despite the early hour. “If Ben Franklin were here right now, I’d kick his ass. What the hell were you thinking? I saw the moon out the window!” Basile, known by his Greek friends as Vasili, says he should be cooking. “With a father named Herb a mother named Rosemary and being named Basile, what else would I do,” he asks? Well, Basile cooks, even has his own line of seasonings, but he is well‐known for his comedy act that he performs in both English and Greek. He shared a picture of himself with Steve Harvey from early in his career. “Steve and I started together, we became good friends. He had great talent, I had great whatever I had. I don’t know what I had. I had a car. That’s what I had. A car to get to the gigs. Steve and I hit it off. In fact, we did our first Show me special… the Comedy Club Network with Show me. We filmed it and that’s where our career(s) started.” Basile paused a moment to gulp some coffee.

“Steve went his way, I went mine. You can see now Steve’s a megastar and I’m in the lobby of Reno, Nevada having coffee at 7 a.m. So, you can see where my career has gone! But I love what I do. Two nights ago, I had a woman come up to me and say, ‘I saw you 22 years ago in Pi sburgh. You made me laugh and you s ll do!’ She’ll be at the show again tonight. These people are coming from all over and I’m so fla ered. “I do the best I can to be private about my life. There are two sides to me. A lot of people know who I am because I bring real stories. They know the island that I’m from, they know rela ves that I have… Everyone’s a cousin! I do my stand up in Greek and it’s a completely different show. I never thought my character on stage could be that married guy (for the American show)…. In my American act, I talk about the crazy things I did as a kid. I didn’t think I could be that married guy on stage. When I asked at what point he knew he “made it”, Basile got a li le serious. “One of my things for me is, some mes I never realize my successes I’ve had because I’m always pushing… when I’m si ng on my yacht somewhere in Greece off an island smoking a cigar with my favorite Grand Marnier and having my meal prepared by a chef that I hired then I’ll probably I’ll say I made it. But I guess one of my biggest downfalls is I never get the opportunity to be able to sit down and smell the roses Con nued on page 11

Promotion: The Toughest Part of Being an Indie

In 2009, I put out my first comedy book Make Love Not Warts and thought that once I put the word out, I could sit back and relax. WRONG! It barely sold any off the Internet, but this book sold really well a er my shows. I was frustrated, but I kept up the faith. I put out Four Score and Seven Beers Ago.. a couple of years later, in 2011. This me I got a lot more involved in the marke ng. I worked on my website, got involved on LinkedIn, Twi er and Facebook. I also started trying to learn as much as I could about book promo on. I had done an email and press release campaign through my publisher which I'm s ll paying for on my credit cards, and I learned that was a mistake. I dropped that publisher as of earlier this last week of March, 2017. I'm now doing everything myself. Book #3, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Club was a very different experience. This publisher actually sought me out, provided an ar st and edited my work no cost to me. It was just an E‐book, but it's s ll on Amazon. I added a

lot of material to my stage show because of that book; it was based on true stories from being on the road for nearly 20 years. I'm on the way to book #4 with much more knowledge about this publishing game and the biggest lesson I've found is I s ll have a lot to learn. I used to get really frustrated with the slow pace of the whole process, but now I try to accomplish something every day towards my goals. I use any li le promo on I get to push the books, to push my comedy career, my ac ng career, my WEB TV series or to push all at the same me. I have also used and con nue to use my radio presence to push myself and other ar sts as well. I find this has been a HUGE way to network. I no longer do a full show, but my short segment "BTS Entertainment Corner" is just as important to me as a 2 hour show and I'm honored to be a part of "What's the Story?" and now the WEB TV show "Hollywood South". By the way, as I sit and write this, I have just Continued on page 8

What’s the Story Radio Show A few weeks ago, Sco Ades men oned that What’s the Story? should have someone on our radio show that he felt would be an inspira on to our listeners. Sco also wanted to spread the word about My Hometown Heroes, as he does for many non‐profits. He helped coordinate an interview with Danny Heinsohn on the show. Danny Heinsohn’s joined us on What’s the Story? on April 3, 2017*. His story began shortly a er his college gradua on when he was diagnosed with brain cancer. Though no one can determine the outcome of a cancer diagnosis, Danny was a fighter and determined to win his ba le with the disease. Part of his journey included becoming an accomplished sports professional, cycling coach and USA Triathlon All ‐American. Realizing that a cancer diagnosis takes so much out of a person’s life, Danny decided to celebrate his 10‐year anniversary of remission by founding My Hometown Heroes, a na onal scholarship fund for young adult cancer survivors. With his ability to help others achieve success, he wanted to share his skills and what he had learned through his experience with young adults going through the same thing. Recipients

Would You Have the Determination? of My Hometown Heroes’ efforts are represented on their website at myhometownheroes.org On April 21, 2017, My Hometown Heroes and sponsors present Euphotoria 2017. In its second year, Eurphotoria with board member Jared Lindwall and Bridget Roscupp, entrepreneur and photographer, think of it as “a community venue for crea ve and therapeu c expression through photography”. The event funded two college‐bound cancer survivors with $1000 Scholarships in 2016. This year’s event will benefit college‐bound survivors of cancer for the Fall 2017 semester. *You can listen to the full recorded interview at americamaters.us. The Mendacity of Advertising

