Select Works From The Robert Bleakley Collection

I feel fortunate in knowing from an early age, the passion which was to become my career for at least half of my working life.

While studying fine art in London with Sotheby’s, I was offered a job in the antiquities department as cataloguer for tribal art, then part of the antiquities Department. The now acclaimed author, Bruce Chatwin, was in the process of retiring to pursue his writing career, tribal art then known as primitive art occupied a very minor place in the departments turnover.

In 1978 I catalogued and oversaw the dispersal of one of the legendary collections of Oceanic and African art which was being sold by the celebrated Swiss collector George Ortiz. His financial need arose from the ransom payment of US$1 mill in 1977 for the release of his daughter; Graziella who had, at the age of only five years old, been kidnapped by the Italian terrorist group, the Red Brigade.

It was an unparalleled learning opportunity as George and I worked together for months in the preparation of a scholarly catalogue. He had a hugely diverse collecting interest which inspired me although I was on a far more limited budget. The auction was an enormous success benchmarking a new level of pricing for tribal works.

In becoming the founding director of Sotheby’s Australia, I became increasingly conversant with all manner of artworks. This resulted in an expansion of my collecting interests and is reflected in the considerable diversity of cultures and objects contained in the works on offer.

I am now parting with artworks which I had thought I would never sell however the march of time renegotiated that. Not all the works are of substantial monetary value, I have always found that same spark of the infinite exists in even seemingly insignificant works as much as in the undoubted masterpieces. Many times I have been asked what my favourite object is, it is generally the most recently acquired work, regardless of value.

other notes

Jean-Pierre Hauchecorne (b. 1908, Paris) was the son of French consul Armand Hauchecorne and nephew of Orientalist sculptor Gaston Hauchecorne. After studying at Lycée Louis-le-Grand and completing military service, he joined his father in Japan in 1931 as a secretary and later became a French professor in Shizuoka, where one of his students, Yasuhiro Nakasone, would go on to become Prime Minister. He continued teaching in Kansai and Kyoto until his imprisonment during WWII, from which he was freed in 1945. During the war, he also protected the collection of Italian ethnologist Fosco Maraini. In 1933, he married Hatsuko Odan, a descendant of a samurai family, with whom he had two children. From the 1950s to 1970s, Hauchecorne travelled across Japan collecting traditional crafts and became close to the Mingei movement, forming friendships with key figures like Kawai Kanjiro, Bernard Leach, and Moriguchi Kako. He promoted Japanese folk arts to both local and foreign audiences.

He returned to France in his seventies, settling near Montpellier and later in Nice, where he died in 1995.

Buyers should be aware of the PMCH Act which protects Australia’s heritage of movable cultural objects and supports foreign countries’ right to protect their heritage of movable cultural objects. The PMCH Act regulates the export of nationally significant heritage objects, it is not intended to restrict normal and legitimate trade in cultural property, and does not affect an individual’s right to own or sell objects, within Australia. The PMCH Act was enacted in response to the 1970 UNESCO Convention on the Means of Prohibiting the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property. It is the responsibility of the Buyer to ensure that the export of any lots purchased are not subject to, or in breach of, this Act.

Information about the PMCH Act, the Protection of Movable Cultural Heritage Regulations 1987 and the 1970 UNESCO Convention, can be found on the Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts website at: www.environment.gov.au/heritage/movable/index
