Maria Paris, Multi-Talented Actress, Producer, Writer

would like to welcome Maria Paris to the BTS Entertainment Corner. I have had the pleasure of watching Maria perform stand-up in a comedy competition I was hosting. Not only is she a very funny lady, she's also a wonderful actress, producer and writer. Here are a few roles she's known for: Nancy Sinatra Sr. in the award-winning featured film Frank & Ava; her portrayal of the fast-talking waitress in Don’t Judge Me which won Best Comedy at the 2018 Miami Film Festival; her multicharacter comedy series Rita Guida Show with the high heel wielding mafia hit woman Rita and 3 additional distinctly quirky characters; and the Blue Bulleteer in the AC Comics series Blue Bulleteer: Captured by the Cloak. 1) Congrats on all your success Maria! Let's begin with how you got started. What got you into acting, writing and producing? When I was in kindergarten I was cast as the Cheshire cat in the play Alice in Wonderland. I studied all my lines with my Ma, but on performance day I forgot them all as soon as got on stage. Now mind you, I was only 4 1/2 years old at the time, but I was so mad at myself that I did not impress the audience. I went back to my seat, instead of sitting down; I intentionally slipped off my chair and fell to the floor. Everyone laughed at me…and so it began. By fifth grade, I was writing and producing puppet shows for the class with my friends, and then school plays, piano recitals, dance recitals, color guard, and even began telling jokes keeping the kids laughing on ski bus trips.

BTS Entertainment Corner

2) You also do standup. I started over 25 years ago in a Comedy Workshop. Where did you get your comedy chops honed at, an open mic, comedy/improv class, someone's living room? I was performing as Tina Vitale in the offBroadway show, Tony and Tina’s Wedding in Orlando, Florida in 2003. One night in the crowd, the owner of the Rivership Romance Cruise Line asked me to run the Eco Nature Tour on his boat. He wanted me to make it funny and gave me 10 pages of factual nature information. I ran with it and within in a short time it became known as the Maria Comedy Nature Tour. I performed on the ship for four years with a lot of repeat customers. It was amazing and everyone kept asking me where I performed stand up! It wasn’t until I started struggling as an actress in Los Angeles that I even thought about it. I studied under the amazing Jodi Miller, comedian and Head Content Producer of the TV series Funny You Should Ask on CBS. She guided me and really helped me not only write comedy but to find my own voice. 3) I love your character "Rita Guida" and I think it's a great series. Where did you get the inspiration for Rita and tell us what's going on with the series now; I hear you have big things on the horizon! The inspiration for Rita Guida was indirectly started by the talented director, Dennis Dugan (Happy Gilmore, I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry, and GrownUps). I was working a promotional liquor event and I was joking with the customers about my job woes. Dennis approached me and said he felt compelled to help me. I (Continued on page 5)

gave him my business card and later that night he texted me and advised me to “IMDB” him and then I saw it. The huge list of big movie credits as a director and actor. I called him immediately. He told me that I had talent that you cannot teach and that as cliché as it sounded to not wait for my agent to get me out there but to create. Don’t wait, create! The very next night my friend Karen May, the comedian who help me start booking my stand-up gigs, sat down and started to figure out what we could create. Fortunately, I have had years of improv between Tony & Tina’s Wedding Show, Dreamland Productions MurderWatch Mystery Touring Theatricals, and Groundings in Los Angeles. By the end of the evening we wrote a oneminute sketch comedy and came up with a parody to the State Farm commercials. “Like a good Guida, Rita is there”. Dennis loved it and then began guiding me and critiquing each show to make it better. After three pilot episodes, Karen and I separated. Fortunately, we are still friends. The show became known as the, “Rita Guida Show” a two-minute sketch comedy show. It’s based on a New York-big hearted Italian hitwoman who solves everything with a shoe and a trunk. I play four of the many characters in the show including one my own Ma didn’t recognize me as! I found producers and crew to jump on board to make my show come to life. You can watch it currently on YouTube at www.ritaguidashow.com or on the streaming channel E360TV on your Roku or Apple TV or Amazon firestick. Over the past year I have had industry interest, therefore I am happy to announce, I have written a 30minute single camera pilot along with Michael Carson and Ray Carsillo. I am currently in pre-production and have started a Go Fund Me to help with the production costs. If you would like to donate, it is a tax write off and we are accepting any amount. Everyone gets their name in the

