The global wellness industry is poised to undergo a transformative shift in 2025, driven by a variety of emerging trends that reflect a deeper understanding of health, well-being, and sustainable living. The Global Wellness Summit (GWS) and the Global Wellness Institute (GWI) have identified key wellness trends that will influence not only the wellness sector but also broader industries across the globe. These trends highlight how self-care, technology, and social change are intersecting to reshape the way people approach health and wellness.
Below are the top wellness trends to watch for in 2025:
In an era dominated by digital technologies and constant connectivity, the concept of "analog wellness" is gaining significant traction. The rise of this trend reflects a collective yearning for a simpler, more tactile way of life—one that allows individuals to step away from screens and reconnect with the
physical world. As digital distractions contribute to stress and anxiety, many people are turning to more offline experiences for respite.
Analog wellness encompasses activities such as listening to vinyl records, reading physical books, using old-school cameras, and engaging in crafts like painting or pottery. This trend also involves engaging in mindfulness practices that promote mental health, like journaling, drawing, and unplugging from technology. Wellness retreats designed around these offline experiences are gaining popularity, offering guests the chance to disconnect completely and rediscover the therapeutic benefits of simplicity and stillness.
In 2025, this trend is expected to expand, with wellness centers and travel destinations providing immersive offline experiences where technology takes a backseat to personal connection, creativity, and mindfulness. As more people become aware of the mental and emotional toll of constant digital exposure, analog wellness is likely to continue growing in importance.
The sauna is experiencing a revival, with a modern twist that appeals to a younger, more diverse audience. While saunas have been a staple of wellness practices in Nordic and Russian cultures for centuries, their reinvention as multi-sensory, immersive experiences is transforming the way we think about relaxation. Around the world, new sauna concepts are incorporating art, technology, and community to create unique experiences that cater to modern wellness needs.
In cities like Tokyo, saunas are evolving into immersive art installations, where light, sound, and heat are combined to enhance the therapeutic effects of the traditional steam bath. Floating saunas on lakes in Australia provide a serene, nature-infused environment for rejuvenation, while urban saunas in New York City offer social spaces where relaxation and community bonding take center stage.
These reimagined saunas go beyond just physical
relaxation—they foster emotional healing, creativity, and a deeper sense of connection. As wellness becomes more experiential, saunas will continue to evolve, offering visitors a sensory journey that integrates art, technology, and personal well-being. The sauna renaissance highlights a broader shift towards holistic and immersive wellness practices.
The wellness supplement industry is booming, valued at over $45 billion in 2023 in the U.S. alone. However, the growth of this sector has also highlighted significant challenges related to product safety, transparency, and efficacy. The "Supplement Paradox" describes the tension between the demand for highly personalized supplements and the credibility issues that plague the industry.
Consumers are increasingly seeking supplements that are tailored to their individual health needs, based on factors such as genetics, lifestyle, and wellness goals. With the rise of AI, biotechnology, and personalized health assessments, supplements are becoming more precise in their ability to optimize specific aspects of health, from metabolism to cellular aging.
However, inconsistent regulatory oversight and the prevalence of unverified claims have created confusion and mistrust among consumers. In 2025, the trend will shift toward scientifically validated, data-driven supplements that are backed by research and transparent sourcing. This will help restore consumer confidence, enabling individuals to make more informed decisions about their health.
As the wellness industry expands, there is an increasing focus on addressing the needs of younger generations. Teen wellness is gaining significant attention, driven by growing awareness of the mental health challenges facing teenagers, particularly in the digital age. Platforms like TikTok and beauty brands like Sephora are influencing teen culture, creating a space where self-care and emotional well-being are prioritized.
In 2025, wellness initiatives tailored specifically to teens will become more prominent. These programs will focus on building resilience, self-esteem, and emotional intelligence, helping teens navigate the pressures of adolescence with confidence and awareness. Wellness retreats and mental health apps targeting teens will offer stress management techniques, mindfulness practices, and tools to cope with digital pressures.
With the rise of social media and its impact on mental health, teen wellness will likely become a central focus of the wellness industry, with a growing number of products and services designed to empower young people to prioritize their mental, emotional, and physical well-being.
Water scarcity is one of the most pressing challenges facing the planet today, and by 2050, nearly 70% of the world’s population is expected to live in urban areas. The wellness industry, which has long
been associated with luxury water-based treatments and spa experiences, is now beginning to respond to the global water crisis with innovative, sustainable practices.
"Watershed Wellness" refers to the wellness sector’s efforts to reduce its environmental impact by adopting water-saving technologies and promoting responsible water use. This includes incorporating water-efficient spa treatments, rainwater harvesting systems, and sustainable water practices in wellness destinations and resorts.
In 2025, wellness brands will continue to innovate with water-conscious solutions that conserve resources while providing guests with meaningful wellness experiences. From eco-friendly spas to water-centered wellness practices that raise awareness about sustainability, the wellness industry is taking steps to address water conservation in meaningful ways.
The future of health optimization lies at the intersection of biology and technology, and in 2025, we’ll see further advances in wearable tech, brain-computer interfaces, and other bio-enhancing innovations. These technologies aim to augment human physical and cognitive performance, opening up new possibilities for health and well-being.
Wearable devices like exoskeletons are helping individuals improve muscle strength and mobility, while brain-computer interfaces are offering groundbreaking opportunities for mental health optimization and cognitive enhancement. Companies such as Neuralink are exploring how brain implants can be used to treat neurological conditions, boost cognitive abilities, and even enhance mental performance.
This trend, known as "augmented biology," represents the next frontier of wellness. In 2025, technology will continue to unlock new ways to optimize human health, creating personalized solutions that enhance both physical and cognitive capabilities.
As life expectancy rises, the workforce is aging, and more individuals over the age of 65 are remaining active in their careers. This demographic shift presents new opportunities and challenges for businesses and governments to support older workers with wellness programs that promote health, productivity, and well-being.
In 2025, companies will need to invest in ageinclusive wellness strategies that support the physical, mental, and emotional needs of older employees. This may include offering fitness programs designed for older workers, ergonomic office designs, and policies that encourage intergenerational collaboration.
As the aging population continues to grow, wellness initiatives tailored to older employees will become increasingly important to maintain a productive
and healthy workforce. The rise of longevity-focused wellness will reshape the way businesses think about employee health and well-being.
The wellness industry is increasingly expanding into the realm of addiction recovery, offering innovative solutions that focus on harm reduction and longterm healing. From nicotine-free alternatives to groundbreaking mental health treatments like Stellate Ganglion Block (SGB), wellness brands are helping individuals regain control of their lives and manage addiction more effectively.
In 2025, we will see more wellness centers and recovery programs blending therapeutic treatments such as yoga, meditation, and sound therapy with medical interventions to support individuals in their recovery journey. These holistic approaches to addiction recovery focus on the mind-body connection, promoting healing and wellness from a more integrated perspective.
Wellness is no longer confined to retreats and resorts—it is now extending to cruise ships and rail journeys. In 2025, expect to see more cruise lines and rail operators embracing holistic wellness programs that allow travelers to rejuvenate while on the move. These experiences will feature activities like yoga, fitness classes, and meditation sessions, as well as healthy cuisine and relaxation options.
By offering wellness experiences during travel, the wellness industry is expanding the concept of selfcare beyond traditional settings, creating new opportunities for people to prioritize their health and well-being during travel.
The Middle East is rapidly emerging as a global wellness leader, with countries like Saudi Arabia and the UAE investing heavily in wellness infrastructure. The region is blending cultural heritage with modern technology, offering wellness experiences that range from high-tech wellness centers to traditional desert retreats.
In 2025, the Middle East’s focus on wellness will continue to grow, with new resorts and wellness initiatives that emphasize sustainability and wellbeing. The region’s growing influence in the wellness sector will help shape the future of global wellness, positioning the Middle East as a key player in the wellness industry’s evolution.
These trends highlight the ongoing evolution of the wellness industry as it adapts to the needs and challenges of the modern world. From the rise of analog wellness and augmented biology to the growing emphasis on teen wellness and sustainable practices, the future of wellness is one of innovation, inclusivity, and mindful living. As we look toward 2025, these trends will continue to shape how individuals approach their health, well-being, and quality of life.
