KIM PEHI

2021 Citizen of the Year

My name is Kim Pehi and I have lived in Leominster all of my life. I live and work on the street my family has been on for 5 generations. I have two wonderful children, Angela (29) and Brendan (26). My husband and I own a local business that serves mostly residential and small business owners. We take a lot of pride in being able to serve our community. I come from a long line of people who “do” when something needs to be done. My grandfather, a veteran and firefighter in this city for over 30 years, was also a big part of the Mount Wachusett Ski Patrol program. When proposition 2 1/2 happened in the 80’s, and threatened youth sports, my mother helped to start parents for football so the kids could play. Almost every person I am surrounded by makes a difference in their world.

We learn from our examples. These are my examples.

As a business, we use our knowledge and resources to try to help the people who manage our city and schools. In collaboration with city hall, during COVID, we collected old laptops and refurbished them to be sure every student could stay connected to learning.

We have enjoyed teaching interns from the Leominster Center for Excellence since its inception. We are happy to work with the 14

Veterans office in honoring our heroes through local events and the Hometown Heroes banner program.

1994, I lost an infant son to a congenital heart defect. It was only through another local bereaved mother sharing her story that I was able to move forward. Together, we started Community Action Birth Loss Support.

In 2003, my brother Michael went missing. After years of searching, we knew we needed to pour our energy into something positive and productive. There is hope and healing in sharing. In 2010, in collaboration with several local organizations, our family started Michael’s Run. Each year, we hold events such as our 5K and Party with a Purpose. All proceeds are put back into the community to support mental wellness initiatives. Our Healthier Minds meetings are a great place for anyone to find resources, and to feel welcome and supported in their journey to being mentally well.

One of the very best things we do through Michael’s Run is go into the schools throughout the region to share Michael’s journey with our young people in the hopes to eliminate stigma and keep the conversation going. We see the difference his story makes and that is a most healing thing for our family.

Our mission is simple; no person...especially a child...should ever feel that death is a better option than life. The way we change that is by making sure we talk about it. Finding tools that help us to heal and grow. Taking comfort in shared experiences. And by making sure people understand that this isn’t something that discriminates.

We start with our children because they are our agents for change.

I am truly honored to have been chosen as Leominster’s citizen of the year. I know the kind of people who have been celebrated before me and I am humbled to be put in a category with those that I have such high regard for. However, I would be remiss not to make mention all of the people involved in our efforts. There are many people who go above and beyond to do what needs to be done, an entire community of supporters, businesses, and organizations that rally around us year after year. And a city hall and school system that supports our efforts. None of this gets done without all of that. I am eternally grateful to everyone who has been a part of this journey of hoping to make a difference.

BARY COSIMI

2021 Citizen of the Year Bary Cosimi was born in Clinton, MA, January 10, 1956 to Celestino and Viola Cosimi. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Leominster, where he has been a resident for the last 65 years. He has a sister, Karen and a brother, John. As a child he lived on Blossom Street and attended Northwest and George Street schools for elementary grades. Carter Junior High for grades 7-9, and Leominster High School for grades 10-12, and was a graduate of the Class of 1974. He tragically lost his father a year later to brain cancer. Despite this terrible loss, and his own set of serious health challenges along the way, Bary persevered, and through a strong work ethic and conviction, he became a profitable businessman.

Bary’s legacy of generosity includes supporting Pop Warner football, all three Leominster Little Leagues, Doyle Field events, Special Olympics, Montachusett Chorale, Our Father’s House, LHS soccer and basketball, the Flower Box Fund, the Mayor’s Heating Fund, and Starburst. In addition, Bary has donated pipe and fittings to major field projects and has donated Patriots, Red Sox and Bruins tickets for various fundraisers.

According to former DPW Director Pat LaPointe, “Bary always bid on City contracts and many times was the low bidder in a conscious effort to assist his city in its infrastructure maintenance. He always made his company available in emergency situations, contract or not.”

At age 13, Bary began his career working for his father’s company, Gem Excavating. While there, Bary worked on various construction projects, getting first-hand knowledge of what is required in the complex infrastructure of our roads. After his father died, he joined his uncle at Cosimi 16

Trucking Company. He played a role in the construction of I-190, where he managed the hauling of countless truckloads of sand and gravel to various locations along the soon-to-be connector between Worcester and Leominster. He would work on this project for Cosimi Trucking from 1979-1982.

In 1982, Bary moved on from Cosimi Trucking and began a new chapter in his life in more ways than one.

Bary met his future wife, Sheilah, shortly after his father passed, and after a few years of dating, they married in 1982. Shortly after, Bary and his brother John founded Pipe Plus, Inc. in 1983. Bary had the idea for the company after his years in the construction business, where he saw a constant demand for construction products and at that time, there were not many suppliers locally. It was extremely difficult at the beginning, and Bary and John worked seven days a week to ensure the young business survived. Between the marketing, negotiating contracts with manufacturers to get product lines, and the construction of their facility on Lancaster Street, it took an incredible amount of hard work and long hours, but eventually they began to see it pay off. Today, Pipe Plus is in its 38th year in business, and Bary is still overseeing the company as its President. In addition to Pipe Plus, Bary also co-owns Southgate Business Park on the Leominster-Sterling border. Its biggest addition has been a new location for the Registry of Motor Vehicles a few years ago. This subsequently attracted a few more businesses to move in. Despite not attending college, Bary has become a very successful businessman through an incredible amount of persistence and dedication. He has used that success to positively impact various organizations and charities across the city.

Bary and Sheilah have had a wonderful life together that was enhanced when their son Brian was born in 1992. In addition to family, Bary has had a few other passions in life: cars, golf, and the Patriots. Bary has had several cars through the years, from hot rods to modern sports cars.

He enjoys anything fast with a loud engine. Bary also loves to play golf with his friends and his son Brian. He is currently a member at Oak Hill Country Club in Fitchburg. The New England Patriots are also a huge passion for him. He has had season tickets since 1991, and has been to just about every home game since. Whether it is a warm Sunday afternoon in September or a frigid winter night in December, chances are Bary will be in attendance. He has been lucky enough to attend 10 Super Bowls, and has witnessed all six of the Patriots’ victories. Bary has also been a traveler, going on many family trips with Sheilah and Brian. His favorite spot now is to a home he and Sheilah purchased in Florida. They spend a few weeks there during the winter months and have a relaxing time with family and friends. Bary is a generous and humble man who, through his selfless nature, has made a difference in his community.
