A Decade of Wellness Tourism:
First-ever Compilation Of 10+ Years Of Market Data
4 By Global Wellness Institute
Les Nouvelles Esthetiques no’105
In 2013, the Global Wellness Institute (GWI) introduced the Global Wellness Tourism Economy report — a pivotal study that delineated the parameters and characteristics of the burgeoning wellness tourism sector, providing, for the first time, market size estimates at global, regional, and country levels. In that inaugural report, GWI initially measured wellness tourism at $439 billion in 2012. Since then, especially in the aftermath of the pandemic, wellness has emerged as a major force in the global tourism market. Following the release of that first wellness tourism report, GWI has periodically updated wellness tourism figures in our flagship report, the Global Wellness Economy Monitor.
For this feature, GWI’s researchers have meticulously compiled all historical data on the global wellness tourism sector, offering a first-ever snapshot of our full time-series dataset from 2012 to 2022, along with projections extending to 2027.
Consistent Growth Trajectory of Wellness Tourism:
Wellness tourism has consistently emerged as one of the fastest-growing sectors within the wellness economy. It was among the fastest-growing segments before 2020. From 2012 to 2019, the global number of wellness tourism trips grew by 8.6% annually, reaching a peak of 936.4 million trips globally in 2019. Concurrently, expenditures on wellness tourism grew by 7.3% annually during this period, peaking at $720.4 billion in 2019. After a major downturn in 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the wellness tourism sector gradually recovered in 2021 and 2022, along with the relaxation of pandemic-related travel restrictions and the recovery of the overall tourism market.
From 2020 to 2022, wellness trips have grown by 30.2% annually, with expenditures growing by 36.2% annually. The global wellness tourism market is projected to fully recover to—and exceed—its prepandemic level as of 2023, with projected annual growth rates of 14.7% for wellness trips and 16.6% for wellness trip expenditures through 2027.
Outperformance of Wellness Tourism Against Overall Tourism Industry:
Wellness tourism has consistently outperformed the overall tourism industry for over a decade. As evident in the chart below, wellness tourism expenditures have grown faster than overall global tourism expenditures every year since 2012. Before the pandemic, wellness tourism was growing at an average annual rate of 7.3% from 2012 to 2019— a rate 25% higher than the growth trend for tourism in general. In the first year of the pandemic (20192020), wellness tourism fared slightly better than overall tourism, with wellness tourism spending falling by 51.3%, while overall tourism spending fell by 55.1%.
Since then, wellness tourism has resumed a rapid growth trajectory as it recovers from the 2020 downturn, growing at a pace that is 27% faster than the overall tourism growth rate from 2020 to 2022. Forecasting forward to the next five years, wellness tourism expenditures are projected to maintain a strong growth trajectory, well above that for the overall tourism sector.
spa therapies
Expansion of Wellness Tourism's Share of the Overall Tourism Market:
In 2012, GWI estimated that wellness travelers took 524.4 million trips (both internationally and domestically), representing 5.8% of all tourism trips taken around the world that year. With wellness tourism growing faster than overall tourism for more than a decade, its share of the overall tourism market has also expanded. In 2022, the 819.4 billion wellness trips taken (both internationally and domestically) represented 7.8% of all tourism trips— a significantly larger share of the market than just a decade earlier. Wellness trips are projected to rise to 8.3% of all tourism trips by 2027.
Higher Spending by Wellness Tourists:
Wellness tourists consistently spend more money than the average tourist, although the premiums for different types of wellness tourists have shifted over time. Wellness tourism is high-yield tourism, with wellness travelers increasingly targeted by destinations worldwide because they spend more per trip than the average tourist, whether domestic or international. In 2022, international wellness tourists on average spent $1,764 per trip, which is 41% more than the typical international tourist. The spending premium for domestic wellness tourists was even higher, at 175% more than the typical domestic tourist (or $668 per trip).
Analysis of Spending Premium Trends:
Looking at the time-series data for 2012-2022, it is interesting to note that the spending premium for inbound/international wellness tourists has declined (from 65% in 2012 to 41% in 2022). Meanwhile, the premium for domestic wellness tourists has increased (from 150% in 2012 to 175% in 2022).
The change in the international trip premium is likely due to a number of factors, including the strong growth of “secondary wellness trips” relative to “primary wellness trips” (because secondary wellness travelers tend to spend less per trip than primary wellness travelers). In addition, the range of offerings for wellness travelers has exploded over the last decade, with many more choices available at different price points, meaning that these experiences have become more accessible to middle-market travelers.
For the domestic trip premium, the recent shifts in the data may be due to the explosion in domestic travel during the pandemic (with people taking trips close to home while many international borders remained closed through 2022). It remains to be seen whether the domestic spending premium remains elevated or levels off as the tourism market fully recovers in the coming years.
Embracing Ageing Well:
Trends and Future Directions in Spas and Wellness
6
Les Nouvelles Esthetiques no’105
In a world where longevity is increasing, the concept of ageing has undergone a profound transformation. No longer seen as a period of decline, ageing is increasingly viewed as an opportunity for growth, exploration, and vitality. This shift in perspective has sparked a revolution in the spa and wellness industry, where innovative approaches to ageing well are emerging as key trends. LNE explores these trends and envisions future directions in the pursuit of holistic wellness for an ageing population.
Trends in Ageing Well:
Holistic Wellness Programs: Traditional spa treatments are evolving into comprehensive wellness programs tailored specifically for ageing individuals. These programs encompass not only physical rejuvenation but also mental and emotional wellbeing. They often include activities such as yoga, meditation, nutritional counseling, and mindfulness practices, offering a holistic approach to healthy ageing.
Integrative Medicine: Integrative medicine, which combines conventional treatments with complementary therapies, is gaining traction in the ageing population. Spas are incorporating modalities such as acupuncture, chiropractic care, and herbal medicine into their offerings, recognizing the importance of addressing the body's interconnected systems for optimal health.
Technology Integration: Technology is playing an increasingly prominent role in ageing well initiatives. From wearable fitness trackers to virtual reality relaxation experiences, spas are leveraging technology to enhance the wellness journey of their guests. Advanced skincare devices, genetic testing for personalized health recommendations, and telemedicine consultations are also becoming more prevalent, empowering individuals to take control of their health and ageing process.
Mind-Body Connection: The mind-body connection lies at the heart of ageing well practices. Spas are incorporating therapeutic techniques that foster mental resilience and emotional balance, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, stress management workshops, and art therapy. These modalities help individuals navigate the psychological aspects of ageing, promoting a sense of purpose and fulfillment in later life.
Sustainable Wellness: As environmental consciousness grows, sustainable wellness practices are becoming increasingly important in the spa industry. From eco-friendly facilities to organic skincare products, spas are prioritizing sustainability in their operations. Additionally, wellness programs that emphasize connection to nature, such as forest bathing and outdoor meditation sessions, are gaining popularity for their restorative benefits.
Future Directions in Ageing Well: Pioneering the Next Era of Wellness
As humanity progresses into an era of extended lifespans, the quest for optimal ageing becomes paramount. No longer confined to merely surviving,
spa therapies
individuals seek to thrive throughout their extended years. This paradigm shift catalyzes the evolution of spas and wellness centers into hubs of innovation, where cutting-edge technologies and personalized approaches converge to sculpt a future where ageing is synonymous with vitality and fulfillment. Let's delve into the promising avenues awaiting us in the realm of ageing well.
Personalized Wellness: At the nucleus of the future of ageing well lies personalization. Imagine a spa experience tailored precisely to your unique biology, preferences, and goals. Thanks to advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and big data analytics, this vision is swiftly becoming a reality. By harnessing the power of AI algorithms, spas of the future will glean insights from vast troves of health data, encompassing everything from genetic predispositions to lifestyle habits. Armed with this knowledge, wellness practitioners will craft bespoke plans encompassing nutrition, fitness regimens, stress management techniques, and beyond. Every aspect of the wellness journey will be meticulously calibrated to optimize vitality and longevity, ensuring that each guest embarks on a path uniquely suited to their needs.
Regenerative Therapies: The dawn of regenerative medicine heralds a paradigm shift in the ageing narrative. Gone are the days when agerelated degeneration was accepted as an inevitable consequence of the passage of time. Instead, spas of the future will offer a repertoire of regenerative therapies aimed at rejuvenating the body from within. Stem cell treatments, hailed as the vanguards of regenerative medicine, hold the promise of restoring youthful vigor by harnessing the body's innate capacity for repair. Platelet-rich plasma therapy, leveraging the healing properties of blood platelets, emerges as another potent tool in the arsenal against ageing. Furthermore, peptide injections, finely tuned to trigger specific physiological responses, offer targeted interventions to combat age-related ailments. Collectively, these regenerative therapies represent a seismic shift in our approach to ageing, offering a glimpse into a future where age truly becomes just a number.
Brain Health Optimization: In an age where cognitive decline looms as a pressing concern, preserving brain health takes precedence. Future spas will serve as bastions of cognitive optimization, offering a plethora of interventions designed to fortify mental acuity and resilience. Neurofeedback training, a burgeoning field at the intersection of neuroscience and technology, empowers individuals to sculpt their brain activity patterns, fostering enhanced cognitive function. Brain stimulation techniques, ranging from transcranial magnetic stimulation to non-invasive electrical stimulation, hold promise in rewiring neural circuitry and ameliorating age-related cognitive deficits.
Moreover, cognitive enhancement programs, encompassing tailored exercises and cognitive training protocols, equip individuals with the tools to maintain cognitive vitality well into their golden years. By prioritizing brain health, spas of the future pave the way for a future where age is no impediment to intellectual prowess and independence.
Virtual Wellness Experiences: The advent of virtual reality (VR) technology opens a portal to a realm where wellness transcends physical boundaries. Virtual wellness experiences, seamlessly blending immersive technology with age-old wellness practices, democratize access to holistic well-being. Imagine embarking on a guided meditation journey amidst the serene landscapes of distant continents or partaking in a rejuvenating yoga session atop snow-capped Himalayan peaks—all from the comfort of your living room. These virtual escapades not only foster relaxation and rejuvenation but also foster a sense of interconnectedness with the wider world. Moreover, virtual fitness classes, spanning a spectrum of disciplines from high-intensity interval training to mindful movement practices, cater to individuals of all ages and abilities, ensuring that wellness knows no bounds. By harnessing the transformative power of VR, spas usher in an era where wellness becomes an immersive, accessible, and deeply enriching experience for all.
Community-Centered Wellness: In an age characterized by unprecedented connectivity, the importance of community in fostering holistic wellbeing cannot be overstated. Spas of the future evolve into vibrant hubs of social interaction and support, catalyzing the formation of tight-knit wellness communities. Imagine a space where individuals converge not only to rejuvenate their bodies but also to nourish their souls through meaningful connections and shared experiences. Group wellness activities, spanning the gamut from group yoga sessions to laughter therapy workshops, foster a sense of camaraderie and belonging. Educational workshops, led by experts in fields ranging from nutrition to mindfulness, empower individuals to take charge of their well-being in a supportive, communal setting. Furthermore, networking events offer opportunities for serendipitous encounters and the forging of lifelong friendships. By placing community at the heart of wellness, spas of the future become catalysts for social cohesion, combatting the scourge of social isolation and fostering a sense of belonging among ageing individuals.
In conclusion, the future of ageing well brims with promise, propelled by a convergence of cuttingedge technologies and human-centric approaches. Spas and wellness centers stand at the vanguard of this revolution, pioneering new frontiers in holistic well-being. By embracing personalization, harnessing the power of regenerative medicine, prioritizing brain health, leveraging virtual wellness experiences, and fostering community-centered wellness initiatives, we unlock the full potential of ageing—a future where vitality, fulfillment, and joy know no bounds. As we embark on this transformative journey, let us redefine the ageing narrative, ushering in an era where every moment is imbued with vibrancy, purpose, and possibility.