With 2025 in full flight, the spa industry is on the cusp of transformation. The market is dynamic, driven by consumer demands for more personalized, innovative, and sustainable wellness experiences. Spa operators now have a unique opportunity to embrace these changes and propel their businesses to new heights. From adapting to evolving customer preferences to strategically investing in innovation and experience, the future of the spa industry is rich with promise for those willing to take bold steps.
Here are my insights and strategies for achieving success in your spa business in 2025.
In 2025, spa customers are more informed than ever. They have access to an overwhelming amount of wellness information and expect a higher level of expertise and personalization in their spa experiences. In a world of endless options, innovation becomes the driving force to capture their attention and loyalty.
Many spa operators still stick to traditional approaches, which may no longer resonate with the modern consumer. As a result, it's crucial to break free from the status quo. This doesn't mean reinventing the wheel, but it does mean differentiating your offerings. Innovating doesn't have to be a huge, risky gamble-it can be as simple as improving customer service, experimenting with new wellness trends, or introducing unique treatments that aren't widely available in your market.
The key here is to take calculated risks. Don't simply copy what others are doing. Understand your customer demographic and their needs, and then offer them something new and tailored. Whether it's incorporating the latest wellness technology,
adding more sustainable, eco-friendly products, or offering bespoke treatments based on personalized health data, your spa can stand out by consistently evolving to meet your customers' desires.
Investing in expert consultancy can be highly beneficial. Surround yourself with people who know the wellness and spa industry inside and out-people who can guide you in making smart, strategic decisions. This knowledge will help you avoid the trap of simply copying competitors and instead empower you to build something authentic and aligned with your clientele's expectations.
In the competitive world of wellness, offering a great product or service is no longer enough. The customer journey and experience have become as important as the treatments themselves. Your customers want a holistic, seamless experience from start to finish. They want to feel valued, pampered, and catered to throughout their visit.
To truly succeed, spa operators must invest time-not just money-into refining every aspect of the customer experience. Start by mapping out the entire customer journey, from the moment a guest books an appointment to when they leave your spa. Is it easy to book? Is your website intuitive? Are the treatment options clearly communicated? What does the previsit communication look like, and how are clients greeted upon arrival? Every detail matters.
Focusing on these seemingly small details will create a memorable experience that keeps customers coming back. Moreover, personalizing the experience by understanding each guest's preferences and needs will go a long way in ensuring satisfaction. For instance, using customer data (with their consent) to customize treatments, spa packages, or even aftercare recommendations shows you value their individuality.
Additionally, think beyond the treatment rooms. Creating inviting and relaxing atmospheres throughout your space, such as a beautiful waiting area, mood lighting, music, and relaxaion areas, can significantly enhance the overall customer experience.
To thrive in 2025, spa operators must invest not just in their operations but also in building strong networks. Whether it's connecting with other wellness professionals, engaging with influencers, or collaborating with like-minded businesses, partnerships can help you expand your reach and improve your offerings.
By building a community of supporters, your spa can grow organically while fostering brand loyalty.
Spa operators have a unique opportunity to redefine their businesses and thrive in an ever-changing market. Innovation, a focus on customer experience, sustainability, the integration of technology, and strategic networking are the key pillars that will drive success. Embrace these changes, invest in your business, and most importantly, take bold steps to create an experience that's truly one of a kind. The spa industry's future is bright for those who are willing to evolve with the times and meet the needs of today's informed, conscious, and ever-demanding consumers. The opportunity to thrive is within reachnow is the time to act.

It is commonly said that when it comes to wellness, the United States "takes the lead" in the market. It is no coincidence that the Global Wellness Summit, an annual survey of major trends in wellnessparticularly in the hospitality sector-is organized by the Global Wellness Institute, which is 100% North American.
To understand the power of spas in America and identify what could be integrated into theSouth African hotel spa market, I spoke with Christelle Fourcade - Yon-Ka brand, Global Director of Business Development in Hospitality.
Our fascinating exchange allowed me to retain key verbatim statements, product and care trends, and analyze their potential application in internationally, with practical advice. This conversation also helped me understand why hotel spas are a “machine” in the United States, while they are still struggling in other counties.
“Today, all hotels have their 'star' devices. The most common are the Hydrafacial and the Intraceuticals facial oxygenation machine. Unlike France, where I noticed some of these treatments are still sold separately, in the U.S., all cosmetic brands create protocols that integrate the machine available in the hotel. In some cases, it is even a condition for bringing in a brand.”
How to adapt it Internationally?
Devices are becoming increasingly common in hotel spas, allowing you to:
•Differentiate your offer from the competition.
• Offer more effective treatments in terms of results.
However, the choice of equipment is still often random, motivated either by a persuasive salesperson or by the appeal of novelty. As a result, the device may not fit your offering and can be difficult to sell effectively.
My advice:
• Treat your equipment selection as part of your overall offering.
• Challenge equipment manufacturers to explain how their machines can integrate into your spa
• Don't hesitate to ask your cosmetic brand for a specific treatment protocol that includes the device.
“Please note, the goal is not to replace spa therapists but to offer a different, complementary massage experience. For instance, Aescape has developed a robotic massage table that adjusts to customer preferences, offering a more personalized massage and promising the same effectiveness in 30 minutes as a traditional 60-minute massage. Americans love trends and innovations. They don't replace old methods but rather create additional experiences. They want to feel that the offer is constantly evolving and bringing them something new... For hotel spas, this allows them to stay current with trends.”
Another trend in hands-free technologies is the use of cold treatments like cryotherapy and cold plunges. This involves complete immersion in ice water to experience the benefits of alternating hot and cold
temperatures. This trend is already becoming popular in spas throughout the world, with the Wim Hof method and individual wellness enthusiasts.
In a market where massage remains the most requested treatment, and with high staff turnover, especially in high season, hands-free treatments can complement your spa offering.
My advice:
• Don't exclude 100% hands-free treatments from your menu. Depending on your spa's configuration (No of treatment rooms, team size, location, etc.), they can complement your traditional spa offerings.
• Before investing in equipment, ask yourself:
- What customer needs does this technology meet?
- Do my clients actually need it?
- Will this investment be profitable, and if so, when?
“Having several skincare brands is the most common configuration for spas in the U.S. The goal is to meet the diverse needs of their clientele: some prefer natural products, others go for organic, and some seek results-oriented treatments. The concept of an exclusive brand contract, which is still common in France and Internationally, doesn't exist here. As a brand, this is challenging because we could be dropped at any time, but it also makes it easier to enter a spa since they don't hesitate to start with a single treatment, and if customers like it, they may choose the rest of the range.”
What matters most is the result
In the U.S., customers are not particularly sensitive
to the nationality of the brand. Yes, they appreciate the idea of a brand coming from France, but what matters most is effectiveness, visible anti-aging, hydration, or radiance.
My advice:
• As a spa, don't hesitate to offer pop-up storetype transactions with brands that meet your current or potential customer needs. A 3- to 6-month trial period can help you gather real insights.
• As a brand, adapt your marketing approach to reach a larger audience. The more exposure you have, the better your chances of converting them into customers.
“In the U.S., memberships are widespread. For a yearly fee, non-resident guests can access spa facilities such as the sauna, hammam, pool, gym, fitness classes, and yoga. Their membership often includes a monthly facial or 60-minute massage and discounts on additional treatments and products (usually between 10% and 15%). Memberships help compensate for the variable hotel occupancy rates, especially from Monday to Friday, when conference attendees may not use the spa. Unlike international markets, American hotels don't prioritize capturing hotel guests for the spa but focus on promoting membership as a product to drive profitability.”
How to adapt?
Memberships are an underestimated spa offering. Despite their success in the U.S., membership at hotel spas often evokes hesitation due to fears that
too many members will affect the overall experience for hotel guests.
My advice:
• Stop associating memberships with only luxury hotels. Look at your spa's attendance figures and estimate how many additional guests you could accommodate. You can start small and adjust as you go.
• Communicate the benefits of membership to potential clients to increase its social appeal and profitability.
“In the U.S., a hotel has a spa to make money, not because it's a necessity. In France particularly, spas are often seen as secondary, something added to attract customers but without a clear income expectation. In the U.S., the spa's profitability is a key factor, and spa directors are involved in the management committee, alongside F&B and accommodation managers. They communicate effectively, analyze their actions, and adjust quickly.”
How to adapt?
Unfortunately, many hoteliers don't expect specific income from their spa, leading to underinvestment. Spa managers are often left with the challenge of generating revenue while being given limited resources.
