A New Forsythe Cancer Care Center

James W. Forsythe, MD, HMD has long been considered one of the most respected physicians in the United States, par cularly for his Treatment of Cancer and the legal use of Human Growth Hormone (HGH) for Human Growth Hormone Deficiency Syndrome.

I will admit that I'm a very stubborn fellow some mes. As a ma er of fact, very stubborn for about 49 years, but I've learned something since my last post here, "The Power of Persistence". Another way to help you keep mo vated is through the Love and Support from those around you.

I have learned that a lot of people are what I call "Nega ve Mo vators". They believe that if you're doing something not quite up to standards or perhaps choosing a career path they don't believe you'll be successful at, the best way to get you either doing be er or choosing a different path is through nega ve reinforcement.

This may work for basic training in the military and seems to bring about posi ve results on "Hells Kitchen", but both of these are examples of temporary situa ons. When it comes to this kind of treatment from your boos, friends or worse, family members, it can only lead to disastrous results. A prime example of this is a person who may be overweight and their parent/s call

Love and Support them "fat" in a effort to shame them into loosing weight.

To be blunt, this method SUCKS!!

l used to think the nega ve approach had it's merits, but I'm changing my point of view. I have been on both sides of this argument and can tell you it's very frustra ng all the way around. I have recently been trying to lose some weight myself and I must say, the nega ve comments I have received with my weight gain, are not prime mo vators. As a ma er of fact, they only have mo vated me to cu ng the me I choose to spend with some people.

My mother in a phone call recently said "You look like you've lost some weight" a er she watched a recent episode of my "BTS on the Road" web series. That mo vated me more than any nega ve comment ever could.

I must also say that the support from people on my career lately has been amazing! I guess a er 25 years of entertaining, of struggling, my eyes have been opened Continued on page 8

Art Paws Organizers Begin “Twilight Bark” Ahead of Artown RENO, NV – Perdy and Pongo ini ated the “Twilight Bark” in Walt Disney's "101 Dalma ans" to help find their stolen pups.

And it worked.

The organizers of Art Paws are barking now to help ensure the survival of the greatest pet event in Reno, the 17th Annual Art Paws during Reno's annual Artown fes val.

Art Paws must raise a minimum of $3,000 by April 15 to hold the Sunday, July 16 event.

Art Paws is part of Reno’s Artown, however, we receive no funding from Artown or any major Artown sponsors, other than the City of Reno.

Art Paws is a non‐profit Nevada corpora on and relies solely on support from the general pet public and the proceeds benefit three local non‐profit animal organiza ons.

A Sad Song

Many of my readers will have heard this story scores of mes, but it is s ll a good one. Sad and sweet!

Years ago my best buddies, all about six year olds, were given the sad news that my prized canary had died and we had to give him a grand send‐off. But how? None of us were regular church goes but a er pu ng the li le fella in a li le box, burying him properly, and placing a make‐shi cross out of s cks, I was asked to ‘say a few words’ on his behalf.

As I lived only a few yards from the Catholic Church in Virginia City and could on occasion hear music and song coming from there, I knelt down and prayerfully recited something I had heard.

“Under the “B” number 15….Under the “I”, 21…

Under the “O”, 61”….. AMEN”

A er coming to Reno from Charleston, S.C. in 1973 to accept the posi on of CEO of the Nevada State Medical Associa on and serving as Director of Physician Rela ons at Washoe Medical Center for two years, Pugh re red in 1990.

Later he helped establish Health Access Washoe County (HAWC) and served as Board Member and President for several years. He has served as Adjunct Clinical Instructor at the University of Nevada School of Medicine and authored four books through the History of Medicine Program there.

The Brothers Karamazov

by Fyodor Dostoyevsky

The greatness of Russian novelist Dostoyevsky (1821—1881) is especially evident in his power to a ract so many kinds of readers. He was a passionate Chris an believer, and yet atheists have been drawn to him (Sartre, Camus, Nietzsche, to name a few). He hated the Catholic Church and yet a good number of dis nguished Catholics have loved his work (for example, Georges Bernanos, Walker Percy, Gabriel Marcel and Henri de Lubac). He influenced writers as diverse as Franz Ka a, William Faulkner, Kurt Vonnegut, J. D. Salinger and Shelby Foote. Henry Miller virtually adored him. In his fic on, Dostoyevsky has been a scourge to everyone: liber nes and moralists, liberals and conserva ves, socialists and capitalists— yet he has a readership among all of these.