4 Youth-Preserving Behaviours to Embrace Now
Ageing is inevitable, but doing it badly is most definitely not – and ageing well is far more under your control that you may realize. Sure, your greatgrandma may have made it into her 90s with a highball in one hand and a Marlboro in the other, but chances are you won’t, so now’s the time to work on embracing several of my favourite, super-supportive health behaviours. They’ll help you extend both lifespan and “healthspan,” allowing you to sidestep many of the health problems that can make aging so difficult. So which ones are the youth-savers you need to get into now? Start here:
1. Tune into your body’s built-in anti-ageing treatment – sleep!
You need sleep — good, restful, deep, restorative sleep. And if you think sleep is a waste of time, think again. While you’re snoozing, your body is performing essential tasks, clearing out cellular debris and making repairs, system-wide. During deep sleep and REM sleep —when dreaming happens — your brain’s cleansing system (known as the glymphatic system) kicks into gear. When you don’t sleep well or sleep only briefly, you miss out and damaged proteins and other toxins build up in the brain, leaving you feeling foggy in the short-term and, in the longterm, likely more vulnerable to rapid brain ageing and thedevelopment of neurological diseaseslike dementia.
But sleep keeps all your cells, muscles, organs and yes, your skin, more youthful by promoting autophagy – your overnight cellular recycling program. All of us are made up of trillions of cells and eventually their components start to wear out. But instead of simply throwing the diseased or just sub-par cells in the garbage, the body strips out the still-salvageable parts and recycles them to use for energy and to create new cells. When the autophagy system is bright and awake and working well – while you sleep – you give your body the downtime it needs to recover faster and better at any age.
2.Keep ageing at bay with small ‘stresses’ that make you stronger.
Though I always encourage my patients to relieve stress with meditative practices, just a little bit of stress – as in the healthy, physical kind – can give you an
edge in the anti-ageing game. Taken in small doses, stress can actually turn on your longevity genes and enable you to age better. Scientists call this, “hormesis,” the body’s response to small healthy stresses, like biking up a steep hill or practicing intermittent fasting. These quick bouts of adversity toughen up the cells, and the body’s defenses against ageing. A little pain and, cumulatively, a lot of gain!
Playing with temperature, in measured doses, is a fun, proactive way to promote wellness via hormesis. Take a dip in a cool pool, then a dunk in the hot tub or sauna; have a cold shower, then a sauna and back to the cold shower again. The temperature swings between cold and hot will lightly stress your cells and encourage autophagy. If there’s no sauna or pool nearby, take an advantage of a cold morning to walk the dog and skip the coat, or finish your morning shower with a cold rinse. There’s growing evidence that immunity and resistance to environmental stressors may be greater for people who live in colder climates.
3. Stop the clock every day — with meditation (or a meditative activity).
The internet, social media and the 24-hour news cycle are an information fire hose which, if we’re not careful, can overwhelm us, mentally and physically. Add that to our busy work schedules and home obligations, and a stress overdose is the ageaccelerating by-product. A vacation is the usual antidote, but our minds and bodies deserve a break a few times a week, not just once or twice a year. And the best way to get-away-from-it-all without leaving home is meditation, or, if you prefer, a meditative activity.
Embracing meditation, be it the more traditional “sitting” practice or simply a meditative activity that’s calming and you enjoy enough to do every other day or so, has a lot of proven benefits, short- and long-term. These mind/body time-outs help slow the ageing of the brain, lower blood pressure, and lengthen telomeres (the protective end caps on your DNA strands). They give you energy, improve your concentration, and help you sleep better. And they lift your mood — you just feel happier. Adding 20 minutes of some sort of mind-quieting practice will help you find relief from the day’s endless demands

and to-do-lists, all of which can contribute to symptoms like shallow breathing, tightness in the body, headaches, a clenched jaw, and so on.
What do to if you’re not a “sitter,” per se? Try a peaceful practice that suits you: something simple that you enjoy, unplugged, without phone interruptions. Knit in a quiet place; play an instrument; listen to music you love, eyes closed. Or dig in the garden, colour in a colouring book, wander in the woods, whatever works for you. The point is to let your mind drop into a quiet place, regularly, for 20 minutes or so. You’ll experience a shift, sometimes subtle and sometimes obvious.
4) Put ageing out to pasture – not yourself.
Just as the physical steps you take will impact how well you age, so will your thoughts, emotions and overall outlook on getting older. If you find yourself saying, “I’m too old for this crap,” kvetching about how much better things used to be, or writing every minor lapse off as a “senior moment,” I have one word of advice: STOP. Unless your goal is to push others away – and shorten your lifespan – train yourself to lighten up and embrace a more positive outlook on ageing. A case in point: aYale studyfound thatthose with more positive perceptions of ageing lived seven and a half years longer than those with less positive self-perceptions.
While you’re at it, be generous with yourself, and focus on what it is that feels good, motivates you and does no harm. Indulge in simple, healthy pleasures— a hot bath, a walk at sunset, a weekly treatment like a massage. As long as it’s health-affirming, you’re in.
Ultimately, each day is a gift and, as they say, ageing is better than the alternative. How to start the attitude readjustment? Go with the flow, practice gratitude, be thankful, and put some time intofinding and spreading joy. Try letting go of guilt and regret, and startlaughing more– at yourself and even at the sometimes humbling ageing process.Laughter helps boost the immune system, increasing T-cell activity, those “killer cells” that help our bodies fight viruses and tumors. It also helps lower blood pressure and cortisol levels, decreases pain and can also help stabilize blood sugar – all good things no matter where you are on the ageing journey.

These 13 Supplements have Age-Reversing Effects
While getting older is just a fact of life and something you can't avoid, most of us want to make sure we're doing all we can to feel and look our healthiest as each birthday passes by. It's not all about erasing wrinkles, sagging skin, and gray hairs. Sure. If you want to do that, by all means, go for it. But you also want to make sure you're doing all you can to take care of yourself as you age. That means eating well, staying active, and taking care of your mental health. Doing all of the above should be your main defense against the not-so-great effects of aging, but there are some other things you can try to ensure you're going the extra mile when it comes to your health. One of those things to consider is taking supplements and vitamins that could help support the process.
"Aging is a result of normal biological functioning where there are marked changes in our cells," explains registered dietitian Maya Feller, of Brooklyn-based Maya Feller Nutrition. "The process of aging can be accelerated secondary to diseases. We do know that antioxidants from foods and some supplements may act in a protective manner, reducing cellular damage. The general recommendation is to reduce the intake of pro-inflammatory foods that exacerbate systemic inflammation." And while there isn't a magic supplement or vitamin that can stop the aging process altogether and turn you into Benjamin Button, those antioxidants might make a big difference.
Serena Poon, chef, nutritionist, Reiki master, and founder of the Culinary Alchemy program, says antioxidants balance out the effects of free radicals, which are naturally created by your body but also come from environmental factors like pollution, chemicals, and smoke. "If free radicals and antioxidants are out of balance in the body, it can cause oxidative stress, which plays a role in several age-related diseases such as arthritis, diabetes, dementia, cancer, atherosclerosis, vascular diseases, obesity, osteoporosis, and metabolic syndromes."
Before you start buying all the anti-aging supplements out there, it's important to note that they shouldn't be your only solution. Again, healthy eating, exercise, and good lifestyle habits can really get you far. If you do decide to look into vitamins and supplements, it's recommended to consult your doctor or a healthcare professional who knows your personal medical history. The last thing you want to do is spend a lot of money on a product and find out it's going to hurt your body. "Safe supplementation is key," Feller says. "There is no one size that fits all, and any supplement recommendations need to be tailored to the individual based on their current health status as well as needs." And with that in mind, if you're ready to learn more about which vitamins and supplements can help, the experts weighed in below.
1. Vitamin A
This fat-soluble vitamin can help you maintain healthy, youthful-looking skin, says registered dietitian Stephanie Carter, founder of Carter Hall Lifestyle.
"Retinoids are compounds of both natural and biologically active forms of vitamin A—retinol, retinal, and retinoic acid," she says. "They are some of the most effective substances slowing the aging process by encouraging cellular turnover, stimulating collagen, treating acne and psoriasis, and softening wrinkles. In fact, vitamin A is the first vitamin approved by the FDA as an anti-wrinkle agent that changes the appearance of the skin surface and has anti-aging effects."
2. Vitamin C
Vitamin C was a popular recommendation among the experts we talked to. It's another nutrient that can promote youthful skin, and it helps out with collagen production. "Vitamin C actually reknits the collagen rebar back together after it's been damaged by sunlight," explains Steven Gundry, MD, author, medical director at the International Heart and Lung Institute, and founder of Gundry MD. "If you don't have any vitamin C, that collagen doesn't get remixed together, and you get those wrinkles and crevices. So you could have all the collagen in the world, but if you don't have vitamin C, you're not going to complete the process of linking collagen together. I really recommend that you take an extended timerelease vitamin C of 1000mg twice a day." Another bonus for this vitamin? Registered dietitian nutritionist Shana Spence, founder of The Nutrition Tea, says the vitamin has cancer-fighting properties.
3. Vitamin D
This was also a unanimous recommendation from the experts. That's because vitamin D plays a crucial role in protecting your bones. "Aging is associated with a reduction of being able to synthesize vitamin D in the skin upon sun exposure," Spence says. The vitamin can also boost energy and mood levels.
4. Vitamin B12
"As we get older, our bodies become naturally worse at absorbing vitamin B12, even if we get enough of the vitamin in their diet," Carter says. "If a blood test shows low levels of B12, a doctor may prescribe an oral supplement that contains very high doses of the vitamin, intramuscular shots of vitamin B12, or both." The nutrient also helps your energy levels.
5. Coenzyme Q10
Also known as CoQ10, it's an antioxidant that our bodies produce. "It plays essential roles in energy production and protects against cellular damage," Spence says. "Supplements can help reduce an accumulation of free radicals that accelerates the aging process and age-related disease."
6. Prebiotics and Probiotics
Gut health is pretty important, as it can have an effect on all the other systems in your body. Taking probiotics and prebiotics can help your skin health. "One of the best ways to slow down the aging process is to use prebiotics," Gundry says. "Those are the foods that feed friendly bacteria.
7. Calcium
By Sarah Yang
You should team up calcium and vitamin D for bone health and to prevent osteoporosis. "Calcium helps build and maintain bones while vitamin D promotes calcium absorption in the gut," Carter says. "Older adults absorb less calcium from their diets, which is thought to be caused by a deficiency of vitamin D." You can also get calcium from dairy products and leafy greens.
8. Omega-3
"Research has shown that omega-3 supplementation or you can also get omega-3s from eating fish, flax seeds, chia seeds, and walnuts, can reduce the shortening of telomeres DNA sequences, which shorten with age and of which the shortening is associated with age-related disease," Poon says.
9. Collagen
Collagen and elastin both work to give the skin its shape, and vitamin C helps support both of them. "Collagen is an essential component in connective tissue, providing structure to much of the body, including bones, skin, tendons, and ligaments," Carter says. "Essentially, collagen helps keep the skin plump and firm. However, as we age, we begin to notice wrinkles and lines. Vitamin C acts as a cofactor for amino acids proline and lysine, which help stabilize collagen against free radical damage. Elastin is a necessary protein that provides the skin with elasticity of tissues. Similar to collagen, elastin production slows with aging, and existing elastin breaks down, resulting in wrinkles around the eyes and mouth. Vitamin C is beneficial in promoting elastin synthesis, helping to slow the aging process." And because vitamin C and collagen are linked, Poon suggests taking the two supplements in tandem.
10. Magnesium
According to Spence, many people aren't getting enough magnesium daily, which is needed for muscle and nerve function.
11. L-Arginine
"L-arginine supplements support the body's natural production of nitric oxide, which will support your blood vessels and circulation. It also has been found to lower blood pressure," Poon says.
12. Mushroom and Mushroom Extract
"These fungi contain compounds called polyamines, the most famous of which is spermidine," Gundry explains. "Diets high in polyamines, especially spermidine, have recently been shown in a human study to increase both health span and life span.
13. Curcumin
Feller adds that supplements with anti-inflammatory and phenolic compounds such as vitamin C, curcumin, and resveratrol may be supportive of cellular health.

