"The Void": An Atypical Approach to Making Your Spa More Profitable 58
Conferences don’t end—they echo. The conversations, the inspiration, and the shared visions ripple far beyond the event itself. Their true impact unfolds when we return to our spas, bringing with us new perspectives to share with our teams, fresh ideas to test, and renewed energy to lead with intention. A conference is not a conclusion but a catalyst—its influence lingers in the decisions we make, the way we guide our staff, and the guest experiences we create. This is how the business of wellness is shaped: not in the moment, but in the echo.
The Spa Awards perfectly captured this spirit of momentum. Each winner and finalist, demonstrated what it means to combine passion with purpose — translating innovation, attention to detail, and creativity into meaningful guest experiences. From exceptional design and service to groundbreaking wellness concepts, their achievements set a benchmark that inspires us all. To celebrate excellence is not only to applaud success but also to recognise the path it lights for others. The awards remind us that progress is a shared journey. The Spa Awards showcase the depth of talent within our industry, proving that leadership comes in many forms—from quiet dedication to bold reinvention.
As we reflect on the awards and the conference, let us carry forward the lessons, the inspiration, and the echoes of possibility. Together, they challenge us to continue leading the wellness shift with intention.

Many years ago, when I opened my first gym, wellness meant one thing: “No pain, no gain.” We literally sold suffering as a service. The spa industry wasn't much better. A facial mask, some cucumber slices, and Kenny G on repeat was considered cutting-edge wellness.
Fast forward to today. Wellness is a staggering $4.5 trillion global economy . That's trillion with a T. Bigger than the pharmaceutical industry and Bigger than global tourism. And yet, I walk into hotel spas with “wellness centres” that still think scented candles and a Buddha statue constitute a wellness strategy.
We are at a pivotal moment. Wellness has outgrown its origins as a luxury indulgence. It's now reshaping how we live, work, and do business. It's become essential infrastructure for human flourishing.
But here's my challenge to you today: Are we truly serious about wellness? Or are we still just selling serenity at a markup?
I want to fundamentally shift how you think about the business of wellness. Wellness truly is the future-it's time we lead like it is with intention, innovation, and unapologetic impact.
When I look back at my journey through the wellness landscape, I'm struck by how radically our understanding has evolved.
In the 1980s, as a gym owner, wellness was purely physical-defined by visible muscles and cardiovascular endurance.
In the 1990s, as a personal wellness coach, we
began integrating nutrition and recoveryacknowledging that what happened outside the gym mattered just as much.
By the 2000s, as I developed boutique fitness concepts, wellness expanded to include mental health, stress management, and community connection.
And now, having overseen wellness for 26 luxury properties across Africa, I've seen it transform into a comprehensive lifestyle approach that spans everything from sleep quality to financial well-being.
Remember when “wellness tech” meant a heart rate monitor the size of a brick strapped to your chest? Now we have rings that track our sleep cycles, apps that guide our breathing, and wearables that know we're stressed before we do!
But here's what's fascinating: As wellness has evolved from a niche interest to a mainstream priority, it's created massive business opportunities. The companies that recognized this early-like Peloton, Headspace, and Lululemon-didn't just sell products. They sold participation in a movement.
The evolution of wellness isn't just about expanding definitions. It's about deepening impact. And that's where many businesses still fall short.
Let's talk numbers, because in business, numbers tell stories. The global wellness economy is projected to reach $7.0 trillion by 2025. Wellness tourism alone accounts for $817 billion. The mental wellness market? $121 billion. Workplace wellness? $48 billion.
But beyond the macro trends, let me share what I've witnessed firsthand: When I joined a fintech company as CHO, employee healthcare costs were rising 8% annually. Absenteeism was affecting project timelines. Burnout was driving turnover among our most valuable talent. Within 18 months of implementing a comprehensive wellness program-not just gym memberships, but sleep optimization, nutrition coaching, and mental health support - we saw:
- Healthcare cost increases drop to 3%
- Absenteeism reduced by 22%
- Turnover among high performers cut in half
The ROI was 3.4 to 1. For every dollar invested, we returned $3.40 to the bottom line. Wellness is a business multiplier reducing costs, increasing productivity and giving the competitive edge in recruitment and retention.
That's not a feel-good story. That's business impact.
At the hospitality group where I served as Director of Wellness, we transformed our approach from treating wellness as an amenity to positioning it as a core value proposition.
We redesigned our 26 properties to integrate wellness touchpoints throughout the guest journeyfrom circadian lighting in rooms to nutritionally optimized restaurant menus to immersive local wellness experiences.
The results?
- Average daily rate increased 12%
- Length of stay extended by 0.8 days
- Direct bookings grew by 17%
- Guest satisfaction scores rose from 8.2 to 9.3
This wasn't luck. This was strategy. We understood that wellness had shifted from a luxury to an expectation.
Let me give you one more example. When developing my boutique fitness businesses, I discovered that members who engaged with our wellness ecosystem - not just classes, but nutrition consultations, recovery sessions, and community events - had a 76% higher lifetime value than those who only came for workouts.
The business case is clear: Wellness isn't an expense. It's an investment with measurable, significant returns.
Now I want to challenge you. Because despite these compelling economics, many businesses are still practicing what I call “wellness washing.”
You know what I mean. It's when you rebrand your massage as a “holistic body treatment” without changing anything except the price. It's when you add the word “mindful” to your marketing materials but still expect staff to work 12-hour shifts. It's when you install a meditation corner but create a culture where no one feels they can actually use it.
Consumers are increasingly savvy about this disconnect. They can sense authenticity - or its absence - a mile away.
Let me share a story from my hospitality days. We acquired a property that had invested millions in a lavish new spa. Beautiful design, top-tier equipment, luxury products. Yet it was operating at 40% capacity with minimal repeat business.
When we dug deeper, we discovered the fundamental problem: The spa was selling relaxation in a hotel that was causing stress at every other touchpoint. Guests were dealing with slow checkin, unresponsive service, noisy rooms-and then being invited to “find their bliss” at the spa.
The wellness experience wasn't integrated. It was isolated.
