A

bridal dress is one of the most crucial elements of a wedding day – as every woman will want to look her best on the big day, and designer Vivi Valencia is here with the answer. The designer has gained quite a following, with her exquisite and delicately elaborate dresses – sparkling with fine details like lace, beads and enchanting patterns.

Being a designer is a calling for Vivi, as she was born into a family that dabbled in the garment industry. She found her passion for designing, and started designing formal dresses. From there, her penchant for style led her to designing wedding gowns. In 2000, together with her parents, Vivi started her own bridal house.

“For me, designing wedding gowns is very special, because every woman dreams about the perfect wedding dress to be worn on her wedding day, and I feel challenged to help these women’s dreams come true,” Vivi explained. “Thanks to the support of my friends and family, I’ve overcome many obstacles and gained trust to design bridal dresses for my clients from Indonesia and also abroad.”

hile it’s arguably the happiest day of someone’s life, preparing a wedding day can be stressful with many things to take care of. One of the crucial things for a bride on her wedding day is hair and makeup, and Beyond Makeup Indonesia is here to ease her mind on that score. First established in July 2016 in Bali, Beyond Makeup Indonesia is a makeup artist management company founded by Yenny Gunawan, created to help brides from all over the world look their best on their wedding day.

Founder and art director Yenny Gunawan knew from a long time ago that she wanted to be a professional makeup artist.

After she graduated from high school, she enrolled in a beauty academy in Jakarta. Although her plan was delayed for a few years, she got back on track in 2012, when she lived out her dream as a makeup artist in Bali. Rave reviews encouraged Yenny to establish her own makeup management company, and that’s when Beyond Makeup Indonesia was born.

As a makeup perfectionist with more than 10 years of professional experience, Yenny still attends international courses and events to further hone her skills and keep up with the trends. She then shares the knowledge with her team of talented makeup artists.

ne of the biggest milestones for the island of Bali last year was the inauguration of the Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK) statue. After a long wait, people could finally be amazed by the majestic statue when the park opened its doors for the first time in September. The inauguration was attended by none other than the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Ir. H. Joko Widodo, who symbolically launched the statue by signing his name on the ark and siren.

REFINED CHOCOLATE DINING EXPERIENCE AT VIS A VIS

W Marriott Hotel Surabaya recently held a unique dining experience that was surely memorable in the hearts of the diners. On 7th December, the hotel’s Vis a Vis restaurant invited discerning diners to the Incredible Chocolate Dinner, a creative collaboration between Executive Chef Andri Aryono, Krakakoa Chocolate and Lindeman’s Wines. Andri meticulously crafted a seven-course dinner menu, incorporating Krakakoa Chocolate in each one, to change the common notion that chocolate is only a sweet treat that works on desserts. Each dish was then paired with the finest selection from Lindeman’s.

The inspired dinner included seared scallop that had been marinated with a vinaigrette edamame dressing and served with a blend of smoky coconut and cashew cacao nibs, and orange salad with sea salt and pepper chocolate. The salad comprised baby green mesclun, green frisée, citrus foam and balsamic glacier with Pacitan oranges and Krakakoa’s special sea salt and peppered chocolate blend – the dish worked perfectly with a Lindeman’s Bin 75 Riesling.

Next up was the cream of chestnut soup with ginger chocolate 52% cocoa, charmingly served in a singed coconut shell. A: A typical day for me is arriving around 7.30am to prepare the day for the team. Then, as in every hotel, morning briefings with the GM and heads of departments, then our team morning briefing. Most of the morning is made up of emails and follow ups with the team to make sure we’re on track on everything we have to do, and with a team of seven talented individuals that can be a lot. Afternoon is for meetings with colleagues, guests, press… working on strategic or long-term projects, preparations for big events. Then it will depend if we have an event or not, but generally finishing around 6:30pm after making sure the team is actually going home.

Q: What’s the toughest part of your job?

A: I have the chance to work in and really influence what is happening in one of the best hotels in Bali, one of the best Ws in the world. When you work in hotels, you always dream about working for one of these dream properties, one you see as an example of a dream destination; and that’s what I do now.

Before working in hospitality and marketing I had trained to be a professional horse rider, I was also guitar teacher for four years, then I began working in bars and took an exam to be a beer sommelier in Belgium, where I come from. Working in hotels is always perceived negatively in Belgium, people see it as lowering yourself, they imagine you will be a servant or a cook. They never tell you how fascinating your career can be, that it can take you all around the world meeting so many different people.

A recording for the purists, British 2-Tone icons The Specials are set to release their first new material since their 1998 Guilty ’til Proven Innocent album. Encore also marks the return of original lead vocalist Terry Hall who last entered the studio with the band in 1981 to record the classic Ghost Town and looks set to rekindle the energetic blend of ska, reggae and rocksteady beats for which the band was famed.

