach to a green tucked into the dunes. The 9th hole plays from the top of the dunes with Lake Michigan behind, playing downward to the left with wetlands guarding the second shot left of the fairway and green.
Moving out of the dunes, holes 10 through 13 play through woodlands and wind through rolling hills, ravines, and a hardwood forest. The 10th hole is a reachable par 5 for longer hitters, but don’t be fooled. The massive 10,000 square foot green is reminiscent of a Himalayas putting course in Scotland. It’s also the site of Harbor Shores’ most famous hole-out. During the course’s grand opening, Nicklaus was paired with playing legends Arnold Palmer, Tom Watson, and Johnny Miller and responded to Miller’s protestation that the 120-foot putt from the green’s lower level was “impossible” by promptly draining it.
The finishing holes, 14 through 18, border the Paw Paw River, Ox Creek, and its wetlands, providing scenic and exciting shot values, like the views into the greens at 14 and 15 over the Paw Paw River. The par-4 18th finishes along a serene stretch of the stunning river in a well-treed hollow.
The thrill of playing a naturally spectacular, major-hosting course like this is a truly upscale and memorable experience. Aside from offering quality championship golf, Harbor Shores features luxurious accommodations, exquisite dining options, and entertaining non-golf activities. Imagine walking the fairways where golf’s legends have made history and then hitting shots from similar spots and lush course conditions.
The latest golf attraction at Harbor Shores Resort is the Wee Course, designed by Hall of Fame golfer and former KitchenAid
Senior PGA Champion Colin Montgomerie. Scheduled to open in 2026, this five-acre, nine-hole pitch-and-putt course will con-
sist of holes measuring 60 yards or less, modeled after the nine most iconic holes of the current Jack Nicklaus layout.
“I am very excited to be a part of such a wonderful project with the Harbor Shores Resort, a place and people that I am very close with, and to collaborate with them to create a wonderful golf amenity that will positively impact the community,” said Montgomerie. “Golf is a game for all ages and generations. Courses like the Wee Course will attract parents who play golf and want to introduce their children to the game, and grandparents who might not be able to play 18 but can bring their grandchildren along for nine holes. From my personal experience around the world and especially in Scotland, short wee courses can bring together communities and form a foundation for the whole area.”
Serious golfers will enjoy this new short course because it allows them to practice short shots in a unique setting. It’s also about creating a value proposition that complements the Harbor Shores
championship course. This experience is fun, inexpensive, and can be played in an hour. It will be the centerpiece for getting kids and families together, friends socializing, and entertainment. It will be a perfect venue to host events.
Jeff Fettig, former chairman and CEO of Whirlpool Corporation and a leading contributor through the Fettig Family Foundation, and the visionary behind this Harbor Shores expansion, sees this amenity having a major impact on the youth in the community.
“We’re so excited to work with Colin to create this new Wee Course to have an even greater positive impact on our area youth.,” said Fettig, “When we developed Harbor Shores, our mission was all about being a catalyst in the Benton Harbor community for economic development, recreation, and tourism. This project is about seeding the future.”
Complementing the Wee Course will be an 18-hole putting course inspired by similar attractions at St. Andrews and Pinehurst – replete with lighting, music, and food and beverage to make it a great gathering space for the community.

Harbor Shores Hole #7
FROM WASTE TO SCENIC WONDER AT WILLOW HILL GC
By Joe Aguilar
No one wears a kilt or plays a bagpipe here, and this is not where golf originated.
Certainly not atop a former landfill in north suburban Northbrook, where only a few years ago thistle and burr weeds dished out scratches on ankles and shins of golfers who dared go searching for their bargain ball off the rough.
But glance to the southeast from the clubhouse at spruced-up Willow Hill Golf Course, 150 feet above busy Willow Road and, for a moment, you’re transported to 15th-century Scotland.
The serendipitous view of what appears to be a castle in the distance is actually the Society of the Divine Word Techny Towers Conference and Retreat
Center, a prominent and architecturally jaw-dropping building that has stood for about 150 years.
“It looks like we’re in Scotland, doesn’t it?” Willow Hill manager Kent Knebelkamp said with a laugh.
The view of the Divine Word building in Techny has been visible at Willow Hill since the Dick Nugentdesigned nine-hole golf course opened in 1993.