My advice:
Spa managers should take the time to analyze key performance indicators (KPIs), such as turnover, customer capture rates, and fixed/variable costs.
By proposing data-driven action plans, spa managers can help shift the focus toward making the spa a profitable part of the hotel.
While certain trends in U.S. hotel spas seem far from the French or International market, the five key trends discussed above offer promising insights that could help hotel spas elevate their offerings. With continued adaptation and collaboration between hoteliers, brands, and spa managers, these strategies could make the spa a central pillar of the hotel experience, alongside accommodation and F&B. The journey may be long, but the potential is great.

The spa world is experiencing a fresh, exciting transformation, and it's all thanks to some incredible, timeless ingredients that are making a major comeback. Spirulina, algae, and seaweed-these oceanic wonders have been used for centuries in traditional healing, but now, they're taking center stage in some of the most popular spa treatments and wellness routines. From luxurious facials to rejuvenating body wraps, these ingredients are more than just a trend; they're the future of self-care, blending age-old wisdom with modern spa experiences. Whether you're looking for hydration, detoxification, or just an extra glow, these oceanderived powerhouses have you covered.
Why are spirulina, algae, and seaweed becoming so popular now? Well, for starters, they're packed with everything your body and skin need to feel and look amazing. Think antioxidants, essential vitamins, and minerals that work wonders for hydration, detoxification, and even slowing down those pesky signs of aging. These ingredients are rich in nutrients like vitamin C, calcium, iodine, and magnesium, all of which help to nourish and support the body's natural functions. So, it's no surprise that they're showing up in everything from facials to body wraps. What's even better is that they're completely natural and sustainable-two qualities that make them a go-to for today's eco-conscious consumers.
Whether you're in the mood for a relaxing seaweed body wrap to boost circulation and smooth your skin or a spirulina-packed facial to brighten up your complexion, there's a treatment out there that can
meet all your skin and body goals. Imagine feeling the stress melt away as you unwind in a warm seaweed-infused bath, or relaxing during a facial that not only hydrates but also fights the signs of aging at the same time. These treatments aren't just about the immediate relaxation; they're designed to leave you with long-lasting results. Plus, don't forget about the benefits of incorporating algae and spirulina into your diet. These ingredients are popping up in everything from smoothies to wellness shots, offering that extra nutrient boost to keep your glow going from the inside out. A little spirulina in your morning smoothie or a shot of algae-based goodness can give you that energy kick while nurturing your skin and overall health.
What's particularly exciting about these ingredients is how modern spas are using them in creative, innovative ways. Gone are the days of just simple seaweed wraps-today's spas are incorporating spirulina and algae into a wide variety of treatments that offer both relaxation and real results. Take, for example, a hot stone massage infused with seaweed oils. The warmth of the stones helps ease muscle tension and stress, while the seaweed oil works its magic to nourish your skin. It's the perfect combination of relaxation and skin rejuvenation. Or picture yourself sinking into a thermal bath enriched with algae, the warm water soothing your body while the algae works to detoxify and hydrate your skin, leaving you feeling refreshed and completely revitalized. These treatments are designed to bring balance to your mind, body, and spirit, giving you the ultimate wellness experience.
Even when you leave the spa, these magical oceanbased ingredients don't have to disappear from your routine. Many spas now offer take-home products. With just a few simple additions to your daily regimen, you can continue to benefit from their powerful properties, keeping your skin glowing long after your visit. Whether it's a seaweed-infused lotion to hydrate your skin or spirulina-based bath salts to unwind after a long day, these products are a great way to keep the spa experience going in the comfort of your own home.
But the benefits don't stop at skincare. If you're someone who's passionate about clean eating and fueling your body with the best ingredients, you're in luck. Spirulina and algae are popping up in all sorts of wellness foods and supplements. Spirulina powder is a popular addition to smoothies, giving them a vibrant green colour and a potent boost of nutrients. You can find algae-based wellness shots packed with vitamins and minerals, perfect for those looking to support their body from the inside out. These ingredients are rich in protein, antioxidants, and healthy fats, making them a great choice for anyone focused on both beauty and health.
In today's wellness world, self-care isn't just about pampering yourself for a day-it's about nourishing and supporting your body from every angle.
The pursuit of youthful, radiant skin often leads people in the singular direction of skincare treatments. Yet, the secret to truly glowing skin lies not in what we apply externally but in what we nourish our bodies with internally. A wealth of scientific evidence points to the transformative power of a whole-food, plantbased diet for skin health. By focusing on nutrientdense fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, nuts, and seeds, you can naturally achieve younger, more resilient skin, reduce inflammation, and protect against environmental damage.
Plant-based diets are abundant in antioxidants, compounds that combat oxidative stress and free radicals-two key contributors to premature aging. Free radicals, produced by environmental factors such as UV rays and pollution, damage collagen and elastin, leading to wrinkles and sagging skin. Antioxidants neutralise these harmful molecules, protecting skin at a cellular level.
• Vitamin C , is essential for collagen synthesis, which maintains skin firmness and elasticity. A study published in Nutrients (2017) highlighted how dietary vitamin C reduces wrinkle depth and improves skin texture.
•Beta-carotene, a precursor to vitamin A found in carrots, sweet potatoes, and spinach, helps repair skin and supports skin cell turnover. A 2012 study in the Journal of Nutrition showed that higher dietary beta-carotene intake results in more vibrant skin tones.
• Polyphenols, abundant in berries, green tea, and dark chocolate, protect against UV-induced skin aging. A review in Oxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity (2020) emphasized the photoprotective effects of polyphenols and their ability to prevent skin inflammation.
Chronic inflammation is a root cause of many skin issues, including acne, eczema, and psoriasis. The high concentration of anti-inflammatory compounds in plant-based foods helps calm redness, reduce swelling, and promote even skin tone.
• Omega-3 fatty acids in flaxseeds, walnuts, and chia seeds help regulate inflammation. Research in Advances in Dermatology and Allergology (2020) found that omega-3s improve conditions like dermatitis.
• Flavonoids in colourful fruits and vegetables, such
as blueberries and kale, inhibit pro-inflammatory pathways, reducing redness and puffiness.
• Curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, has potent anti-inflammatory properties, calming irritated skin and speed up healing.
Phytonutrients, plant compounds that support health beyond basic nutrition, play a direct role in skin vitality and resilience against environmental stressors.
o Lycopene, a carotenoid found in tomatoes and watermelon, protects against UV damage. Studies published in the British Journal of Dermatology (2011) showed that lycopene consumption reduced sunburn severity and improved skin texture.
• Resveratrol, found in grapes, is a powerful antiaging compound. It stimulates collagen production and improves elasticity, according to research in Dermato-Endocrinology (2013).
The gut-skin axis highlights the profound link between gut health and skin clarity. A diet rich in fibre, a hallmark of plant-based eating, supports a diverse and balanced gut microbiome. This, in turn, reduces systemic inflammation and promotes healthy skin.
• Fibre in whole grains, beans, and vegetables acts as a prebiotic, feeding beneficial gut bacteria, which produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which regulate inflammation and strengthen the skin barrier.
• Fermented foods, such as kimchi, sauerkraut, and miso, provide probiotics that further enhance skin health by reducing inflammation.
Certain plant-based foods are especially potent in boosting skin health:
• Avocados: Rich in healthy fats and vitamin E, they hydrate skin and improve elasticity.
• Spinach: Packed with lutein and zeaxanthin, antioxidants that protect against blue light damage.
• Sweet Potatoes: High in beta-carotene, they provide a natural defence against UV damage.
• Walnuts: A powerhouse of omega-3s and zinc, which promote wound healing and reduce inflammation.
• Papaya: Contains papain, an enzyme that supports skin renewal and reduces pigmentation.
By Michelle Strydom - Spa Therapy
Multiple studies back the skin-rejuvenating benefits of plant-based diets. A 2021 review in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences found that diets high in fruits and vegetables were linked to lower wrinkle prevalence and improved hydration levels. Similarly, research published in JAMA Dermatology (2020) demonstrated that plant-based eaters have fewer signs of aging and better skin elasticity.
The benefits of a whole-food, plant-based diet extend beyond glowing skin. By reducing inflammation, improving gut health, and providing antioxidants, this lifestyle supports overall vitality, from heart health to mental clarity.