Formed in 1958, the legendary O’Jays are back together for what they say will be their last recording. With a career spanning 60 years, the band’s early classics include Back Stabbers and For the Love of Money. The Last Word will see them sign off with a bang and includes the single Above the Law, which was composed by Betty Wright and Angelo Morris and released in November with a highly emotive video.

One of the most delayed and yet eagerly anticipated releases of 2018, Weezer (The Black Album) will finally be on sale this March. As a taster, the single Can’t knock the Hustle was released in October followed by Zombie Bastards later in the year. Both are available on streaming services and to download. Produced by Dave Sitek, the Black Album is classic Weezer; fun, flirtatious and with a dose of unexpected introspection.

Q: What drew you into a career in the hospitality world?

A: When I graduated university with a degree in management studies in Jamaica, my father suggested that I work in the hospitality industry. I started out as a management trainee with the Sandals Group and enjoyed myself so much that I couldn’t believe I was being paid to do this.

Q: What did you most enjoy about the job in those early days?

A: It’s actually still the same thing I enjoy now – the interaction with the guests, working with people and

focusing on creating memorable moments for the guests.

Q: Prior to working in Bali, what was your most exciting role to date?

A: This is my second stint in Bali.

Prior this I spent a year working in the corporate office in Atlanta, which was very rewarding. AYANA is an independent hotel within the Capella Hotel Group, so I had the opportunity to work with Horst H. Schulze, who is an icon in the hospitality world and has such history, information, knowledge, passion and drive. In my role as corporate director, I was able to

influence the direction of all the hotels within the group, facilitating change and alignment with the various general managers, while not being involved with the day-to-day operations. It’s very satisfying to see improvements you have brought about coming into fruition.

Q: You’re on your second stint working in Bali, what brought you back?

A: I was asked to hold the fort here in Bali during a management transition as I had experience as acting general manager here before moving to the corporate role.

Q: What’s the difference between working for an international chain and an independent hotel resort?

A: The speed of decision making. We are very independent and don’t have to deal with much bureaucracy, which allows us to be very entrepreneurial minded.

While we have a structure in terms of culture, philosophy and processes, the implementation is up to us. This allows us to be very responsive; we can come up with a plan, gain the owner’s approval and immediately implement it.

In such a dynamic industry, this this is a great benefit.

Q: Can you give me an example of this?

A: Our PR team can make a decision today about how we’re going to position ourselves, how we’re going to conceptualise and launch a specific campaign and put it on my desk, it gets signed off and tomorrow it can be actioned.

So for us it is just concept, approval, action.

Q: What, in your opinion, defines luxury in hospitality?

A: Ten years ago, luxury was defined as how ornate a hotel lobby was, the thread count of the sheets, the flat screen TV – the tangibles. This has changed with more commoditisation of luxury goods. To me, today’s luxury is time, coupled with the ability to personalise experiences.

Q: What do you think is the most underrated aspect of AYANA Resort and Spa, BALI, The Villas at AYANA, or RIMBA Jimbaran BALI by AYANA? A: We have a very visionary owner and great partners who have given us a great product. What is underrated is how we do things and why we do them.

We analyse our data very carefully, even small percentages – if there are 37 complaints from 4,000 room nights about a certain topic, we work out how to resolve it and ensure alignment throughout our team members so that we see things similarly with a common culture that binds us together.

What drew you into the hotel industry?

A: Simply, people and culture, both of which remain great motivators; the chance to work with such a variety of people and cultures provides constant learning and experiences. Q: The Langham, Hong Kong is a very sophisticated hotel, what do you enjoy most about it?

A: The combined passion of the team bringing together the detail, creativity and thoughtfulness required to deliver sophisticated service experiences. Whilst The Langham is a classic-style brand,

this doesn’t necessarily mean formal. We often receive the most positive feedback from guests around simple, thoughtful hospitality that can often be informal.

Q: Hong Kong is a melting pot of people and cultures; how do you help your team deal with such a variety of expectations from hotel guests?

A: There are some constants in all cultures, yet one of the subtle areas,

especially within the Asian cultures, is anticipating client preferences and gaining feedback. We have introduced a number of communications channels, including WeChat and IPTV messaging to allow two-way digital communications, as well as testing a new “pulse check” digital message on the first day of a guest stay to gain early feedback.

Q: Would you share a great memory from your working life with us?

A: There are so many, but one that springs to mind was a late evening exchange several years ago. I was doing a lastminute, late night walk through when I noticed one of my bar team in the kitchen shucking oysters. The kitchen team had already gone home, but she wanted to look after two guests who had walked in late and really wanted some oysters. I went to say hello to the guests and explained that May was personally getting their oysters and it turned out they were staying with us for the first time, incognito, considering the hotel for an incentive group from Australia.