Featuring a combination of par 4s and par 3s, the linksstyle layout provided an alternative for golfers who didn’t want to invest the time required to play an 18-hole round, or just wanted to work on their short game, all while enjoying elevated views of Chicago’s North Shore.
Even on a day with hazy skies, the outline of the Willis Tower in downtown Chicago, more than 30 miles
away, is visible. “It feels like [the course] is a mile high because it’s so flat around here,” Knebelkamp said. “We got unobstructed views in every direction.”
Knebelkamp has served as Willow Hill’s manager for more than five years. Before that, he was an engineer, worked in the automotive industry, went back to business school, did a stint in banking and dabbled in residential development.
“And then God threw this at me,” he laughed as he sat in Willow Hill’s clubhouse, while restaurant workers readied tables around him and golfers got an early start to the Fourth of July weekend. “It was the perfect timing in my life.”
Since his arrival on The Hill, Knebelkamp has overseen a plethora of projects on the 205-acre piece of land. And, like the views from every tee box on the golf course, management’s vision has no bounds. Imagination runs wild.
In January 2024, the Willow Hill Dome opened. The facility, 160 yards long and 70 yards wide, towers over Willow Hill’s adjacent golf course. The Dome is used for soccer, lacrosse, the growing sport of flag football, field hockey, baseball, softball and even cricket on Saturday nights.
Just north of the golf course are three new artificial turf soccer fields. Plans are in place to build a par-3 course to the west, near the Willow Road entrance.
Golf architect Greg Martin, who provided preliminary concepts to make improvements on the nine-hole property, helped design the proposed nine-hole par-3 course on the side hill.
“It’s a very short course, but it’s intended to be something unique and fun for just about anybody to play,” Martin said. “It’s a closed landfill, so there are a lot of interesting aspects to that and building on a side
hill. But they did have some land available, and we looked at options and did several different potential routings. There are going to be nine short holes playing uphill, downhill and sidehill.”
Dirt-moving machines and shovels could start digging next spring with a potential opening in 2027. Bring a couple of wedges, maybe a 9 iron, and a putter.
“It’s going to be 50-to-70-yard shots,” Knebelkamp said. “You go out there with two clubs and a putter, and a bunch of friends and just have a blast.”
Sand Valley Golf Resort, a popular destination in central Wisconsin for golf fanatics, has its Sandbox, a 17-hole short course. Likewise, the famous Pinehurst in North Carolina has The Cradle for short-shot fun.
Willow Hill hopes to provide a similar experience.
“It’s a big thing in golf now, these short par 3s,” Knebelkamp said. “You go out and play in an hour and have a couple of drinks with your buddies. It’s challenging. It’s the most important part of the game too, those little chips and putts.”
Martin appreciates Willow Hill’s effort to add to the golf experience.
“They’re pretty creative there,” Martin said. “This was intended to help augment everything that they’re doing.”
While Willow Hill awaits its next move with its par-3 endeavor, the golf course just built a new driving range. Plans were to seed it in early July, with hopes of it opening the first or second week in August to hit balls off mats.
“The old driving range used to face straight west, so after one o’clock in the afternoon you were hitting into the sun,” Knebelkamp said. “It was 275 yards in length, and now it will be about 330 yards long with a hill at the end [where the third tee box rests 20 feet above].”
Willow Hill underwent a renovation after Knebelkamp came aboard.
Spearheaded by Martin, who’s been practicing golf course architecture since 1985 and whose recent works include The Preserve at Oak Meadows and Rich Harvest Links, Willow Hill changed the order of its holes, and that was just the start.
“It speeds up play, and it just flows better,” Knebelkamp said of the rerouting.
Willow Hill also employed Hollembeak Construction to install Better Billy Bunkers , which use the highest quality sand, provide better drainage, and have become the hottest bunkering system in the golf world. The course also added bunkers and tee boxes.
President Jeff Hollembeak said his company installed its first Better Billy Bunkers more than 10 years ago and continues to place them in sand bunkers on some of the top courses in the Chicago area. Rich Harvest Farms has used Hollembeak for all of its golf course construction, and the company has been providing renovations and new construction for almost 40 years.. “[The Better Billy bunkers] prevent washouts in bunkers,” Hollembeak said. “It’s basically a two-inch gravel layer, and we spray a polymer on top of that. It soaks into about three quarters to an inch deep, and that creates a durable, yet porous drainage layer. It allows water to reach the drainline very quickly and greatly reduces washouts during even the heaviest rain events. It is definitely a labor saver.”