Switching to a plant-based diet isn't just a step toward better skin-it's a commitment to health and beauty. By choosing nutrient-dense, vibrant foods, you're not just feeding your body but cultivating radiance from within. To amplify these benefits, consider complementing your diet with plant-based skincare products that work in harmony with your skin's natural biology. Brands like AVRA's vegan skincare range harness the power of plant-derived ingredients, such as antioxidants, natural oils, and botanicals, to nourish and protect your skin from the outside in. Happiness is something we all want, and learning how to cultivate it for ourselves is deeply empowering. When we feel like our happiness is mostly dependent on external circumstances- how other people respond to us, whether things are going our way, the weather, the traffic-we can feel helpless to create and sustain our own inner sense of wellbeing. It's when we learn how to source our own joy from within by cultivating an empowered mindset that we begin to feel happier in our experience and more aware of how we can have some measure of control over our own baseline state.
The way we think is extremely important. The mindset you choose to cultivate will affect your entire life experience. Happiness is not a destination but rather an attitude that you choose to travel with.
Here are a few simple mindset tips for creating more joy, satisfaction, and fulfillment in your life:
Remember that life is not happening to you, it is happening for you.
When we interpret challenging things that happen as punishment or as being some indication of our worthiness, we put ourselves into a victim mindset that makes it very hard to be happy. However, when we ask ourselves, what might this experience be teaching me?, we enable ourselves to grow through life's challenges and enjoy that process of evolution. In every experience there is a golden
nugget that has the possibility of improving our life in the future-always look for it and allow yourself to navigate life's ups and downs with curiosity.
Think of things the way you want them to be.
So many of us pay attention to how things are in this moment and then spend our energy evaluating how much we like them or don't. Rather than doing that, ask yourself what the ideal situation looks like in this area of your life. Instead of belaboring your painful breakup, spend your mental energy imagining what being with your ideal partner would feel like. How would the relationship of your dreams feel to you? Start using your imagination to create a future in your mind that you're excited about. This is how we begin to create a life we actually love living in.
Pay attention to abundance, not lack.
Every subject is really two things: The presence and absence of that thing. When we think about money, for example, we could think about the money we have and feel grateful for what it provides us, or we could think about what we don't have. By feeling abundant (or rich) in an area of our life, we attract more abundance to us. Spend your mental energy being appreciative of all that you have in the specific area of your life that you would like to attract more (love, health, success, money, support, friendship). When you do this, you begin to make yourself magnetic to what you want.
The longest conversation we are ever going to have is the one we have with ourselves inside our head. That conversation is like a radio station that plays all day and forever-so make it a feel-good station, not a highly critical news program. Whenever you become aware of your inner critic being harsh or unkind, choose to come back to self-compassion. So many of us can be so compassionate with everyone else and so hard on ourselves. We create our own unhappiness with our own self-judgment and self-blame. When we choose to speak to ourselves more supportively, we enable ourselves to feel happy and succeed in our lives. When we choose to practice this regularly, we empower ourselves to create and sustain an inner wellbeing that we can take anywhere.
Practicing these mindset tips is a moment-by-moment choice, and it's like building a muscle. The more you do it, the easier it gets. As you begin to consciously reorient your mind in these ways, you will start to notice your life experience becoming lighter and happier. You will begin to see good things come into your life, and you will feel like you have more spaciousness and joy within you.
Happiness starts with us, and it is deeply empowering to be able to create it for ourselves.

2024 marked the emergence of numerous boutique hotel or urban spa projects internationally, despite a challenging economic context. The conclusion: the spa industry is evolving!
Here are 8 tips for your 2025 spa projects-ideas.
A successful spa project traditionally assumed a sufficient number of treatment rooms. The logic was clear: the majority of spa revenue comes from treatments, which are easy to sell (customers typically visit the spa for this purpose) and tend to be the most expensive. On paper, it makes sense: rooms = treatments = revenue.
The delicate profitability of treatments: It's been known the profitability of a treatment is fragile due to the high fixed costs associated with running a spa. Salaries for therapists, spa managers, receptionists, and other support staff weigh heavily on turnover. In many cases, turnover is still 90% dependent on treatments. These support roles are vital to the spa's operation, but the reality is they yields a lower margin compared to room revenue.
Limited rooms: Any investor knows that when unit margins are low, volume is key to generating attractive profitability, or in the case of a spa, selling a high volume of treatments. This is why the traditional reflex when designing a spa has been to increase the number of treatment rooms. More rooms = more treatment slots = easier revenue.
However, this dynamic has changed in recent years. The issue now is the difficulty of recruiting and stabilizing spa teams. The pandemic caused many therapists to leave the industry or transition to roles outside treatment rooms (spa managers, consultants, trainers, etc.). As a result, some spas are in a constant cycle of recruiting and facing high turnover, leading to unfilled positions and unsold treatment slots.
My advice: The trend doesn't seem to be reversing anytime soon. Spa projects planned for 2025 must account for this reality in their activity forecasts and adjust the number of treatment rooms accordingly, selling the collective spa experience and wellness investment, in contrast to previous practices.
In today's tight job market and with high salary costs for spa practitioners, hands-free treatments represent a real opportunity-provided you select the right ones.
Long overlooked and often dismissed by purists who swore by manual treatments, hands-free technology has become quite trendy. American spas, in particular, have embraced device-based treatments.
Be cautious about "must-have" purchases: Some spa owners have jumped on the trend and invested in hands-free devices. The problem is that such devices are often more of a "favourite" purchase than a thoughtful investment aligned with the spa's overall concept, treatment menu, or customer experience.
Ask yourself the right questions:
• Will you be able to sell this treatment to your current customers?
• If not, will require additional marketing efforts to attract new customers.
• Does the technology deliver results?
• Gather insights from industry colleagues who have used the equipment, rather than relying solely on the manufacturer's testimonials.
• What are the ongoing costs for consumables, and how often will you need to replenish them?
My advice: Don't underestimate the time required to fully evaluate and integrate hands-free treatments into your spa's offering. This could be a gamechanger for your profitability-both positive and negative.
The signature treatment is your spa's emblematic offering-the one customers can't find anywhere else and that should provide a unique experience. Typically, it is a slightly more expensive treatment with a higher perceived value.
In recent years, some professionals have moved away from signature treatments because they were difficult to sell regularly due to:
• Treatments that are too conceptual or complex, without appreciation of the spa logistics.
• The challenge of integrating signature treatments with the rest of the spa menu.
However, I believe signature treatments are essential in an increasingly competitive environment. A clear marketing positioning is crucial, and signature treatments help distinguish your spa. To make this work, your signature treatment must be:
• Easy to learn and perform by all therapists.
• Reproducible multiple times per day
• Easy for receptionists to sell to clients.
My advice: Avoid overly complex or physically demanding techniques. Focus on a clear, sellable message for the treatment. Keep the signature element simple but striking. Consider incorporating other sensory elements, like scent, ambiance, or a post-treatment snack, to reinforce the uniqueness of the experience.
In today's competitive market, you have the right to set your terms when negotiating partnerships. You can also work with multiple brands and integrate new ones alongside your main brand supplier if you identify a customer demand that the current brand doesn't meet.
My advice: Many skincare brands now offer flexible options, including pop-up shops, allowing you to test products with your customers. This shows that the brand is adaptable, aware of the competition, and confident in their products.
For a long time, the spa was treated as a separate product within the hotel, with little connection to other services like the kitchen. Spa managers would sometimes shy away from asking the kitchen for snacks to accompany treatments, as the kitchen staff often didn't understand the spa's role.
Well-being should be integrated with nutrition: Well-being now extends beyond treatments and includes nutritional offerings. Spas must contribute to this well-being by collaborating with the kitchen to offer:
• Post-treatment snacks
• A "wellness" menu with vegetarian/vegan options
• Signature culinary creations
• Well-being drinks like collagen-based beverages or fruit and vegetable detox cocktails
My advice: A collaborative effort between the spa manager and the chef is essential for providing a complete well-being experience in 2025.
For several years, we recommended limiting pool access to hotel guests to preserve the customer experience. However, the rarity of hotel pools means that non-residents may be willing to pay for regular access to your facilities. This can be structured as a membership model-one of the most profitable offerings for a spa.
My advice: Implementing a membership model generates recurring income with low operational costs. Offer membership with conditions, such as limited capacity (e.g., five members per month) or restricted hours (e.g., no access on weekends). This model can also serve as a useful learning experience if you later decide to expand your spa and explore other business opportunities.
