Presidents’Podium

I (Ruth Anne) often have said that the days are long, but the years go fast and that is how I feel about being president or co-president of this wonderful and inspiring Congregation While I had a lot to learn when I first became President in 2007: I never had heard the term HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning); and our administrator Hadas resigned to take another job shortly after I became President, these past years have flown by day by day by day. Having the opportunity to work closely with my current co-president, Marty Abschutz, has been fun, interesting and I have learned a lot. But here we are beginning another (my last) year as any type of president except past president. I wear a button on my jacket that says “Stop me before I volunteer again;” almost every time I come home from CBT, Paul asks me in a humorous way if I had my button on.
As Rosh Hashanah is close, it brings back some memories. My father of blessed memory, was the Ba’al Tikiah and as he was leaving to go to shul, that is how he woke us up to tell us to get moving I do miss that sound resonating through our home
For me (Marty), the High Holy Day season represents a time of reflection and renewal Each of us can reflect on the past year: what we did that feels like an accomplishment; what we did that we can make a better effort towards in the coming year This reflection can take many shapes, from personal relationships to various other commitments we have made
The companion to that reflective opportunity is that it gives each of us an opportunity to renew our commitment to what is important to us. What could we have done during the past year that would have created a better outcome towards fulfilling each commitment? Do we need to repair relationships, for example? At the same time, it affords us an opportunity to identify new commitments. Was there some thing or some idea that we came across by happenstance, accident or intent that has piqued our interest enough to make a commitment towards learning more or pitching in to make that thing better? Do we have the right balance in our various commitments?
In either case (existing or new commitment), how can we implement the idea or action that would enable us to learn more, repair a relationship or improve our commitment? These are among the many thoughts I have during the High Holy Days I think that many of us have similar thoughts and feelings during this time We are not alone
We (Ruth Anne and Marty) look forward to seeing you whenever and wherever If that happens to be during the High Holy Days, we should greet each other knowing that we are not alone as Jews living in the United States at this time
From our families and us to your families and you: L’Shanah Tov Tikateivu and may you all be inscribed in the book of life for a good and healthy new year.
Ruth Anne and Marty

Cantor’s Corner
Cantor Bruce Rockman
Twenty Five years ago, on Friday evening, August 3, 2001, I lead Kabbalat Shabbat and I became the “New Official Cantor” of B’nai Tikvah The service went well enough, there was a nice crowd of congregants and well wishers and I was nervous, my voice cracking a little like a bar mitzvah boy Although we were well acquainted, that night and the relationships that were beginning to develop changed my life forever. Becoming a spiritual leader is an enormous responsibility and has been an awesome experience.
I thank everyone involved in my transformation, especially G-d for making certain that my path would be filled with life lessons. I abundantly thank, my parents and siblings who love/d me, guided me and picked me up when I slipped. My teachers were patient and generous as they helped me learn more than I thought was possible for me to comprehend. I am grateful to my many colleagues, rabbis, cantors, clergy, friends, school, office staff and CBT leadership, who thoughtfully guided my congregational journey, sharing their experiences and who helped me navigate, to understand my professional responsibilities as one of them.
I began my CBT journey as a member of the congregation, then a teacher, a board member, ritual chairperson, then cantor and the leader of the Sons of Tikvah Band I am the sum of all of my CBT experiences, all inspiring the meaningful relationships that I have with you today and I pray that I’ve been good to you
I’ve worked hard and love what I’ve had the opportunity to become, but there is just NO WAY that my deeds these last 25 years could have been remotely possible without the love of my life, Stacey We are our best, together. Our children make us proud and confident that our lives together have been the most wonderful journey that we could dream of.
On Friday evening, August 1, 2025, I began my 25th year as the “Long Time Cantor” of B’nai Tikvah, with Camp Shabbat, Kabbalat Shabbat in my backyard. Stacey made sure that everyone was happy and comfortable; Bashe and Rafi helped me (took over) leading the service. It was a magical Shabbat, we had a full yard of CBTers from 3 to 93! I’m so glad that so many of us, over 80 congregants were able to worship together, with joy and gladness! We sang, we noshed and strengthened relationships with friends and with G-d. It was a very special Shabbat, and we will do this again.
I am grateful, I look forward to many exciting opportunities to gather this year, including L’dor Vador with Rick Recht, I dream of a Sons of Tikvah Band- Reunion Concert, the Falafel Ball and the annual Second Seder Most of all I’m looking forward to hearing your voices loud and clear during the high holidays
Ivdu et Hashem b’simcha Worship Adonai with Joy & Gladness!
Wishing You a Sweet and Healthy New Year. Cantor Bruce Rockman

