Bonnie Hathaway, born in North Dakota graduated from the University of North Dakota with a BS degree in nutrition. After completing a one-year dietetic internship at Beth Israel (Boston) Bonnie obtained her Registered Dietitian status. In 1979 she received her MS degree in nutrition from Framingham State. Married in 1971 to Jack Hathaway (Leominster native), they raised their two children Sara and Kent in Leominster. Bonnie s career as a Registered Dietitian included being the rst BONNIE HATHAWAY Registered Dietitian to be hired 2019 Citizen of the Year by Leominster Hospital in 1973. Her clinical nutrition skills took her to St. Vincent Hospital, Athol Hospital and Heywood Hospital where she retired in 2011 from her position as Director of Nutrition and Diabetes Services. During this time, she also served as an adjunct professor of nutrition at Mount Wachusett Community College. As a nutritionist she served on various committees in Leominster including Healthy Start Coalition for Pregnant Teens, American Heart Association program committee and Massachusetts Anti-Hunger coalition. While working continually in the eld of nutrition in various positions for 39 years, she became involved with many community projects and organizations: Founder of Montachusett Interfaith Hospitality Network (a homeless shelter for families). Bonnie along with the support from Pilgrim Congregational Church reached out to the community and inspired several area churches to work together to form this non-prot organization which continues to serve families faced with homelessness. Serving as the rst board president she earned the title president emeritus. She continues to support MIHN by coordinating Pilgrim Congregational Church s 14
involvement with the shelter. For her founding of MIHN she received the United States Presidential Award presented by the President s Council on Service and Civic participation in recognition of making a difference through volunteer service. The Sentinel and Enterprise named her one of the areas Women of the Year Over the past 6 years as a city council appointed member of the Leominster Cultural Council she served as secretary for four years and most recently completed her role as president. During her presidency she spearheaded the rst “recognition reception” for grant recipients, worked closely with the board and Mass Cultural Council to streamline the grant application and reporting process which enables more community groups to seek grant monies for work in the Arts, Humanities and Sciences. Sang with the Montachusett Chorale for 12 years (a chorale group who donates all income from ticket sales to a community specic charity) Member of Pilgrim Congregational church. Served as deacon, chairperson of the missions committee, chairperson of the growth committee whose duties included public relations for the church. A 20+ year member of the handbell choir. Sunday school teacher. Hospice Volunteer for Leominster Health Alliance Home Health and Hospice. In August 2015 Bonnie was diagnosed with Parkinson s Disease. With the same enthusiasm she has exhibited in service to the community she is working diligently to be part of the solution to nd a cure by fund raising for the Massachusetts Parkinson’s Foundation and participating in clinical trials through Boston University, The Michael J Fox Foundation, the University of New Hampshire and University of Massachusetts Worcester Campus. Bonnie attributes her willingness to step up when a need is identied through the example set by her parents who did whatever they could to make their community a better place for all. 15
RON GIROUARD 2019 Citizen of the Year
Ron Girouard started to volunteer for Leominster Access Television in 2015, when he described his grandmother’s lm collection of downtown Leominster from the 1950s and 1960s to Carl Piermarini in an interview. Ron was genuinely interested in learning about the City of Leominster and its past. That year, Ron was contacted by Leominster Mayor Dean Mazzarella, who suggested that Ron should become a volunteer member of the Leominster Historical Commission. Ron was ofcially made a member of the Leominster Historical Commission on May 29, 2018. Ron majored in Graphics and Web Design in college at Mount Wachusett Community College. As a volunteer for LTV, Ron learned how to use Adobe Premier and FileMaker. A selftaught videographer, Ron’s strong drive to learn to lm led to lming local events such as the band concerts, the stroll events, and the Johnny Appleseed Festival. Other opportunities to lm 16
live included volunteering on Thursday night to lm Inside Leominster, the mayor s weekly television show. In 2018, Ron won a Documentary award from LTV for his history of the movie industry in Leominster. Filmed in 2017, the documentary includes an interview with Karen Byrne, whose family once owned the early movie theaters in Leominster, such as the Gem Theater, the Rialto Theater, and the Plymouth Theater. Although these theaters, sadly, no longer exist, the images and memories of them are preserved on lm, thanks to Ron’s volunteer work. Wanting to learn more about Leominster s history, Ron volunteered to work at the Leominster Historical Society in 2017. Since then, Ron has used digital scanning technology to catalog and preserve photographic negatives from the 1800s and 1900s. Currently, Ron is scanning a collection of over 15,000 negatives by photographer Rollin Lane for the Leominster Historical Society. In 2019, Ron had the idea to produce a monthly television show, This Month in Leominster History, based on calendar events from Leominster s past, a continuing research project by Mike Kerrigan of the Leominster Historical Commission. Ron hosts this show with Mary Marotta of the Leominster Historical Society; he edits and puts everything together with videos, photos, music, and information about the history of Leominster. At 5:30 in the morning, just about any day of the week, you can nd Ron at the ofce of the Leominster Historical Commission, making coffee and scanning and cataloging negatives, as he says, from sea to shining sea. Putting in about 3,200 volunteer hours per year, Ron works to preserve the images of the past, to create a record of current events, and to bring the community together by sharing photos and videos of life in the city of Leominster.