7
Many still see the spa as a service exclusively for customers, but employees need well-being just as much (or more!). Why not offer them access to the pool or gym under certain conditions or as a reward for good performance? This could also apply to treatments for employees who achieve certain goals.
My advice: These measures should be occasional and not apply to everyone. However, in 2025, this will enhance your employer brand and contribute positively to your spa's image.
Hotel spas often rely on the hotel's website, and social media platforms for communication, which can bury spa-specific content among other hotelrelated information.
Why your spa needs its own social media presence: In an era where external customers are increasingly important for financial stability, it's crucial for the spa to have its own social media accounts. This will allow the spa to:
• Share last-minute availability
• Present new treatments
• Offer advice from your therapists
• Showcase the “feel-good” role your spa plays
My advice: Focus on quality over quantity when creating content. Prioritize relevant, informative posts and engage with your audience to convert them into paying customers. Social media will be an essential tool for acquiring new clients and boosting your spa's visibility.

In 2024, the aesthetics industry witnessed a remarkable transformation, characterised by an increased interest in treatments, many practices opening the door to aesthetic services and the adoption of new technologies.
According to a report by McKinsey and Company, medical aesthetics is currently undergoing a facelift; after experiencing a 7% loss in 2020, the industry is now booming, poised to grow by as much as 14 percent annually through 2026. To reiterate this sentiment, Dr Alek Nikolic notes “We experienced an increase in 2024, and I believe there are a number of factors driving this”.
Reflecting on these factors, Dr Alek explores the pivotal trends that were noted in the medical aesthetic industry in 2024, and he explores what the future may hold in 2025.
Dr Nikolic highlights several significant trends that have emerged this year:
1. Lip Enhancements: Lip enhancements continue to evolve, with new trends emerging that focus on natural enhancements, personalised aesthetics, and cutting-edge techniques. “Patients are seeking both subtle results and more dramatic enhancements. Whether you want a subtle enhancement or a more dramatic transformation, the focus is on crafting lips that are uniquely yours but should look natural and fir the ratios of ones face, “says Dr Nikolic.
2. Non-surgical Face Lifts: People are constantly seeking instant and gratifying results. While surgical treatments offer immediate, long-lasting results, it comes at a higher costs like potential scars and a longer downtime. Non-surgical methods such as soft tissue fillers and Profhilo are less invasive and more affordable, they achieve subtle enhancements but require ongoing maintenance. “With advancements in injectable techniques, we can achieve significant lifts without using excessive filler, which helps avoid the dreaded 'pillow face',” Dr Alek adds.
3. Behind The Filter: Social Media's impact Studies have shown that time spent on social media and the use of photo-editing applications and filters, correlates with a person's desire to undergo cosmetic procedures and increase in demand. Dr Alek adds,
“I have noticed that as people become more open about their aesthetic journeys online, the trend of using fewer filters has led to increased transparency about procedures and outcomes, making aesthetic enhancements feel more accessible and acceptable.”
4. Revolutionising Treatments With Technology: The introduction of handheld ultrasound devices has enhanced safety during procedures by allowing practitioners to visualise vascular structures in the face. “This technology not only improves safety but also ensures better placement of fillers,” notes Dr Nikolic. Important to note is the introduction of AI skincare analysis technology such as VISIA Skin Analysis, which harnesses the power of artificial intelligence to analyse various aspects of the skin which can provide a more accurate diagnosis.
Dr Alek Nikolic foresees several emerging trends that are set to shape the aesthetics industry in exciting ways. “First thing that immediately comes top of mind is the integrations of artificial intelligence (AI). Poised to transform treatment planning and care, by enhancing diagnostic accuracy, AI is already making a significant leap towards personalised beauty care.”
Alongside the technological advancements, established treatments such as botulinum toxin, dermal fillers, and laser technologies will continue to thrive as patients seek effective and reliable solutions. The focus on skin rejuvenation is also intensifying with a rising interest in advanced options like exosomes, polynucleotides, and stem cell-like injectables. These innovations are effective in transforming the cells of ageing skin into more youthful-appearing skin while providing more natural-looking results.
Lastly, there is a growing recognition of the connection between mental health and outer appearance. “Aesthetic interventions are not only approached from a physical perspective anymore but also with a keen understanding of their impact on emotional wellness,” Dr Nikolic adds. As patients become more proactive about their health and appearance, they increasingly seek treatments that align with a holistic view of wellness.
1. Less is More: simplifying products and regies will be more in demand in 2025. Consumers want
to reduce the number of steps they need to follow in their routines which means that topical products need to achieve more .
2. Moisture, Moisture, and more Moisture: there is strong evidence coming through that improving the function and health of the skin barrier is vital to improve all skin types and skin concerns. One of the fundamental steps to achieving this is a well hydrated skin. This does not mean applying thick rich moisturisers all the time but rather selecting the correct hydrating ingredients for one's skin type. Oily or combination skin types will do well with light-weight hyaluronic acid serums or creams.
3. Increased Use of Exosomes, Polynucleotides, And Growth Factors: more and more evidence is showing the importance of switching skin cells on again so that they act more youthful.
4. Online Purchases Will Increase: this trend has been seen worldwide and is one of the biggest markets internationally. As customers become more accustomed to what their skin needs the more confident they will be to make their skincare purchases online.
“2025 is set to be an exciting year for aesthetics,” Dr Nikolic concludes. “As consumer needs and demands continue to evolve, we can expect even more innovative treatments that prioritise both safety and efficacy.”
Dr Alek Nikolic, a renowned specialist in aesthetic medicine and is at the forefront of the latest developments in his field. With a focus on skin care, skin ingredients and cosmetic dermatology treatments such as lasers, chemical peels, Botox, and Dermal Fillers, he has performed over 20,000 procedures to date. He is responsible for training many medical practitioners both locally and internationally. The Sound and Somatic Journey at The Saxon Spa
In the business of daily life, we often neglect the quiet signals our bodies and minds are sending us. We carry emotional and physical tension, sometimes without realizing it, until we create space for stillness. I had the privilege of experiencing such a transformative moment at The Saxon Hotel & Spa through their unique Sound and Somatic Therapy. This holistic experience went far beyond typical relaxation-it offered a deep, transformative journey that restored balance, peace, and clarity.
The Saxon Hotel, Villas & Spa is a renowned sanctuary in South Africa, celebrated not only for its luxury but also for its commitment to holistic well-being. Located in Johannesburg, the Saxon is considered one of the finest hotels in the world, recognized by prestigious awards such as Leading Hotel of the World. However, it is the Saxon Spa that truly sets it apart-offering more than just indulgent treatments, but a place where body, mind, and soul can truly reconnect.
One of the standout offerings at Saxon Spa is the Sound and Somatic Journey, a therapeutic experience that combines sound, vibration, aromatherapy, and crystals to promote deep healing. The moment I entered this serene space, I could feel the ambiance wrap around me-soft lighting, calming scents, and a tranquil energy that immediately began to ease the stresses of the outside world.
Sound therapy is an ancient healing practice that uses specific frequencies to promote balance and healing within the body. It's grounded in the understanding that everything, including our bodies, is made up of energy and vibrates at a particular frequency. Water, which makes up a large percentage of the human body, is especially responsive to sound vibrations. During the session, I experienced this firsthand as the vibrations from Tibetan singing bowls, gongs, and chimes filled the room, creating waves of healing energy that seemed to reach into every cell of my body.
These sound frequencies worked in harmony with my body's natural rhythms, helping to release emotional and physical blockages. I could feel deep-seated tension-particularly in my shoulders and lower back-slowly melt away as the soothing sounds washed over me. The deep resonance of the instruments felt like they were resonating with my very core, encouraging a profound sense of peace and relaxation.
The technical basis behind this experience lies in the concept of entrainment, where the body's frequencies align with those of the external sound, helping restore equilibrium. When the body is out of balance-whether through stress, emotional turmoil, or physical tension-sound therapy can help guide it back to its optimal state of harmony.
Adding another layer of depth to this already powerful therapy were the carefully chosen crystals and essential oils, which further facilitated my healing journey. Before the session, I was invited to select a crystal that resonated with me, an experience that felt intuitively guided. Crystals are known to have unique vibrational properties that interact with our own energy fields. Depending on their specific qualities, they can help balance the energy in different parts of the body, particularly the chakras, or energy centers.
I chose a rose quartz, a stone known for promoting emotional healing and love. Holding the crystal during the session, I could feel its calming energy flow through my hands, grounding me even further into the healing process. Crystals, like sound, interact with the body's energy systems, amplifying the healing effects of the therapy.