credits as follows: Up to $99 a special thanks credit, up to $499 an Associate Producer credit, up to $999 a Producer credit, and donations over $1000 an Executive Producer credit. https://www.gofundme.com/f/rita-guida-pilot 4) As an actress, what do you look for when submitting for a role: great characters, good dialogue, a certain genre and/or style of writing? Yes, yes, and yes. I love comedy and I feel it comes natural to me, but there is nothing like a good meaty dramatic role too, like playing Nancy Sinatra Sr., Frank’s Sinatra’s wife, in the feature film Frank and Ava which is now in select theaters and on Amazon Prime. The most important thing to me is that the character is relatable, and the story is strong. I love all kinds of genres, some of my favorites besides comedy would be detective crime dramas, superhero fiction, science fiction, murder mystery, and romance. I am also being considered for a western with San Rafael Productions in late 2020, so the sky is the limit! 5) Aside from your series, what other projects do you have you'd like people to know about? Past, present and future. Well, the afore-mentioned feature film Frank and Ava, where I played Nancy Sinatra Sr., (Continued on page 6)

Frank’s wife. It was an incredible star filled movie with talented actors like Domenick Lombardozzi (The Wire, Rosewood, and the Irishman as Tony Salerno), Harry D. Stanton, and Eric Roberts. 6) You've been in LA for a while now. Any advice for folks who are thinking of making the big leap out that way to pursue their dream in the Film/TV industry? Hollywood no longer is the only place to make your acting dreams come true. However, if you want to come to Los Angeles, here is what I would advise. First, you need A LOT of money! Los Angeles and even the outskirts are expensive. Please have a substantial savings or a guaranteed job before you get here. You must have a car unless you can handle our unperfected transportation system. Apartment prices are extremely high even if you have a roommate, gas, food, car insurance, apartment insurance, acting classes, etc. You will be marketing yourself a lot. Managers will do more for you then agents most of the time. If you have no credits on your resume come out here while you are young. If you are older it is not impossible, but you will have to hustle harder unless you fit the demographic of what is currently booking. Hone other skills you may have other than acting to make yourself stand out. Go to an accredited school for acting. Join SAG/AFTRA only after you have spent time out here auditioning in front of casting directors as nonunion. 85% or more of the commercials that now come out of Los Angeles are Non-Union. It’s sad but true. Network like Copyright, 2015-2020, LeRue Press. No part of this publication may be copied or reprinted without permission from LeRue Press (LRP).

What’s the Story?

December 2019

TOPIC: Impeachment and the Upcoming Election

The People’s Perspective

It has been a volatile period in history with dramatic splits between people and parties. Rather than maintaining silence, What’s the Story™ would like to contribute some down to earth, people-focused OPINIONS. These do not reflect our view necessarily; they reflect the views of people who identify as one of the parties listed. If you belong to one of these parties, your view might be different than what is expressed. That is to be expected. Writers share their perspective independently and without discussion between them.

WHAT WE ASKED: Impeachment and the upcoming 2020 election: At the time this is being written, it appears the House will impeach the President, Donald J. Trump. If the Senate acquits the President, in your opinion, does it damage President Trump and hurt his chances in the election? Will Americans vote for a President that has been impeached?

Democrat View

T

he goal of WTS (What’s the Story) is to have, at a minimum, perspectives from a Democrat, an Independent and a Republican. Unfortunately, Dennis Whitehead was unable to continue writing for WTS, so we sought other Democrats to take his place. At this time, we have not secured any other Democrat writers; however, we encourage you to ask around or write to us at lrp@lrpnv.com so we can include all sides of our questions.

Behind the Scenes of Impeachment

W

hile your Representative in the House was busy squabbling over a partisan impeachment (I felt the same way about the Clinton impeachment), the 2020 Budget Bill, a $1.3 trillion bill was not being discussed, but was passed, nonetheless. Was that by design? Who knows? Does it matter? Yes, it matters a lot because within the bill that was so hastily passed, (and I repeat, not discussed in the media or otherwise, like maybe on the floor of the House?), within the pages of the bill, according to the National Review include (Continued on page 8)

