Brian T. Shirley Here are a few Poe c Stories that I wrote awhile back. The Long‐Haired Guy from Chicago The bus was late but he couldn't wait so he extended his thumb into the air Thirty minutes was heavy But up pulled a Chevy He got in and pulled back his hair The conversa on was long and the engine was strong now all he need do is decide where to go His life parallels the road But it's never too big a load He's the long haired guy from Chicago The Game It had been years since I saw Frank he was a bit heavier, but his eyes were just the same We nodded "Hello, how are you?" grabbed a table in the back and se led into our game I ra led off the names of seventeen women explaining my adventures with each and everyone Frank sipped his beer, drew a sigh reached into his pocket and pulled out a gun

What’s the Story?™ Share it! Page 3

Poetic stories He spoke " If my tale of one woman doesn't overwhelm you You can take this gun and end my days." "Or if you can't believe the words I'm about to deliver, once again, this gun will lead the way" He con nued "She and I talked for days, we laughed for weeks, for months we held, our love knew no fears." "But the most intense part of our souls merging was not leaving the bedroom for nearly two years" I grabbed the gun, shot Frank twice and ran out of the bar as he was dying I figured I would find this incredible woman for myself or good ole Frank was lying!!

Not trusting his lawyer to get him acquitted of the murder charge he faces, Jonas decides to run, taking his dog to flee the country on an old fishing boat under an assumed identity. The heart‐and‐guts career of a California firefighter whose good days saw children saved and bad days saw loved ones lost. In this sometimes humorous, sometimes heartrending memoir, Ashby rises from lowly recruit at Pasadena to battalion chief with the Los Angeles County Fire Department. He recounts with authentic detail the horrific incidents that firefighters encounter. More revealing is how Ashby coped psychologically during grueling 56‐hour workweeks. He describes a mental filing cabinet where he stashed the terrible things I’ve seen that would otherwise scar my soul. Available at LeRue Press and online at amazon.com.

Richard G. Pugh I spent over an hour listening to CDs of my favorite ar sts… and really got confused when no ma er what I did I could not get their ‘flip side’ songs to play. My eight track machine can now play two or more songs at the same me. What‘s up with that? I asked this strange person named “Siri….How can I learn to play a digeridoo and she told me to “Shut up”! Undaunted by that comment I asked her for some more advice. “Siri, where can I buy my wife a new bathing suit? The last one I bought her has a hole in the knee”? Same response….”Oh, Just shut up!” I ran across some interes ng new words recently and thought I’d try them out. I told a lady at a cocktail party, “You look absolutely porcine tonight and I’d bet you dance bovinely!” I remember she smiled and thanked me! Only a er I got home and looked up that pair of well inten oned ‘compliments’ did I realize I had told her she looked like a pig and she would probably dance like a cow. I went to an Aces ball game last week and no ced this foul ball kept ge ng bigger….then it hit me! When I was a kid my teacher asked me to draw a ring on the black board. I asked, “Do you want a round one?” She

I quietly commented: “My Dad is a boxing coach and he says the rings he deals with are all square!” That same teacher asked me a math ques on: “If you have five apples and give me two. How many are le ? I answered, “Five apples.” She sent me to the principal’s office. I thought I was giving a compliment to an old friend who had served in Viet Nam and survived mustard gas and pepper spray. I was impressed and congratulated him on being a Seasoned Veteran!” He looked at me curiously. Will someone please tell me the difference between flammable and inflammable and why is it wri en on the back of some trucks? I’ll end this self‐depreca ng piece on that ques on. April Voytko Kempler Pine nuts are pricey because they are handpicked. But if you happen to visit the Virginia City Highlands, Nevada then you can go out and pick your own pine nuts and save money. According to Reno resident Kathy D. in late September or early October, after the first freeze, the pine cones from the Pinion Pine tree release tiny nuts nestled inside its scales. Each year Kathy drives to the Highlands with her granddaughter and hunts for pine nuts. Kathy warns that mountain lions searching for wild horses as prey are frequently roaming the area, so she recommends keeping a careful eye on the terrain. The Pinion Pine (Pinus pinea) is a stocky pine tree, scrubby and flatShelled Pine Nuts topped it might be confused for a bush rather than a tree. But, the tiny nut it bears makes the Pinion Pine a valuable tree to seek. Once the pine cones are gathered and the brown seeds are picked out, put them in a pot of salted, boiling water for a minute, just enough to blanch. Then place them on a paper towel to dry.