The 9-hole Willow Hill course plays to a par 34 or 35 from the tips, while stretching 3,200 yards.
“Our greens have been totally redone in the last two to three years,” Knebelkamp said. “The whole place on either side of the fairway was six feet of cattails, thistle, burs. It was an eyesore with all the weeds. [The winds] were blowing seeds everywhere throughout the community. If you hit a ball five yards off the fairway,
it was gone. … [There were] a bunch of ticks, snakes, frogs. It took us two years to get that all cut down, and basically now it’s almost 99% all grass. It’s beautiful now, and it’s a little bit easier to play.”
Willow Hill also boasts a holiday lights show around Christmas time, and this summer welcomed a restaurant. The Landmark Inn Bar and Grille has long been a staple in downtown Northbrook on Shermer Road and now has dining in the same building as Willow Hill’s clubhouse. A patio surrounds the clubhouse, with a seating capacity of about 150 outside and another 50 inside.
Another short-term project, besides the driving range, is for the gravel parking lot by the clubhouse to be paved with asphalt and landscaped. The end of this year is a target date.
Another long-term project, besides the par-3 course, is a greenhouse for adult disability programs.
“[People with disabilities] can plant and grow flowers and vegetables, harvest, and hopefully sell into the open market,” Knebelkamp said. “That’s really going to be cool. We’re going to make it available to as many of these adult disability programs as we possibly can.”
There are even plans for a concert series. A concrete slab near the clubhouse already is in place to serve as a stage for bands.
“We’ll be like a mini Ravinia,” Knebelkamp said. In the meantime, the golf experience keeps Willow Hill rocking.
The views, from basically any tee box or fairway, are unlike any in northern Illinois. No, it’s not Scotland, or Colorado, or Banff, or heaven, but for anyone who plays golf regularly in Illinois, it promises to take your breath away.
DDenver, Boulder, Vail, Breckenridge, Telluride. They’re among the top iconic locations when the discussion turns to visiting the Rocky Mountain state.
But here’s the thing: Don’t sleep on Colorado Springs.
Located a short 70 miles south of Denver, Colorado Springs is where the majestic peaks of the Rocky Mountains meet the vast expanse of the plains, offering a unique and unforgettable golf experience. Beyond the breathtaking scenery, the region boasts world-class golf and luxurious accommodations that cater to the discerning golfer— all in the shadow of Pikes Peak, the highest summit of the southern Front Range of the Rocky Mountains in North America. The 14,107foot Pikes Peak towers above Pike National Forest, 12 miles west of downtown Colorado Springs,
My recent journey to this mesmerizing destination combined rounds at iconic courses with indulgent stays and exploration of natural wonders, and proved to be the perfect blend of sporting challenge and scenic splendor (not to mention a short jaunt back north to see legendary rocker Sheryl Crow at Red Rocks).
Our golfing adventure began at the legendary Broadmoor Golf Club, host of this year’s U.S. Senior Open. While driving into the meticulously manicured grounds it felt like stepping back in time, the challenge that awaited us on the course was decidedly modern.
Set in the Cheyenne Mountain foothills of Colorado Springs, The Broadmoor Golf Club is consistently ranked among the best in the world, and for good reason. Its two iconic courses have played host to numerous national tournaments, including the U.S. Women’s Open, U.S. Senior Open, and PGA Cup Matches. Presidents, politicians, celebrities, and legendary athletes have all played at The Broadmoor.
The Broadmoor’s East Course was designed by Donald Ross and opened for play in 1918. The course sits on the southern edge of the Rocky Mountains at an elevation of more than 6,400 feet. The East Course is now a combination of holes from Ross’ original layout and holes that were designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. in 1952. The Broadmoor features one other layout, the West Course, and the resort’s landmark hotel, a 784-room facility located on the edge of Cheyenne Lake.
The tournament course—the East, was closed during our stay but for a good reason. It was being readied to host the U.S. Senior Open the following weekend. The East is a true classic, featuring wide fairways, strategically placed bunkers, and subtly undulating greens that demand thoughtful club selection and precise approach shots. The views of Cheyenne Mountain looming in the distance are a constant, awe-inspiring backdrop. The impeccably maintained conditions and attentive service from the Broadmoor’s staff elevated the entire experience.