Sun-activated Serum from Esse Skincare™
More Vitamin D for skin … with less time in the sun We're constantly told that we should avoid the sun, but what if we need some healthy sun exposure to optimise skin health and prevent premature ageing?
The sun's UV rays accelerate ageing and increase your chances of skin cancer, but they also allow you to make Vitamin D, which has been shown to slow the ageing process and protect you from cancer.
For years, many scientists have been advocating for healthy sun exposure, pointing out that the benefits outweigh the risks.
Esse has launched a product that offers a balance. The Pro-Sun D serum contains the natural starting material - Provitamin D - which is activated by UV rays to boost Vitamin D levels in skin. More Provitamin D means more Vitamin D production with less time in the sun.
As we age, we produce less Provitamin D. 70-yearolds produce half what they did when they were 20. The Pro-Sun D serum allows clients to regain
their natural ability to use the sun to its full potential. Your first response might be to take a pill. Oral supplementation of Vitamin D is potentially toxic at levels that deliver optimal skin health.
For aeons, humans have synthesised Vitamin D on skin, and we have evolved mechanisms that prevent toxicity. Pill-form synthetic Vitamin D has only been a strategy for the last 100 years, so we haven't had time to adapt. Vitamin D has multiple benefits for skin. It improves barrier function resulting in hydrated skin. It regulates cell differentiation which plumps skin by increasing skin thickness and it calms inflammation by modulating the skin's immune response.
“Provitamin D has its own benefits, even in the absence of sun.”, says founder Trevor Steyn. “It boosts skin's ability to withstand harsh conditions by increasing levels of heat shock proteins.”

Advanced Aesthetics has become an Intricate Part of the Spa Offering spa therapies
Advanced aesthetics has seamlessly woven itself into the fabric of the spa industry, with advanced anti-aging treatments emerging as a cornerstone of the global beauty landscape, now constituting a billion-dollar industry. However, the mere mention of terms like "medi-spa" or "advanced aesthetics" often conjures up images of sterile, impersonal environments-a stark departure from the warm, inviting atmosphere traditionally associated with spas. So, how can spas integrate this burgeoning trend without diluting their core values or compromising the comfort of their clients?
Thorough Planning
Before embarking on the transformation of a segment of your spa into an advanced aesthetic area, meticulous planning is essential. Begin by delineating your treatment offerings. Carefully curate your product lines and select advanced aesthetic equipment that aligns seamlessly with both your spa's ethos and the preferences of your clientele. If navigating this terrain feels overwhelming, consider enlisting the expertise of an experienced consultant to guide your choices, minimizing the risk of costly missteps. While investing in advanced aesthetics represents a significant financial commitment, astute management can yield substantial returns.
Maintaining a clear distinction between your regular spa services and advanced aesthetic treatments is advisable. Develop separate treatment menus tailored to each offering before proceeding to design the area in accordance with your chosen treatments.
Waiting Area
For a medical advanced aesthetic area, providing a separate entrance for clients seeking these services is ideal. Privacy is paramount, particularly for clients undergoing invasive treatments who may prefer not to mingle with regular spa-goers post-treatment, especially if their skin exhibits redness or blotchiness.
By Jacoline Wentzel, Managing Director of The Spa Warehouse
If a separate entrance isn't feasible, consider establishing a dedicated reception desk and waiting area within your spa premises to preserve client confidentiality and comfort.
Consultation Area
Every client undergoing advanced aesthetic treatments requires a diagnostic consultation to tailor their treatment program to their specific needs. Designate a private space for these consultations, facilitating thorough assessments by qualified medical practitioners or therapists. Opt for carpeted flooring to minimize noise and ensure discretion during confidential discussions. Comfort should be prioritized in this area to establish trust and put clients at ease from the outset.
Treatment Room
Comfort remains paramount in the treatment room, for both clients and practitioners alike. While integrating the soothing colour palette of your spa, emphasize simplicity and cleanliness in your décor choices. Minimize decorative accents and opt for artwork that complements your spa's aesthetic without being distracting. Ensure ample space for a comfortable electric treatment bed, hydraulic therapist stool, and any necessary aesthetic equipment.
Investing in a high-quality treatment bed, such as those from the Lemi, can significantly enhance client comfort and practitioner efficiency.
Flooring and work surfaces should be easy to clean to maintain optimal hygiene standards. Consider materials like copper, stainless steel, or manufactured stone for durability and ease of maintenance. If your services include body treatments requiring a shower, integrating shower facilities into the treatment room layout is advisable.
Retail Area
The retail area is an integral component of your spa's offerings and can be integrated into the waiting or reception area. Create an engaging shopping experience by incorporating a mix of open and closed shelving and display areas. Proper lighting is crucial in this space, as it can significantly influence sales. Consult with a lighting expert to ensure products are well-lit from the front, with lighting that doesn't generate excessive heat, which could compromise product quality.
Staff
The staff selected to work in this area must be fully trained and cross-trained to ensure comprehensive knowledge of your treatment menu. While your receptionist should be conversant with the offerings, they should refrain from providing medical advice to clients over the phone. Ensure your staff regularly attends conferences and trainings to stay abreast of developments in the industry. They must be fully qualified, knowledgeable, and adhere to strict hygiene and safety standards, including proficiency in basic first aid and preparedness for emergencies.
Consultant
If you are not sure where to start or how to implement advanced aesthetics into your existing spa, my suggestion would be to get a knowledgeable spa or aesthetic consultant, who can assist you with the design, layout and budget. It might be an initial out lay but their years of experience will save you from investing in the wrong items. Once again, do your planning and make sure you choose the right person for your project as they will be an intricate part of your team until your spa opening.

A Peronsal Note
My entrepreneurial journey began 28 years ago when I had the privilege of working throughout Africa across a number of diverse industries. It was back then that I realised my passion in business development, and my life's purpose of facilitating human transformation.
When I launched Amani Spas in 2006, I took the opportunity to put my vocation to work. Each of the 32 destination spas we have launched and operated over the last 18 years has come with its own set of peculiarities and challenges. Those challenges, however, presented me with such a beautiful opportunity for something really powerful - the experiential design of a very simple formula that we now use to help other businesses to succeed.
True to our name (Amani means 'peace' and 'harmony' in Swahili, and 'hope' and 'aspire' in Arabic), we strive to create transformational life opportunities for our partners and their guests, our communities, and our people - who I consider to be my family.
We champion inclusion, innovation, diversity and empathy, and are accountable for our responsible social, economic, and environmental practices.to succeed.

Radiant Revival: EndyMed is Redefining Skin Rejuvenation with Unmatched Excellence spa therapies
In the vast landscape of skin rejuvenation treatments, EndyMed shines as a beacon of innovation and excellence, offering distinctive approaches and cutting-edge technologies that set it apart in the aesthetic industry. Let's explore the unique advantages of EndyMed and why it stands unrivaled in the realm of skin rejuvenation.
EndyMed 3DEEP RF
EndyMed's 3DEEP RF technology represents a groundbreaking approach to facial tightening treatments, revolutionizing the way we address aging concerns. Unlike conventional methods that merely scratch the surface, 3DEEP RF penetrates deep into the skin's layers, targeting the root causes of sagging skin and wrinkles.
3DEEP RF works by delivering controlled radiofrequency energy deep into the dermis, where collagen and elastin fibers reside. This energy is precisely distributed using multiple electrodes, ensuring uniform heating and optimal results. The controlled heating of the skin stimulates collagen remodeling, triggering a cascade of natural healing processes. As a result, the skin's structural support is strengthened, leading to firmer, more youthfullooking skin.
Client Feedback:
"At Anti-Aging Art we have included the various Endymed Pro treatments into our programmes for Skin Rejuvenation and Anti-Aging benefits. As a medical aesthetic's clinic, we believe that regular stimulatory treatments are key for collagen stimulation to maintain a youthful appearance and maintenance therapies are necessary to preserve skin health. Our utilisation of endymed within our treatment programmes has provided notable results, particularly in conditions more difficult to treat such as acne scarring and stretch marks. The treatments are well tolerated and the use of Endymed therapies has provided our patients with alternate and cost-effective ways to treat and maintain their skin”. Roxanne Ashkar & Dr Reza Mia, Anti-Aging Art Medical Aesthetics.
“I had the privilege of buying a Endymed Pure in 2022. The results I get is astonishing. Every time I think I can't be surprised anymore, my Endymed Pure shows me, that I haven't seen it all yet. The most popular treatment at the moment is the Eyelift, and full face FSR. I am totally in love with my Endymed Pure. Frances from Frances Aesthetics”
“The results of EndyMed's 3DEEP RF treatments are nothing short of remarkable. Clients typically experience a visible reduction in fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin, with improvements becoming more apparent over time. The collagen remodeling process initiated by 3DEEP RF continues to enhance skin quality and texture long after the treatment session, resulting in a more youthful and radiant complexion.
Moreover, aesthetic professionals can recommend complementary treatments or skincare products to enhance and prolong the results of 3DEEP RF. These may include hydrating serums, antioxidant-rich creams, or SPF formulations to protect the skin from further damage.” Dr Verster (The Netherlands)
Niekle van Heerden, Owner and Somatlogist of Distinctive Skin (Secunda), “I was thrilled to have partnered with Radiant healthcare and EndyMed. EndyMed has enabled me to suggest a variety of treatments to my clients and now I can choose the best suitable treatment for my clients skin condition. The EndyMed leaves me and my clients breathless after every treatment with exceptional results I am more than satisfied with my EndyMed”
Why Endymed?