Out of that small experience, we ended up having six different incentive group

bookings over the next three years! That brand loyalty started with just one small act of hospitality.

Q: What changes have you seen in the luxury hotel industry over the last few years and what changes do you expect to see in the coming years?

A: The younger generation of luxury traveller are seeking quality with more informality and spontaneous experiences.

Particularly Asian short haul travellers who book with shorter lead times and arrive with open itineraries, so we need to be agile to connect with them. In some ways, all of us become part of the concierge team. Guests are often looking for good advice and we must all be well prepared but not too scripted.

Padma Resort Ubud’s General Manager Eti Rusmiati talked to Asia Dreams about going into the hospitality business and bringing worldwide recognition to Indonesian hotel brands.

Q: How did you get into the hospitality industry?

A: I must say it was by design. I’m the fourth child out of five, and my father was the one who decided who would study what major. When I was about seven years old, my family was still living in Bogor, we often went to the Bogor National Park, and my father noticed that I was friendly, and I liked to smile and talk to foreign tourists.

That’s actually what made him decide to enrol me in tourism school. But I found out that it was more than a father’s decision, because I actually discovered my passion was in hospitality.

Q: Do you have any advice for someone looking to break into the industry?

A: Process is paramount, it’s important to go through processes, nothing is instant.

Anything that’s instant won’t last long. So, you better learn your way up from scratch, that way, when you get to a high position, you know better how to lead. Don’t be afraid of challenges, there’s nothing else to do except to face and overcome them.

Passionate about each and every adventure that comes her way, Jenny Tan found her calling in the hospitality industry.

After building some hotels and villas in Bali, she decided it was time to head back to her hometown of Sumba and build one of the first luxurious accommodations there. Jenny sat down with Asia Dreams to talk more about Lelewatu.

Q: How did you get into the real estate business in the first place?

A: I was working in sales and marketing in a company that focused on properties in Surabaya from 1994 until 1998. Then in 2003, a friend asked me to join his property business as a passive partner.

Along the way, I had to take over the whole property and I started my stint in the industry. Before I knew it, the business gained great success in buying and selling houses. As time went by, I tried to branch out to tourist-type properties.

I’ve built and operated some villas and hotels in Bali, like The Wolas Villas & Spa, Sense Hotel Seminyak and Sense Sunset Seminyak Hotel. Now I’m really excited with the latest project, Lelewatu

Resort Sumba. The complexity of the hospitality industry actually intrigued me to learn more and develop myself further in the industry. I learned how to connect with different kinds of people from this business.

Q: Has it always been a passion for you?

A: I always love new adventures, and I usually dedicate my time to do each of my projects wholeheartedly. I guess that includes my new adventure in the hospitality industry, it has become my passion.

Q: After your venture in the hospitality scene in Bali, what made you decide to open Lelewatu Resort in Sumba?

A: Sumba is an exotic island with many attractions and I found the people’s ability to stay in harmony with the beautiful nature amazing. I would really like to go back to the land where I was born, to help build the Sumba community, even in a small way. After opening some hotels in Bali, I learned that Bali has seen too many hotels, while on the other hand, there was barely any luxury resort in Sumba to accompany the incredible journeys the island has to offer. That was when the idea came to fruition.

Q: What’s the biggest obstacle you’ve come across as property developer and owner so far, and how did you overcome it?

ASIADREAMS 119

A: Upon building Lelewatu Resort Sumba, I found that the infrastructure, transportation, local manpower and many supporting elements in Sumba still needed much work and fine-tuning.

I’ve tried to work together with the local government and community to enable better access so that together we can develop and bring Sumba to betterment.

Q: What skills do you think are necessary to make your business such a booming success?

A: Communication is important. To meet, network and connect with different people from different backgrounds will do a lot for the success of any business.

In Lelewatu Resort Sumba’s case, I think I need to be able to introduce Sumba as a new destination that has world-class attractions, while maintaining Sumba’s heritage Marapu philosophy in life.

Q: For those who are not familiar yet with the resort, can you elaborate on what makes Lelewatu Resort Sumba special and why people should visit and stay?

A: The resort was built to be in harmony with the magnificent cliff-top setting, surrounding lush rainforests, private lagoon and breathtaking elevated views of the Indian Ocean. The resort is inspired by and has adopted traditional Sumba houses and arts, as evident in the local arts and unique amenities like the famous ikat Sumba weaving found at the resort. A: Never give up and keep learning. It’s all a process to make us stronger and a test to see how much we’re willing to fight for it. Love what you do and share your experiences with people who can assist you to achieve a great result in the end.