Teacher Tidbits
Ronit Bivas.Director of Education
Immersed in Israel
As I enjoy a meaningful visit to Israel, I find myself deeply moved by the land that holds such profound importance for the Jewish people. Even though I’m here on vacation, each moment is reinforcing the very heart of my work back home as the Education Director. Being in Israel is reminding me just how vital it is that we share this country’s remarkable story with the next generation.
Israel is a living testament to resilience, hope, and the enduring spirit of our people. Whether walking through the ancient streets of Jerusalem or taking in the vibrant energy of Tel Aviv, I’m surrounded by a nation that has overcome incredible challenges and continues to flourish The Israeli flags flying proudly in every direction are not just symbols of a country—they represent unity, sacrifice, strength, and a deep-rooted connection to our heritage.
What’s especially powerful is how Israel connects us historically as Jews. This land is where our ancestors walked, prayed, dreamed, and rebuilt From the patriarchs and matriarchs to modern-day pioneers, the story of Israel is inseparable from the story of the Jewish people It is the thread that binds generations across centuries, linking our ancient past to our vibrant present, and to our future
As we prepare to begin a new school year, I’m more inspired than ever to bring these experiences home; to guide our teachers in creating learning opportunities that reflect both the rich history and dynamic present of Israel We have a unique opportunity to help our children see Israel not just as a place on a map, but as a central part of their Jewish identity and a living connection to our collective past
Together with our dedicated teaching staff, I look forward to developing lessons that will spark curiosity, build pride, and encourage meaningful connections to Israel. Through engaging, thoughtful, and ageappropriate learning, we can ensure our students not only learn about Israel, but feel deeply connected to it, carrying that connection beyond the classroom and into the world
I look forward to this exciting new year of learning and growth. Best wishes to you and your families for a Shana Tovah U’Metukah a happy and sweet 5786! L’shalom, Ronit Bivas

Administrative Notes!
Scott Kessler,VP Administration
As September arrives, we are all preparing for change. For those of us with younger children, a new school year is about to begin. All of us are getting ready to put away our swimsuits and summer clothes and begin the transition into fall And here at CBT, preparations have been in high gear for months, getting ready for the High Holidays.
There are many moving parts that all come together in order for our High Holiday services to go off without a hitch, but everyone can help in their own way
First, please be sure to bring your High Holiday ticket to all services on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur For the safety and security of all attendees, tickets are required for entry at all services. Everyone will be required to show their ticket, each time they enter the synagogue during the High Holidays. Anyone who arrives without a ticket will be subject to additional security screening, so please remember your tickets, and have them ready to show at the door
If you have friends or family who need a guest ticket, please contact the office immediately to make those arrangements, if you haven’t already done so. The deadline to register for guest tickets is Friday, September 12 at 12pm. There are many opportunities to volunteer at CBT during the High Holidays If you are interested in helping out in any way, please contact the office at office@bnaitikvah.org, and someone will contact you.
If you are not able to join us for services in person, all services will be available to view online. The stream of our services is password protected, and the password can be found in the weekly announcement email that goes out every Thursday.
Our hope is that every member and guest has a meaningful experience, whether you attend services in person or online. If you have any questions while you are at CBT during the High Holidays, please seek out an usher or a Board member for assistance.
Wishing everyone a Happy and Healthy New Year!