How to Boost Collagen Naturally - Harnessing Nature's Power
By Nicole Sherwin, Founder Eco Diva Natural Superfood Skincare
In a world where skincare is often inundated with complex chemicals and questionable practices, the quest for healthier, more radiant skin has taken a turn towards nature's embrace. Collagen, the protein responsible for skin elasticity and firmness, forms the cornerstone of many skincare routines. However, instead of relying solely on synthetic products, a shift towards clean, kind, and ethical skincare infused with superfoods, coupled with plant-based wholefoods and collagen-boosting exercises, offers a holistic approach to enhancing collagen production. Let's delve into the synergy of these natural elements and how they can revitalize your skin from within.
1. Clean, Kind, and Ethical Skincare:
Embracing clean skincare involves using products formulated with minimal, natural ingredients devoid of harmful chemicals. Ethical skincare goes a step further, ensuring sustainability and cruelty-free practices throughout the production process. Opting for such products not only benefits your skin but also the environment and animal welfare.
Look for skincare products enriched with superfoods renowned for their collagen-boosting properties. Ingredients like vitamin C-rich Kakadu plum, antioxidant-packed green tea extract, and hydrating hyaluronic acid can stimulate collagen synthesis while nourishing the skin. Additionally, seek out brands committed to transparent sourcing and ecofriendly packaging, reflecting a dedication to both skin health and environmental stewardship. Look for brands that offer high counts of superfood in their formulations like baobab, cacao, maca, marula, cranberry, sesame, and moringa, these all help to stimulate and boost collagen from the outside in.
2. Plant-Based Wholefoods:
The old adage "you are what you eat" rings especially true when it comes to skin health. Incorporating plant-based wholefoods into your diet provides a bounty of nutrients essential for collagen production. Foods rich in vitamin C, such as citrus fruits, berries, and leafy greens, play a pivotal role in collagen synthesis by supporting the body's natural production processes.
Moreover, prioritize foods abundant in pro-collagen nutrients like copper and zinc found in seeds, nuts, legumes, and whole grains. These minerals aid in collagen formation and promote skin elasticity, helping to maintain a youthful complexion from the inside out. By fueling your body with nutrient-dense, plant-based foods, you lay the foundation for radiant skin that glows with vitality. High doses of natural mineral supplements like trace minerals are another way to ingest collagen stimulating actives, that help with bone, hair, nails, skin and teeth regeneration.
3. Collagen-Boosting Exercises:
Physical activity not only benefits overall health but also contributes to collagen production and skin rejuvenation. Incorporate exercises that engage the muscles and stimulate blood flow, such as strength training, yoga, and high-intensity interval training (HIIT). These activities promote circulation, delivering vital nutrients and oxygen to the skin cells while flushing out toxins.
Targeted facial exercises can help tone facial muscles and improve skin elasticity. Simple techniques like facial yoga and massage increase blood flow to the skin's surface, enhancing collagen synthesis and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
By integrating regular exercise routines into your lifestyle, you amplify the natural mechanisms that uphold skin health and resilience.
Achieving radiant, youthful skin doesn't have to entail harsh chemicals or invasive procedures. This holistic approach not only enhances collagen production but also fosters overall well-being, reflecting a harmonious balance between inner and outer beauty. Embrace nature's wisdom and unlock the secrets to timeless radiance.

SKNpen Meso
What is Mesotherapy Micro needling? Meso Micro needling combines two skin treatments: Microneedling and Mesotherapy.
Meso microneedling combines these two treatments by first performing microneedling to create microchannels in the skin, which allows for better penetration and absorption of the mesotherapy solution applied afterward. The combination of microneedling and mesotherapy can enhance the overall effectiveness of the treatment, leading to improved skin texture, tone, and appearance.
While both microneedling and mesotherapy work by triggering a response in the lower layers of the skin, they're each suited to different concerns, so you could choose which treatment to invest in depending on the most common indications among your clients. The SKNmeso pen offers a much more intense treatment as the needles are slightly thicker and longer and the pulsation of the machine is faster. It provides a more efficient way of administering the Skin Booster to the skin by delivering it simultaneously while performing the needling procedure.
The combination of microneedling and mesotherapy creates a synergistic effect, delivering unparalleled skin renewal that surpasses the capabilities of either treatment alone.
Benefits of Meso-Microneedling treatment
•Enhanced Product Absorption - Microneedling creates micro-injuries in the skin, allowing for better penetration of the mesotherapy solution into the deeper layers of the skin.
• Increased Collagen Stimulation - These microinjuries stimulate collagen production, complementing the collagen-boosting effects of mesotherapy. This can lead to improved skin texture, firmness, and elasticity over time.
• Targeted DeliveryMicroneedling allows for precise and targeted delivery of the mesotherapy solution to specific areas of concern, ensuring that the active ingredients reach their intended targets for optimal results.
• Comprehensive Treatment - By combining mesotherapy and microneedling, you can address multiple skin care concerns simultaneously, such as fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, pigmentation irregularities, and overall skin rejuvenation

““Anti-Ageing Medicine" and "Successful Ageing": Two Perspectives on Ageing” - Managing Editor, Les Nouvelles Esthetiques & Spa Magazine, Southern Africa
As individuals seek ways to maintain vitality and well-being throughout their lives, two distinct paradigms have emerged: "Anti-Ageing Medicine" and "Successful Ageing." Despite their apparent differences, a closer examination reveals both overlap and divergence in their philosophies, methods, and societal implications.
Anti-Ageing Medicine, advocated by practitioners often affiliated with organizations like the American Academy for Anti-Aging Medicine, prioritizes proactive interventions to counteract the physiological effects of ageing. These interventions range from hormone replacement therapies to nutritional supplements and lifestyle modifications, all aimed at mitigating age-related decline and extending longevity.
Conversely, "Successful Ageing" originates from gerontology, emphasizing the optimization of physical, mental, and social well-being as individuals age. It encourages strategies such as maintaining an active lifestyle, fostering social connections, and
Spa Industry Insights:
effectively managing chronic conditions to preserve a high quality of life in later years.
Despite initial disparities, there are intriguing intersections between these paradigms. Research cited in the abstract suggests that the goals articulated by anti-ageing practitioners often align with those of successful ageing models. Both emphasize reducing disease risk, maintaining cognitive and physical function, and fostering social engagement. However, the methods employed and the underlying philosophies differ significantly.
Anti-ageing practitioners may employ interventions like hormone therapies and dietary supplements, as a means to "optimize" or "enhance" the ageing process. In contrast, proponents of successful ageing advocate for holistic approaches that prioritize lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise, and social support.
The convergence of rhetoric between anti-ageing and successful ageing reflects broader societal attitudes toward ageing. Successful ageing, with its focus on autonomy, independence, and productivity in later life, has gained widespread acceptance. By adopting similar language and goals, anti-ageing medicine taps into these cultural norms, positioning
itself as a pathway to achieving the ideal of successful ageing.
However, this alignment prompts questions about the commercialisation and medicalisation of ageing. Anti-aging interventions often come with significant financial costs, raising concerns about equity and access. Furthermore, the pursuit of eternal youth can perpetuate ageism by reinforcing the notion that ageing is inherently negative and must be combated at any cost.
The tension between anti-ageing and successful ageing also underscores deeper philosophical debates about ageing and the human lifespan. While anti-ageing medicine seeks to defy biological ageing through scientific innovation, successful ageing promotes acceptance of the ageing process while striving to optimize outcomes within those constraints.
In my opinion, while anti-ageing medicine and successful ageing may share common goals and rhetoric, they represent distinct approaches to the challenges and opportunities of ageing. Recognising and navigating these differences is crucial for promoting healthy ageing and fostering a society that values individuals across their lifespan.

spa business
Aesthetic Therapist Recruitment Insights:
Monthly Opinion Piece: Miranda Forrester
Onboarding and introducing a new employee into your business requires careful consideration of the contribution this person will bring into your business, especially if the core duties include performing advanced skin care and aesthetic services, promoting desirable results, and focusing on major, global concerns such as ageing - or the prevention thereof.
The personal care sector which incudes skin care, result-driven treatments and solutions and aesthetics is booming, to say the least.
In order to keep up with the demands and trends, employers within the sector are having to rely on their employee having the necessary knowledge, skills, and the competence to perform these services, most of which are in the absence of a medical specialist.
Clients and patients now have on the demand access to online information from credible sources as well as social media influencers promoting the next big trend. Instead of investing in their skin's health, consumers are opting to purchase tools and products from (ungoverned) online stores without the proper knowledge and training on how to correctly incorporate these elements for the desired result. In an age of technology and instant gratification, consumers want instant results and will do just about anything to achieve it.
This leaves salons and clinics alike in a predicament whereby they want to keep up with the demand, and “waiting years” for a therapist to become adequately trained and skilled in the desired treatments is wasting valuable time and the potential of money into the business - or so they believe.
In South Africa particularly, we are faced with a volatile situation whereby desperate employers are “promoting” their incompetent or unqualified employees with in-house training or suggesting YouTube videos to acquire the skills to perform
various aesthetic services, without any recourse of the consequences. In such, an employer is putting their employee at risk of not only potentially selfinjury, but more concerning - that of the consumer who for the most part is unaware of their therapist's skills and competence.
In the absence of an official governing body to oversee and regulate the personal grooming industry - it is up to the key industry stake holders and service providers to ensure our partners in the industry, be it a salon, spa, aesthetic clinic, or medical practice - is offering their clients services and solutions within their scope of practice.
Scope of practice refers to the limit of knowledge, skills and experience required to carry out a certain profession.
We therefore need to ensure that the therapists who are tasked with Aesthetic duties are performing within their scope of practice.
In South Africa, a qualified (or licensed) Somatology professional (with a minimum two year diploma) may be referred to as an Aesthetician - who is permitted to work on the epidermal layer of the skin and who may operate without the presence of a medical doctor.
A medical aesthetician may in the presence and under supervision of a medical doctor perform further advanced or invasive procedures.
Leading academic institutions in South Africa have tapped into the demand created and are offering industry professionals further qualifications with the focus on Aesthetics which include the Dermal Aesthetic Diploma, Advanced Somatology Diploma and previously the Degree in Somatology.
The onus now lies with employers in ensuring they offer their clients, not just the latest trends and
products in Aesthetics, but the surety that the therapist offering these services are adequately qualified, has the necessary knowledge and is more than competent to perform these advanced procedures.
Employers must ensure that when hiring a new aesthetic professional to the team, this employee will together with the existing team promote a professional environment and have the consumer's best interest at heart.
Thus, to onboard an Aesthetic Therapist for your establishment, ensure the following are in place before inviting them for an interview
• They are adequately qualified with a minimum 2 year Cosmetology or Health and Skin Care diploma from a credible academic institution.
• Preferably - Additional qualification in advanced Somatology or Dermal Aesthetics.
• Accredited certification obtained in individual practices offered (Laser Hair Removal, Derma Pen, Micro-needling, Chemical Peels) etc.
• The product partners must ensure that they only train qualified individuals in the products usedespecially with resurfacing products and agents.
• Contactable references of academic institutions and previous employers must be provided.
• Request case studies or thesis studies on advanced therapies performed where operationally appropriate.
Confirm with your service providers and product specialist if your new employee's skills and scope of practice aligns with their training and protocols.
The onus of the success of an aesthetic professional is not just a legal requirement for insurance purposes but also an ethical requirement.