On this subject of lying, Mark Twain has been historically credited with saying: “…. a LIE travels around the globe while the TRUTH is pu ng on its shoes.” I am becoming increasingly annoyed at increasingly annoying commercials on TV! Maybe it’s because I realize I have become a vic m of a stepped up program of lying about the products or services being promoted. Those scripted adver ser are not everyday ci zens like you and me; they are well paid actors and have assumed I have given them the imprimatur to invade my space. But, no, I haven’t! Perhaps there should be an ethical rule that people who recommend stuff on TV should have to a est they have actually used their product or service and it is actually effec ve. Otherwise their tes monials are no more than BUNK! Know it! Skilled semi‐ac ve actors are among the worst prevaricators, they fill the airwaves with headache cures, magical pots and pan, patent medicines, skin and beauty stuff, but weight loss carnival drummers, actually, are the worst! Were one to add up all the pounds alleged to have been ‘lost’ the combined tonnage na onwide would sink the migh est ba leship. Since such ac ng does work in increasing sales we can look forward to the falsehoods increasing each and every year. Now that we have established that TV actors have no idea about the effec veness of their products or the services promoted maybe it’s because there is a clause someplace in their lucra ve contracts exemp ng them from telling the truth. And maybe it goes something like “Hey we pay you a lot to stand there and lie. Just smile and read what we hand you!” In short, it just might be that we, tragically and truly want to believe whatever they are selling… because they do SEEM to be honest and telling the

truth. Poli cians?….now don’t get me started on poli cians! Are we then complicit in all this? And are we being willingly vic mized? You bet!! We consistently buy their junk; we buy what they are lying about. That beau ful poem by John Keats back in 1819 called An Ode on a Grecian Urn cau ons all of us about decep on in his descrip on of that famous vase. “Beauty is Truth, Truth Beauty… That is all ye know on earth and all ye need to know!” Continued on page 11

John Loranger Li le is known about Emily Bronte who was born in England in 1818 and died in 1848 at the age of thirty—one year a er the publica on of her only novel. It had been published jointly with another novel called Agnes Grey that was wri en by Emily’s younger sister, Anne. The two women, presen ng their works under male pseudonyms, had to subsidize the project themselves. Neither Anne nor Emily was very sa sfied with the printed products; but future edi ons of each book eventually followed and the literary gi s of the Bronte sisters—Charlo e included, author of Jane Eyre—has long since been recognized. Wuthering Heights is a love story, but unlike anything to be found in the popular romance genres. Weak imita ons abound but there have also been a number of borrowings from formidable writers. The Great Gatsby by F. Sco Fitzgerald strikes me as a virtuoso offspring of Wuthering Heights. But while Fitzgerald’s novel is technically superior to Bronte’s, its effect—on me, anyway—is less profound. As for the various film versions of the Bronte novel, they definitely fall short of their source; not because I buy into the no on that “the book is always be er than the movie” but because this book is inimitable. The plot concerns the turbulent rela onship between earthbound or hellbound Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff. The la er, a homeless child whom the father of Catherine rescued from the streets of Liverpool, is brought to an isolated country home set among a wild landscape of hills and heather. A

friendship quickly develops between this child and his stepsister despite his being rejected by others in the household. When the father dies, this rejec on becomes more acute—and cruel. In the mean me the bond between Heathcliff and Catherine grows increasingly intense, even as Heathcliff methodically plots revenge against his enemies. Despite the force of their love, one is le with the impression that it was never physically consummated. This peculiarity might be a byproduct of the Victorian prudery of Bronte’s mes; consequently, she may have expected readers to infer the sexual component. On the other hand, she may have explored this rela onship exactly as she desired. Catherine and Heathcliff seem to experience their union the way mys cs experience God: an absolute exchange of selves. “Nelly,” Catherine says at one point, “I AM Heathcliff! He’s always, always in my mind: not as a pleasure … but as my own being.” Compelling as these themes are, Wuthering Heights features other a rac ve elements as well, including humor. The Sinking of the Titanic: An Analogy of Failed Leadership

The Sinking of the Titanic Provides Lessons for Leaders “We have struck iceberg … sinking fast … come to our assistance.” On a cold evening in 1912 that message came blistering across the airwaves. Before they tapped the last bit of Morse code, those words became the epitaph over the lives of the 1,200 people lost on the Titanic. The ship was doomed as it slowly sank into its watery grave. Why did the largest, most advanced ship of its me sink? Those of us who study history or remember the movie may know why. It wasn’t the iceberg that caused the disaster. It is clear in my mind the real cause was failed leadership. Leadership is Responsible — Leadership is responsible for everything the organiza on does or fails to do. Leadership is more than a wooden figurehead. A leader is not a posi on, job tle, or in this case, the captain of the ship. Leadership is not about power, ego or pride. Leadership is ever‐present, touching, mo va ng, talking, checking and removing barriers, training, preparing, breathing and moving about. The Titanic’s ill‐fated voyage was Captain E.J. Smith’s re rement trip. He was headed for the easy life. All he had to do was get to New York. God only knows why he ignored the facts, why he disregarded seven iceberg warnings from his crew and other ships. The Titanic s ll rests on the bo om of the ocean, but we can resurrect the truth and apply a few lessons learned to help us become be er leaders. The Biggest Is Not the Best — Today’s businesses must change course quickly. It took over 30 seconds before the Titanic turned away from the iceberg, but by then it was too late. The larger an organiza on becomes, the greater its inflexibility. The