Get to Know Our Advertisers!
Lesley Lewkowicz,Executive Director
We are so appreciative of our advertisers and their support We’re starting a new feature, where every month, we’ll headline one of our advertisers, sharing a bit of who they are, what their business is all about, and maybe even a bit of their backstory!
The first business we’re featuring is Martine, Katz, Scanlon, and Schimmel, PA , a full service Family Law Firm As quoted on their website: “At Martine, Katz Scanlon & Schimmel, PA , our attorneys have trial experience in all aspects of matrimonial and family law Each attorney manages her own clientele while also utilizing a team approach to ensure individualized attention and the highest quality service. Martine, Katz Scanlon & Schimmel, P.A., provides personalized service to our clients while also providing the benefit of multiple attorneys’ opinions, input and experience. Each client will receive the individualized attention of a small law firm and enjoy enhanced resources akin to a larger law firm
Our attorneys offer an individualized approach to educate clients and accomplish their unique goals as efficiently as possible. We help clients achieve their best tomorrow, even if today is uncertain.”
For those of you who may not know, the “Schimmel” in the practice is none other than our very own Diana (Schimmel) Avena, who, along with her husband Rocco, and two beautiful daughters, Vivian and Violet, are members of our synagogue Diana jumped right in and became an active member of our shul, not only joining the board as a trustee, but jumping on the Strategic Planning Committee, and now chairs that committee.
In addition to her volunteerism at B’nai Tikvah, Diana is active in the outside community, as well. She is the co-founder of the Young Professionals Council of The Field Center for Children’s Policy, Practice and Research and of the Adoption Professionals Council of HelpUsAdopt org She is a member of the Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, New Jersey, Burlington and Mercer County Bar Associations, all in their family law subdivisions. She also volunteers with the Philadelphia Volunteers for the Indigent Program, The Montgomery Child Advocacy Project, The Support Center for Child Advocates and The Women’s Resource Center.
She has been selected for inclusion in Pennsylvania Super Lawyers’ annual Rising Stars List since 2014, and she was named a Lawyer on the Fast Track by The Legal Intelligencer – a prestigious award she earned as one of its youngest recipients. Diana was also listed as a Top Family Law Attorney by Philadelphia Life Magazine every year since 2014, and she was named Best Overall Advocate by the Widener Intensive Trial Advocacy Program.
How lucky and proud are we to have someone with these credentials in our shul!
Thank you for supporting our Jewish community, by being an advertiser and advocate for the Jewish community!

Does the name Aaron Feuerstein ring a bell? If you seek inspiration during the weeks of selfreflection as we approach the days of awe, or all year round, then you want to learn from Mr Feuerstein, zichrono levracha Aaron, an Orthodox Jew, was born in Brookline, Massachusetts to Hungarian parents In 1956 he became CEO of his grandfather’s knitting mill, Malden Mills, after working there for several years post college.
Two weeks before Christmas in 1995 the company’s factory complex caught on fire and was destroyed His 1400 employees were out of work, but guided by Jewish tradition, he continued to pay all of them for 90 days He is quoted as saying, “When all is moral chaos, this is the time for you to be a mensch” He could have taken the insurance money, closed the business, and retired very comfortably at age 70. But no, he used the insurance money to rebuild the factory, and it reopened a year later.
In a magazine interview in 1996 he said his Talmud study was the impetus for his actions ” I have a responsibility to the worker, both blue-collar and white-collar I have equal responsibility to the community It would have been unconscionable to put 3,000 people on the streets and deliver a deathblow to the cities of Lawrence and Methuen. Maybe on paper our company is worth less to Wall Street, but I can tell you it's worth more.” The company struggled and filed for bankruptcy twice until closing permanently in 2007.
Many things in life have potential that must be actualized, but we have to do something to bring them alive It’s only when we see that the person sitting across from us is made in the image of G-d, and recognize the holy potential of that individual, that we have the ability to become holy ourselves. Our actions elevate us to a holy level. Keep your eyes open, seek potential, and act.
I wish you a blessed and purposeful 5786
B’yachad, together, we can make a difference, Laura