Addressing Anti-ageing with optiphi® Helix™ DNA System
Although everyone ages differently, many have claimed to have found the ultimate secret to antiageing, be it the latest aesthetic treatment or a great skincare product. However, you may only be addressing the extrinsic-contributing factors without giving thought about what is happening on the inside.
There is a multitude of factors that contribute to your skin's health ranging from environmental factors such as UV radiation and pollutants, to lifestyle factors such as sleep and stress and even your diet and supplements. Furthermore, there are the intrinsic contributing factors which are your genes. Although we can easily identify which external factors play a role in our lives, such as how much time we spend in the sun and what our diets consist of, we cannot ascertain to what extent these factors contribute to our skin's condition. Additionally, we do not readily know what our genes say about our skin ageing. With the advances in technology, optiphi® has now unlocked this information and places the answers in your hands to give you the power to improve your skin and the overall ageing process.
The optiphi® Helix™ DNA Test range is a wonderful tool to assist you in making informed decisions regarding your skin and general well-being. Our optiphi® Helix™ DNA Tests provide you with your potential genetic risk for developing certain concerns related to various aspects of your physiology. By understanding this information, you are empowered to potentially mitigate the overall risk of developing these concerns by making the recommended diet and lifestyle changes offered in the optiphi® Helix™ DNA reports.
To address all your skin-related concerns, optiphi® has developed a patented system to assess your skin visually and intrinsically to determine your skin's unique needs, the Medical Skincare Code™ (MSC Code™) system. This grading system assesses the current presentation of your skin at a given point in time as well as unlocks your DNA data to your skin ageing process.
This system equips you to determine which intrinsic
and extrinsic factors are contributing to your skin's ageing. It is difficult to quantify the extent to which extrinsic factors are contributing to your skin's condition, however, we are aware of what we expose ourselves to in terms of the environment, our skincare regime and lifestyle habits. Thus, we can be more mindful of what we expose our skin to. The missing piece of the puzzle is then our intrinsic factors.
While we can't immediately know what our genes reveal, technological advancements like the optiphi® Helix™ DNA Test now allow us to examine your inherent genetic factors. This assessment helps identify the predisposing risks you may carry for various aspects of skin health. Consequently, we can better understand which aspects, whether intrinsic or extrinsic ageing, require prioritized attention for management and treatment.
To conduct the visual assessment of the skin and determine your extrinsic MSC Code™, optiphi® has identified five main skin characteristics that contribute to early signs of ageing, namely wrinkles, volume loss and sagging, sensitivity and redness, pigmentation, dryness and dehydration and lastly acne prone. The next part would entail having a deeper look in your intrinsic factors. The optiphi® Helix™ Skin Test is thus designed to fill this information gap by highlighting how your genes contribute to your skin ageing and provides you with an intrinsic MSC Code™ score. To accomplish this, the optiphi® Helix™ Skin Test analyses 22 different genes and 8 skin categories which contribute to the intrinsic MSC Code™ score in varying degrees.
Your extrinsic MSC Code™ gives you insight into the order of how the concerns should be treated whereas the intrinsic MSC Code™ obtained from the optiphi® Helix™ Skin Test will supplement your treatment programme as a tool to guide you on how to treat the skin concerns in question. This allows for a targeted, innovative and results-driven approach towards your skin journey and the science behind the ageing process.
The causes of skin ageing are numerous and diverse.
By optiphi Skincare
Some of these factors include cellular senescence, inflammation, prolonged sun exposure, collagen degradation, glycation, and more. The optiphi ® Helix™ Skin Test targets various skin-related concerns that directly impact the ageing process. These include addressing issues such as wrinkles, volume loss, tissue damage, dermal sensitivity, detoxification, inflammation, antioxidant capacity, cellular rejuvenation, DNA repair, pigmentation, sun sensitivity, dryness, dehydration, and acne-prone and oily skin. By assessing and addressing these specific concerns, the test aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of individual skin health and ageing factors. Your DNA report indicates the optiphi® products, active ingredients and treatments best suited to your intrinsic needs so that your optiphi® skincare professional can guide you on a results-driven regimen.
All that is required to unlock the answers to better health is a simple, non-invasive swab of the inside of your mouth. No pain, no fuss. A signed consent form is completed, and the swab is delivered to the optiphi® DNA lab to process, where after you will receive a comprehensive reports informing you about your genetic predisposition and potential interventions.
Your journey towards personalised medicine doesn't only need to stop at your skin health. The optiphi® Helix™ Health Test highlights potential risks regarding your general health such as insulin resistance, inflammation, inefficient detoxification, and the risk for spontaneous blood clots. You are then provided with a variety of options on what you can do to reinforce your health. The optiphi® Helix™ Diet Test addresses inefficient metabolism that may increase your risk for weight-loss resistance and obesity. A diet type and exercise intensity levels are suggested for you to follow to assist in minimising the risk for increased weight. The optiphi® Helix™ Hormone Test looks at potential shortfalls in your hormone balances that may affect several pathways such as appetite, mood, memory and reproductive health.

Hair Wellness: A Concept Gaining Momentum Globally
Hair wellness has emerged as a burgeoning international trend, captivating individuals across diverse demographics. From specialized hair care products to holistic approaches aimed at nurturing scalp health and promoting hair growth, the concept of hair wellness encompasses a broad spectrum of practices and ideologies. This trend has gained momentum worldwide, with a growing number of people acknowledging the significance of tending to their hair and scalp for overall well-being. But what factors have contributed to the prominence of hair wellness in recent years?
In today's image-conscious society, individuals are increasingly striving to present their best selves. Hair, being a central element in defining one's appearance and self-image, has become a focal point for many in their pursuit of beauty and confidence. Consequently, people are investing more time and resources into maintaining the health and vitality of their hair.
Moreover, the ascent of social media and digital platforms has played a pivotal role in amplifying beauty trends, including those related to hair care and wellness. Influencers, celebrities, and beauty experts routinely disseminate tips, techniques, and product endorsements to millions of followers worldwide, shaping consumer preferences and behaviours. As a result, individuals are exposed to a diverse array of hair wellness concepts and are increasingly inclined to incorporate them into their daily routines.
Another driving force behind the surge in interest in hair wellness is the growing emphasis on holistic health and well-being. People are increasingly recognizing the interconnectedness of various aspects of their health, encompassing physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Hair health is no longer solely viewed as an aesthetic concern but is also seen as a reflection of overall health and vitality. Consequently, individuals are embracing holistic approaches to hair care that prioritize nourishing the scalp, enhancing circulation, and supporting hair growth from within.
The escalating prevalence of environmental stressors such as pollution, stress, and lifestyle habits has further fueled the demand for hair wellness solutions. These external factors can adversely affect hair health, leading to issues such as dryness, breakage, and hair loss. In response, consumers are seeking products and treatments that offer protection against environmental damage while fortifying and rejuvenating their hair.
As consumers increasingly prioritize the health and vitality of their hair, the hair wellness industry is poised for continued growth and innovation in the years ahead.
Scalp Facials
Scalp facials have emerged as a transformative trend, offering a unique and rejuvenating experience that goes beyond traditional hair care routines. Much like a facial for the skin, a scalp facial provides a holistic approach to scalp health and hair wellness, combining deep cleansing, nourishing treatments, and therapeutic massage techniques.
At the heart of the scalp facial trend is the recognition of the scalp as a vital component of overall wellness. Just as skincare experts emphasize the importance of regular facials for maintaining healthy, radiant skin, haircare professionals advocate for scalp facials to promote scalp health and optimize hair growth. By focusing on the scalp, where hair growth begins, these treatments address common concerns such as dandruff, dryness, and inflammation, while also promoting relaxation and stress relief.
One of the key elements of a scalp facial is the massage component, which plays a crucial role in stimulating circulation, relieving tension, and enhancing overall well-being. The gentle massage techniques used during a scalp facial help to increase blood flow to the scalp, delivering essential nutrients and oxygen to the hair follicles. This improved circulation not only promotes hair growth but also helps to detoxify the scalp by flushing out toxins and impurities.
In addition to improving circulation, scalp massage provides numerous therapeutic benefits for both the scalp and the mind. The rhythmic kneading and manipulation of the scalp promotes a sense of relaxation and tranquility.
Furthermore, scalp massage can help to stimulate the production of natural oils in the scalp, which are essential for maintaining healthy, hydrated hair. By gently massaging the scalp, therapists can help to distribute these oils evenly along the hair shaft, preventing dryness and promoting shine. Additionally, scalp massage can help to exfoliate the scalp, removing dead skin cells and buildup that can clog hair follicles and inhibit hair growth.
Scalp facials often incorporate nourishing treatments and ingredients to complement the massage component. These treatments may include hydrating masks, nutrientrich serums, and essential oils, all designed to moisturize, strengthen, and revitalize the scalp and hair.
As consumers seek out treatments that prioritize both beauty and well-being, scalp facials have become a highly sought-after service in spas and salons worldwide.

