The Entertainment Secretaries Council have a new President, with Mr. Dennis Tarry stepping down, Mr. Dave Freeman, former Vice President,is now the new President.

We wish him well in his new post.

Did you recognise the artist in the picture last month playing guitar?? Well it was Trevor Stewart who was around the club scene back in the 70s and 80s. Trevor now runs a well established entertainment agency Swan Entertainments.

THE 64th BLACKPOOL CLUBLAND COMMAND PERFORMANCE 2013 First of all thanks to Alan and Colleen for inviting us back up to Blackpool for their prestigious Command Performance Night, which was a big success yet again, apart from the annoyance of people talking non-stop on the table next to us ALL night whilst the acts were performing!! Even when the compere, who I had prompted earlier, asked for respect of noise volume while acts performed, they didn’t even hear him!!! We had this trouble a few years ago, and I thought we had sorted it out, I think maybe someone should walkabout and try and keep a bit better order..

With this I will try to give you a report on the fine quality of the acts that took to the Horseshoe Bar stage! First up was compere Carl Schofield for me, there is no-one to beat him, he is supreme, a class on his own, and what a change in his Rap, which he normally does in the middle or at the end of the show, but wow, straight in at the beginning, introducing what acts were due to take to the stage within his excellent rap! Along with his usual fast gags etc. he was brilliant. He then introduced Vex, two girls, who have in the past both worked as solo acts, but now combine to create harmonies, covering classic songs from Queen to Lady Gaga etc. They have been working in Germany in various British Army venues. For me personally I thought they were a little weak! Sorry girls.

Young male vocalist Trevor Craig, who I’m told has been on Tv’s C.I.T.Vs Copycat Kids and The X Factor, has been singing since the age of 9, Trevor covers songs from Roy Orbison, BeeGees, Meatloaf, Killers etc.

Next came Beebi Del from Barnsley, Beebi worked alongside Marti Caine winning Search For A Star, and worked many summer seasons with Jimmy James and The Vagabonds.

Working small cruise ships, her repertoire is huge, songs from Celine Dion, Bette Midler and Duffy to West End shows Cats, Jekyll and Hyde etc. etc. the list is endless, a young lady who has a powerful voice, and I’m sure she is an act very much sought after, well done Beebi.

The second comedy act was James Brandon, what a great act, from The Devil Went Down To Georgia, his violin exploding, his baby crying/singing, the dancing nuns, gags by the bucket load, what a sensational comedy act!!! We also saw Michael Jackson as you would never dream of seeing him, (if he was still alive) I would pay good money to see this guy again, top draw entertainment. Clubs need more of this type of act.

Alicia Brady, like Trevor started at the ripe age of 9, studying Ballet, Jazz, Modern and Tap from the age of 2, then at 9 appeared on Kids Stars In Their Eyes, she has also background from The Institute Of Contemporary Music Performance - London, Alicia has all the right qualifications for any venue and would entertain audiences young and old alike.

Back To Back I’ve seen before, only last year they performed on Channel 5s Big Brother Show and ITV's Emmerdale live episode, multi - award instrumental harmony duo, originally from Cumbria but for the last 3 years mainly the Blackpool circuit.

Apart from the comics for me the class act of the night was Dean Alexander, one of those singers who makes the hair stand up on your backs! What a fantastic vocal range and powerful too! Songs from the 50’s to present day, he can also ‘cross over’ by this he starts singing in English, changes to French to Spanish back to English and even Latin and Italian.

Performing all over the world this guy is unbelievable. What a talent! Final act of the night was male trio Fuel, all three guys take lead vocals at one stage or another, they also have various dance routines within their show, songs from the Swing era, to Motown etc. all this and superbly kept together by Carl who also did a fantastic spot himself. Well done Brian Cliff and Alan Pilsborough another first class show! Hopefully we will see you next year!!

Wigston Royal British Legion On Easter Monday we went to Thurmaston Progressive WMC, where we had the pleasure of seeing the fantastic live band from Manchester, Beardsmith. I saw this band last year on the Blackpool Command Show and in the short set they delivered I was completely knocked out by the immense talent this very young band have, so seizing the opportunity to see the full show at Thurmaston was a must do. The band consists of a father and his five kids, but on this night the father had a hand injury, so they did it without him. What an incredible band this is, all of them having the ability to swap instruments with all of them singing lead vocals they play songs by the likes of Bon Jovi, AC/DC, Stereophonics, The Kinks and an amazing version of Wipe Out. It was a great night out with a near to capacity concert room and I believe they will be back there very soon so go and see them, I intend to, one of the best bands I’ve seen in all of the years I’ve been watching bands, which is many.