Pine nut hunting in the Virginia City Highlands Inside the hard brown shell lays the creamy pine nut kernel. In one season up to twenty-pounds of pine nuts can be yielded. Another Reno resident, Katherine N. whose husband studied to be a forest ranger, said, “Pine nuts are one of the most nutritious nuts you can eat. If you were stranded in the woods somewhere, pine nuts would be the perfect food.” Pine nuts are high in the good kind of fat, antioxidants, and fiber. They also help decrease the appetite. Why not try hunting pine nuts yourself? Along the way you might catch a glimpse of the shy bobcat or, view a herd of Nevada’s magnificent wild horses. Paul Goyette A na ve Californian, April Kempler was raised in beau ful downtown Burbank. April currently resides in her "adopted" city of Reno, Nevada. April Kempler's first book en tled The Altered I, is a first‐person narra ve about her father‐in‐law's experiences as a Holocaust survivor. April is an avid reader, a habit she picked up as a child. Mitch Smith, PT, DPT, CWC Is your freedom restricted by pain? Freedom is what this na on hangs its hat on. We celebrate it every year. We all desire freedom to live the life we want. However, sadly our freedom to truly do what we desire is o en restricted by our health. Among our health concerns, nothing is restric ng Americans more than pain. Sure we all experience pain, but tens of millions of us are actually living in pain. According to the American Academy of Pain Medicine, chronic pain affects near 100 million people na onwide. That is more than heart disease, stroke, cancer, and diabetes combined!

Are you or a loved one currently experiencing persistent or recurring pain? It could be in your back, knees, hips, shoulders, neck, or all over. It could be from arthri s, fibromyalgia, an injury, or a poorly condi oned body. But the pain is likely restric ng your freedom to do the things you love or spend quality me with others. Chronic pain is o en misunderstood and mistreated. This is because of its complexity. New models of pain are arising that tell us pain is an individually unique experience and affected by body, mind, and lifestyle factors. Understanding this whole‐picture explana on of pain is causing a small minority of health care professionals to take a new approach to managing it.

Through this approach, you learn to calm your pain and get back to doing the things you love. You regain power to heal through educa on about how pain actually works. You are given techniques to then decrease your pain sensi vity. You gradually learn important and enjoyable movements again. You examine lifestyle factors contribu ng to your pain and develop strategies to change them. This finally puts YOU back in control! The answer to true recovery is not in the hands of any provider or so‐called healer. It lies within you. It is your pain, your body, your mind, and your life. You can and should take back control of it! You can become your own healer. You can have your freedom back. If you want to learn more about the science of pain and healing using this model known as "bio‐psycho‐ social", I will be teaching a FREE introductory course on Thursday, September 29th at 5:30 pm at 1055 W Moana Ln, #204 (behind Nevada State Bank). You can also receive a FREE report that answers common pain concerns by subscribing to my blog, wellnessisfreedom.com. Feel free to ask me any ques ons there. Together, we can change our na on in pain! Mitch Smith is a licensed physical therapist with a Doctorate in physical therapy (DPT) from the University of Nevada – Las Vegas. reason tle insurance was created. Title companies perform a search on your property to determine if there may have been fraud, forgeries, mistakes in the record, liens, easements, rights of way and other rights or even undisclosed heirs. These are commonly known as tle defects. Problems are then fixed or “cured”, o en without the knowledge of the consumer or lender. Title insurance is a “contract in which the tle insurance company…protects against future losses resul ng from defects in the tle to real property that exist at the me of purchase but are unknown or undisclosed.” Of course, there is a cost involved. The good news? You only pay the premium once for the life of the loan. It is important to note that you are not buying homeowners insurance. Title insurance

protects you from future losses but for events that have already happened. If you are buying or refinancing your home and borrowing money to do it, your lender will probably require tle insurance. When your loan officer receives condi ons or terms of closing, tle insurance will undoubtedly be one of those condi ons. Tomi Fra o, a loan officer at Interna onal City Mortgage in Reno, NV, tells her clients the story about a friend she knows that found, when building a fence on their property, that they had the wrong lot numbers! The tle company insured the wrong property because of the error in lot numbers. Despite the mistake, tle insurance protected the homeowner and the error was corrected (cured). In Nevada, you have a choice of tle agencies. Although your real estate agent or loan officer may

recommend a par cular agency, Nevada law prohibits them from requiring you to use a par cular firm. Different insurers have different rates for services provided. Obtain recommenda ons from people you trust and if you are in Nevada, check www.nvinsurancealert.com or call toll‐free anywhere in Nevada (888) 467‐4195 to confirm that an insurer is authorized in the state. If you live in another state, check with your trusted loan officer or real estate professional to provide direc on. If you do have a claim, contact your insurer immediately. That means you have to keep the paperwork you receive a er you purchase or refinance your home in a safe place so you can find it when you need it. Insurers are required to either accept or deny your claim within 30 days of receipt. Make sure your paperwork is in order before you sign the bo om line, shop for the best rate from a trusted agency, be sure to verify the effec ve date, ask your agent (if you’re buying a home) who will pay for the tle policies, verify the agency you choose is authorized in Nevada and remember, it’s your choice which agency you choose. But most of all, enjoy your home. You worked hard to buy it so do what you can to protect it.