The essential oils, too, played a pivotal role in my journey. Aromatherapy works by influencing the limbic system, which controls emotions, memory, and arousal. The fragrance of the essential oils immediately invoked a sense of calm and grounded me further into the present moment. The combination of sound frequencies and aromatherapy helped elevate my emotional state, shifting my awareness and allowing me to fully surrender to the healing process.
As part of the experience, I was also guided to focus on positive affirmations, words of healing that aligned with my emotional and energetic needs. Affirmations have a profound impact on the subconscious mind, helping to release negative thought patterns and reinforce new, empowering beliefs.
What truly sets this therapy apart is its somatic componentan approach focused on the body as a pathway to emotional release. Sound therapy works not only on the mind but directly on the body, where emotional and physical tension is often stored. As the vibrations moved through my body, I could feel areas of tightness and resistance begin to loosen. This somatic healing helped me reconnect with parts of my body that I had been unknowingly neglecting, inviting me to let go of tension held in my muscles and tissues.
Somatic therapy encourages a deep awareness of the body's sensations, which helps identify where stress, anxiety, or past emotional trauma is stored. It's a gentle yet potent method that facilitates emotional release, allowing the energy that has been trapped within the body to flow freely again. I was surprised by how deeply the sound and vibrations seemed to release tension in areas I hadn't even realized I was holding.
The journey would not have been the same without the guidance of the incredible therapist, Mandy Trollip. With her expertise in sound therapy, somatic healing, and emotional wellness, Mandy created a space that felt safe, nurturing, and deeply transformative. Her intuitive approach to therapy allowed her to tailor the session to my unique needs, and her calm presence made it easy to surrender to the experience.
Mandy's skillful integration of sound, crystals, aromatherapy, and affirmations facilitated a profound emotional release and brought a deep sense of peace and clarity. Her ability to connect with her clients on a personal level and her expertise in the therapeutic modalities made the experience feel deeply holistic, offering me healing on multiple levels.
The Sound and Somatic Journey at Saxon Spa is more than just a treatment-it's a holistic experience that supports deep healing for the body, mind, and spirit. My experience at Saxon Spa left me feeling lighter, more centered, and deeply reconnected with my inner self. The combination of sound therapy, crystals, aromatherapy, affirmations, and somatic healing provided a multi-faceted approach to wellness, one that can leave a lasting impact long after the session ends.
The experience at Saxon Spa is a reminder of how powerful it can be to stop, listen, and allow ourselves to heal-something I wholeheartedly recommend to anyone seeking emotional clarity, relaxation, and deep healing.
Across the globe, people rediscovered the therapeutic benefits of putting one foot in front of the other, leading to a resurgence of interest in ancient pilgrimage trails. In 2025, this trend is set to soar, more than 2024 as more individuals embark on multi-day hikes infused with spiritual exploration and cultural heritage, embracing the transformative power of the pilgrimage.
Walking enthusiasts are broadening their horizons by exploring ancient pilgrimage trails steeped in history and spirituality, moving beyond traditional hiking routes. In 2023, the famous Camino de Santiago in Spain witnessed a record-breaking number of pilgrims, showcasing the enduring allure of this iconic route. However, attention is also shifting towards lesser-known trails such as the Shikoku 88 in Japan and the Michinoku Coastal Trail.
These lesser-known pilgrimage routes offer unique opportunities for spiritual exploration and cultural immersion. For instance, the Shikoku 88 pilgrimage, encompassing 88 temples on the island of Shikoku, Japan, is deeply rooted in Buddhist tradition and offers pilgrims a chance to experience Japan's rich cultural heritage. Similarly, the Michinoku Coastal Trail in northeastern Japan provides breathtaking views of rugged coastline, pristine forests, and historic landmarks, offering pilgrims a profound connection with nature.
Moreover, pilgrimage destinations in Sri Lanka, Bhutan, India, and Italy have undergone extensive restorations to accommodate the growing demand for holistic tourism experiences. These destinations offer diverse landscapes, from lush forests and majestic mountains to serene coastal paths and ancient ruins, providing pilgrims with a rich tapestry of experiences.
The resurgence of interest in ancient pilgrimage trails reflects a desire for meaningful travel experiences that nourish the body, mind, and soul. Pilgrimage journeys offer a unique blend of physical activity, cultural exploration, and spiritual enrichment, providing pilgrims with opportunities for personal growth and self-discovery.
Embarking on a pilgrimage is not just a physical journey but a profound quest for self-discovery and transformation. From a wellness standpoint, it serves as a metaphorical path to enlightenment, encouraging travelers to embark on a slow, meditative exploration of themselves and the world around them.
Pilgrimage travel fosters a deep connection with nature, inviting pilgrims to immerse themselves in the beauty and tranquility of their surroundings. As they walk along ancient trails and through sacred landscapes, they experience a sense of awe and wonder that awakens their senses and opens their hearts to the mysteries of the universe.
One of the most transformative aspects of pilgrimage is the unexpected encounters with strangers along the way. These chance meetings often lead to
profound insights and a deeper understanding of humanity. Whether sharing stories with fellow travelers or receiving acts of kindness from locals, pilgrims are reminded of the interconnectedness of all living beings and their place in the world.
Moreover, the physical challenges of pilgrimage travel, such as long distances and rugged terrain, serve as a metaphor for life's journey. As pilgrims navigate obstacles and overcome hardships, they develop resilience, perseverance, and a deeper appreciation for the journey itself.
Ultimately, the pilgrimage experience is not just about reaching a destination but about the inner transformation that occurs along the way. By surrendering to the rhythm of the journey and embracing the unknown, pilgrims embark on a soulstirring adventure that leads them to a deeper understanding of themselves and their place in the universe.
Wellness programs and retreats are recognizing the transformative power of pilgrimage journeys and are incorporating specialized offerings to cater to this growing interest. Savvy resorts and wellness retreats are now curating immersive experiences that seamlessly blend physical activity with spiritual exploration, providing participants with a holistic approach to well-being that nurtures the body, mind, and soul.
These programs often feature activities that integrate visits to sacred sites, participation in religious rituals, and engagement with spiritual practices. For example, participants may have the opportunity to meditate with monks in ancient monasteries, partake in traditional religious services at revered temples, or practice mindfulness amidst serene natural settings along the pilgrimage route.
By combining physical activity with spiritual exploration, these programs offer a unique opportunity for individuals to deepen their connection with themselves and the world around them. The act of walking along ancient trails and engaging in contemplative practices fosters a sense of inner peace, clarity, and renewal.
Furthermore, these experiences allow participants to immerse themselves in the rich cultural and spiritual traditions of the destinations they visit. Through interactions with local communities and cultural exchanges, participants gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of diverse customs, beliefs, and ways of life.
Pilgrimage journeys provide an unparalleled opportunity for individuals to immerse themselves in diverse cultures and traditions, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of the interconnectedness of humanity. As travelers embark on these journeys and traverse ancient trails to visit sacred sites, they engage directly with local communities, exchange stories, and establish meaningful connections that transcend language and cultural barriers.
The cultural exchange that occurs during pilgrimage journeys enriches the overall experience, creating moments of profound connection and mutual respect between pilgrims and the communities they encounter along the way. Through interactions with locals, pilgrims gain insights into different ways of life, customs, and traditions, broadening their perspectives and fostering a greater sense of empathy and understanding. While forging of lasting friendships and relationships built on shared experiences and mutual respect.
One key aspect of sustainable pilgrimage tourism is the preservation of natural habitats and cultural sites. Many pilgrimage routes traverse through ecologically sensitive areas and historically significant landmarks, making them vulnerable to degradation and overuse. To address this, various conservation efforts are being implemented, including habitat restoration projects, waste management initiatives, and the establishment of protected areas along pilgrimage routes. By safeguarding these sites, authorities aim to maintain their ecological integrity and cultural significance for years to come.
Furthermore, responsible tourism practices are being promoted to ensure that pilgrims respect the environment and local communities during their journeys. Travelers are encouraged to "leave no trace" by minimizing their environmental footprint, such as avoiding littering, staying on designated trails, and using eco-friendly transportation options whenever possible. Additionally, pilgrims are urged to respect local customs and traditions, seeking permission before entering sacred sites, and adhering to cultural norms and etiquette.