ull disclosure, I campaigned for Richard Nixon in ’68 & ’72 (I was too young to vote.). I voted for Bill Clinton in ’92 & ’96. (He felt my pain.). I voted for Hillary Clinton in ’16 (I felt her pain.). With the impeachment of Donald Trump in the history books and assuming that the Mitch McConnell lead republican controlled senate will not remove Trump from office … (PAUSE) In 2018 the Trump campaign and Republican, Inc. focused on keeping the senate so that (believing Trump would be impeached) Trump could be protected by a republican led senate. This way, Trump, McConnell and McGahn could continue to fill the lower courts with ultra conservative, comparatively young and often unqualified judges to these lifetime appointments. (PLAY) … the question is “how will this impact the 2020 election?” Can Trump be re-elected? The short answer is “Yes He Can”. (Sorry, Obama). Of course, we still do not yet know who the Democratic Inc. nominee will be. However, we do know that no matter who it is, they will be “painted” (Continued on page 8)

ill fair-minded Americans vote for President Trump after being tarred as impeached? The answer is an astounding YES, more so now than ever. Since our founding as a country, fairness has been an escort in forming our nation and fairness will rule this day. Mark my words though, the corrupt, hate-raging Democrats will rue the day that they decided to fight President Trump, the Republicans and fair-minded Americans under this farce, totally sham and illegal impeachment. Elections have consequences and I predict that not only will the Republicans win back the House in 2020, but that they will keep the Senate with President Trump being re-elected in a landslide! Democrats are seething with hatred and rage and have contracted TDS (Trump Derangement Syndrome) which is a newly discovered disease. It is highly recommended that important decisions NOT be made while afflicted with this debilitating condition, but the unhealthy Democrats are not listening and are pressing forward with impeachment. This impeachment is running along party lines and is NOT bipartisan except against impeaching a sitting (Continued on page 8)

the permanent repeal of three Obamacare taxes, wage increases for federal employees and members of the military (though a good thing, should be discussed), $25 million for federal research into gun violence, and raising the tobacco buying age to 21(but make a kid at 18 sign up for the draft...but God forbid you should smoke- You might die!). You can argue that I am wrong on any of these points and that’s fine. I just wish our legislators would feel that it was worth an argument at all. Our Representatives were able to pass a 2300 page bill without much ado and impeach a President over a phone call with witnesses that were not present (known as hearsay in a traditional courtroom). The Democrats have said they can walk and chew gum. I guess this is what they are referencing. Whether you believe the President is guilty or not, if you were in that position, I suspect you might want to know who accused you and see the evidence they were using. I know I would. In addition to the 2020 Budget Bill, the 2020 National Defense Authorization Act passed (which apparently always does according to one report). It Included an amendment that offered a path to American citizenship for Liberians currently under Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) status. The $768 billion spending package thus prevented the deportation of many Liberians that was set to take place after March 31. It will also provide federal employees with 12 weeks of paid parental leave. So, behind the scenes, apparently a lot was happening. It just seems no one was telling US about it. And it seems to be done at the last minute since they all wanted to go home. I’m a business owner, so I know what it’s like to be on deadline and have to get things done. I just think if they’re going to act like a business, they need to understand how to live within a budget.

as a socialist, corrupt, elite, sexist, racist, puppy kicking, kitten drowning, womanizing (or “manizing” if it’s a woman or Buttigieg), too old, too young (if it’s Buttigieg), baby killing, healthcare stealing, Pelosi loving, god hating, socialist. (I know, I listed “socialist” twice. Wait until you see how often it’s actually and inaccurately used in 2020.) We also know that none of the deficiencies that were revealed in the 2016 election have been addressed. Minority voters are still being oppressed. Voting machines are still vulnerable to hacking. Russians are still tampering with our elections. Social media is still spreading untruths faster than the facts can catch up. The regular news media is still a for profit entity and therefore will be retelling the sensational stories and not telling the rational stories. And if the Democratic Inc. nominee is not an old white man, then the candidate will not get fair treatment in the press. Having said that, I will repeat here what I said to my wife in 2016. “Yes, Trump can win, but he shouldn’t win.” (And bees shouldn’t fly!) I still know this to be true. You see there are more “No more years” voters than “four more years” voters. And this time, reasonable people (actually, if they were truly reasonable, they would have

president with NO evidence of any crime or wrongdoing. A President who has affected our country in a positive manner. A President that has done more for our country than any other president in my lifetime! Since winning the election of 2016, Democrats have boldly announced that they will impeach Trump. Rep. Al Green said that we need to impeach President Trump or he might get re-elected. Rep. Nancy Pelosi denies that this impeachment process is speedy and admitted that it started 2 ½ years ago. The Democrats want to nullify the election of a duly elected President. Big money from corrupt donors is pouring in to their coffers to proceed with impeachment at any cost. For 3 years now, radical Liberals have hijacked the Democrat party and moved them far left. The Democrats abuse of power hurts our country and our country’s image around the world. They cloak themselves in the Constitution when it’s suits their needs and narrative, but in reality, they freely trample our founding document and is using it as a political weapon for a coup. This phony impeachment is setting a toxic precedent as no future president will be immune from this process. The Democrats understand that the Republican controlled Senate will