10 Factors Influencing Dry Skin
By Dr Ernst Eiselen - Independent Medical Consultant to Environ Skin Care
Your skin, the body's largest organ, serves three vital functions: protection, regulation, and sensation control. Despite its crucial role, it is susceptible to various conditions, including dryness. The majority of people will experience dry or dehydrated skin at some stage in their lives. If you have dry skin, you may recognise symptoms like dry patches, dehydration lines, tightness, roughness, scaly-looking skin or redness and sensitivity.
Dr Ernst Eiselen from Environ Skin Care says that dry skin is a common condition caused by inherited and metabolic factors, as well as environmental conditions such as heat, cold and pollution.
He argues that optimal hydration originates internally, rather than externally. “Common moisturisers often attempt to temporarily place extra water in the skin or prevent water evaporation by applying water-repellant sealants. It is more effective to assist the skin in building up natural sealants as protective barriers to therefore restrict water loss. The application of highly active vitamins A, C and E combined with other antioxidants and peptides is the most efficient means to achieve this,” says Eiselen.
There are many reasons for dry skin, some of which are listed below:
1. Genetics: If you suffer from dry skin you might be genetically predisposed to having an underactive sebaceous gland. This means that your skin lacks the oil it needs to retain moisture and to build a protective barrier against the environment.
2. Intrinsic aging: As you age, your barrier function is weakened, leading to a loss of moisture.
3. Medications: Some medications may lead to dryness in the skin, both on the face and body.
4. Lifestyle factors: Daily choices affect your skin health. As an example, the overindulgence in alcohol can lead to a dehydrated skin.
5. UV exposure: As the skin is damaged by UV exposure, it can thicken and become dry.
6. Extreme environmental changes: Weather extremes paired with sun exposure results in your skin losing moisture.
7. Exposure to harsh ingredients: Some chemicals remove the natural oils from the skin, causing it to become very dry.
8. Over cleansing: Over cleansing can strip the top layer of skin and remove natural oils.
9. Excessive exfoliating: Over exfoliation can leave the skin compromised and exposed to dryness.
10. Invasive treatments: Overly invasive treatments can leave skin dry.
Dr Eiselen says that dry or dehydrated skin can be treated by following two steps:
First, he recommends replenishing the skin’s natural vitamin A levels. Research in the field of vitamin A
has proven that a deficiency in this vital nutrient is directly linked to a compromised skin barrier function and loss of essential hydration as well as moisture.
One of the products recommended, is a product like the Environ Ionzyme C-Quence Serum into your daily routine to deliver a suitable dose of vitamins A, C and E to the skin.
Secondly, he recommends the Environ Super Moisturiser which is clinically proven after 30 days to support the skin barrier function and retention of moisture substantiated with a 14% decrease in trans-epidermal water loss, with continued use.

We believe that true deageing involves restoring your skin's inherent vitality, rather than simply attempting to halt the natural ageing process. Ageing, when approached with care and attention to one's overall well-being, becomes a journey of wisdom and grace.
With the passage of time, our skin undergoes profound shifts in functionality, predominantly driven by a decline in collagen and elastin production. This decline manifests as a loss of elasticity and firmness, marking the visible signs of ageing. Moreover, the skin's protective barrier weakens, leading to heightened water loss and increased vulnerability to external aggressors. Premature ageing can further be exacerbated by factors such as prolonged sun exposure, compromised gut health, and exposure to environmental pollutants.
Recognizing these intricate dynamics, we advocate for a comprehensive approach to de-ageing that addresses both internal and external factors. Our ethos emphasizes nurturing your skin from within, fortifying its resilience and vitality through a curated range of products and practices.
Central to our approach is the understanding that optimal skin health is intricately linked to overall wellbeing. We believe in empowering individuals to embrace ageing as a natural process while equipping them with the tools to support their skin's functionality and radiance.
Through meticulous research and innovation, we have developed a line of products designed to rejuvenate and restore your skin's vitality. From nourishing skincare formulations to targeted
supplements, each product is crafted with the utmost care and attention to efficacy.
Our commitment extends beyond mere aesthetics; we strive to redefine the narrative surrounding ageing, celebrating it as a journey of self-discovery and selfcare. With Franck Global, embark on a transformative journey towards ageless beauty, where every step is a testament to honoring your skin's timeless resilience and vitality.

An Interview with Dr Juanita Killian Motivation, Challenges and Committment
Dr Juanita Kilian, qualified as pharmacist at the University of North West, South Africa, thereafter she earned her Master's degree in derma-ceutical product development, and then achieved her Doctorate in Transdermal Delivery Technology at the University of London, School of Pharmacy.
Dr Juanita has engaged in the study of transdermal delivery systems and has made unique formulation discoveries, which had a profound influence on the development of the DrK Dermal Health Care range.
Throughout her career, Dr Juanita has worked extensively in South Africa, Africa, Scandinavia, UK, Europe, UAE and Russia in which during this time has been actively researching and re-educating herself in the latest skincare developments, microbiome research, derma-ceutical and mediceutical technology available.
What motivated Dr Junaita to specialize in dermatology and the development of DrK Dermal Health?
At DrK Dermal Health, our philosophy is deeply rooted in a set of core values and principles that form the foundation of our approach to skincare and wellness. At the forefront of our ethos is a commitment to clinical research and data, which ensures that every product and treatment we offer is backed by rigorous scientific investigation and evidence-based practice. The DrK focus is on achieving a 'Prebiotic approach for a Probiotic effect with special focus on Cellular Health'.
DrK is a Medi-ceutical health and wellness brand that pioneers the science behind optimum skin health. Over the past few years inflammatory disorders such as allergies and eczemas have rapidly increased. The intolerance of sensitive skin to many external stimuli (environment), mostly resulting from a defective skin barrier function leads to discomfort, fragility, dehydration, scaliness and redness. The DrK range consists of a unique blend of active ingredients that will restore sensitive skin and prevent it at all cost. Together with restoring optimum skin health the DrK Dermal Health Care Premium Serums also treats the main skin conditions such as pigmentation, ageing and sensitive skin.
All of the products in the DrK Dermal Health Care range are intended to reinforce the skin's microbial
and physical barrier function, helping to achieve a reinforced skin, especially for people living in urban environments and harsh climates.
How do you ensure that DrK Dermal Health maintains a commitment to both efficacy and safety in its products and treatments protocols?
We believe in the power of empirical data to drive innovation and to deliver results that are both safe and effective. We achieve this by employing a multifaceted approach that combines welldocumented and researched actives with continuous re-evaluations and reformuations in response to the dynamic and ever-changing environment of skincare science. We use the knowledge and expertise to conduct thorough reviews of scientific literature, clinical trials, and empirical data to identify compounds with proven efficacy and safety profiles.
We recognise that the landscape of skincare is constantly evolving, with new discoveries and advancements emerging regularly. To stay at the forefront of innovation and maintain our commitment to excellence, we conduct ongoing evaluations of our products and treatments.
One such pioneering approach is our focus on treatments designed to prevent destruction and repair the microbiome, coupled with the integration of nucleotide technology. Our microbiome-focused treatments recognise the crucial role that the skin's microbial ecosystem plays in maintaining overall health and vitality.
Additionally, we incorporate nucleotide technology to further enhance their efficacy and reparative properties. Nucleotides are essential building blocks of DNA and RNA, and their inclusion in skincare formulations supports cellular repair, regeneration, and resilience. By harnessing the power of nucleotides, we facilitate the skin's natural processes of renewal and rejuvenation, promoting a smoother, more radiant complexion.
Central to our approach is the recognition of the interconnectedness between the gut, brain, and skina concept known as the gut-brain-skin axis. This philosophy underscores our understanding that imbalances or disturbances in one area can manifest as issues in another. By addressing the underlying factors that contribute to dysregulation within this
axis, such as inflammation, stress, and poor dietary choices, we strive to promote holistic health and well-being from the inside out.
What role do you believe holistic wellness plays in skincare?
Holistic wellness plays a fundamental role in skincare, as it recognizes that true beauty and health are not just skin-deep but are interconnected with overall well-being. At DrK Dermal Health, we wholeheartedly embrace this perspective and integrate it into our approach to skincare. We understand that factors such as nutrition, lifestyle, stress, and emotional wellbeing profoundly impact the health and appearance of the skin. Therefore, our approach goes beyond surface-level treatments to address the root causes of skin concerns. By adopting a holistic perspective, we aim to create a nurturing environment that supports the body's innate ability to heal and regenerate.
Your motivation:
Woman, health, empowerment, passion, success, believe.
I have always had a passion for the skincare industry and not to only offer people a solution to the symptoms of whatever skin concerns they present with, I wanted to offer a solution to the cause of each individuals concerns, thereby treating the cause and the symptoms in a holistic approach, considering the brain, gut skin axis. Great skin starts in the gut.
Challenges:
Through education everything is possible, but it can take time. Our aim is to get our business partners and therapists to understand our concept of brain, gut, skin connection, our microbial systems and environmental triggers.
Reward:
Our rewards is in achieving ultimate skin health through our skincare and nutraceutical offerings. To receive positive feedback from our clients and their clients. To hear how our products have improved our clients skin and body and gut health and how DrK have a positive impact on how a person sees themselves.