Support for eco-friendly accommodations and businesses along pilgrimage routes is also essential for sustainable tourism. Many communities rely on tourism revenue to support their livelihoods, and by patronizing eco-conscious establishments, travelers can contribute to the local economy while minimizing their environmental impact. This includes staying in eco-lodges, dining at restaurants that prioritize locally sourced and sustainable ingredients, and purchasing souvenirs from ethical vendors.
Education and awareness play a crucial role in promoting sustainable pilgrimage tourism. Pilgrims should be provided with information about the environmental and cultural significance of the sites they visit, as well as guidelines on how to minimize their impact while traveling. This can be achieved through visitor centers, educational signage along pilgrimage routes, and outreach programs led by local guides and conservation organizations.
In conclusion, sustainable tourism practices are vital for preserving pilgrimage routes and sacred landscapes for future generations. By implementing conservation initiatives, promoting responsible tourism behavior, and supporting eco-friendly businesses, governments and communities can ensure that these iconic sites remain accessible and protected for pilgrims to enjoy for years to come. Through collective efforts, we can uphold the integrity of pilgrimage tourism while safeguarding the natural and cultural heritage of our planet.

The beauty industry is undergoing a monumental transformation, driven by rapid advancements in technology. With a global market valued at $445 billion, skincare brands are now leveraging cuttingedge tech tools to not only enhance product efficacy but to deliver highly personalized, efficient, and convenient experiences for consumers. From advanced beauty tools to artificial intelligence (AI) and augmented reality (AR), the future of skincare is intertwined with tech innovation. As a skincare professional, it's essential to recognize the profound impact these innovations can have on your brand, customer engagement, and market positioning.
Remember the buzz surrounding the Clarisonic facial brush when it was introduced in 2001? It was groundbreaking in offering a deeper, more thorough cleanse, and it paved the way for today's advanced beauty tools. In 2025, the beauty tech space is teeming with even more sophisticated devices, such as at-home microdermabrasion kits, blue light acne masks, and smart hairbrushes. These devices do more than enhance superficial beauty-they address a wide array of skincare concerns, including acne, ageing, hyperpigmentation, and overall skin health.
As a skincare brand, it's crucial to embrace these innovations and integrate them into your offerings. “For basic at-home skincare, such as cleansing and exfoliation, many of these devices can be effective,” explains Dr. Claire Wolinsky, a New York-based dermatologist. “However, when it comes to more complex skin concerns, professional treatments remain essential.”
The next generation of beauty tools is no longer just about selling products-they're about enhancing the consumer's skincare journey. Devices like voiceactivated smart mirrors, which adjust lighting for optimal skincare or analyze skin conditions down to the finest details, are rapidly becoming must-have tools for skincare enthusiasts. These innovations empower users to monitor their skin health, giving them more control over their routines and reinforcing the importance of high-quality skincare.
In 2025, beauty apps are an essential component of any skincare routine. These apps provide consumers with an easy way to explore new products, get personalized recommendations, and access expert advice-all from the comfort of their smartphones.
Popular apps like Beautylish allow users to browse the latest beauty trends, access peer-to-peer tutorials, and purchase products without ever leaving the app. Similarly, apps like Indulge offer users the ability to scan their nail colors and find exact product matches.
For skincare brands, apps provide a powerful opportunity to engage directly with consumers, offering personalized experiences that build loyalty and trust. By integrating product recommendations, skin analysis, and real-time consultations, beauty apps can foster deeper relationships with your customers.
Artificial intelligence is taking personalization to the next level. By leveraging AI, skincare brands can deliver highly tailored recommendations, helping consumers find the right products for their unique skin types and concerns. For example, My Beauty Matches uses machine learning to recommend skincare and haircare products based on individual characteristics, from skin tone to hair texture.
L'Oréal's ModiFace, which utilizes facial recognition technology, allows users to upload selfies and virtually try on makeup products. This technology, paired with AI-powered chatbots, enables skincare brands to provide virtual consultations and product suggestions, enhancing the customer experience without requiring an in-person visit.
However, while AI offers impressive capabilities, it is important to manage consumer expectations. “The digitized experience created by AI apps may look flawless on-screen, but the real-world results can sometimes differ,” explains Elisabeth Lovell, founder of Whiteroom Salon. “For example, a hair color change might seem simple in an app, but the process is more complex and time-consuming in reality.” Still,
AI's potential to provide personalized skincare recommendations is revolutionizing the beauty industry.
One of the most exciting innovations in beauty is augmented reality (AR), which allows users to virtually try on products before making a purchase. Whether testing out a new lipstick or selecting the perfect skincare product, AR is bridging the gap between physical and digital beauty experiences. A recent study by Perfect365 revealed that 78% of millennial consumers are more likely to purchase cosmetics if they can preview them virtually, demonstrating the power of AR in driving consumer decision-making.
For skincare brands, integrating AR into your online platforms can transform the shopping experience. Apps like YouCam Makeup allow users to scan their faces and virtually apply makeup, giving them a preview of how products will look in real life. Meanwhile, Coty's AR mirror lets customers experiment with different hair colours, and Sally Hansen's ManiMatch app enables users to scan their hands and try on nail colours virtually.
AR offers an opportunity to engage customers. It provides an interactive, immersive experience that can enhance product discovery, boost customer satisfaction, and increase conversion rates.
As we move further into 2025, the beauty and skincare industries will continue to evolve with technology at the forefront. Personalization will remain a key driver, with AI, AR, and other digital tools enabling brands to offer highly customized skincare routines and product recommendations. Whether it's using a smart mirror to track skin progress or relying on an AI-powered app for expert advice, the future of skincare is about integrating technology into everyday routines.
By embracing these technological advancements, skincare brands can secure their position as leaders in an ever-competitive market, providing personalized, high-quality experiences that meet the evolving needs of today's consumers.
LNE & Spa: We had the privilege of speaking with Janine Verster, an international expert in wellness lifestyle real estate. The concept of wellness lifestyle real estate is gaining significant global attention, and South Africa has a unique opportunity to embrace this trend. Welcome.
Janine Verster: Thank you. It's a pleasure to discuss such an exciting and transformative topic. Wellness lifestyle real estate is truly on the rise, and I believe South Africa has a major opportunity to be at the forefront of this global movement.
LNE & Spa: Let's dive into the basics. For those who may not be familiar, what exactly is wellness lifestyle real estate?
Janine Verster: Wellness lifestyle real estate refers to homes and communities that are designed and built with the primary goal of enhancing the health and well-being of their residents. This includes everything from the design of the physical spacelike the choice of materials, natural lighting, air quality, and green spaces-to the integration of wellness features such as fitness centres, meditation rooms, and community spaces. It's about creating an environment that fosters both physical health and mental well-being, and that extends to how people interact with the space and with each other.
In essence, it's a holistic approach that considers the entire living experience, from the home itself to the community surrounding it. This is increasingly important because people are recognizing that where and how we live has a significant impact on our health and quality of life.
LNE & Spa: It sounds like this is a shift in how we traditionally think about real estate. How did this movement gain traction?
Janine Verster: That's right-it's a significant shift. Wellness real estate has gained momentum because of a growing awareness around the importance of health and well-being in our daily lives. Over the last decade, there has been a rise in interest in sustainability, healthy living, and creating spaces that support mental and emotional health. People are increasingly aware of the link between their environment and their well-being.
With urbanization on the rise, and many of us spending more time at home than ever before, the home environment has become a central part of our overall health strategy. As we've seen, traditional homes have not always been designed with wellness in mind, and the focus has often been on luxury or practicality. But now, people want more. They want homes that not only provide shelter but support an overall healthier lifestyle.
LNE & Spa: It's clear that the wellness lifestyle movement is growing, but how big is this market? What's the impact of wellness real estate on the broader real estate industry?
Janine Verster: Wellness real estate is experiencing incredible growth. According to the Global Wellness Institute (GWI), wellness real estate was valued at $275 billion in 2020, and this sector is expected to reach $1 trillion by 2027. What's truly fascinating
is that wellness real estate is growing at a much faster pace than the overall real estate market.
For example, in 2020, despite the global challenges of the pandemic, the wellness real estate sector saw growth of over 22%, while traditional real estate construction shrank by around 2.5%. That speaks volumes about the increasing demand for homes that prioritize health and well-being.
Interestingly, the wellness features in homes are no longer considered a luxury or “nice-to-have” additions. They are becoming an expectationespecially as people seek to improve their quality of life. It's no longer just about what's inside the house; it's about how the house and its surrounding environment support your lifestyle.
