EDIBLE PACKAGING
THE TASTIEST ECO-FRIENDLY MATERIAL
Edible packaging might sound a little science fiction, but it’s already real! These alternatives, in theory are the perfect zero waste packaging solution–simply eat your container or cutlery after you’re done with it rather than throwing it out! In this edition, we’re highlighting three companies making strides in the edible packaging world.
Presto — And The Packaging Disappears!
Notpla offers a selection of packaging products meant to “disappear back into nature without any harmful traces.” Their breakthrough project, Ooho, is an edible water bubble! If you’ve ever wanted to eat a Tide pod, this is as close as you can get. The liquid-filled pods are made from a seaweed-based film that you
Spoons with Spice!
Bakeys is the first edible spoon manufacturer, with their spoons made from three types of flour: rice, wheat and sorghum! Founded in 2010 in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh by Narayana Peesapaty, the spoons are available in eight flavours: sugar, gingercinnamon, ginger-garlic, cumin, celery, black pepper, mint-ginger, and carrot-beetroot. can eat, but they also decompose naturally in six weeks. Ooho can also hold sauces, eliminating the single-use sauce packets you get with your takeout. Perfect for events, marathons, or ecoconscious restaurants, these pods offer a fun and sustainable way to stay hydrated or enjoy condiments without plastic waste.
Oodles of Noodles
In a previous post, we highlighted Stroodles for their edible straws made of wheat as an alternative to their plastic counterparts. Since that post, Stroodles has expanded their edible packaging alternatives to include plates, bowls, spoons and even cups! The plates and bowls are made from 100% wheat bran, the outer layer of a wheat kernel, which often becomes a byproduct in the wheat milling process. The spoons are basically dry biscuits made from a combination of wheat, millet, oat, rice, barley and chickpea flour. As for their cups, they’re wafers just like ice cream cones!
Though edible packaging is available, these options often aren’t yet available at a large scale. Though these solutions may be useful for some businesses, they may not be economical for everyone.
While LeKAC doesn’t currently offer any edible packaging solutions, we do have a wide variety of plastic-free packaging alternatives for all kinds of businesses!

Here are a few terms we’ve used these last few months when working with you to create your custom packaging!
RIBBON PULL
COMPOSTABLE COATING
A plant-based, biodegradable coating applied to packaging materials to improve water or grease resistance without harming the environment. Unlike traditional plastic coatings, compostable coatings break down naturally, aligning with ecoconscious packaging trends.
A decorative and functional ribbon integrated into packaging to enhance the unboxing experience. Commonly used on rigid or luxury gift boxes, the ribbon allows for effortless opening by lifting the lid or sliding out an inner compartment.
TUCK CLOSURE
This box closure method uses a flap that folds and tucks into a slot on another face of the structure. This ensures a secure close without the use of tape or other adhesives.
NESTABLE
A packaging structure developed for efficient stacking and storage. Nestable designs allow multiple units to fit within one another when empty, reducing shipping volume and storage space. This feature is commonly seen on takeout packaging, allowing for better storage in order-filling stations too!
GUSSET/GUSSETED
Referring to the sides of a bag, reusable or kraft paper material. The capacity of a bag is measured with the gussets unfolded. When printing on all sides of a bag with gussets it is considered a 4-sided print!
PACKAGING Q & A
Q: Why are shipping rates increasing so much?
A: There are actually a few reasons rates have been increasing lately. Due to the pandemic, global supply chains have been disrupted and there’s a shortage of freight containers! That, coupled with limited staff available to work and increasing fuel prices, lead to delayed shipments. While we’re optimistic that things will go back to normal in the near future, our team is dedicated to keeping costs down for clients.
Unfortunately, there isn’t much we can do since this is a global issue, but if you’re in need of packaging soon, you may want to opt for premium or expedited shipping!
Q: When should I order my packaging?
A: Ideally, ASAP!!! The order process normally takes approximately 4 months, but we recommend ordering it as far in advance as possible.

Q: I need help designing my packaging. Does it cost extra?
A: We’ve got you covered! Our in-house graphic designer can help you bring your custom packaging vision to life. This includes the design layout and even 3D mockups! The best part? This service is included in our price!
Q: Are there any hidden fees I need to know about?
A: No! Our pricing includes shipping/handling, customs/duties and plate charges. The only fee that can vary is the local delivery fee which your consultant will let you know about ahead of time. If anything changes, rest assured your consultant will let you know as soon as possible!
Q: I don’t need packaging, but I love your work! Is there another way I can work with LeKAC?