We completely rethought our approach. Instead of viewing the spa as a revenue center, we positioned wellness as a guiding principle for the entire property.
We retrained all staff in wellness fundamentals. We reimagined every guest interaction through a wellness lens. We aligned operations, marketing, and service delivery around wellness values.
Within a year, spa utilization jumped to 78%. More importantly, overall hotel revenue increased by 23%, and we achieved the highest guest satisfaction scores in the company's history.
The lesson? Authentic wellness isn't a department. It's a philosophy.
I see the same pattern in the fitness businesses I've developed. The ones who create community and ecosystems that offer multiple modalities and not one dimensional experiences will shine.
So I ask you: Are you still treating wellness as a siloed offering? Or are you integrating it into your
core business model? Because surface-level solutions may generate short-term revenue, but they won't create sustainable com petitive advantage.
So where is wellness headed? Let me share what I see on the horizon.
First, personalization will become nonnegotiable. The one-size-fits-all approach to wellness is dead. Advances in genomics, biometric monitoring, and AI are enabling truly individualized wellness protocols. The spas and wellness businesses that thrive will be those that can customize experiences based on objective data, not just preferences.
Second, integration will be essential. Standalone wellness businesses will struggle as the lines between healthcare, wellness, hospitality, and technology continue to blur.
Third, wellness will become increasingly evidence-based. The era of pseudoscientific wellness claims is ending as consumers demand proof of efficacy.
Community will emerge as a key differentiator. In an increasingly digital world, the wellness businesses that create genuine human connection will have a sustainable advantage.
During my time overseeing wellness for those 26 properties across Africa, we discovered that guests who participated in community wellness activities were 3.2 times more likely to return than those who only used individual services. The desire for belonging is powerful - and it's a need that wellness businesses are uniquely positioned to fulfill.
Finally, wellness will increasingly be measured by outcomes, not inputs. It's not about how many services you offer or how luxurious your facility is. It's about the tangible improvement in people's lives.
At my last business, we shifted from tracking traditional metrics like membership numbers and class attendance to measuring improvements in sleep quality, stress levels, and overall life satisfaction. This outcomes-based approach transformed how we designed and delivered our services.
These trends aren't speculative. They're already reshaping the wellness landscape. The question is: Are you prepared to evolve with them?
As we look to the future of wellness, I want to leave you with a challenge and a vision. The challenge is this: Stop selling serenity. Start creating transformation.
Here's another factor going to blow up our industry in the next five years: Artificial Intelligence.
I was recently at a tech conference where they demonstrated an AI wellness coach, which could analyze sleep patterns, stress levels, nutrition, and biometrics in real-time. It could create personalized protocols that adapted minute by minute.
The person running the demo turned to me and said, “Steve, what happens to human wellness professionals when AI can do everything they do, but better, faster, and cheaper?”
Good question. Because if all we're offering is generic advice, standardized treatments, and onesize-fits-all solutions, we're about to become obsolete.
The mega challenge isn't just AI-it's that we've built an industry that's surprisingly easy to automate. Most wellness businesses are doing things that machines can do better.
So what's left for humans? What can we offer that AI can't? Here's what I learned about that AI wellness coach: It was incredibly smart, but it had one fatal flaw. It couldn't care. It didn't get what humans need most: connection, empathy, and someone who believes in their potential.
So here's the mega possibility: What if instead of competing with AI, we partnered with it? Imagine wellness experiences where AI handles all the technical optimization-sleep, nutrition, exercise, stress management-while humans focus entirely on possibility, transformation, and hope.
That's not just the future of wellness. That's the future of human flourishing. The mega possibility isn't about humans versus machines. It's about humans plus machines creating something neither could achieve alone.
So, what does taking wellness seriously actually mean?
Firstly it means measuring what matters. If you're not tracking the actual impact of your wellness offerings on people's health, happiness, and performance, you're missing the point.
It means investing in your own people. The most successful wellness businesses I've encountered practice what they preach. They ensure their staff embody the wellness principles they promote.
It means embracing innovation while maintaining integrity. Technology can enhance wellness delivery, but it can't replace human connection and authentic care.
It means thinking beyond transactions to transformations. The most valuable wellness businesses don't sell services; they facilitate journeys.
Finally, it means recognizing that wellness isn't a trend; it's a fundamental shift in how humans approach their lives and their health.
I've been in this industry for four decades. I've seen fads come and go. I've watched businesses rise and fall. And I can tell you with absolute certainty: Wellness isn't going anywhere. It's only becoming more central to how we live, work, and thrive.
The businesses represented at the spa conference today have an extraordinary opportunity. You can be part of a movement that genuinely improves lives while building sustainable, profitable enterprises.
But only, if you get serious about wellness.
The future of wellness isn't just about feeling good. It's about creating good. And that's a business worth building.

In a crowded and highly competitive wellness market, some spas rise above the rest. They don't just offer treatments-they deliver experiences that guests remember, talk about, and return for. What sets these world-class spas apart? The answer lies in a series of thoughtful, consistent actions behind the scenes that collectively elevate the entire guest journey.
Top spas don't attempt to please everyone. Instead, they carve out a clear identity rooted in their unique values, location, and clientele. This vision guides every decision - from design and treatment offerings to staff recruitment and communication.
“As a Spa Director, I've learned that clarity is everything,” says Amara Jensen, Director of Wellness at the renowned Banyan Tree Resort in Phuket. “Our philosophy focuses on connecting guests with the natural environment around them. Every treatment, every product, every interaction supports that story. It's what creates authenticity.”
Similarly, David Chen, General Manager at Aman Spa Bali, explains, “We're not selling massages. We're offering an immersive cultural and healing journey that is deeply tied to Balinese traditions. This focus helps our team deliver an experience that's both unique and deeply satisfying.”
The Ritual of Excellence
Micro-rituals define the guest experience in many acclaimed spas. These aren't random acts - they're carefully crafted moments that communicate care, professionalism, and respect.
“Our therapists greet each guest with a personalized hand gesture and a warm smile,” says Sophie Laurent, Spa Manager at Château Saint-Martin & Spa, France. “It might sound small, but that moment immediately builds trust and connection.”