Yes, impeaching Trump has riled up his base, but his base is a fixed number. And his number is number to facts than the rest of the voters. Trump’s voters got louder and prouder but did not increase in number. Also, this time there is no Comey to deliver the ominous “October surprise”. Can Trump win? YES. Should Trump win? No! (Bees need to fly. Trump doesn’t have to win!) If Trump does win, “the onus is on us”.

NOT convict and remove President Trump from office, especially with NO concrete evidence of wrongdoing. They just want to give him a black eye. Even Al Green remarked that the Democrats will just continue investigating and impeaching. I am totally disgusted by this outrageous abuse of power to our country! When Democrats put their hate and rage foremost instead of the common good, they are betraying our country and our Constitution of the highest order. The evidence clearly shows that whatever the Democrats accuses the President of doing, they are in fact doing themselves. The Democrats need to be held accountable and pay a price for abusing our Constitution in 2020. God help our country in this political nightmare as the swamp continues to fight back!

Another Independent Opinion

Another Republican Opinion

mpeaching a president is a big deal, of course, and is something that should be taken very seriously. Ordinarily, I would say a president’s impeachment would be something that would tarnish a president’s reputation; however, in this case, it doesn’t. It’s clear the impeachment proceedings in the House are an effort for the far left to remove a president with whom they don’t agree. This process started with the Special Council, on which they pinned their hopes of finding something, anything, to remove President Trump. When that failed to show anything, the left had to find something else, which they say they found in a phone call they say is proof of Trump’s wrongdoings. The call was reported to Representative Adam Schiff’s office from a phantom whistleblower, whose information proved to be not reflective of what was found in the transcripts. In the House’s impeachment proceedings, Speaker Pelosi called several witnesses, most of whom were left leaning people with only opinions to offer, and very little in facts. The Ukrainian president himself has said he did not feel he was being blackmailed. Even the transcripts of this supposed damning phone call show a more light-hearted conversation between the two. I won’t go into the details of how Joe Biden got his son, Hunter, a job he wasn’t even close to being qualified for, when Biden was the vice-president. Two wrongs don’t make a right, even if I thought Trump did something wrong. I mention it to show the hypocrisy of the left. In the end, even some of the Democrats voted against impeaching Trump, with absolutely no Republican voting for impeachment. And, now, even after Pelosi and others on the left called Trump an imminent threat to the very heart of our great country, she threatens to hold the impeachment articles from the Senate indefinitely. Not much of a threat, I guess. My guess is Pelosi was pressured so much from the vocal far-left of her party, she decided to roll the dice, and see what would happen. She probably knows there aren’t any strong Democratic candidates to challenge Trump, so the hell with it. So, in answer to the questions: if the Senate does finally get the articles of impeachment, the Senate will acquit President Trump. This will actually improve Trump’s reelection chances, as many Americans will see how the left has made such a ‘solemn’ responsibility in the House a partisan farce. And, I’m actually not a huge fan of Trump; I think he’s crass and boorish. But, this has incensed me enough, as an independent voter, to support him.