The Broadmoor has been a Forbes magazine 5-Star property since 1960 and a AAA 5-Diamond Resort since 1976.
Our round on this visit was played on the West Course, known for its dramatic elevation changes and tighter fairways carved through the foothills. This course demanded more strategic play and offered exhilarating downhill tee shots with stunning panoramic vistas. Navigating the natural terrain added an extra layer of excitement to the round. I can honestly say that I’ve never played on better groomed or tougher greens. There was nary a ball mark and not only were the putting surfaces ultra-fast, but each one slopes away from the neighboring mountains, even when your brain tells you it doesn’t.
Staying at The Broadmoor itself is an integral part of this luxurious golf getaway. This iconic resort exudes old-world charm and offers unparalleled amenities. From the opulent rooms with their stunning views to the exceptional dining options, every aspect of the Broadmoor experience is designed for indulgence. overlooking Cheyenne Lake was the perfect way to relax. Mention The Broadmoor to a local Coloradan, and watch as they smile.
Dining at the resort’s Summit Restaurant—one of 19 on property— was a culinary highlight. The elegant ambiance, coupled with a menu featuring innovative dishes and an extensive wine list, provided a sophisticated dining experience that perfectly complemented the resort’s grandeur.
And a visit to the Broadmoor is never complete without stopping into the iconic Golden Bee. This historic English pub is not just a place for drinking, but a social gathering point. A hearty gastropub menu served with famously laid-back British charm welcomes everyone into its convivial and lively embrace where friendships are formed and quite a lot of beer is enjoyed.
The Golden Bee is an authentic 19th century English pub that arrived, panel by panel, at The Broadmoor in 1961. The result is an authentically cozy atmosphere of warm woods and traditional craftsmanship, perfectly recreating the impressive ‘palaces to drink’ that form such a comforting part of people’s lives. You’ll be sure to leave with a parting gift, but that secret can only be obtained with your own personal visit.
The next leg of my golfing journey took me to the Garden of the Gods Resort and Club, another jewel in the Colorado Springs’ crown. The setting here is truly spectacular, with the iconic red rock formations of the Garden of the Gods Park providing a dramatic and unforgettable backdrop to the golf course.
Staying at the Garden of the Gods Resort and Club is like taking a deep breath and diving into instant relaxation. The contemporary design of this boutique resort seamlessly blends with the natural beauty of its surroundings. My room offered stunning views of the red rocks framed by Pikes Peak, while the resort’s amenities, including its spa and wellness center, provided ample opportunities for relaxation and rejuvenation.
Dining at the Grand View Restaurant offered an equally delightful experience. The restaurant’s panoramic views of Garden of the Gods Park were simply breathtaking, and the menu featured locally sourced ingredients prepared with creativity and flair. Dining both indoors as well as al fresco, watching the sunset paint the red rocks in fiery hues while enjoying a delicious meal was an unforgettable experience.
To round out my golfing exploration of Colorado Springs, my wife and I had the pleasure of playing a round at Patty Jewett Golf Course. This historic municipal course, established in 1898, offers a more accessible and local golfing experience. While it may not have the grandeur of the resort courses, Patty Jewett boasts its own charm with its mature trees, well-maintained greens, and friendly atmosphere. The course, the third oldest west of the Mississippi, provided a pleasant contrast to the championship layouts and offered a glimpse into the local golfing community.
Beyond the exceptional golf, Colorado Springs offers a wealth of natural attractions. A visit to The Broadmoor’s Seven Falls is a must. This series of seven cascading waterfalls within a stunning box canyon is a truly awe-inspiring sight. The short hike to the top offers breathtaking views of the falls and the surrounding landscape.
Of course, no trip to Colorado Springs is complete without exploring the Garden of the Gods Park. Hiking or biking through this natural wonder, surrounded by towering red rock formations, is an unforgettable experience. The sheer scale and beauty of the park are truly captivating, and it’s easy to see why it’s a designated National Natural Landmark.
A golf and sightseeing adventure in Colorado Springs will leave you breathless; a trip of a lifetime, and all just a short plane ride from Chicago. Daily direct flights to/from Colorado Springs is perfect and

much easier and less stressful than flying into Denver International, which is 90 minutes to the north and also an option.