At the Miraval Resort in Arizona, a pre-treatment mindfulness moment encourages guests to set intentions, helping them switch off from daily stress and prepare mentally for healing. As Miraval's Wellness Lead, James O'Neill, notes, “When guests start their treatment with focused intention, the benefits multiply. We're not just treating bodies; we're nurturing minds.”
“Therapists are the heart of our spa,” says Elena Rodríguez, HR and Training Manager at Six Senses Kaplankaya, Turkey. “We provide regular wellness check-ins, ongoing education, and opportunities for growth. When our team thrives, our guests feel it.”
At Mandarin Oriental, staff wellness programs include yoga sessions, nutrition workshops, and financial coaching. Spa Operations Manager Marcus Li reflects, “We see a direct link between employee wellbeing and guest satisfaction. Energized teams deliver more authentic, empathetic service.”
The difference between good and extraordinary spas often lies in the details guests barely noticebut deeply feel.
“We monitor everything from water temperature to room scent and lighting levels,” explains Anjali Patel, Spa Director at The Oberoi Udaivilas, India. “Our guests might not consciously notice, but these elements create a seamless, calming environment.”
Japanese ryokans are legendary for such precision. The meticulous folding of towels or the subtle scent of hinoki wood isn't just tradition-it's a sensory cue that guests associate with care and order.
Staying at the top requires constant renewal of skills and ideas.
“We bring in experts from around the worldacupuncturists, herbalists, sound healers-to keep our team inspired and our offerings fresh,” shares Tina Matsuda, Training Director at the Bulgari Spa, London. “This continuous learning culture motivates staff and keeps our treatments cutting-edge.”
“A spa without a story is just a service provider, the best spas craft a narrative that guests can see, hear, and feel-from architecture and rituals to product choices and staff attitude. This transforms a stay into a deeply personal journey.” says Dr Nadine de Freitas (LNE & Spa)
Excellence demands knowing not just financial outcomes, but guest satisfaction, staff happiness, and operational efficiency.
“We track everything-treatment occupancy, guest feedback, therapist retention,” notes Amara Jensen. “Data guides our decisions and helps us coursecorrect before small issues become big problems.”
Behind the glamour and serenity of world-class spas lies a discipline of daily care, investment, and innovation. It's hundreds of micro-decisions and moments of mindful attention that turn a spa visit into an extraordinary experience.
“As a spa leader, my goal is simple: to create a place where guests feel truly seen, cared for, and renewed,” says David Chen. “Excellence isn't a destination - it's a continuous journey we take together, every day.”
In the hotel world, storytelling is no longer a niceto-have- it's the cornerstone of brand building. From Aman's immersive cultural narratives to the Four Seasons' destination-led campaigns, the most successful hospitality brands have mastered the art of turning a stay into a story worth sharing. And it's working: according to Expedia Group's 2024 Travel Trends report, 74% of travelers say they are more likely to book when a destination's story resonates with them emotionally.
Yet in the spa sector, marketing often remains rooted in transactional messaging - treatment lists, price points, and seasonal specials. While these are functional, they rarely create an emotional hook. In a world where wellness is no longer a luxury but a lifestyle, spas have a golden opportunity to adopt the narrative playbook hotels have perfected.
At its core, storytelling builds emotional connection. Neuroscientists have shown that stories engage more areas of the brain than facts alone, boosting recall and trust. A study by Headstream found that if people love a brand's story, 55% are more likely to buy from it in the future, 44% will share it, and 15% will buy the product immediately.
Hotels leverage this by weaving tales of place, history, and transformation into every touchpointfrom their websites and welcome letters to in-room experiences. They're not selling rooms; they're inviting guests into a living narrative. Spas can do the same by framing each treatment as part of a journey rather than a stand-alone service.
Consider Banyan Tree's Sense of Place philosophy, where spa rituals are inspired by the local culturelike Thai herbal compresses prepared from herbs

grown in their own gardens. This transforms a massage from a generic service into a sensory link to the destination.
For urban spas, the “place” might be a design ethos, a wellness philosophy, or even the story of the founders. A Cape Town day spa could tell the story of the Atlantic's healing salt air in its body scrubs.
A medical spa might frame treatments as chapters in a longer transformation journey-introducing characters (the therapists), tension (skin challenges), and resolution (the results).
Hotels are experts at ensuring that the story is consistent across platforms. The Ritz-Carlton, for instance, integrates its “Ladies and Gentlemen” service ethos into every social media post, press release, and guest interaction. For spas, this means aligning your brand voice across your website, booking confirmations, treatment rooms, and postvisit follow-ups. The moment your narrative feels disjointed, trust is weakened.
In uncertain economic climates, travelers and wellness consumers alike become more selective. The Global Wellness Institute notes that in 2024, guests are seeking reassurance through authenticity-wanting to feel that the experiences they choose are meaningful and worth their investment. Storytelling offers that reassurance by showing the human side of your brand: your values, your origins, and the transformations you help create.
Luxury hotels have long understood that guests become loyal when they feel part of the story. Spas
can deepen loyalty by inviting clients into the narrative-sharing behind-the-scenes glimpses of treatment creation, featuring therapist profiles, or inviting guest testimonials that feel like personal journal entries.
A simple shift-like reframing a “Customer Reviews” page into “Guest Stories”-can change how clients perceive your spa. They're not just reading endorsements; they're entering into a living tapestry of shared experiences.
1. Define your core narrative - Identify your origin story, your philosophy, and the emotional promise you offer guests.
2. Integrate the local or thematic elementWhether it's your region's natural resources, a specific healing tradition, or a modern design ethos, anchor your story in something tangible.
3. Map the guest journey - Align touchpoints (website, reception, treatment room, post-visit) to reinforce the narrative.
4. Train your team as storytellers - Therapists, receptionists, and marketers should all understand and communicate the story naturally.
5. Measure emotional impact - Track not just bookings, but mentions, shares, and repeat visits linked to storytelling campaigns.
Storytelling is not a marketing trick; it's a way to frame your spa's identity in a crowded marketplace. As hotels have proven, it turns a single visit into an enduring connection. And in wellness, connection is the ultimate luxury.