A Common Sense View ur fledgling country was in the initial stages of separating from many years of English rule, when the founding fathers found themselves with a daunting task, create a document that would guide the young country, not just in the short run, but for perpetuity. They were prophetic, not only did they design a manuscript for government and its leaders, but they also created a clause that could be used in case those same leaders lost perspective regarding those they governed. The fail-safe system was the impeachment process. A means in which the legislature can bring charges against a civil officer of government, including the president, for "Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors" The threat of impeachment remains a power check, at least in theory, against the abuse of power. Today the impeachment process has been weaponized, and has run astray of the founder’s original intent. “Where you stand on a subject, depends on where you sit,” undoubtedly applies. Prager University, a non-profit organization that creates various political, economic and philosophical topics from an American conservative perspective, stated very succinctly that elections are mainly decided by: The state of the economy, foreign policy and the candidates’ personalities. How will these three objectives effect the next election, and more specifically will Americans vote for a President that has been impeached? The economy: • Under President Trumps watch, the economic growth for the last quarter hit 4.2 percent. The Median household income has hit highest level ever recorded. • New unemployment claims recently hit a 49-year low. More Americans are now employed than ever recorded before in our history, with almost 4 million jobs created since his election. • Manufacturing jobs are growing at the fastest rate in more than three decades, with more than 400,000 manufacturing jobs. • African-American, Hispanic-American, and Asian-American unemployment has recently achieved the lowest rate ever recorded. Women’s unemployment recently reached the lowest rate in 65 years. • Almost 3.9 million Americans have been lifted off food stamps since 2016. • The biggest package of tax cuts and reforms in history. After tax cuts, over $300 billion poured back in to the U.S. in the first quarter alone. Unfortunately, the majority of democrat presidential hopefuls, want to continue the tax and spend policies of the past, with trillions of dollars of new spending for a litany of feel good

KISS KISS

While gazing to starlight ere so bright... Am aroused to the thoughts of the warm, dark night. Between a candle and a star, Your guiding light, is brightest by far. Walking by you unable to decide, You stopped and called me to your side. A memory, a dream, so misty, unclear... I remember a kiss that remains so dear. The touch of your lips, so soft, so sweet, treasuring the memory, my heart’s complete. A smile so sweet, only a lady can render, I wish to hold you so soft and tender. A kiss from those lips that caused me to soar, the thought of your lips, I hunger for more. -FOREVER KNIGHT

I

STORY OF ‘KISS’

worked at Fitzgeralds Casino for 13 years and every year, I would work on New Year’s Eve. I was fortunate enough to know different girls who gave me a kiss on or around midnight. I usually stood on the air curtain of the front entrance overlooking Virginia St., across from Harolds Club where there was a countdown clock and just kitty corner from the Reno Arch where hundreds if not thousands of people were reveling

on the street. After a minute or so, I would go back into work. The last two years I was there, I wasn’t quite sure I was going to get an annual kiss, but I got lucky. I went back inside walking past some ‘21’ or blackjack tables. One of the dealers called me over. There were no players at her table and she reached out with both hands then pulled me closer to her. Happy New Year’s, she said and kissed me. I was surprised and pleased. I don’t remember her name now, but she had a pixie cut of salt and pepper hair. I remember my credit manager complimenting her on it, to me. I was really pleased that I had gotten a kiss that night, so that when I went home, I began writing a poem, called ‘The Kiss’. I do not rhyme very well and usually my writings turn into prose. I had difficulty as usual and put it away. Every once in a while I would get it out and work on it, adding to it and editing it. New Year’s Eve rolled around again and just before work, I got out my poem and changed a few words, completing it. I printed it out, signed it and took it into work with me. That night I looked around for the dealer who had kissed me, almost a year earlier, but she was nowhere to be found. Just before midnight, I went out to the air curtain and watched the countdown and celebration. I returned to work and soon my shift was over. I went downstairs and punched out. While walking down the hallway I saw her and stopped her. I reminded her that last year she had kissed me and I was so taken by her kiss, I went home and wrote a poem for her and that it had taken me a year to get it right, but I had finished it just before I came into work. I handed her the poem and she read it. When she finished reading it, she reached up, put her arms around me, drawing me close and kissed me again. She wished me a Happy New Year’s and walked away. As she was leaving, I shouted to her, “See you next year!” Unfortunately, I changed jobs that year and never saw her again. FOREVER KNIGHT