more difficult and cumbersome it is to steer, to direct and to change course. Large businesses soon grow into huge bureaucracies where rules, regula ons, policies, procedures and “I need permission to make a decision” become the norm. Rank Has Its Privileges? –– Ranking is good for command and control, but not good for change and innova on. Ranking people limits their poten al. Today, businesses rank and classify people — some mes uninten onally. Whether it is reserved parking spaces for the privileged or being categorized as blue collar, white collar, temporary, part‐ me, those with cubicles or those with offices, the results are the same. Clear the lines between the classes and make everyone feel they are rowing in the same direc on, for the same purpose. In a disaster, everyone is equal. The Truth Changes — The Titanic was unsinkable, so they thought. The ship designers were so confident in their ship they only had enough lifeboats for half the passengers. The thinking that made us successful yesterday will cause us to fail tomorrow. Our unlearning curve must be greater than our learning curve if we are going to succeed. Technology Makes a Poor Subs tute for Authen c Leadership — When technology fails, leadership must prevail. Years before the Titanic’s voyage Captain Smith said, “I cannot imagine any condi on which would cause a ship to founder. Modern shipbuilding has gone beyond that.” Many businesses today have placed the wrong people in charge. They are not leaders, but managers. So when disaster strikes, who is going to step up and lead? Or will your technology cause you to shipwreck and pull you under? Leadership is About Training and Development — As the stern of the Titanic li ed out of the water, the crew and passengers struggled with the lifeboats. There had been no drills, no rehearsals, and the crew stood unfamiliar with their responsibili es. The boats were improperly loaded and only one went back to try to recover survivors. A good leader helps people improve their skills so they can become more produc ve. What Lies Below Is More Destruc ve than What Is On Top — The greatest dangers lie unseen below the surface. That night in 1912 the water was smooth like glass — and decep vely dangerous. The iceberg lurked below. Like steel fangs, it tore at the rivets along 300 feet of the Titanic’s hull. Those below, the crew and steerage, felt and saw the damage first. Like a gasping breath, the steam billowed above as chaos reigned below. Then and now, those who know what’s wrong with your “ship” are those below decks. Those people on the frontline usually have the best ideas and Continued on page 8

Into Temptation

“Walk the Turtle”

We step into a new day with a new mindset of truth and reflec on, enhanced percep ons of understanding how we once fooled ourselves into believing human lies. To have allowed ourselves to dabble with unrighteousness and to become reckless with our own heart and others we love, it becomes apparent to our soul to cry. Eternal is our journey, many paths we all will travel in this physical world. Many more we will face at a spiritual level, challenges ahead will always seem too hard. Our strength and courage delivered to us by love and faith will simplify any difficul es as we encounter fear, forgive and let grace built deep in founda on be felt. Overriding thoughts that seem to guide us down roads of loneliness, sorrow, and self destruc on is required in order to experience the true wonders life offers. A point in me comes to us when we must eliminate all nega ve

elements that influence our mind, body, and soul to move forward toward righteousness living. Walk the turtle making the right choices, allow yourself to become a powerful spirit that can resist and overcome all circumstances that lead you into tempta on.

sour, self‐righteous servant, Joseph, is like a character out of Flannery O’Connor’s fic on, mumbling against the wickedness around him with an English dialect that is rus c enough to require footnotes. Nelly Dean, the household servant, is the main narrator. Her character has been derided by a number of cri cs down through the years. However, I am with Charlo e Bronte who said that this character is ‘a specimen of true benevolence and homely fidelity’. It is from Nelly’s lips that a note of religious hope is conveyed, convincingly so, at the novel’s conclusion. This seems consistent with Emily Bronte’s theological outlook, concerning which her sister wrote: “She held that mercy and forgiveness are the divinest a ributes of the Great Being who made both man and woman…”

Con nued from page 2 and the accomplishments that I’ve made. I’ve been blessed with great success, personal, professional, I wish I could say everything I touched has turned to gold, but that would be bullshit. If anyone tells you otherwise, they’re full of crap. For every accomplishment that I’ve had, there’s probably five or six failures that I keep in the bo om file drawer in my office that you never see. People that I work for, maybe comedy clubs, agents, managers, they only see the successes. They don’t see the endless nights of pu ng together an act…. You have to tweek it here, tweek it there…I’m never sa sfied… I love wri ng movie scripts, I love wri ng things that are for the Greek community around the world and touring. I love wri ng a joke that makes me laugh and my character on stage is a lot different than a lot of other people and you’re hoping, hey, one day, Hollywood, take no ce, this is what I do.