As leaders in the luxury wellness and spa industry, our credibility hinges on authenticity. It's not enough to simply preach luxurious wellness; we must embody it in our own lives. Guests seek transformation, and genuine inspiration comes from those who have walked the path themselves.
After a challenging schedule in 2024, my journey began with a crucial realization: to effectively give back to the wellness industry, one must first be well. A demanding schedule often made a balanced lifestyle challenging, leading to a mindset shift towards prioritizing personal well-being.
My personal quest involved a 8-month deep dive into various wellness practices, from DNA tests and sound baths to yoga, Pilates, cold plunges, forest bathing, and retreats, including a transformative Smiling Soul retreat in Bali.
Through this ongoing exploration, I discovered several "underrated wellness luxuries" that are essential for daily well-being and enable me to
By Jacoline Wentzel, Managing Director of The Spa Warehouse
support others effectively. This is a personal list, and I encourage you to find what resonates with your own lifestyle.
As my profession as spa consultant, I travel extensively. Appreciating the sunrise in quiet silence and meditation has become a soothing ritual, a time for calm, and often, where the best ideas are born. I often say “ I need space to create” and it seems it is often at dawn when my mind is ready to create.
With regular rush of adrenalin and my body in regular fight or flight mode, stress is very taxing to my body. Leaning into faith through prayer and journaling provides the best antidote to anxiety and feeling overwhelmed, especially during demanding times.
Spending quality time with friends and family, celebrating small occasions, and showing care to
everyone around me, without phone interruptions, truly makes my soul smile. I challenged myself to practice a Sabbath, at least one day a week. 24 hours of no work and no technology, while being present when spending time with love ones. The word of God says “what you sow you will reap”, so watch the reciprocated love you receive when showing it to others around you.
Finding movement linked to fun - from yoga and Pilates to snorkelling and hiking - ensures it not only feeds the body but also releases stress and encourages consistency. They key to consistent exercise is to do something fun and combine it with adventure.
Rest does not come easy to me, especially rest to my brain. My brain thinks, create and processes all day long. I often find myself feeling guilty when I sit and do nothing. Realizing that guiltless rest is as vital as movement for detoxification and recovery, and that spa treatments or personal holidays for relaxation are essential. Not just a luxury that is
suited for our clients, but also for ourselves to restore our balance, between work and home.
Embracing true nature and expressing who you are, free from others' expectations, is crucial for genuine happiness and a smiling soul. During my exploration in Bali, I realised my true nature is that of an island girl, who loves wearing flowers in my hair, surrounded by beautiful oceans, regular swimming in warm sea water and living on fresh fruit and seafood. Only exploration to various places in the world, made me realised that it is true nature.
When you open to exploration, you increase the chances of unexpected connections, new ideas and inspirations and personal growth. Whether it's a grand adventure abroad or a simple stroll through a new part of your town, embracing exploration truly does set the stage for those magical, lifealtering encounters. It's about being present, being open, and trusting that the journey itself holds incredible gifts.
Limiting tech time and scheduling intentional time outdoors is imperative for mental health, as nature is a proven healer. In a demanding schedule like mine, I intentionally make time for time outdoors, even if it means sitting on my porch, enjoying the winter sunlight while answering emails or hiking in our nearby mountains on the weekend.
Learning new things, trying new hobbies, or meeting new people expands horizons, keeping the brain engaged and life exciting, combating monotony. I would like to challenge you to try new things. During the last few months, it was the experiences I had during the tasting of Luwak Coffee (one of the most expensive coffees in the world), an ancient ritual sound bath at Pyramids of Chi or my first cold plunge in the mountains of Stanford that excited my spirit and made for unforgettable memories.
Freedom
The beauty of life is that we have the freedom to choose. Setting boundaries between work and play is imperative. Making time for your own wellness
will not only stand you in good stead immediately but will be the answer to longevity. You have the freedom to choose your own life. A well-balanced life that allows you to restore so that you can carry on giving.
As my wellness journey continues, I hope it inspires you and your team, to explore your own path and discover what truly suits you and your wellbeing.

In today's fast-evolving wellness landscape, relying solely on traditional spa treatments and retail sales is like sailing with only one sail up - your journey can be slow, unstable, and vulnerable to the winds of change. The most successful spa leaders understand this and are charting new waters by diversifying their revenue streams in exciting and innovative ways. If you're a spa manager looking to breathe fresh energy into your business, it's time to explore beyond the familiar and unlock new pathways to profitability and resilience.
Imagine transforming your spa from a place of occasional pampering into a thriving wellness destination that touches clients' lives in multiple meaningful ways - building loyalty, increasing visits, and creating dependable income all year round.
Let's embark on this journey and discover six gamechanging opportunities that go far beyond traditional retail.
First, consider memberships and wellness subscriptions. Think of these as your spa's steady compass, providing consistent, predictable revenue while weaving your clients into an exclusive community. Instead of a one-time visit, members become invested in their wellness journey with you.
Offering tiered memberships-complete with priority booking, special discounts, and access to membersonly events or digital wellness content-can deepen client relationships and boost repeat visits. The Sanctuary Spa in London, for example, saw a 35% rise in repeat business after launching a tiered membership that combined monthly treatments with wellness workshops. This steady stream of income provides a solid foundation to navigate seasonal lulls and economic shifts.
Next, let's step into the digital realm. Virtual
wellness services have emerged as a lifeline and growth opportunity. Offering live or on-demand yoga classes, guided meditation, virtual skin consultations, or wellness webinars extends your spa's reach far beyond its walls. Calm Waters Spa successfully launched an online platform with monthly subscriptions, attracting a global audience while nurturing connections that encourage product sales and future bookings.
The beauty here is flexibility-virtual services require minimal overhead and meet clients where they are, from the comfort of their homes or on the go.
As we sail further, don't overlook corporate wellness partnerships - a booming market eager for your expertise. More companies are investing in employee wellbeing programs, offering spas a golden opportunity to provide onsite chair massages, stress-relief workshops, and tailored corporate packages. ZenSpace Spa's collaboration with a local tech company for regular office massage sessions not only generated a new revenue channel but also brought in fresh individual clients. Corporate clients offer repeat business, broader exposure, and the chance to build lasting relationships that extend well beyond single visits.