schemes. Foreign policy: • An historic U.S.-Mexico Trade Deal to replace NAFTA, and negotiations with Canada have been completed. A breakthrough agreement with the E.U. to increase U.S. exports is underway. NATO allies are now spending $69 billion more on defense than in 2016. • Moved the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem. • Withdrew the United States from the job-killing Paris Climate Accord, and from the horrible, one-sided Iran Nuclear Deal. A record number of regulations eliminated. • Disarmament talks still continuing with North Korea. • Construction has started of the southern border wall. The present environment in Washington DC is bitterly divided, and the democrat side of congress has fought each and every one of these accomplishments, without exception. The candidates’ personalities: Personalities are the crux of today’s dilemma. The man who occupies 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue is brash, unrefined, and speaks with a limited vocabulary, however his accomplishments, on many fronts, are numerous. Many voters have difficulty separating “The doer from the deed”. President Trump has a magical way of motivating crowds. Whatever the size of the venue, he packs the auditorium with as many inside as outside. Joe Biden holds the lead over Democratic rivals in the 2020 presidential primary race: He carries his own style of baggage. He is politically refined by a life in politics; however, he is hindered by a plethora with public gaffs. He has difficulty with his temper in front of small groups. Following the presidential polls, released on a daily basis from the left leaning news media, predict the public favoring Joe Biden as the next president. However, the nightly viewer statistics between FOX news and CNN tell a very different story. Fox News continues to lead prime-time audiences, with around 2.68 million viewers. 732,000 for CNN. Three to one in favor of President Trump. Not scientific, but enlightening. Speaker of the house Nancy Pelosi, continues to weaponize the impeachment process with her antics. She, and those of her ilk, have made a mockery of the process. The voting public has not been fooled; she continues to drive up the President’s ratings by her unfounded shenanigans. The impeachment process has not harmed the president. The division between political parties, can best be expressed by the 1930 humorist-philosopher, Will Rogers, known for the views of the "common man" in America: “Everything is changing. People are taking their comedians seriously and the politicians as a joke”.

Understanding Space A Schedules and Reports

n order to have a better flying experience, you need to understand the bolts and nuts of the program. This comes from understanding Flight Schedules and 24Hour Space A Roll-Call Reports. Due to security concerns and mission requirements, prospective flights are released 72 hours (3 days) in advance. After all flights for the day are completed, the passenger terminal will release a 24-Hour Space A Roll-Call Report. Flight schedules and reports are typically found on the terminal’s Face Book page. You do NOT need a Face Book account to view this information. If using the Take A Hop app, which I recommend, choose the AOI (Airfield Of Interest) for your possible departure flight, choose Local Info, then choose Flight Schedules. This will automatically take you to the terminal’s Face Book page. Face Book will ask you to Log In or Create New Account. Just X out of that and scroll down. Be sure to allow the information to load as you slowly scroll down. After scrolling down a short distance, you should see 3 thumbnail images, click on one of these and that schedule will open to a readable size. The first image communicates the schedule for the first 24 hour period. Keep in mind that schedules are subject to change due to maintenance or mission requirements. Roll Call is the time that the terminal will announce who is picked for a flight. You need to mark yourself present at least 1 hour in advance of the roll call time for the preferred flight. Notice how roll call times can change? Destinations can be added or subtracted from the schedule at any time. The number of seats can change as well due to the mission… 19T is tentative while 53F is firm. The Roll-Call Report is critically important in familiarizing yourself with the passenger terminal as it documents the actual flights that took place. Only 2 flights occurred. By analyzing Seats Released and Seats Used, plenty of seats remained available for other fliers. Remember that you are competing for seats and that why Lowest Category, Date & Time Signup, # Pax (passengers) is listed. The second Lowest Category column is actual. Wise Blood by Flannery O’Connor

rad Dourif, who starred in the 1979 film version of “Wise Blood”, had this to say about the screenplay: “I thought it was the weirdest, strangest, coolest thing that I had ever read”—which could serve as a pretty good blurb for the book as well. I say that because “Wise Blood”, the novel, is actually my favorite work of fiction. However, I recommend it with a measure of reserve because it is definitely not for everyone. The plot concerns a young man named Hazel Motes. Recently discharged from the army, he ventures into a city in the Deep South where he means to “do some things I never have done before”. His deeper intention is to prove to himself and to the world that he does not believe in Jesus. Soon he begins a new church which he calls the Church without Christ, “where the blind don’t see and the lame don’t walk and what’s dead stays that way”. But Hazel is a contradiction. He indulges in sin but derives little enjoyment from it. And when he attempts to corrupt the daughter of a certain rival, he fails to realize that he is the innocent. The girl is trying to corrupt him. The author herself described her protagonist as “a Christian malgré lui” (that is, Christian in-spite-of-himself). Hazel’s automobile is an important symbol in the story. It is meant to signify his false sense of freedom