The combination of world-class golf courses, luxurious accommodations at The Broadmoor and Garden of the Gods Resort, exceptional dining, and the breathtaking natural beauty of the region created a truly memorable experience. Whether you are a seasoned golfer seeking a challenging round with stunning views or simply a traveler looking for a destination that blends outdoor adventure with refined indulgence, Colorado Springs is a hole-in-one.

Architect Todd Clark Has Great Designs on Golf Courses Across the Midwest
by neal Kotlarek
As it turns out, golf course architects have a lot in common with NFL football coaches. While one might think that golf course design is a polar opposite business model from the management of football players, the fact is that both sports share a common lineage. That is to say, most golf course architects and most football coaches learn, grow and flourish from an extended family tree. The 49ers’ legendary coach Bill Walsh begot the likes of Jon Gruden, Mike Holmgren, Ray Rhodes and Marc Trestman. Trace the coaching turnstile of the Miami Dolphins’ Don Shula, and you can uncover nearly 25% of all active NFL coaches.
In a fascinating parallel, legendary golf architect Pete Dye not only worked alongside sons Perry and P.B. Dye, he also mentored the likes of Tom Doak, Bill Coore, Ben Crenshaw, Bobby Weed and Libertyville’s Rick Jacobson. Besides his dazzlingly successful sons—Rees and Robert, Jr.—Robert Trent Jones, Sr. designed or redesigned over 500 courses in his career. Along the way, his associates included the likes of Bruce Charlton, Roger Rulewich and Bill Boswell.
Throughout the extent of his 40+ years of designing courses, Long Grove-based architect Dick Nugent encouraged and worked with a long list of renowned talents, including Bob Lohman, Jim Engh and Jeff Brauer. Many of the firm’s properties that spanned across 12 states are familiar to Chicagoans, including Kemper Lakes, Big Run, the Dunes Club and Foxford Hills. Nugent died in 2018 at the age of 86.
Todd Clark, ASGCA, served as lead project architect for Nugent’s firm between 1991 and 1994, one of the company’s most prolific and celebrated periods. Clark is today founder and principal architect of Kansas City-based CE Golf Design. He recalls his work with Nugent with great fondness. “Dick was an amazing talent, family man and a great person,” said Clark in a June interview. “I started with him as an intern in 1990 and he liked what I did enough to hire me full-time a year later.
“Over the span of his career, which stretched over 40 years, Dick and his associates worked on over 60 projects across the Midwest and Hawaii. The firm’s reputation really grew with some designs at great properties, including Royal Fox Country Club in St. Charles, Bull Valley Country Club in Woodstock, and Aldeen Golf Club in Rockford.”
One of the celebrated projects the firm worked on during Clark’s tenure was Harborside International Golf Center on the city’s south side. The project is a true architectural marvel, as two courses were built upon two distinct landfill areas that took up 500 acres. The property used for the Port Course needed to be permanently sealed before greens, bunkers and fairways could be constructed. “One day, we were thinking of ways to create a signature hole on the Port Course,” said Clark. “Dick challenged me to design a signature hole for a par 3 which became the fifteenth hole on the Port Course with a unique bunker in front of the green that would emulate the property’s logo. The massive green was designed so you could putt around the top of the anchor which would wow golfers and would make that hole particularly challenging.” And, just like that, the famous “anchor bunker” was born. Today, 30 years after the course’s opening in 1995, the hole continues to be the talk of the Harborside clubhouse.

Clark was also involved in the design of Green Bay Country Club in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and The Fortress Golf Course in Frankenmuth, Michigan, while working for Dick Nugent. Clark transitioned from Nugent’s company to become project architect at Craig Scheiner Golf Course Architects for nine years. In 2003, he established his own design firm to orchestrate the design of public, private and resort courses across the United States. With 35 years of experience and dozens of projects under his belt, Clark has been recognized for creating and renovating courses that pay tribute to the natural attributes of the land being worked on, while meeting the timeline and budgetary goals of his clients.
Clark has notched a highly-regarded reputation throughout the central United States with his award winning designs on several renovation projects. In 2006, Clark’s renovation of Lawrence Country Club in Kansas was nominated by Golf Digest as one of the top five renovated courses in the Midwest.