But why stop there? Hosting wellness events and retreats can elevate your spa into a lifestyle destination and open premium revenue streams. Imagine immersive weekend retreats combining yoga, nutrition talks, and spa treatments-like the popular quarterly retreats at Elysian Spa. Or consider masterclasses featuring guest wellness experts, seasonal celebrations, or themed spa days that spark buzz and social sharing. These events create memorable experiences that guests cherish and want to repeat, turning your spa into more than a service-it becomes a community and a story worth telling.
Innovation is the wind in your sails when it comes to wellness technology and biohacking services Introducing treatments such as cryotherapy, infrared saunas, red light therapy, or neurofeedback taps into a growing market of health enthusiasts eager to optimize their wellbeing with cutting-edge solutions. Vitality Spa's success with tech-enhanced recovery therapies attracted a younger, fitness-focused clientele willing to pay premium prices. By embracing innovation, you not only diversify your offerings but position your spa as a pioneer in wellness.
Finally, let's talk about retail, but with a twistcustomization and lifestyle integration. Moving beyond the classic skincare shelves, spas can offer personalized wellness products tailored to individual client needs. Picture bespoke essential oil blends, personalized skincare kits based on detailed skin analyses, curated wellness boxes filled with teas, supplements, and relaxation tools.
What ties all these strategies together is the focus on deepening the client relationship by meeting their evolving needs with creativity, personalization, and value. Diversifying revenue streams isn't just about chasing more money-it's about building a resilient spa that thrives through change, keeps pace with wellness trends, and creates loyal brand advocates who return again and again.
So, to the spa managers and owners ready to set sail on this journey: listen closely to your guests, be curious about emerging wellness trends, and dare to innovate. Invest in your team's skills to confidently deliver new experiences, forge meaningful partnerships, and harness technology thoughtfully. With this mindset, your spa won't just survive-it will flourish, becoming a beacon of wellness and excellence in a crowded market.
The spa world is no longer a quiet corner of hospitality - it's becoming a stage where wellness, technology, and human connection collide. The consumers walking through your doors in 2025 are not just looking for a treatment; they're looking for a reason to choose you over the spa down the road.
Here are six trends transforming guest expectationsand how forward-thinking spas are using them to thrive.
Once upon a time, a menu of treatments was enough. Today, personalization is the currency of loyalty. Studies show 97% of spa guests value tailored experiences, and 81% are more likely to rebook when they feel their needs were remembered.
Think of Six Senses resorts, where guest preferencesright down to pillow scent-are recorded for future visits. Or the Aman Spa, which begins each session with a personalised wellness consultation, ensuring no two treatments are alike. In smaller boutique spas, something as simple as noting a guest's favourite herbal tea or remembering their skin concerns can make a lasting impression.
Personalization tells guests, “You matter.” And in a market full of choice, that matters more than ever.
Your booking experience is now part of your brand experience. If a guest can order dinner and plan a holiday from their phone, why should booking a facial be harder?
Spas like The Ritz-Carlton Spa in New York let clients browse treatment menus, choose therapists, and pay-all through their app. Additionally they reported a 40% jump in repeat bookings after adding mobile appointment reminders and online payment links.
When you make booking frictionless, you make coming back inevitable.
Relaxation alone isn't enough; guests want multisensory journeys. From sound baths in Bali to infrared saunas in Scandinavian wellness hotels, spas are curating moments that linger long after checkout.
As an example: At AIRE Ancient Baths in New York, guests move through candlelit pools at different temperatures-a ritual that feels like time travel.
Your challenge? Think beyond the massage table. Immersion is memory-and memory drives return visits.
Men's wellness is no longer niche. From muscle recovery treatments to grooming rituals, more men are booking spa time without apology.
Meanwhile, Gen Z is redefining what “self-care” means-seeking “digital detox” escapes and treatments with a mental health focus. In Seoul, some spas run “phone-free zones” to encourage true mental rest-a concept younger guests share enthusiastically on social media afterward.
To tap into these markets, you need more than a new menu item-you need marketing, language, and environments that make them feel welcome.
Luxury doesn't just mean scented candles-it means results. Cryotherapy, IV drips, red-light therapy, and lymphatic drainage are moving from elite biohacking clinics into mainstream spas.
Lanserhof Tegernsee in Germany has built a reputation by blending medical diagnostics with spa therapies. In Miami, Carillon Wellness Resort offers
guests personalised recovery protocols, from compression boots to vitamin infusions. These services not only justify higher price points-they make your spa a place guests associate with real, measurable wellness outcomes.
From AI-powered skincare analysis to massage robots, technology is reshaping how spas deliver service. The key is to use it to enhance-not replacethe human touch.
Some high-end spas now use AI mirrors that assess skin condition and recommend treatments or products, allowing therapists to focus on delivery rather than diagnostics. Others use VR meditation headsets during foot soaks, creating a unique pre-treatment ritual.
The magic happens when guests leave saying, “I've never experienced anything like that.”
The best spas in 2025 aren't simply keeping upthey're leaning in. They're telling stories, embracing innovation, and making guests feel like co-authors of their wellness journey.
The truth is, adapting to these trends isn't optionalit's the difference between being a menu of treatments and being a place guests can't stop talking about.
So ask yourself:
•How well do you know your guests?
•Can they book in 60 seconds on their phone?
•What sensory details define your spa?
•Are you reaching men and Gen Z with intent?
•Do your treatments offer measurable results?
•Is your tech making the human connection stronger?
If the answer to any of these is “not yet,” you have an opportunity-not a problem.
In the rapidly evolving wellness industry, spa design is no longer just about aesthetics-it's about crafting environments that actively promote healing, relaxation, and holistic wellbeing. The best spas today understand that their physical spaces are integral to the overall guest experience, influencing everything from mood to treatment effectiveness.
But what does the future hold for spa design? Let's explore six emerging trends shaping the next generation of spa environments.
Humans have an innate connection to nature, and spas that embrace biophilic design principles harness this bond to create calming, restorative spaces. From natural light and organic materials to indoor gardens and water features, biophilic elements reduce stress and boost wellbeing.