Book Review

(“Nobody with a good car needs to be justified”). The car is his dilapidated substitute for the life-giving freedom of the Holy Ghost. Another crucial symbol is a shrunken man that is on display in a museum. This object is presented to Hazel Motes as a “new jesus” [sic], but he is finally constrained to see it for what it is: a grotesque sign of what humankind becomes without God. Hazel Motes’ rebellion against Christ is extreme; so is his eventual conversion. The penances he inflicts on himself (quicklime and strands of barbed wire are involved) are harsh indeed. Most readers will side with the landlady, Mrs. Flood, who says to Hazel: “There’s no reason for it. People have quit doing it.” To which Hazel responds: “They ain’t quit doing it as long as I’m doing it.” He began his eccentric crusade in the Church without Christ; he ends up immersed in Christ—but without a Church. Author Evelyn Waugh said of “Wise Blood”: ‘It isn’t the kind of book I like much, but it is good of its kind.’ I have never been able to figure out the “kind” of book Waugh had in mind. The sheer originality of “Wise Blood” is, for me, one of its strongest attractions. It is an amazing grace tale that is simply inimitable—and amazing. John Loranger was born in Butte, Montana in 1961 but has spent most of his life in Nevada. He served in the United States Navy from 1983 to 1987, then worked for the telephone company before retiring in 2011. He has always enjoyed reading fiction and has published two novels of his own: "The Odyssey of Art O'Hara" and "Lions and Souls: the Story of St. Mary of Egypt", available at LeRue Press and Amazon. His approach to fiction is best summed up by a quote from Walker Percy: "The first rule of thumb, of course, is pleasure. A good book gives the reader pleasure, the sort of deep, iding pleasure he likes to come back to."

New Chapters, New Beginnings

“Walk the Turtle”

s I sit and ponder the present, I know tomorrow will make it my past. Only memories will remain…alongside the everlasting.

We begin a spiritual melting into the depths of unknown moments of each second of our marriage with life; thus to be given new chapters and new beginnings together with the remains of endings endured. The grooves of fragmentations etched within the thoughts are these we cannot forget. We become bound to our faith and belief in the divinity of our precious love. Simplicity to the eternal living as we begin a romance of our spirits merging into an entity of one.

reetings to all for a happy, healthy, prosperous year ahead. Remember when 2020 sounded like a long time in the future? Well, here we are! As always, most of us will start the new year with resolutions that we fully intend to keep. I have decided this year to title mine ‘good intentions’ instead of ‘resolutions’. That way I won’t feel so guilty, come the middle of February, for not following through, as I only ‘intended’ to do the right thing, not ‘resolved’. Every year, my first and foremost intention is to eat healthy. No, not diet, just to become a little more aware of what and how much I eat, and taking time to prepare nutritious, wholesome meals. I would like to share a couple of my favorite salad recipes, hoping that this will get you all started on a healthy path to nutritious eating.

Ruth VanDyke

SHAPE-UP FITNESS SALAD This salad is best made in a large glass bowl, which shows each layer and makes it quite appealing. It can also be served as a full meal if made with the shrimp. It is equally tasty made either way. 3-4 stalks celery, sliced 1 can sliced water chestnuts

3 slender carrots, thinly sliced 1 (10oz.) pack frozen peas (do not thaw) 1 medium bunch radishes, sliced 1 bunch green onions, sliced 6 oz. package of frozen shrimp (or 2 small cans, drained) - optional 1 head lettuce, torn in bite-sized pieces – (I combine iceberg, romaine, green and red for color). DRESSING:

1 ½ cups mayonnaise or salad dressing 1-2 tablespoons of sugar (optional)

Layer first eight ingredients in large glass bowl in order listed. Gently spread mayonnaise over top and sprinkle with sugar if desired. Cover and marinate at least four hours or overnight. Before serving, mix slightly or turn into bowl and toss. GARNISH WITH: 2-4 sieved hard-cooked eggs; 8 oz. grated Swiss cheese; sliced mushrooms, and cherry tomatoes. CRUNCHY VEGETABLE SALAD This is my all-time favorite salad. The dressing is phenomenal! 1 pound fresh broccoli 1 small head of cauliflower

CRUNCHY VEGETABLE SALAD 3 carrots (thinly sliced) 1 green pepper (coarsely chopped)

Dressing: ½ cup sugar 1 teaspoon salt ½ cup vegetable oil 1 teaspoon poppy seeds

3 stalks celery (sliced) 1 red pepper or pimento (for color)

1 teaspoon dry mustard ½ cup vinegar 1 small onion, grated

Mix all ingredients, cover and allow to marinate in refrigerator overnight. Drain well before serving. For many more delectable salad recipes, check out my book “Memories with Recipes” or join us daily on my BLOG, “Ruth’s Food for Thought”.