Clark followed his work at Lawrence CC with a major renovation at Wolf Creek in Olathe, Kansas. These two major renovations opened the door for more opportunities throughout the midwest, with projects at Milburn CC, Indian Hills CC, and Canyon Farms CC in the Kansas City metro area. Clark expanded into Texas with the renovation of The Lakes Course at Indian Creek Golf Club in Carrollton, Texas. His work reached Minneapolis with renovations

at Mendakota CC and Island View GC.
CE Golf Design expanded their footprint across Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska with recent work at Buffalo Dunes GC, Topeka CC, Mules National, Osage National and The Field Club of Omaha. Clark teamed with Ron Whitten for a recent renovation at Oakwood Country Club on their championship course which earned the prestigious title of #3 Best Transformation by Golf Digest in 2023, and a new par-3 course which opened in 2024.
Clark and his partner in CE Golf Design Brent Hugo have teamed with Ron Whitten for a sympathetic renovation of A.W. Tillinghast’s Swope Memorial Golf Course in Kansas City, Missouri. The $9 million renovation is currently under construction with the intent of restoring the characteristics of Tillinghast to the golf course. A renovation project took place in 1990 which lost some of the character of the course which made it special. Clark said “ It is an honor to work on this special project of restoring an A.W. Tillinghast course with the entire design, ownership and construction team.” The golf course will re-open in May 2026.
Clark’s newest project in Kansas appears destined to become one of the breakout elite golf resorts of the 2020s. Located a few minutes away from Prairie Dunes in Hutchinson, the future Salt Lick Golf & Hunting Resort will be in the natural sand dunes found in the central part of Kansas. Known for his exceptional playing career alongside his highly successful coaching tenure, Small’s continued dominance in senior events further solidifies his reputation as one of the most decorated and respected figures in Illinois golf.
Wessel Captures First Career IPGA Senior Championship Title, Punching Ticket to 2025 National Championship
Sunset Ridge Country Club’s Brandon Wessel clinched his first career Nadler Golf Cars Illinois PGA Professional Championship title July 1, at The Grove Country Club in Long Grove. Wessel’s
victory not only marks a personal milestone but also secures his spot among the eight Illinois PGA qualifiers for the 2025 National Senior PGA Professional Championship, scheduled for October 23–26 at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida. His
performance over the two-day event showcased his dedication and skill, culminating in a well-deserved championship win.
In addition to crowning the Illinois PGA Senior Champion, the championship also served as a qualifier for the 2025 National Senior PGA Professional Championship. The Illinois PGA was awarded eight qualifying spots into the national event, giving competitors an opportunity to advance to one of the most celebrated stages in senior professional golf.
Joining Wessel at the 2025 National Senior PGA Professional Championship will be an accomplished group of Illinois PGA Professionals who earned their spots through stellar play at The Grove Country Club. Roy Biancalana of The Hawk Country Club delivered the low round of the final day with an impressive 6-under-par 66 to secure his qualification. John Deere Classic Surpasses $200 Million in Charitable Giving
Brian Campbell was not the only winner of the 2025 John Deere Classic in early July. As it turned out, the event marked a philanthropic milestone as the tournament’s Birdies For Charity program has now exceeded $200 million in donations to local and regional charities since 1971. Just a few of the recipient organizations receiving this support include the Salvation Army of the Quad Cities, Big Brothers and Big Sisters of the Mississippi Valley, the Alzheimer’s Association ,and local American Legion posts.
“Reaching $200 million is more than just a number—it’s a powerful reminder of what we can accomplish together,” said Andrew Lehman, Tournament Director of the John Deere Classic. “This milestone reflects the incredible generosity of our community and the lasting impact the tournament has had on our region. We couldn’t have done it without the unwavering support of John Deere, our sponsors, volunteers, and fans, whose commitment continues to drive our mission forward.”
Over 3,000 volunteers support the John Deere Classic, whose winners over the years have included the likes of Jordan Spieth, Steve Stricker, and Zach Johnson.

The Illinois Golf Hall of Fame will soon induct six members who represent a diverse and influential cross-section of golf achievement in Illinois. The inductees will be honored at an official ceremony October 17th at The Glen Club in Glenview, home of the Illinois Golf Hall of Fame.