Sophia Reynolds, Head of Design at Six Senses Hotels Resorts Spas, shares, “We incorporate local flora, natural stones, and flowing water elements that mirror the surrounding landscape. Guests tell us the connection to nature helps them unplug and feel grounded from the moment they step inside.”
Modern spas are moving beyond one-size-fits-all design to environments that adapt to individual guest needs. From adjustable lighting and temperature to multi-sensory rooms that tailor soundscapes and aromas, personalization enhances comfort and immersion.
At the Miraval Austin, spa suites offer customizable environments with controls for light color, intensity, and scent diffusion. Wellness Director James O'Neill explains, “We want every guest to feel the space is designed just for them-whether they want calming lavender or energizing citrus, gentle sounds or silence.”
Technology is becoming an invisible yet vital layer in spa design, supporting wellness goals without distracting from the natural ambiance.
Wearables, biometric sensors, and AI-driven wellness apps allow spas to monitor guests' real-time physiological responses and tailor treatments accordingly. Design-wise, this means discreet spaces for charging devices, integrated screens for guided meditation, and subtle lighting that changes with circadian rhythms.
Today's wellness seekers value connection and community alongside solitude. Spa design is evolving to include spaces that encourage social interaction, education, and group wellness activities.
For example, the new Aman New York integrates a community wellness hub with yoga studios, juice bars, and relaxation lounges designed to foster connection. Aman Spa Director Minna Eppstein states, “Our guests want spaces that nourish not only body but social wellbeing. Designing versatile spaces that can host workshops, gatherings, or quiet reflection is key.”
Such communal zones broaden the spa's appeal and foster a holistic approach to wellbeing.
Sustainability is no longer optional. Leading spas integrate eco-friendly materials, energy-efficient systems, and water conservation into their very fabric.
The Six Senses brand is a pioneer in this space, designing spas with reclaimed woods, natural paints, and solar-powered heating systems. “Our guests appreciate our commitment to the environment; it's part of their healing journey,” notes Sophia Reynolds.
Beyond materials, sustainability includes waste reduction and sourcing local organic productspractices that reinforce authentic, health-centered messaging.
6. Cultural and Spiritual Authenticity
Guests increasingly seek not just relaxation but meaningful connection. Designing spas that respect and reflect local culture and spiritual traditions creates a deeper guest experience.
At the Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan, traditional Balinese healing rituals are central to the spa experience. The design includes hand-carved woodwork and sacred symbols, creating a space where culture and spirituality come alive.
As Spa Manager Putu Arya says, “Our spa is a gateway to Balinese wisdom. The environment honors that, inviting guests to immerse themselves fully.”
Authenticity fosters trust and emotional resonance, vital for long-term guest loyalty.
The future of spa design is holistic, intentional, and guest-centered. By weaving together nature, technology, culture, and community, spas can create spaces that do more than look beautiful-they actively heal, inspire, and connect.
As designer Sophia Reynolds sums it up, “Great spa design is invisible. It supports every moment of the guest journey without shouting for attention. It feels effortless, safe, and transformative.”
For spa operators, investing in thoughtful design isn't just a luxury-it's a strategic imperative to meet the evolving expectations of wellness travelers and deliver lasting excellence.
The Spa Awards 2025 unfolded in spectacular style at The President Hotel, Cape Town’s iconic Bantry Bay landmark on the 22nd June 2025. With sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean and Lion’s Head, the hotel—revered as “Cape Town’s most loved hotel”—provided a magnificent backdrop for an evening celebrating excellence, innovation, and the future of wellness. Its combination of historic grandeur and contemporary luxury set the perfect stage for an event where elegance met energy, and every detail was designed to delight.
Guests were welcomed into an atmosphere of Parisian chic elegance, where soft candlelight, delicate florals, and subtle golden accents played across luxurious interiors. The hotel’s sweeping terraces, stylish lounges, and thoughtfully curated architectural details created a sense of grandeur and intimacy simultaneously, elevating the evening into an immersive sensory experience. From the polished marble floors to the meticulously dressed tables and glimmering glassware, every element reflected sophistication, making the setting as memorable as the awards themselves.
The culinary journey was equally unforgettable. Guests began with a silky pumpkin and coconut soup, savoured tender, herb-infused lamb shank, and concluded with a perfectly spongy malva pudding. Each course, carefully paired with fine wines, showcased the hotel’s award-winning culinary team and demonstrated an exquisite balance of flavour, presentation, and refinement, ensuring that dining was as celebrated as the awards themselves.
Entertainment added a lively, celebratory layer to the evening, with a live band performing smooth jazz interludes, soulful ballads, and upbeat classics.
Guests brought fashion-forward flair to the evening, turning the ballroom into a runway of jewel-toned gowns, sleek cocktail dresses, tailored suits and statement accessories. Yet amid the glamour, the atmosphere was defined by mutual support and camaraderie. In a competitive industry, peers celebrated one another’s achievements, shared insights, and encouraged emerging talent, demonstrating that the wellness sector thrives on collaboration as much as creativity.

Not long ago, “biohacking” was a fringe term reserved for tech geeks chasing peak performance in obscure ways. Think IV drips, smart drugs, and quantified everything. But today, this once-niche movement is crossing over - and beauty is the newest frontier.
As a wellness entrepreneur and supplement formulator, I've been immersed in the science of cellular health, nutrient synergy, and aesthetic longevity for over a decade. And one truth keeps rising to the top: truly radiant skin doesn't come from a bottle - it begins on a cellular level.
At its essence, biohacking is about upgrading your biology through targeted inputs - nutrition, sleep, light, breathwork, supplements, even your daily routine. It's a blend of ancient wisdom and cuttingedge science designed to help your body work smarter, not harder.
It's not about tech overload or perfection. It's about tuning in, getting curious, and crafting a lifestyle that supports optimal function from the inside out. And when that's directed toward beauty goals? You unlock a whole new level of glow.
The beauty world is undergoing a deep shift. Consumers are no longer content with surface-level fixes. They want solutions that work from within, powered by ingredients that support skin, hormones, and cellular health at the source.
