New Zealand is one of the first places in the world to see the new day, 12 hours ahead of GMT (Greenwich Mean Time). In Summer, New Zealand uses ‘Daylight Saving’, with clocks put forward one hour to GMT +13. Daylight saving begins on the last Sunday in September and ends on the first Sunday of the following April, when clocks are put back to GMT+12.

Currency: 5, 10, 20, 50 cents, 1 & 2 dollar coins. 5, 10, 20, 50 & 100 dollar notes. Credit Cards: Visa and Mastercard are accepted at most places, Amex & Diners Club in some places.

Weather New Zealand has a temperate climate with moderately high rainfall and many hours of sunshine. While the far north has subtropical weather during summer, and inland alpine areas of the South Island can be as cold as -10°C (14°F) in winter, most of the country lies close to the coast, which means mild temperatures. The average New Zealand temperature decreases as you travel south. January and February are the warmest months, and July is the coldest month of the year. In summer, the average maximum temperature ranges between 20-30ºC (70-90°F) and in winter between 10-15ºC (50-60°F).

Did You Know Rangitoto is the youngest and largest of Auckland’s 48 volcanic cones, and is home to the world’s largest pohutukawa forest. 5.

You can play, walk, run, swim, climb, ride or picnic, get up close and personal with animals and even sit still and watch the world go by. We’re blessed with choices and here are a few of our favourite parks… Auckland Rainforest Auckland is one of the only places outside the tropics where rainforest exists. The rainforest of the Waitakere Ranges is an ecological masterpiece situated only 24 km west of the CBD. It has 250 km of walking trails that take you through native tress to streams, waterfalls and rugged beaches. Some trees are 600 years old!

Play/Party Barry Curtis Wetland Playground – Flatbush An unusual playground in the traditional sense, it has two birds’ keeps 3m off the ground accessed by ladders! Well worth a look! Snakes & Ladders – Farm Cove Next door to Pakuranga Sailing Club, it is a giant snakes and ladders game set into a hill. Spin the dice at the bottom and climb up the stepping stones. If you land on a ladder, climb up - if you land on a “snake”, (which is a wiggly slide), you slide down. A great twist on an old favourite.

Rainbows End is the iconic theme park, that has something for everyone. Easily accessed by freeway or public transport, there are scream rides for the thrill seekers and dedicated areas for the toddlers. They even have night activities now! Schnapper Rock – Albany The best thing about this is the water play equipment. Children get to use a hand pump to activate the water sequence down the manmade creek bed. Something different! Heron Park – Avondale Spacenet, flying fox, swings, slides all on soft fall rubber – Great fun! Wynyard Quarter – CBD Down by the wharf area, this new playground is themed around the sea and it will capture the kids imagination. It’s close by to cafes too, so you can grab that latte whilst the kids play!

Play/Party Beaches – Aaah – This is what I’m talkin’ about bro!! Auckland and the North Island have some of the most pristine, white (and black) sand ocean strips anywhere in the world. The entire City of Auckland is surrounded by beaches, and add to that the nearby islands, and you have plenty of choice to frolic down by the sea. (The water can be a bit chilly though!). Mission Bay Close to the CBD and with the convenience of shops, cafes and restaurants nearby. This is perfect when the kids just have to get their feet wet! Takapuna A long wide beach that is bordered by grassy areas with all the amenities. Go for a walk, have a game of cricket or touch - this has room for everyone. Parking is a bit scarce. Piha Beach This is one of Auckland’s famous BLACK sand beaches. Located in the Waitakere Ranges, it is a popular swimming beach. The scenery is awesome. Cornwallis Beach In the same area as Piha, Cornwallis is a safe swimming spot for families. Great picnic spot. Waiheke Island Waiheke has some great beach spots, and all are relatively quiet. For families try Little Oneroa, which offers safe sheltered swimming and is close by to shops. Palm Beach has clam waters, a playground (when beach boredom sets in) and has shops nearby. To the south of the island, Whakanewha Bay offers picnic areas and safe, shallow swimming.

Visit - Hamilton Just south of Auckland lies the Waikato region; a land of lush pastures and fertile soils with Hamilton at its centre. It is New Zealand’s largest inland city, situated on the banks of the Waikato River, the country’s longest river at 425km. The city of Hamilton itself is flat and easily accessible on foot. There are many walking trails beside the river and the well laid out and manicured lawns and gardens are a feature. Whilst in town visit the Zoo (see below), the Botanic Gardens and the well regarded Waikato Museum that has special children’s galleries and events (www.waikatomuseum.org.nz). Mount Maunganui, a short distance from Tauranga, has spectacular beaches which are a magnet for surfers all year round.