Globally, we're seeing over 2,300 wellness residential projects in the pipeline across the world. And it's not just in high-end markets anymore. We're seeing wellness features integrated into homes at all price points. That's a clear indication that wellness real estate is becoming a more integral part of the broader market.
LNE & Spa: That's impressive growth. What are some of the major trends driving the growth of wellness lifestyle real estate?
Janine Verster: There are several key trends that are shaping the future of wellness real estate. Let me highlight a few of the most impactful ones:
1.Biophilic Design: Biophilic design is all about connecting people with nature. This includes natural lighting, the use of sustainable and natural materials, and bringing outdoor elements like plants, water features, and gardens into the home. Studies have shown that biophilic design reduces stress, improves focus, and boosts overall mental health. It's a growing trend in wellness real estate because it acknowledges the powerful link between nature and well-being.
2. Smart Homes and Wellness Technology: As technology continues to evolve, wellness homes are incorporating advanced technologies designed to improve health. We're talking about things like air filtration systems, circadian lighting that adjusts to your body's natural rhythms, water purification systems, and even smart appliances that track your fitness or sleep patterns. Technology is being used to create homes that are more attuned to the needs of their residents.
3. Sustainability and Eco-Friendly Features: Sustainability is a key component of wellness real estate. Homes today are increasingly built with ecofriendly materials, renewable energy sources, and energy-efficient appliances. This trend reflects a broader shift towards more responsible, sustainable living. And not only do these features benefit the environment, but they also create healthier living conditions by reducing exposure to harmful chemicals and pollutants.
4. Active Living and Community Engagement: A wellness home is not just about what happens inside the four walls; it's about creating a space that encourages movement and interaction. This includes incorporating outdoor walking paths, bike trails,
fitness centres, and communal spaces designed to foster social engagement. The goal is to encourage healthy behaviour by making it easy for residents to stay active and connected with their neighbours.
5.Focus on Mental Health: One of the biggest shifts is the increased focus on mental well-being. Homes are being designed with spaces that promote relaxation, mindfulness, and mental clarity. Meditation rooms, soundproof areas, and even design elements that reduce noise pollution are becoming common. These features help residents unwind and de-stress, which is essential for overall wellness.
LNE & Spa: These trends are certainly creating a more holistic approach to living. What about the specific opportunities for South Africa?
Janine Verster: South Africa has an incredible opportunity to embrace wellness lifestyle real estate. With its natural beauty, diverse landscapes, and a growing awareness of the importance of health, South Africa is well-positioned to become a leader in wellness real estate.
LNE & Spa: So, what would it take for South Africa to embrace wellness real estate on a larger scale?
Janine Verster: South Africa has the potential to be a leader in this space, but it will require collaboration, investment, and forward-thinking strategies. There are a few key steps to take:
1. Urban Planning Focused on Health and Wellness: South Africa's urban planning needs to evolve to prioritize wellness. This means incorporating green spaces, sustainable architecture, and public health considerations into every development.
2. Collaboration with International Developers and Experts: South Africa can benefit from collaborating with international experts and developers who are already leading in wellness real estate. These collaborations will bring valuable knowledge, investment, and global insights into local projects.
3. Community-Centred Development: Wellness real estate is not just about individual homes-it's about building communities that support well-being.
4. Investment in Sustainability: As the global demand for eco-friendly and sustainable living grows, South Africa can make sustainability a priority in new developments. From energy-efficient homes to waste-reduction initiatives, sustainable practices should be at the heart of wellness real estate in South Africa.
LNE & Spa: This conversation has certainly inspired a lot of excitement about the future of wellness real estate in South Africa. Thank you for sharing your insights today!
Janine Verster: It was a pleasure! I'm excited to see how South Africa embraces this trend in the coming years. Wellness real estate is not just a trendit's the future, and South Africa has an incredible opportunity to be a part of it.

In today's competitive business environment, it's no longer enough to simply stay ahead of the competition; businesses must find ways to thrive by working together. This is particularly true in the luxury spa and wellness sectors, where collaboration, rather than competition, is proving to be a powerful path toward success. By embracing a philosophy of shared growth and lateral thinking, brands in this space can create experiences that benefit everyone, from spa operators to consumers.
While competition has always been a driving force in business, the concept of competing to grow together is slowly gaining momentum. When wellness and luxury brands come together to create innovative and immersive experiences, the result is a symbiotic relationship that benefits all parties involved. Luxury brands, such as Dior and Evian, as examples quoted by Jacoline Wentzel, The Spa Warehouse, at the LNE Spa Conference 2024, have shown that when businesses with similar values and complementary identities collaborate, they can create something far greater than what each brand could accomplish on its own.
Instead of seeing other luxury spas or wellness companies as rivals, savvy business owners are beginning to see them as potential collaborators who can help elevate the entire industry. By sharing expertise, resources, and ideas, these collaborations enrich the consumer experience while also driving business growth.
One of the core ideas behind successful collaborations in the wellness and luxury sectors is lateral thinking-the ability to approach problems and opportunities from unexpected perspectives. By thinking outside of traditional frameworks, brands can find new ways to integrate their identities and extend their reach, making their offerings not just products or services, but entire lifestyle experiences.
For instance, a luxury brand like Dior could collaborate with a spa to offer unique treatments
inspired by its fragrance line or its iconic fashion collections. Alternatively, a spa could partner with a wellness brand like Aveda to offer products and services that focus on the mind-body connection. These unexpected partnerships provide a fresh approach to wellness and luxury, drawing customers in with novel concepts that elevate the experience beyond the ordinary.
Moreover, these collaborations don't just benefit the brands-they create a more enriching experience for consumers, too. By bringing together diverse expertise, customers can enjoy a broader range of high-quality services that they wouldn't be able to experience in a typical spa or wellness center.
At the heart of every successful collaboration is shared value. In a world where consumers crave authenticity and meaningful experiences, the blending of wellness, culture, and luxury represents a powerful opportunity for brands to create deeper connections with their audiences.
When a luxury brand enters the wellness space through collaboration, it's not simply about offering treatments; it's about offering an experience that aligns with the brand's overall identity. By doing so, both the spa and the luxury brand become integral parts of the same narrative, working in harmony to fulfill the desires of the consumer.
For example, a partnership between a luxury fashion brand and a wellness center can provide customers with a full wellness journey-from fitness and nutrition to mental wellness-while also connecting them to the brand's heritage and story. These cross-industry partnerships invite customers to experience the best of both worlds in a way that feels authentic and rewarding.
For spas and wellness businesses, embracing collaborations is more than just a strategic move-it's a chance to innovate and tap into new markets. As luxury brands continue to invest in wellness, spas
have a unique opportunity to align themselves with these brands to offer more exclusive and unique experiences. Whether through co-branded treatments, shared spaces, or joint marketing campaigns, collaborations open doors for businesses to grow in ways they might not have been able to do alone.
Spa operators can also look at collaborations from a more localized perspective, working together with other wellness providers, local businesses, or even wellness tech companies. By forging relationships with like-minded companies, they can create experiences that are tailored to their local clientele while benefiting from the exposure and expertise of their collaborators.
The future of luxury wellness collaborations is bright, and businesses that embrace these partnerships are positioning themselves for success. Collaboration is not just about growing your own brand-it's about supporting the growth of the entire wellness ecosystem. By working together, wellness providers can create richer, more engaging experiences that are sure to resonate with consumers in the coming years.
As businesses in the wellness and luxury sectors continue to evolve, the most successful ones will be those that recognize the importance of collaboration, lateral thinking, and shared values. The idea of "competition" in the traditional sense is being replaced by the concept of "cooperation" in the wellness space. In 2025 and beyond, luxury spas and wellness centers that come together to collaborate will be at the forefront of creating the next generation of wellness experiences-ones that redefine the meaning of luxury and wellness in our lives.
Through collaboration, the entire wellness and luxury ecosystem can grow stronger, offering customers unparalleled experiences that reflect the best of both worlds. Together, the future of wellness is not just bright-it's a place where brands and businesses support each other, work together, and succeed together.

Wellness Tourism - the new buzz term
Wellness tourism - the buzz term for 2025 is prompting the development of specialised roles,
including hosts and hostesses for spa tours, wellness concierges and holistic health practitioners, to cater to travellers seeking health-focused experiences.