“This 21st class of the Illinois Golf Hall of Fame is especially distinguished and unique,” said Selection Committee Chair Tim Cronin. “We have a pair of fine Tour players in David Ogrin and Bob Zender, a renaissance man of the early 20th century in Joe Roseman, an extraordinary superintendent of the turf in Dan Dinelli, an executive who takes pains to give back to golf in Steve Skinner, and a pioneer in breaking golf’s color barrier in Horace McDougal, whose story was lost in the dust of history for too long.”
Dan Dinelli One of the nation’s leading turfgrass experts, Dinelli has been superintendent at North Shore Country Club for 36 years and a national voice in Phytobiome research, soil health, and sustainable agronomy. A third-genera -

tion superintendent, his career has been defined by innovation, stewardship, and leadership in golf course management.
Horace McDougal A Chicago native and pioneer for racial integration in golf, McDougal became the first Black golfer at Northwestern University in 1923 and played in the first Negro National Open in 1926. A powerful advocate through his writing in the Chicago Defender, he also co-founded the Windy City Golf Association and fought lifelong discrimination in the game he loved.
David Ogrin A standout from Waukegan, Ogrin won both the Illinois Amateur and Illinois Open in 1980 before embarking on a long PGA Tour career that included 32 top-10 finishes and a victory at the 1996 Texas Open. He tied for 10th at the 1997 U.S. Open and remains one of the most successful Illinois-born Tour professionals.
Joe Roseman An inventive force in early American golf, Roseman’s contributions
spanned design, course construction, and equipment. He developed the roller-drive mower, introduced modern fairway irrigation, designed courses across the Chicago area, and built the first lighted par-3 course in the 1930s.
Steve Skinner As CEO of KemperSports, Skinner has played a pivotal role in shaping modern facility management, with a portfolio that includes Bandon Dunes, Sand Valley, and Streamsong. A founder of The First Tee of Greater Chicago, Skinner’s leadership has extended into philanthropy, youth development, and national event operations.
Bob Zender After being a three-time Illinois Amateur champion and Purdue AllAmerican, Zender turned professional and quickly won the 1971 PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament. He went on to a decade-long Tour career, and won three consecutive Illinois PGA Championships, tying him for the most in state history. His 62 at Ridgemoor Golf Club still stands alongside Ben Hogan’s as the course record.

laid out over 620 acres on property which formerly served as home to a Nick Faldo-designed course. In 2022, a wildfire ravaged all of the trees on the property that defined the original course. Clark and Hugo will work with Ron Whitten (co-designer of Erin Hills and renowned writer for Golf Digest) on the project. When completed, the public resort will incorporate lodging, a two-acre putting course, clubhouse and lodging. Clark said “Now that we have cleared the site we will start building holes in 2026 and 2027 with a grand opening in 2028. Even though the property is located in central Kansas, Hutchinson is only 45 minutes away from the Wichita Airport. So golfers won’t need to rent vans and drive hours and hours away to play. That’s not the case at a lot of other golf destination properties.”
While Clark’s work takes him across much of the Midwest, he takes great pride in returning regularly to the Chicagoland area where he continues to find dynamic projects. The New Lenox Community Park District hired him to re-imagine an existing basic driving range into a 20-bay facility including Toptracer technology, which was completed at the beginning of 2024.
In Michigan City, Clark has been working at Long Beach CC since 2008. “During my first visit to Long Beach I discovered a golf course that was covered up with trees and woody undergrowth. Over the past 17 years we have been working to reclaim the natural sand dunes by removing trees and establishing fine fescue on the dunes. We have rebuilt three greens, all of the sand bunkers and tees. All of the people associated with the club have been tremendous to work with, and we still have more work to do in the coming years,” Clark said.
During his visits to Long Beach, Clark started working with the City of LaPorte on a renovation master plan for Beechwood Golf Course, designed by William Diddle in the 1930s. The intent of the master plan is to build three new golf holes on land donated to the city by the Fox family— the same family who donated the original course to the city decades ago. The three golf holes being eliminated will create space for a new practice facility adjacent to the clubhouse. Clark said, “The city is working with a residential developer for new homes on the property adjacent to the new golf holes. Hopefully, we can start construc-

tion activities soon so golfers can enjoy these new course improvements.”