Mt Maunganui & Tauranga

Tauranga is the main centre of the Bay of Plenty region and is one of the fastest growing cities in the country. Located at the entrance to one of the largest natural harbours in New Zealand and situated beside the magnificent Mauao (Mount Manganui). The harbour hosts many cruise ship visits each summer and is popular with windsurfers, jet skiers and all those who love water activities. Two large marinas hold over 1000 yachts . Downtown Tauranga has several historically significant areas to view during a scenic walk around the area. The Strand waterfront area has undergone a major redevelopment in the past few years, and the changes include a children’s play area with water feature, seating areas and cultural artwork. “The Mount” is the colloquial name for Mount Maunganui, a beach town that occupies a peninsula at the southern end of Tauranga Harbour. The peninsula is actually a huge sandbar, with a sheltered bay on the inner harbour side and a magnificent surf beach on the ocean side. You can’t take a trip to The Mount without taking advantage of its no.1 natural attraction - Head up the Mount for amazing views . With an average walking time of about 30-45 minutes to the top – why not take a picnic? They even have benches too!

Mount Maunganui is one of those places that is just perfect for families. On the ocean side is the famous Mount Maunganui surf beach. This stretch of stunning beach hosts everything from surf-lifesaving events to beach volleyball and sand castle building. The beach is patrolled by Surf Lifeguards during the busy summer months. Ocean Beach extends to Papamoa to the south and offers more beautiful rolling waves and miles of golden sand beach. The beach is accessible from many points along the costal main road, and unlike similar beaches around the world, you will always find a large stretch of sand to spread out and spend the day.

Situated at the base of Mauao are the Mt Maunganui Hot Salt Water Pools, the country’s only geothermally-heated hot salt water pools. The complex features several spa pools,

two larger pools plus a children’s play area. On the opposite side of Mauao is the sheltered harbourside of Pilot Bay, which is a launching pad for boats and kayaks. It’s also a shallow swimming spot ideal for families with young children.

Visit - Rotorua

Rotorua is perhaps most famous though for three things – its geothermal activity, its adventure activities and for being the heartland of the Maori culture. The smell of sulphur in the air is the first sign that you’ve arrivec in Rotorua. The second is the wisps of steam that you notice escaping out of vents, grates and holes in the ground virtually everywhere. Don’t worry – you soon get used to the smell!!!

Did You Know

Rotorua is part of the Volcanic Zone, a geothermal field that extends from White Island through to Mt Ruapehu on the south side of Taupo. It provides erupting geysers, bubbling mud pools and naturally heated mineral waters that are said to have great healing properties. Spa baths are everywhere and the Polynesian Spa and Blue Baths have family heated pools. The beautiful Government Gardens are a mixture of Maori and English culture that contain the Rotorua Museum which tells the history of the area, and they cater for kids (voucher opposite).

THE ERUPTION OF MT TARAWERA In the early hours of the morning of June 10 1886, the Tarawera range was erupting. At 12:30am the first earthquakes were felt. People throughout the area were jolted awake as earthquakes became increasingly powerful. By 2.30am its three peaks were erupting, with columns reaching thousands of metres into the sky. Destructive, hurricane force winds developed as the eruption columns sucked in air from the surrounding countryside. Violent electrical storms above the eruption columns blasted into the night sky, with water vapours poured out by

the eruption causing torrential rains. The final length of the craters was a massive 16-km long. The death toll is not known exactly but some 150 people are believed to have died that night. For the surviving local Maori, the eruption was devastating. Their ancestors' remains were destroyed, many of their people were killed and their lands and livelihood were metres deep in mud and ash. In addition, the amazing Pink and White Terraces - recognised as the eighth wonder of the world - were completely destroyed.

Whakatane -

Visit

Located approximately 90 kms from both Tauranga and Rotorua, Whakatane forms the third point of the Bay of Plenty triangle.

Photo courtesy of White Island Tours

It is an attractive coastal town that is situated on the banks of the Whakatane River and it is the jumping off point for the spectacular White Island! This always active volcano is 49 km off the shores of Whakatane, but is well worth the visit. In fact we think it is one of the world’s great adventures! White Island is a perfect example of an active volcano.

White Island

Fast Fact More yellow fin tuna are caught here than anywhere else in NZ It breathes, roars and hisses from steaming vents that release 800C gases. It’s wild! The island is roughly circular, about 2km in diameter and rises to a height of 321m above sea level. However, what you are seeing is only the peak of a much larger submerged mountain. It has had 35 small to medium eruptions since 1826. You can take a guided tour with PeeJay White Island Tours and get up close and personal with the steaming vents and the green sulphur lakes.

Taupo -

Visit

Photo courtesy of Tourism New Zealand

Taupo sits at the edge of the largest lake in Australasia. Almost everywhere you look there is a volcano and Mt Ruapehu is always standing guard in the distance.

Huka Falls The lake discharges into the mighty Waikato River and the river flows over one of NZ’s most spectacular waterfalls, Huka Falls, which is just a short distance out of town and definitely worth a look. It is NZ’s most visited natural attraction and 222000 litres of water pour over it per second!!

Did You Know

It was created nearly two thousand years ago by a volcanic eruption so big it darkened the skies in Europe and China.

Taupo is a centre of geothermal activity and hot springs suitable for bathing abound. DeBretts (see opposite) is an awesome spot for families! Skiing and other outdoor pursuits are another reason to come to the area, and the Taupo town centre is crammed full of pubs, cafes and interesting shops. The area has a load of accommodations to suit all budgets.

Whatever your pace, you’ll find Taupo has something to interest everyone!