Welcome to the era of beauty biohacking - where functional medicine meets high-performance skincare.
Copper peptides for collagen. Creatine and CoQ10 for mitochondrial youth. Gut-balancing botanicals and hormonal adaptogens. This is the space where I live, create, and formulate.
With My Beauty Luv, I've dedicated my work to crafting supplements that are as elegant as they are effective. We're not just smoothing wrinkles - we're addressing oxidation, glycation, and chronic inflammation at their root.
Every biohacker's toolkit is personal, but here's a snapshot of what's on high rotation in my own routine:
• Hydrolysed Gelatin. Pure, potent, and proven to work at a cellular level.
• Mitochondrial magic . Creapure® Creatine, CoQ10, and raw cacao - all designed to feed your skin's energy engines.
• Beauty sleep enhancers. I use Magnesium bisglycinate, Glycine, and our medical-grade Lion's Mane to support deep, restorative rest.
• Sunlight therapy. Morning light exposure coupled with grounding boosts my mood, skin clarity, reduces inflammation and keeps my circadian rhythm aligned.
• Hormonal flow. I refuse to torture myself and not eat chocolate when it's 'that time of the month'.
I also refuse to put myself under stressful fasting protocols that not only interfere with my hormones but also add stress to my central nervous system. It's about flow and balance and just being kind to myself.
We're entering a future where skincare won't just be applied - it will be ingested, tracked, and
personalised. AI-driven skin analyses, gut-skin axis protocols, mitochondrial-targeted actives, and ingestibles that work with your unique hormonal cycle are just the beginning.
Imagine a serum that syncs with your DNA data or a capsule designed to support your skin and your sleep - based on your wearable's readout. This isn't fantasy. It's the next wave of wellness-driven beauty, and it's already taking shape.
Biohacking beauty is not about chasing unattainable perfection. It's about empowering yourself with knowledge and tools to look - and feel - your best at every level of your biology.
Because when your cells are thriving, your hormones balanced, and your mitochondria firing - that glow becomes effortless.

In a world where health and beauty are intrinsically linked, Asteria Pharma brings forward a powerful and transformative range of wellness supplements under the Rèsa.K Skin Science label. Born from personal resilience and scientific rigor, this range is a testament to the healing power of nature, combined with cutting-edge pharmaceutical technology.
Rèsa.K Skin Science was founded by Resa Kahn-Botha, a lady who knows the battles of chronic illness intimately. After a prolonged fight with Long Covid that left her grappling with a host of debilitating symptoms — from hair loss and body pain to gut disturbances and vertigo — she embarked on a mission to reclaim her health. Drawing from years of experience in product formulation and a deep knowledge of cosmeceutical science, she crafted a range to empower women through life’s ever-changing seasons.
This commitment has materialized in Resa.K’s flagship wellness line, comprising three meticulously developed products: ElixHer, Folligrow, and Recover-Enzyme. Each supplement is designed not only to address specific concerns but to restore harmony to the body, promoting confidence from the inside out.
A Symphony of Inner Beauty and Wellness
ElixHer is the hero product of the range, uniquely tailored for women seeking beauty that radiates from within. More than just a collagen supplement, ElixHer represents a holistic approach to female health, targeting skin, hair, nails, gut health, and even menopausal support.
Collagen, the primary component of ElixHer, plays a vital role in skin elasticity, hydration, and regeneration. With natural collagen production declining by age 18 and decreasing by approximately 1% annually after age 40, replenishing it is essential. ElixHer uses a premium collagen source combined with carefully selected co-factors for enhanced absorption and efficacy.
Key Benefits:
Beauty: Smoother skin texture, reduced wrinkles and cellulite, improved hydration and elasticity, and enhanced hair and nail strength.
Health: Supports gut lining and digestion, promotes wound healing, boosts bone strength, and alleviates menopausal symptoms.
Highlighted Ingredients:

Vitamin B3 (Niacin): Known for improving skin tone and hydration, and reducing signs of aging.
Probiotic 5-Strain Complex & Oligofructose Prebiotic: These enhance gut microbiota, essential for nutrient absorption and skin clarity.
ElixHer is the ultimate beauty supplement for women who desire both aesthetics and vitality, offering cellular nourishment that reflects outwardly in radiance and well-being.

digestive issues to fatigue and sluggish recovery. With Recover-Enzyme, Rèsa.K Skin Science brings forward a potent, natural solution designed to calm inflammation, accelerate healing, and restore the body’s equilibrium.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is no longer science fiction - it's here, reshaping how we live, work, and care for ourselves. As Arianna Huffington observes, the challenge isn't just technology evolving rapidly, but how we grow alongside it, especially when it comes to health and wellbeing.
For spas, where healing and personal transformation are central, AI offers exciting ways to close the gap between what clients know is good for them and what they actually do.
Here are 10 essential insights - blending expert opinions and research - to help spa professionals harness AI for enhanced wellness and business success.
Arianna Huffington highlights that much of today's AI narrative is confined to tech insiders, often focusing on fear or job loss. Meanwhile, the public feels more concerned than excited. A Pew Research poll found only 25% of adults feel AI will benefit them personally, while 51% express worry.
But as mindfulness pioneer Dr. Deepak Chopra reminds us, “Technology is only useful when it helps us awaken our inner wisdom and compassion.” For spas, the AI story should be about empowering clients on their wellness journeys - not replacing human connection but enhancing it.
Wellness is about holistic growth - body, mind, and spirit. Arianna notes we're wired to evolve into our best selves. Dr. Andrew Weil, a leader in integrative medicine, echoes this: “True health is the balance of physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing.”
AI-powered personalized nudges - for meditation, sleep hygiene, or nutrition - can extend the spa experience beyond the treatment room, supporting clients in becoming healthier and more centered every day.
AI develops at lightning speed, but so should our capacity to use it wisely. Investing in human skills to navigate AI tools is vital. A recent study in the Journal of Medical Internet Research shows that digital health literacy boosts the effectiveness of AI-driven health apps, increasing adherence and positive outcomes.
Spa teams who learn to use AI analytics can better tailor treatments and engage clients - turning data into deeper empathy and care.
