There once was a man, a lover of words, adept at describing scenery of grandeur. For the mountains he had one thousand words, the oceans he had a million. For a sunset the adjec ves hummed like bees.

He could con nue for days and days. Brevity was not his strong suit.

Brian T. Shirley In a con nuing effort to take my career by the horns, I went into the studio and had a professional do voice‐over work for a new promo video. I also flew to Colorado Springs on my own dime (actually A LOT of dimes) to film a scene for an Indie movie.

I've learned that the game has changed a lot in my 20 years of performing stand‐up, especially in the last 5 years or so. I've always wanted to be an actor and I feel like I'm being drawn to it one way or another. It would be a HUGE boost to my Stand‐Up Career and it's almost a must these days if you want to work the "A" rooms. Not only am I diversifying my talents, I am networking, wri ng, ac ng, performing or promo ng every single day! I host Team Trivia once a week when I'm not on the road and the same with being a DJ for weddings, par es, conven ons, etc. Between trivia, DJ gigs, hos ng a radio segment once a week, co‐hos ng a radio show once a month, doing stand‐up and the occasional ac ng part, I have taken my career to another level just by working in the entertainment realm constantly. If I don't have a comedy gig for a few weeks, it doesn't bother me as much as when stand‐up was the only thing performance‐wise I was doing.

I stay too busy entertaining people to develop any "rust" and my shows have been ge ng be er.

If you're in a lull in your career, no ma er what the industry, I say shake it up a bit. Find your strong points and diversify them if you must. I know it may seem weird at first and I went through a lot of growing and adap ng to be able to do all of what I do now. None of these were or are easy and I s ll get very frustrated. The difference now is I really can't stay frustrated too long because I constantly have another gig, radio show or event to look forward to.

Proper long term planning is very important. Recently, Prince died without even a simple will and had an estate over $250 million; the probate court will now have to determine who his beneficiaries are and what they receive. The Federal government and the Minnesota state government will get about half of his estate.

Once again, for estate planning you should at least have a will and a trust. Other documents that need to be in place are a durable power of a orney and a medical power of a orney. These documents, when properly dra ed, will give someone the power to make important decisions for you in the event you become incapacitated.

Alzheimer’s and demen a have become quite common these days. Some people can live a long me while suffering from some form of demen a. Having the proper instruc ons in place will be of tremendous benefit to your

loved ones. Your long term planning should include the possibility of developing demen a in your later years.

According to Art Koff’s website, re redbrains.com, Alzheimer’s is now the 5th leading cause of death in the United States. The number of Americans who become afflicted with Alzheimer’s is projected to reach 13.8 million by the year 2050, and that number is substan ally higher than the prior forecasts. Someone in the United States develops Alzheimer’s every 70 seconds.

average cost of trea ng demen a during the last five years of life is about $278,000. Compara vely, the average cost of trea ng cancer is $173,400 and the average cost of trea ng heart disease is $175,100.

There are some early warning signs of Alzheimer’s which include severe memory loss, difficulty performing simple tasks, confusion, loss of judgement, losing items and changes in mood and personality. If you or a loved one is beginning to show some of these signs, take them seriously and get medical evalua on. Prescrip on drugs available today have been shown to be very effec ve in figh ng the symptoms of the disease.

Lifestyle is also very important in lowering the risk of Alzheimer’s. Get plenty of sleep, reduce stress, eat a healthy diet with more fruits and vegetables and get plenty of regular exercise.

Planning ahead for the possibility of some form of demen a like Alzheimer’s will really help your loved ones in the unfortunate event that it is diagnosed.

The missing ten spot?

I

posed a simple problem to a college mathema cs professor several years ago and I think I stumped him; his complex solu on made no sense at all. Here goes.

The newest hotel in Reno, a gorgeous Five Star masterpiece was recently opened during the Hot August Nights adventure. Rooms were at a premium but fortunately there was a cancella on and a suite was available. There stood three gentlemen who badly wanted accommoda ons for the night. The suite was $300 and the gents each plunked down hundred dollar bills and were happy to do it. The bellman took them to their room and on returning to the front desk was informed there had been a mistake. “That suite is listed as being only $250, so here, Charles, return these five ten dollar bills with my apology!”

On the way up the bellman did some figuring. It would be awkward to give the gentlemen $50 so he puts $20 in his pocket and gave them ten bucks each. They were happy.

Back at the bell stand he did some figuring….”Those guys each paid $100 and were returned $10 each... so… 3 x $90 equals $270….and, yes, I pocketed $20…. Now that equals $290, Right? So, just where did the other $10 go?”

My mathema cian friend pondered this at some length and figured out each man paid $93.33 totaling roughly $280.00 and the bellman kept $20.00 and there was no lost $10.00. I told him that was the lamest explana on I had ever heard! The last I heard this man went on to be elected Treasurer of the State of Nevada.

The Monday morning a er opening for The Rolling Stones’ first U.S. performance at the Swing Auditorium located in The Na onal Orange Show Grounds in San Bernardino, California based rock group, “Those Bushman”, but all of a sudden, their lives had changed forever!

