Perth is on Western Standard Time (WST), as is the whole of WA. It is in the same time zone as Singapore! Adelaide and Darwin are one and a half hours ahead of Perth, Melbourne, Sydney, Hobart, Brisbane and Canberra are all two hours ahead of Perth. Daylight saving is not observed in Queensland, the Northern Territory or Western Australia. Daylight Saving Time begins at 2am on the first Sunday in October, when clocks are put forward one hour. It ends at 2am (which is 3am Daylight Saving Time) on the first Sunday in April, when clocks are put back one hour. This means WA moves an extra hour behind the other states who observe it during this time.

Out & About

- Perth City

Don’t know what to do with the family on the weekend or holidays? You’ve come to the right place! For a day, a weekend, a week – in and around Perth, there are hundreds of things to do. Perth is an awesome place at any time of the year, with sooo many options to keep the family entertained. In the city...by the beach...on the river...in the hills... or at the park-check (p.48) for a few ideas in the suburbs near you. There is something for everyone! A little further out, the main country areas are all serviced by excellent freeways, and a day trip (or weekend) is just an easy drive away.

Perth’s superb position on the banks of the Swan River and nearby hectares of natural bushland in Kings Park make for a city centred on the great outdoors and perfect for sightseeing. So let’s get started! Lace up the shoes, turn to the CAT map on (p.6), work out where you are closest to and hop on the nearest CAT bus! They’re FREE!! The city provides these hop on hop off style tourist buses that pass by all the CBD points of interest and attractions.

It’s world-class Gold Exhibition brings the history of Western Australian gold and The Perth Mint to life. Multimedia displays, aged artefacts and historic imagery form the backdrop to a wealth of pure gold exhibits. Visitors will learn of the gold mining legends and events that have shaped the state as well as those which continue to contribute to its prosperity.

Visitors can also view Australia’s most dazzling display of natural gold nuggets, including the second largest natural nugget in existence; watch molten gold being poured to form a gleaming solid bar in the original 1899 melting house; handle a real gold bar; and much more! Kings Park is one of the largest inner city parks in the world, and boasts magnificent views of the city and the neighbouring Swan River. You can play in the footprints of dinosaurs at May Drive Parkland, connect with nature at the Rio Tinto Naturescape (which offers many hours of outdoor play,) walk among the treetops on the Lotterywest Federation Walkway or reflect at the State War Memorial.

The perfect way to spend an afternoon in the city, Elizabeth Quay is the epitome of family-friendly fun in Perth. Head to the Islands Playground, cool off in the BHP Billiton Water Park and eat and drink to your heart’s content. Take it up a notch with a trip out onto the Swan River on a boat or a waterbike or a street art tour through the CBD to see some of the city’s most well-known colourful murals. You cannot miss the modern glass sculpture that pierces the sky above the Elizabeth Quay precinct – an 82.5-metre tall tower that houses the Swan Bells, which comprise 18 bells sourced from historic churches in London. The Bell Tower contains an observation deck that enjoys peerless bird’s eye views over the Swan River and the city. The Bell Tower is one of the largest musical instruments on earth and was custom built to house the historically significant bells of Saint Martin-in-the-Fields Church, the parish church of Buckingham Palace in Trafalgar Square, London. These bells date back to before the 14th century! Set over 41 acres, Perth Zoo is one of the oldest in the country and is the home to a multitude of 164 exotic and native species of animals from all over the world. It is accessible by ferry from Elizabeth Quay in the CBD.

Swan Valley

One of our favourite attractions in Whiteman Park is the Bennett Brook Railway. The vintage trains of the railway are operated by volunteers and run on selected days of the week only. Take a ride around the bushland and, if you are lucky, you may even be able to spot wild kangaroos hopping by.

There’s also a splash pool and plenty of walking and cycling paths.

DID YOU KNOW The town of Guildford is considered so important to the country’s colonial past that the entire town is registered by the National Trust of Australia!

- Swan Valley No trip to the Swan Valley is complete without food, so why not pack a picnic lunch and visit one of the many scenic river bank parks or eat at one of the many child friendly cafes. There are also countless roadside stalls packed with fresh seasonal produce picked straight from the backyard, like plump figs, sweet melons, juicy strawberries, flavoursome asparagus and vine-ripened tomatoes.

Families can also see farm animals at the Swan Valley Cuddly Animal Farm (p.25) or play a round of mini or supa golf at Oasis Supagolf (p.25). Supa Golf is a slightly different version of the traditional golf game, which is easier and is more fun to play because the ball is oversized and softer. To slow the pace down a little bit, you can go on a horse-drawn wagon ride around the valley.

HANDY HINT The Swan Valley Visitor Centre offers two fun activities for families - The Great Valley Rally and Amazing Valley Chase. Similar to a treasure hunt, participants follow cryptic clues to help find their way along a specific route through the valley. The rallies can be done any day of the year and families are presented with certificates and prizes at the finish line.

Swan Valley

Outback Splash (p.25) in Bullsbrook, offers Australia’s largest water slide playground. The region is also full of wineries and farms that you can pop into. You can easily spend a half-day or more visiting the many places that you come across as you drive around the region.

Rottnest Island -

Out & About

“Rotto” as the locals call it, only a 25 minute ferry ride from the mainland, is an uniquely wonderful place to escape to for the day, the weekend or the week. The island is about as relaxing as it can get! A trip to Rottnest is a time to slow down and relax completely with not a care in the world. It’s also the perfect opportunity to get lots of fresh air and exercise. There are no cars on the island, so bikes are the main method of transportation. The lack of cars on Rottnest has a huge effect on your sense of freedom and relaxation - way more than you’d probably realise. Photo Courtesy of Tourism WA

You can wander wherever you want all over the road, or even set up a game of cricket right in the middle of it! Kids get to experience a level of freedom unknown to them in their everyday life.

On Rottnest they can roam around on foot or by bicycle to their hearts content - climbing trees and making new friends.

The island is only 11kms long and 4.5kms wide, making it easy to explore with a number of great trails to follow. Hire a bike (or bring your own) and check out some of the historic sites - ride out through the salt lakes to Oliver Hill, which has great views and guns and tunnels from WW2. Visit Wadjemup Lighthouse and take the tour where you can climb to the top.

With a choice of over 63 pristine beaches and 20 secluded bays, it’s not hard to discover a secluded beach to enjoy all by yourself! The warm Leeuwin Current that runs through Rottnest means you’ll find green turtles and 135 species of tropical fish, from migratory tuna and marlin to multi coloured moon wrasse. Snorkel through vibrant coral reefs protected by marine sanctuary zones, dive among shipwrecks, fish for delicious local seafood or surf some of Western Australia’s best breaks. Of course one of Rotto’s major drawcards is the resident population of quokkas. Dutch settlers originally mistook these friendly, furry creatures to be “rats” and that is how the island got its name- “rats nest”. The cute creatures wander the island and are extremely friendly, and are always up for a selfie!!

Rottnest Island

Scenic joy rides of the Island can also be enjoyed by air, eco boat or a hop-on, hop-off bus service that tours the perimeter of the Island.

Not surprisingly, water activities play a major role in island life - from snorkelling and diving to fishing, surfing, boating, kayaking, sailing and swimming!