Despite mountains of research on diet, exercise,
sleep, and stress, behavior change remains the biggest hurdle. AI shines here: a 2023 review in Nature Digital Medicine found AI-based coaching apps significantly improved user health behaviors through timely, personalized feedback.
Spas can leverage this by integrating AI-driven lifestyle coaching apps or devices, helping clients bridge the gap between what they know and what they do.
Scientific progress is astounding - yet global rates of chronic disease, depression, and anxiety rise. Arianna warns that better tech doesn't equal a better life. Wellness pioneer Jon Kabat-Zinn emphasizes, “Technology is a tool, not a solution. Mindfulness and presence remain irreplaceable.”
Spas must balance AI-driven innovation with authentic human connection and mindful practices.
AI's promise isn't just efficiency. As Arianna notes, it can fuel a modern-day Renaissance - enhancing creativity, inner exploration, and connection to art and nature. Research at Stanford's Center for Compassion and Altruism Studies supports this: digital tools that incorporate art, music, and nature prompts reduce stress and boost wellbeing.
Imagine AI-curated soundscapes or virtual nature retreats customized to client moods - perfect complements to spa therapies.
Rather than fearing AI dominance, Arianna stresses the bigger risk is humans falling behind in empathy, creativity, and compassion. This aligns with Daniel Goleman's work on emotional intelligence, showing these traits are essential for thriving in an AI-driven world.
Spas offer fertile ground to nurture these qualities - combining AI's insights with skilled human touch.
Compassion isn't fixed; it grows with intention. As Solzhenitsyn wrote, “The line separating good and evil… passes right through every human heart.” Studies in neuroscience reveal empathy can be strengthened through practice and feedback.
AI-powered client feedback systems and reflective tools can help spa professionals deepen their emotional attunement and client rapport.
Current tech often exploits negative emotionsanger, fear, jealousy - especially on social media. Arianna calls for building tech ecosystems that
enhance our “better angels.” Positive psychology research underscores the benefits of tools that promote gratitude, kindness, and social connection.
Your spa can leverage AI-driven wellness apps to reinforce these positive states, both for clients and staff.
Most chronic illnesses are lifestyle-related. Arianna's insight: “Health is also what happens between doctor visits.” AI-powered wearables and apps can monitor sleep, stress, and activity in real time, delivering personalized support daily.
Spas can integrate these insights to create seamless wellness experiences that extend far beyond the treatment room, encouraging sustainable lifestyle change.
At its best, AI can help us rediscover ourselves. As Arianna says, “AI can know us better than we know ourselves,” guiding us toward what truly nourishes us physically, mentally, and spiritually.
By blending this technology with ancient wisdom and skilled human care, spas can craft deeply personal journeys that inspire lasting transformation.
If you run a spa, you already know the drill: every day is a blur of managing staff, juggling bookings, pleasing guests, and keeping operations smooth. But here’s the thing—amid the chaos, the most dangerous threat to your bottom line is often the one you don’t see.
Christopher Terleski, who has spent over 25 years advising hotels, restaurants, and spas, calls it the void. It’s not a mysterious business term—it’s the simplest, most obvious problem in the world: empty slots on your booking calendar.
And yet, it’s the problem that silently drains thousands from spa profits every single year.
Picture your spa on a quiet Tuesday morning. Your therapists are ready, your treatment rooms are prepared, the candles are lit, and the air smells faintly of essential oils. But the clock is ticking and there’s no guest in the room.
You’re paying salaries, keeping the lights and heating on, and the rent isn’t going anywhere. The only thing missing is the revenue that slot could have earned.
Now multiply that one gap across the week, across all your rooms, across the entire year—and suddenly you’re staring at one of your biggest financial leaks.
Even a spa with a healthy 65% occupancy rate has 35% of its potential earning hours going to waste. And unlike adding new services or expanding your space, filling those hours costs you almost nothing— because your fixed costs are already covered.
When an accountant tells you your salary bill is too high or your electricity costs are climbing, they’re
pointing out symptoms. The root cause, in many cases, is that those costs are being carried by too few paying customers.
And here’s the trap: because reports and profit analyses often come months later, you only see the problem after it’s already drained your profits.
That’s why Terleski recommends thinking like a doctor before making big changes. A doctor doesn’t guess— they scan. For spas, that “scan” is looking closely at your live booking patterns to find exactly where the emptiness is.
Some voids are obvious:
• Mid-morning lulls when hotel guests are off sightseeing.
• Midweek afternoons when locals are still at work.
Others hide in plain sight:
•A one-hour gap between two appointments that makes the therapist’s first treatment barely profitable.
•An underused couple’s room that sits empty while singles fill the other rooms.
Here’s where it gets exciting—because you don’t need a big marketing budget to fix the void. You just need to be proactive and creative.
1. Upsell in the moment
If a guest books a 60-minute massage and you see an empty slot after it, offer them an extra 30 minutes at a reduced rate. It’s far easier to sell to someone already in the spa than to find a brand-new client.
2. Create time-specific offers
Design promotions for those exact hours you know
are slow. For example, “Early Bird Glow” facials between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. at 20% off.
3. Shift start times
Don’t be afraid to adjust appointments by 15–30 minutes to close gaps. Guests rarely mind—especially if there’s a small perk like a complimentary beverage or product sample.
4. Package with purpose
One spa Terleski worked with transformed their dead Sunday afternoons into their most profitable slot with a “Sunday Unplug” package: spa access, dinner, overnight stay, and breakfast.
Here’s the uncomfortable truth: the real risk isn’t in trying to fill the void—it’s in ignoring it.
Empty hours don’t just cost you today’s revenue; they keep your effective fixed costs high, making your spa less competitive and leaving less room for reinvestment.
When you fill more hours, you:
•Lower your cost per treatment
•Boost morale (therapists prefer being busy)
• Create a more vibrant, energetic atmosphere that guests can feel
Some managers try to fix profitability with loyalty cards or stamp schemes. But true loyalty doesn’t come from discounts—it comes from delivering an unforgettable experience. If a guest leaves feeling extraordinary, they’ll come back without needing a coupon to remind them.