“A er the Stones gig, everyone loved us” remembers rhythm guitar player Wayne Gondos. “I went overnight from High School Reject to Superstar! (Ugly Things Issue 24, Summer 2006.)

For 18 months star ng in mid‐1965, the Rialto based rock group, “Those Bushman” later known as just “The Bush” ruled the Inland Empire teen scene, from San Bernardino to Palm Springs, and as far as south San Diego. These Five Savage Young Bushmen who were noted for being one of the most authen c Rolling Stone inspired musical acts in the Inland Epire, earned them the opportunity to open for the Rolling Stones by winning a Ba le of the Bands held in the Kaiser Dome!

The Kaiser Dome, like the Swing auditorium hosted a number of up‐and‐coming rock bands from the Los Angeles and San Franisco areas with the likes of The Doors, The Seeds, The Birds and Buffalo Springfield to name a few, as well as a number of “Ba le of the Bands” contests hosted by the two most popular AM Rock Radio Sta ons in the Inland Empire, KFXM 590 and KMEN 129.

The quickest way in the 1960s to gain notoriety, popularity and gig offers, was to enter and win a Ba le of the Bands contest, which was in most cases, much easier said than done! The Inland Empire music scene was very compe ve and saturated with numerous aggressive and talented bands, with some of them signed to a local record label.

Those Bushmen had to compete and win against The Dri woods, Ebb Tides, Germs and the Hysterics on this occasion.

Those Bushmen, determined to win, stepped up their band prac ce schedule and concentrated on each carefully selected song, which in turn, made them victorious at the Ba el of the Bands held on Sunday, February 18, 1965 at the Kaiser Dome and give lead singer/songwriter/front man Steve Hoard, bass player, Dave Hoard, lead guitar player, Allen Henninger, rhythm guitar player, Wayne Gondos and drummer, Brent Cartwright the opportunity to take the stage

From reject to Superstar and open for the Rolling Stones March 15, 1965.

The Stones had something ‐ ‐ that was undeniable‐ but it was something a ainable, something well within the grasp of the five kids from Rialto.

Artown’s only ‘Bring Your Dog Day’, Art Paws will celebrate its 16th Anniversary at McKinley Arts and Culture Center Park at 925 Riverside Drive on Sunday, July 17, 2016 from 10 am to 5 pm! Up un l a week ago, Art Paws was in jeopardy of being canceled, due in large part to an increase in required liability insurance amount and a more than 500% increase in the premium cost of insurance for this FREE dog event.

Pet Supermarket came to the rescue with their tle sponsorship which allowed the organizers to purchase the required insurance to be able to host the event, but that put a huge dent in our budget! Also, due to the lack of earlier funding, the organizers have not been able to market or adver se the event up un l this point. Please help us let the public know about our needs this year!

We have also started a GoFundMe.com campaign to help defer the cost of insurance. “Pennies for Art Paws Campaign” asks those who have a ended or will a end Art Paws with a K9 best friend, to donate .25 cents per paw or 100 pennies per pet!

All proceeds from the event will benefit 3 local animal aid organiza ons, 2 underdog grants and one organiza on determined via on‐site vo ng with our People’s Choice Contest. This year our Underdog Grants were awarded to; Feeding Pets of the Homeless and The Rosa Project.

Art Paws during the month of July is part of the 21st annual Artown fes val, July 2016. The month‐long summer arts fes val features more than 500 events produced by more than 100 cultural organiza ons and businesses in loca ons citywide, with major funding provided by the City of Reno.

Reno is Artown!

WHAT: 21st annual Artown fes val in Reno, NV. Over 500 events, mostly free, throughout the Reno area. Arts include music, theater, dance, performance art, visual art shows, children’s programming, workshops, art walks and much much more.

In addi on, several headliners will be performing at cketed events – Neko Case/k.d. lang/Laura Veirs (7/7); Rosanne Cash with John Leventhal (7/14); Na onal Cowboy Poetry Gathering on the Road (7/21); UB40 featuring founding members Ali Campbell, Astro & Mickey Virtue (7/29).

WHEN: July, 2016. Usually the 31 days in July, this year it has expanded to 32, adding a day before to accommodate all the excep onal events and par cipants.

WHERE: Venues all across Reno, from public parks to auditoriums, studios, street performances and tradi onal theaters.

WHO: Artown is a 501c3 non‐profit organiza on whose primary purpose is to stage this annual event. There is some city and founda on funding, but Artown also relies on the generosity of many corporate and individual donors.

The organiza on is overseen by a volunteer board of community leaders from many walks of life to ensure diversity and community engagement. It is es mated that over 300,000 people a ended last year.

Each year a local ar st is selected to create the annual image represen ng Artown. This year, ar st Michelle Lassaline’s work depicts a fes ve Nevadan animal parade celebra ng the performing and visual arts that thrive in our community.

MORE: Reno, Nevada is becoming known as an arts des na on, a rac ng visitors and new residents, as well as providing a higher quality of life to residents. Artown, celebra ng its 21st anniversary has been a leading force in this trend.