As Clark reflects on his career, he takes his greatest pride in the fact that his work spans the entire spectrum of private and public golf courses, while always adhering to the principles of natural course design. “I think that one of the great arts of golf design is to build golf holes and golf courses that harmonize with the natural environment surrounding the property,” Clark said. “On any project I’ve worked on, whether with Dick Nugent or Ron Whitten, my goal is to create a golf course that blends in with natural site elements and topography. It is the right thing to do for the owners or members that we have worked for over the years. I want to honor the site with golf holes that look as if they were designed as much by nature as by man. As I look back on my first years as an architect working around the Chicago area,” Clark said, “I’m pleased to say that all these decades later I’ve continued to adhere to those aspirations.”

Texas isn’t the first place that comes to mind when most people think about wine, especially “serious” high-quality wine. And yet, Texas is fifth in the nation in both wine production and consumption. The history of grape growing in the state goes back at least to the 1660s, when Franciscan monks planted Mission grapes adjacent to their missions. Today, Texas is home to a number of American Viticultural Areas, or AVAs; the two most prominent are the Texas High Plains AVA around Lubbock in northwestern Texas, and the Texas Hill Country AVA in central Texas west of Austin
In his 20s, Texas native Randy Hester left a frustrating career in Psychology and adolescent mental health, and began to search for his next path in life. His first real exposure to the world of wine came during his years in restaurant management, where he discovered he had a naturally talented palate. Hester eventually moved into wine sales and distribution where he became intrigued with winemaking, and eventually felt compelled to create his own.
In 2006, at the age of 36, he and his wife Brooke headed to Napa Valley. Serendipitously, Brook secured the position of CFO at Patz and Hall, famous for vineyard-designated Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs. In short order, James Hall became Randy’s mentor, beginning the Hester’s 11-year sojourn in Napa, years that included stints at Cakebread Cellars, Colgin Cellars, Caldwell Vineyard, Realm Cellars, and Marciano Estate as well. Hester made the most of his time there, working the fields and wineries, talking to winemakers and growers, and touring vineyards, all while taking night classes at UC Davis and Napa College.
But the Hesters, both meticulous planners, always intended to return to Texas, which they did in 2017, founding the C.L. Butaud Winery in Austin. Rather than name the winery after himself, as is so often the case, C.L. Butaud [byu-tow] is an homage to Hester’s great grandfather, known as Frenchy, who exerted an early and positive influence on him as a boy.
At the very beginning, the Hesters made a conscious decision not to farm,

so Butaud has no vineyards of its own, aka estate vines. Instead, Hester utilizes 100 percent Texas-grown grapes from a network of trusted growers in the High Plains AVA. This allows him maximum flexibility to select fruit best suited to his philosophy of a clean approach to natural winemaking. He is both minimalist and experimental, while at the same time paying respect to the traditions of winemaking, and relies on his artistic instincts as well as the empirical data of fermentation science he has amassed.
Although a winery of his own is due in the near future, Hester currently works on a Custom Crush business model. This is the idea of making wine in a facility with equipment and resources provided by the facility management team. It can be a great way to make wine without the overhead and capital investment of a dedicated winery.
Determined to produce wines to be taken seriously, Hester has avoided all of the Texas/cowboy/yee-haw clichés in the packaging and marketing of his products.
As of this writing, C.L. Butaud is producing 13 different wines from seven different vineyard sites, and crushes 80 tons of Texas fruit.
C.L. Butaud Cease & Desist Red Wine Blend 2021
Cease & Desist is an unusual name for a wine, is it not? It comes from a trademark infringement squabble that Hester was involved in. It centered on his first label, Lightning Wines, which he made while still in California. A litigious Napa producer felt aggrieved and sued over the use of the name, demanding that Hester cease and desist. But, Hester prevailed in the lawsuit, and was able to keep Lightning Wines as the business and label name. To commemorate this legal dustup, Hester decided to call the proprietary red blend a fanciful name, Cease & Desist, which he continues to use under the C.L. Butaud wine label.

less steel barrels. There was a further five months of aging in barrel, and six months in bottle before release. In the glass the wine is a medium dark red with just a wisp of brick. The nose displays raspberry and blueberry aromas. These continue of the palate, plus a hint of graphite and clove, all supported by bracing tannins and good acidity. It all wraps up in a velvety finish. A serious wine from Texas. Who knew? 367 cases produced. ABV is 14.2%.