A Plan for All Seasons: Modifying Integrated Skincare
By
50 Les Nouvelles Esthetiques no’105
Jenifer L. Henderson, MD, FACS
As days grow shorter and much of the country welcomes cooler weather, everyone find themselves shifting their habits - from what they wear and eat to when and how they exercise and more. Though it's frequently overlooked, skincare should also shift with the seasons. As the air grows drier and indoor heaters kick on, the skin becomes less hydrated, and clients /patients face a different set of environmental insults. It's worth emphasizing that, while there may be fewer hours of sunlight, UV exposure remains a concern through the winter months. Clients may need to tweak their daily skincare regimens in the weeks and months ahead to support their skin health in the face of changing exposures.
When it comes to integrated skincare, seasonal adjustments can be essential to optimizing outcomes. Clients should use products formulated to protect and moisturize the skin before, during, and after procedures. At SkinCeuticals, we formulate products with clients' changing needs in mind. So when it comes to moisturizers and SPF, you and your clients can find the right balance of ingredients in the ideal formulation base to optimize the user experience.
Of course, there are some constants, like the antioxidants that are essential to skin health every day, all year long. We are proud of our leadership in the antioxidant space, with recognized formulations like CE Ferulic, Phloretin CF, and more recently, Silymarin CF. As noted by Dr. Jenifer Henderson, these formulations deliver the proven efficacy of our stable L-ascorbic acid in combination with other potent antioxidants to help protect the skin from environmental insults and optimize recovery in the wake of procedures.
Clients make a significant monetary investment when they choose aesthetic procedures - from injectables to surgery. Proper skin care is a simple, accessible, and affordable way to protect and maximize that investment for the long-term. SkinCeuticals is honored to partner with you and your clients in optimizing skin health. - Alison A. Murakami, PhD_VP, Medical Affairs
Why are antioxidant products beneficial in skincare, especially in integrated skincare?
Jenifer Henderson, MD: Antioxidants are important in skincare because they help to minimize oxidative stress on the skin caused by environmental insults. Antioxidants are important in integrated skincare, because it's important to get the skin in good condition prior to any procedure or surgery. When patients are in a routine of using antioxidants before surgery, they're going to continue their use during the recovery period and afterwards. They start to see improvements in the skin-minimizing fine lines, improving firmness and elasticity of the skin-before the procedure.
Antioxidants help optimize results and support recovery. They neutralize free radicals and therefore may help decrease inflammation. Also, it is well known by aesthetic physicians that L-ascorbic acid is involved in all phases of the wound healing.
In our practice, we have patients use antioxidants
spa therapies
right away after surgery. And in fact, we put the first application on after ablative laser procedures while they're still under anesthesia.
Ultimately, patients want to maintain results for as long as they can, and topical antioxidants help there, too.
Every time we do a surgery, we include a skincare surgery kit in the cost of the procedure. For example, for a face lift, we provide a gentle cream cleanser, CE Ferulic, Epidermal Repair, sunscreen-usually Light Moisture UV Defense SPF 50. We also include Antioxidant Lip Repair, because lips become very dry after surgery. We give the kit to the patient at their pre-operative appointment, which is usually two weeks before the surgery, so they can start using the products.
Which antioxidants ingredients do you prefer for integrated skincare?
Dr. Henderson: I use CE Ferulic for most everything ablative or non-ablative, because CE Ferulic is 15% L-ascorbic acid, and I prefer that patient use the highest percentage of vitamin C topically that they can tolerate. If patients can't tolerate CE Ferulic after fully ablative, we'll switch to Phloretin CF, with a slightly lower percentage of L-ascorbic acid.
CE Ferulic also has the benefit of vitamin E, which is also an antioxidant that works together with vitamin C to support recovery.
For men especially, we like Phloretin CF gel. It tends to work well post shaving. As opposed to a serum, many men seem to prefer the gel formulation. I also prefer the Phloretin CF for oily skin and for patients that have hyperpigmentation.
For acne-prone skin, I like new Silymarin CF, which helps prevent lipid peroxidation in the sebum, which is a factor in acne production. It's also very good for oily skin.
Is it important to moisturize?
Dr. Henderson: We know that skin heals better in a moist environment, so we like to have the skin hydrated post any procedure. Certainly, getting the skin in optimum quality before we create an injury or an insult to the skin improves the post healing outcome.
Especially for ablative laser procedures, which I do quite a few of, I like Hydra Balm. It creates a really good occlusive barrier and helps the patient with some itching and discomfort. It's great for patients with severe dry or compromised skin. I use Hydra Balm until the patient re-epithelializes, and then we usually switch to a product that helps reinforce the skin barrier. This is also a good option for any patient with very dry skin.
We may modify our recommendations seasonally. In summertime, when it's hot and patients sweat a bit, most people prefer a lighter formulation. Daily Moisture is a lighter formulation that is good for all skin types. If that's not enough for the patient, typically
we'll add additional hydration with Hydrating B5 Gel; they use that first and put the daily moisturizer on top of it.
In winter months and in aged skin, we tend to like Emollience. They can also use Triple Lipid Restore 2:4:2, which helps improve barrier function. It's got ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids, and it's good for all skin types. That tends to be a really good product for winter time.
What is the role of topical hyaluronic acid in integrative skincare?
Dr. Henderson: I love topical hyaluronic acid yearround. It's a great plumper of the skin and lips, and it promotes elasticity and firmness of the skin. We use it following most of the procedures that we do. I like it especially for patients who have had injectables; it adds plumpness and hydration to the skin. It's a good surface hydrator.
What about UV protection? Why is it important even in the fall and winter when patients may perceive that it's not as necessary?
Dr. Henderson: UV protection is so important. Post procedure, you want to prevent re-pigmentation of skin that you've just treated. We use it right after any procedure that we do in the office, for the most part.
It also is important to protect scars from the sun, since scar remodeling and reformation after an injury can be affected by sun exposure.
You want to maintain results after any procedures. UV protection is important to maintain the results after we've achieved a good outcome from whatever procedure we're doing.
We recommend patients use SPF every day. Patients that tend to have oily skin or don't want to do a lot of additional skincare or use a lot of additional skincare products can use their sunscreen as a daily moisturizer.
And even in the winter when we don't have a lot of sun, SPF is important because UV is still present.

Facial Symmetry with Dentistry
52
Facial symmetry plays a pivotal role in our perception of beauty and youthfulness. In the realm of dentistry, achieving optimal facial symmetry is not merely an aesthetic pursuit but also a means of enhancing the anti-aging appearance of individuals. By leveraging advanced dental techniques and technologies, dentists can harmonize facial proportions, restore balance, and rejuvenate the overall aesthetic of the face.
One of the key factors influencing facial symmetry is dental occlusion—the alignment and positioning of the teeth when the jaws are closed. Malocclusion, or misalignment of the teeth and jaws, can disrupt facial harmony and contribute to an aged appearance. By addressing malocclusion through orthodontic treatment, such as braces or clear aligners, dentists can realign the teeth and jaws, improving facial symmetry and restoring a more youthful look.
Furthermore, dental restorations play a crucial role in enhancing facial aesthetics and combatting signs of aging. As individuals age, natural wear and tear, decay, and trauma can lead to the loss or deterioration of teeth. Missing or damaged teeth not only affect oral function but also impact facial symmetry and appearance. Dental implants, crowns, bridges, and veneers offer effective solutions for restoring missing or damaged teeth, filling out facial contours, and rejuvenating the smile.
In addition to addressing structural issues, dentists also employ cosmetic dental procedures to enhance facial aesthetics and promote a more youthful appearance. Teeth whitening treatments brighten the smile, reducing the appearance of stains and discoloration associated with aging. Similarly, dental bonding and contouring techniques can reshape and sculpt the teeth, correcting minor imperfections and creating a more balanced smile.
Moreover, advances in digital dentistry and computer-aided design and manufacturing technology have revolutionized the field of cosmetic dentistry, enabling dentists to create highly precise and natural-looking restorations tailored to each patient's unique facial features.
In Discussion with Dr Sheryl Smithies
Dr Sheryl Smithies, a top Cape Town based aesthetic dental surgeon and facial aesthetic practitioner shares some light on various options available to help combat facial ageing.
1. Fixing your Jaw will Fix your Face
spa therapies
One often overlooked aspect of facial aging is the gradual decrease in the size of the jawbone, which leads to shifting of teeth to accommodate the diminishing space in our mouths. Over the years, this can result in teeth becoming crooked and misaligned, affecting the overall harmony of the face.
Added to this, is the gradual wearing down of the surface of our teeth due to natural wear and tear caused by eating, grinding, and clenching. This causes our teeth to become shorter, chipped, and worn.
Dr. Sheryl Smithies explains that rejuvenating teeth bonding, or veneers, can effectively rebuild the worn-off areas of teeth, restoring their youthful appearance and by adding a tooth whitening treatment, your smile can be elevated to a level that is both appealing and brighter.
“With advancements in technology, treatments like this can be entirely non-invasive, bonding directly to the natural tooth structure without causing any damage.”
Dr. Smithies emphasised that these dental issues can contribute to older faces appearing miserable, tired, sad, or unhappy, conveying a range of negative emotions that do not reflect an individual's true feelings.
2. It’s Never Too Late to Align Your Teeth.
To prevent a sagging and older-looking face, Dr. Smithies advises individuals to consider clear aligner therapy teeth therapy as a preventive measure.“By aligning teeth at various intervals throughout your life, you can maintain the proper positioning of teeth within the face and potentially reverse the aging process on the bone structure, promoting better quality bones and teeth. It can also improve a changing smile by reversing the effects of aging and placing the teeth in a more youthful position.”
Important to note is that aligners do not weaken the strength of teeth. When planned correctly, they can position teeth in a way that prevents damage from a crowded bite and the discreet nature of aligners makes them the least noticeable orthodontic option.
“While minor discomfort may be experienced during the initial three days and whenever aligners are
Mewing: The DIY Facial Reconstructing Technique
changed, it can typically be alleviated with overthe-counter painkillers,” adds Dr. Smithies, who suggests considering anti-aging dental alignments at any age, especially if teeth are shifting or in a narrowed or crowded position.
3. Don’t Discount Other Options
In addition to teeth alignment, there are other options available to reduce the effects of facial aging, such as face sculpting with fillers. This technique helps restore lost facial volume, providing subtle and tasteful results that go unnoticed.
The use of threads and other biostimulators have also gained popularity in retro-aging treatments. These products stimulate the body's collagen production and supporting aging skin.
Consistent use can lead to thicker and stronger skin, effectively reversing the aging process. Threads also have the added benefit of lifting sagging skin and promoting the growth of larger collagen threads beneath the skin.
4. Finally, Don’t Be Too Late To The Party
Neglecting dental and facial care as we age can lead to severe issues such as tooth crowding, difficulty maintaining oral hygiene, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) damage, tooth decay, and gum disease. Dr. Sheryl Smithies advises individuals to have their dentist assess the position of their teeth as they grow older.
Finally, Dr. Smithies warns that allowing the natural aging process to proceed without intervention can reach a point where it becomes challenging to reverse the effects with less invasive treatments.“To maintain one's appearance as much as possible, it is crucial to take proactive steps before it becomes too late to achieve desirable results easily.”
In conclusion, facial symmetry plays a crucial role in defining the anti-aging appearance of individuals, and dentistry offers a range of solutions for enhancing facial harmony and rejuvenating the overall aesthetic. Through orthodontic treatment, dental restorations, and cosmetic procedures, dentists can address malocclusion, restore missing or damaged teeth, and sculpt a more balanced smile, ultimately revitalizing the face and promoting a more youthful and vibrant appearance.