The Brothers Karamazov, Dostoyevsky’s last novel (completed in 1880), is generally considered to be his masterpiece. Its central theme is arres ng and provoca ve: if there is no God and no life beyond this life, then morality is non‐existent; ANYTHING goes. This theme is worked out drama cally by the interac on of the tular brothers: Alexey, a saintly religious novice (based on the great real‐life mys c, Vladimir Soloviev) ; Ivan, an atheist intellectual; and Dmitry, a bru sh but generally good‐natured rogue. The ac on has to do

with the murder of the siblings’ father, Fyodor Karamazov, a loathsome yet comical figure. Many other characters show up and o en prove to be as fascina ng as the three brothers, including a sinister illegi mate son of Fyodor named Smerdyakov.

An important and famous sec on in the novel is called “The Grand Inquisitor”.

Despite being muddled and bogus in parts, it bears within it genuine prophe c power. The author foretells with chilling clarity the totalitarian states of the twen eth century: most notably, Hitler’s Germany and Stalin’s Russia. The a en ve reader tends to come away from “The Grand Inquisitor” shaken.

The Brothers Karamazov is a kind of literary Mount Everest; which is to say that it is great but also very challenging and very long (it might even be called "dangerous"). Yet I think that the effort is worth it.

Here in Northern Nevada, we never know what Mother Nature is going to throw at us. We are in the midst of a record‐se ng, wet winter which is causing flooding issues, while the past few years have been in drought. Just months ago, frequent wildfires caused untold damage and disrup on. Some of the flooding concerns now center around the scars le by these burns.

But the most disastrous fire in terms of lives lost in the history of our country is one that few people know about. The Great Chicago Fire? No, but the firestorm known as the Pesh go fire occurred on the very same day – October 8, 1871.

While the Chicago fire claimed the world’s a en on, news of the Pesh go fire trickled out slowly and has forever been overshadowed by the more famous event.

Pesh go, located on an inlet of Green Bay, was one of numerous small communi es in northern Wisconsin, the upper peninsula of Michigan, and also across Lake Michigan that were affected by a series of fires all occurring on the same day. A cold front with high winds had moved into these areas, where the local prac ce of se ng small fires to clear land was common. No rain had fallen for months, and a conflagra on soon raged. A phenomenon known as a firestorm developed, crea ng temperatures of 2000 degrees or more and tornado‐ like winds. For most people in its path, there was no escape.

Peshtigo Fire-Deadliest Wildfire 1,500 to 2,500 people. In contrast, the Chicago fire took approximately 300 lives. Along with untold remote homesteads, twelve communi es just disappeared with all their records, so it is impossible to know for sure how many died in the conflagra on. An area of 2,400 square miles, or 1.5 million acres was involved in total, twice the size of the state of Rhode Island. Half of the popula on of the town of Pesh go perished, about 800 individuals.

I’ve always had an interest in the story of the Pesh go fires, because my great‐grandparents survived it. Oral tradi on in my family tells of a young neighbor boy who could not be found when it was me to flee across the Pesh go River, and was le behind. On the other side, the parents were overjoyed to see their son swimming across on the back of the family’s large dog.

Another story told is of my ancestor who had to carry her baby in her teeth, wrapped in a blanket, with a toddler on her back so she could carry two buckets of water into the cleared field where they survived the fire. Her husband, who was off figh ng the fire had told her she would need two buckets of water; one would not be enough. He was right.

It’s good to know we have learned a few things about fire preven on and land management since those days of “slash and burn” clearing, but our firefighters s ll have a tremendous challenge today. Mother Nature doesn’t play favorites, either here or in Wisconsin.

than ever. There are certainly gloomy things in this book, and evil is some mes graphically depicted; but I believe that Henri de Lubac had it right when he wrote that the underlying meaning of Dostoyevsky's work is one of hope; a hope that transcends the painful limita ons of this life.

He served in the United States Navy from 1983 to 1987, then worked for the telephone company before re ring in 2011. He has always enjoyed reading fic on and has published two novels of his own: "The Odyssey of Art O'Hara" and "Lions and Souls: the Story of St. Mary of Egypt". His approach to fic on is best summed up by a quote from Walker Percy: "The first rule of thumb, of course, is pleasure.