Mewing has garnered attention as a DIY facial reconstructing technique purported to sculpt and redefine the jawline through tongue posture. The premise is simple: by keeping the tongue pressed firmly against the roof of the mouth, individuals aim to encourage proper oral posture and potentially influence the development of facial aesthetics over time.
Advocates of mewing assert that by maintaining constant pressure from the tongue against the roof of the mouth, individuals can encourage forward growth of the maxilla (upper jaw) and mandible (lower jaw). This, in turn, may contribute to a more prominent jawline, improved alignment of the teeth, and a balanced facial profile.
However, it's important to approach mewing with a critical eye. While anecdotal evidence and before-and-after photos abound on social media and internet forums, scientific research supporting the efficacy of mewing remains limited. The extent to which tongue posture alone can influence facial structure is still a subject of debate among healthcare professionals.
Moreover, mewing may not be suitable for everyone. Individuals with certain pre-existing conditions, such as temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders or obstructive sleep apnea, should exercise caution before attempting mewing, as it could potentially exacerbate underlying issues
INTERVIEW: Healing Through Food with Australia's Spa Chef, Samantha Gowing
Known as the “spa chef of Australia”, Samantha Gowing is a therapeutic chef, motivational mentor and an award-winning clinical nutritionist helping to spearhead the “food as medicine” philosophy at many of the world’s luxury spas
There seems to be so much more awareness about the importance of healing cuisine and nutrition as key to wellness – in your opinion, what is driving the trend?
The last few years have been marked by a nearhysterical obsession with the next superfood or diet
Spa Cuisine
trend. As Michael Pollan observed, what we eat has changed more in the last 40 years than it has in the previous 40,000. The trend-chasing, “I-sawit-on-Instagram” eating needs to stop. We need to be restored to sane, nutritious, clean, local, personally intuitive foods – and to eating as pleasure: you can skip the kale if you want. Too many superfoods are on a collision course with sustainability. We’re wildly importing chia seeds, quinoa, goji berries, coconut, maca, agave (you name it) from all around the world, and it means our food-trendiness is disturbing global agricultural ecosystems.
Your wellness company crafts healing cuisine for luxury hotels, spas and health retreats –can you tell us some of the brands you have worked with and a little more about what you do?
Gowings Food Health Wealth was founded in 2000. My unique Surf Spa Food programme is handcrafted to service the niche in the global marketplace for a spa-cuisine specialist in the booming arena of luxury-lifestyle retreats, health spas and elegant beach resorts. Benefits to the industry include intensive one-on-one training in the healing cuisines, exclusive cooking demonstrations, conference presentations, staff training and induction, ready-to-go spa-food menus, management of financial systems and kitchen-service templates. As the founding head chef and clinical nutritionist for Cabarita Ocean Health Retreat, I put food as medicine on the spa-resort map in Australia. In
addition, I have had the great pleasure of consulting with leading wellness destinations and in-house spas including Grand Hyatt Melbourne; Gwinganna Lifestyle Retreat, Australia; The Four Seasons, Bali; Kempinski Zamani Resort, Zanzibar, Tanzania; Kahanda Kanda, Sri Lanka; and in Canada at Grail Springs in Bancroft, Ontario.
What are some of the interesting ways you have seen spas incorporate nutrition into their progra mmes, and have you noticed any emerging trends?
The line is becoming more and more blurred between spa ingredients and what’s on the menu – I love this! Seaweed-and-vanilla infused body scrubs for example, and turmeric tonics on arrival are just some of the ways food as medicine is creeping back into the clinic space. After all, it has been around for centuries. The natural cosmetic and nutraceutical companies are becoming hyperaware that what resort guests are feeding their skin is just as important as their body nutrition.
What is the most effective path for anyone hoping to heal through nutrition?
The future of health food is eating what you’re with – turning to our own backyards for fresh, naturally produced foods – because all clean foods have power and it’s the only regimen we need. The future means more proof of authenticity, nutritional claims and sustainability about what we eat and drink –and a welcome relaxing of our food histrionics.

Six Senses Vana - Dehradun, India
In recent years, Six Senses has emerged as one of the biggest players in the wellness space. Last year, the brand acquired a five-star ashram in India and transformed the 21-acre property into the first Six Senses retreat. Tucked within a forest of sal trees in the Himalayan Foothills near Rishikesh, the birthplace of yoga, the 82-room retreat offers five-, 14-, and 21-day programs rooted in Ayurveda, Chinese Medicine, and the Tibetan medicine practice of Sowa Rigpa. Your days might include four types of yoga, meditation, a mountain bathing session, where you'll be guided on a mindful hike, and nutritious meals (flavorful curries and fresh salads) determined by your dosha. If you can part with your comfy linen kurta pajamas for a day, it's worth venturing off-property on excursions, like a jungle safari in Rajaji National Park or a visit to Rishikesh for a private Aarti ceremonial ritual.
Recommended experience: Performed by Therapists who trained at the Dalai Lama's Tibetan Medical and Astro Institute administer Sowa Rigpa therapies such as dhugs, a treatment involving the compression of medicinal ingredients to parts of the body to release energy blockages and improve circulation.
Hemlock Neversink - Sullivan, New York
Situated in a quiet corner on the Catskills on the former campus of a New Age health spa, Hemlock Neversink is part adult camp, part health getaway. The 34-room retreat takes a playful approach to wellbeing, with quirky offerings like therapeutic hikes with the resident goats and terrarium workshops led by the hotel's director of gardens. Set on 230 woodsy acres, guests are encouraged to work up a sweat on the property's six miles of hiking trails and outdoor tennis courts. A dedicated movement building hosts classes like yoga nidra and offers one-onone personal training, while the spa taps into local ingredients for treatments ranging from detoxifying body wraps to energizing massages. Food is a highlight here. Bittersweet restaurant's plant-forward, multi-course dinner menu features flavourful dishes like roasted persimmon with cashew and Thai basil and ricotta dumplings with spinach and Nasturtium.
Recommended experience: The return to nature body treatment starts with a berry seed and white peat exfoliation, followed by a mask of organic mushrooms, helichrysum blossoms, and berry oils to promote cellular turnover and reduce inflammation. You'll conclude with a bath laced with calming salts and birch extracts.
Murrieta Hot Springs Resort - California
When Murietta Hot Springs opened in 1902, it quickly became the respite of choice for southern
spa therapies
Californians. The storied resort located between L.A. and San Diego re-opened in February after a 30-year-closure and history is certain to repeat itself thanks to re-imagined facilities, including a spa that focuses on traditional hydrothermal treatments, a wine bar and restaurants, plus a fitness center that offers creative classes like aqua sound bathing. A steam room, panoramic sauna, cold plunge, and terra thermal mud loft are housed in the historic bathhouse. But the steamy, mineral-rich waters remain the main draw. More than 50 geothermal pools, cold plunges, and water features are scattered across the 46-acre property.
Day passes are available, but overnight guests get 24-hour hot springs access and can upgrade to specially designed Sleep Rooms with Bryte Balance beds and ambient soundscapes machines.
Recommended experience: After a soak, enjoy the spa for a super hydrating honey-avocado body treatment.
Estelle Manor - Oxfordshire, UK
Stress dissipates as soon as you turn down the perfectly manicured, tree-lined drive to arrive at Estelle Manor, a 60-acre estate perched on the Cotswolds' doorstep and surrounded by 3,000 acres of gardens and parkland. The countryside sibling of Maison Estelle, a chic members' club in London's Mayfair neighborhood, is part country club, part hotel, complete with padel courts, bike paths, and a cutting-edge gym that offers 37 classes.
At the heart of the property is a Jacobean Revival manor house that's been fabulously restored with period elements like ornamental plaster ceilings and an impressive selection of contemporary art and antiques.
But the Eynsham Baths are the real showstopper. Tucked away in the forest, this nearly 32,300 square foot wellness sanctuary was inspired by ancient Roman bathhouses. Ten treatment rooms offer therapies ranging from IV vitamin drips and the Skin Design London Facelift to Tibetan Ku Nye massage and reflexology. There's also a hammam, rasul, dedicated breath work pool, and a contrast therapy circuit.
Recommended experience: The 180-minute guided Thermal Journey moves guests between six different thermal areas, from a frigidarium to caldarium, tepidarium to hay sauna, stimulating the body's immune system and metabolic rate, while simultaneously soothing the nervous system.

Gone are the days of onesize-fits-all approaches; clients now receive personalized experiences that cater to their unique needs and circumstances.
The benefits of informed data extend beyond customization. It fosters a deeper understanding of individual health concerns and goals, allowing practitioners to optimize outcomes. Whether managing chronic pain, stress-related ailments, or skin conditions, practitioners gain insights to inform treatment decisions. Moreover, centralizing health data within a secure platform upholds confidentiality and professionalism, enhancing trust and loyalty among clientele.
Facilitating collaboration between clients and practitioners is one of the software's most compelling aspects. Through detailed intake forms and ongoing updates, clients can effectively communicate their evolving health needs and preferences. This transparent exchange fosters a sense of partnership
and empowerment, allowing clients to actively participate in their wellness journey. Tracking treatment progress and feedback over time enables spas to adapt services, ensuring continuous improvement and client satisfaction.
Informed data also serves as a valuable tool for risk management and compliance. By flagging contraindications and potential interactions, practitioners mitigate the risk of adverse reactions and uphold safety standards. Built-in safeguards for data privacy and regulatory compliance help spas navigate legal complexities with confidence, safeguarding both client trust and business integrity.
From a business standpoint, informed data offers numerous opportunities for growth and differentiation. Leveraging client insights and preferences, spas can develop targeted marketing campaigns and loyalty programs that resonate with their target audience. Demonstrating a commitment to personalized care and wellness attracts discerning clientele, distinguishing businesses in a competitive market landscape.
Looking ahead, the potential for informed data is limitless. As technology evolves, so too will its capabilities. From predictive analytics to augmented reality experiences, the future of spa bookings promises to be dynamic and immersive. However, amidst these advancements, one thing remains constant - the enduring appeal of personalized care and holistic wellness.
Lastly, providing clients with informed data from their health profiles can be incredibly motivating and empowering. When clients can see tangible evidence of their progress and improvements over time, it reinforces their commitment to their health journey and encourages them to continue their efforts.
Incorporating informed data enhances the relationship between clients and health professionals. It fosters a sense of collaboration and trust, as clients feel supported and guided on their journey to better health. As a result, they are more likely to stay engaged, increase the frequency of visits, and continue making positive changes.
In conclusion, informed data booking software represents a paradigm shift in the spa and salon industry, empowering practitioners to deliver tailored experiences prioritizing client well-being and satisfaction. By harnessing the power of data, spas and salons elevate their services, fostering deeper connections and lasting impressions. As the demand for personalized care rises, informed data stands poised to redefine the future of wellness experiences.

Allow me to delve deeper into the essence of #MagentaNature and explore the pillars that will serve as guiding principles for our brand activations and events throughout the year.”
Belgin Aksoy Global Wellness Day Founder
What Is #MagentaNature?
#MagentaNature is the heart of Global Wellness Day 2024. It revolves around the central idea of reconnecting with nature.
We believe that a harmonious connection with the natural world is essential for overall well-being. To us, nature is not just a place; it's an experience that nurtures physical, mental, and spiritual health.
What Is Our Purpose?
As we stand on the threshold of 2024, we find ourselves amidst a tapestry of new hopes and persistent global challenges. The world, in its journey of recovery from the pandemic, grapples with economic uncertainties and conflicts that shape the course of our shared existence.
While the challenges are formidable, we must acknowledge that we may not alter the world's entire trajectory. However, within our individual spheres, we possess the extraordinary power to effect transformative change.
In the year 2024, Global Wellness Day takes on this mantle of transformative influence, steering our collective focus towards meaningful and impactful endeavors.
In essence, Global Wellness Day in 2024 is not just a celebration; it is a call to action, an invitation for individuals to actively participate in their own wellbeing and contribute to a harmonious relationship with the world around us.
Together, let us embark on this transformative journey towards a healthier, more connected, and naturecentric existence.
MagentaNature Philosophy
Imagine strolling through a magenta-tinged forest, where the rustle of leaves and the song of birds are harmonized with the pulsating energy of a transformed palette. Nature's voice becomes louder, more captivating, and impossible to ignore. The magenta hues demand attention, whispering tales of a world waiting to be explored, inviting everyone to participate in the dance of #MagentaNature.
This is more than a color change; it's a movement, a visual revolution that challenges perceptions and encourages a fresh perspective on the world. #MagentaNature is a celebration of diversity, a reminder that even in a world often painted in green, there is room for vibrant, unconventional beauty.
In this story, we urge you to step into a world where the ordinary transforms into the extraordinary, where magenta becomes the lens through which we rediscover the wonders of nature. It's a story of
attention, transformation, and reconnection – a tale written in the vivid strokes of #MagentaNature.