The entertainment at the Club continuing in March was a fantastic show by three piece Crackerjack. It’s a very original show with various costume changes along with a touch of comedy including an Andy Pandy routine during the bingo interval. Following the many pleas to book them back soon, I did do and they are here again in August, don’t forget to look out for that and don’t miss out on it.

The month ended on Easter Saturday with the welcome return to the club for local vocalist Jay who, as always kept the room full all night with his amazing singing voice and guitar playing, some of which he did with no backing tracks, still proving to be one of the best singers in Leicester, he’s a very popular act here.

April began with the welcome return to the club for Sheffield male/female duo B'dazzled. I was in Blackpool so unfortunately missed them but was told once again, they gave us a full dance floor at the end of the night.

The monthly paid show was next and this time we had two tribute bands on the same night that the almost full concert room thoroughly enjoyed. The Ultimate Bee Gees and Ultimate Abba delivered two very authentic sets apiece with top quality voices and appropriate stage costumes. Just a few of the hits performed were Night Fever, Stayin’ Alive, I’ve Got To Get A Message To You, You Should Be Dancing, Words, How Deep Is Your Love, Waterloo, SOS, Does Your Mother Know, Super Trouper, Dancing Queen and Knowing Me, Knowing You. A good atmosphere evening of a very high standard.

This month on Friday 21st is a Motown Night with the outstanding female trio The Heatwaves along with a Motown disco. Tickets are on sale now at the club priced only £7.

Next up was the welcome return after a few years for Birmingham male/female duo Side By Side. A brother and sister act, they both possess excellent singing voices along with pleasant personalities. Soul and Motown songs interjected with pop songs from all eras impressed throughout.

Following them was, for me, one of the best acts on the circuit, male/female duo Penny Black who travelled all the way from Wales to entertain us. They’ve enjoyed a long career, and in fact, the first time I saw them was in Blackpool in the 90’s when they were doing a summer season there. They play songs from the 60’s to present day to suit all ages and tastes with tremendous singing and playing, great stuff.

I did well on my football predictions this season, Man Utd, Nottingham Forest, Doncaster and Rotherham. All there or thereabouts. Man Utd again next season, the other three will be revealed in August, I bet you can’t wait. See ya next month..... Steve Rushin (Ent Sec)

BLACKPOOL COMMAND SHOW In April, six of us went to Blackpool for the weekend and the first night we were there we attended the 64th Blackpool Command Show and as always the standard on show was very high. A show, as always superbly organised by Alan Pilborough and produced by Brian Cliff. Compere Carl Schofield kicked things off with a rap explaining who we were going to see throughout the night, very clever indeed and once again, he kept the show flowing all night without any hitches.

Female duo Vex were on first and although very competent, didn’t come over too strong and I don’t think they will go any further than the Clubland circuit, and the same goes to the second act, vocalist Alicia Brady, a good voice and personality but nothing stronger than acts seen week in, week out in the clubs.

The bar was risen next with male/female duo Back 2 Back who appear in Blackpool a lot doing the clubs and some of the big shows, appearing on the bill at the Grand Theatre. Top quality singing and playing and a well oiled precision performance. Following them was a hilarious comedian by the name of James Brandon, who hails from Yorkshire and his original material had the room in stitches with clean hilarity and things you wouldn’t see coming in his musical stuff.

Young singer Trevor Craig, given the right breaks could enjoy a prosperous future as he’s got a good vocal range. The compere Carl Schofield is also a comedian and he gave us a little stand up spot going down well as always.

Two excellent vocalists next, for me the best act of the night: from Barnsley female Beebi Del put on an exquisite performance with a tremendous voice and her friendly personality shone through. She has the ability to sing in any environment be it theatre, club, cruise ship or a summer show. Vocalist Dean Alexander from Cambridge was also very impressive, singing pop songs to Pavarotti with ease. Also he can sing anywhere and should go far.

Finishing the night were male trio Fuel, who put on a slick fast moving set with all three having talented lead vocals and harmonies along with well rehearsed dance movements, there’s quite a few acts like this around so they’ve got plenty of competition, but could go a long way, they’re certainly good enough.

A very good show but I don’t think the ignorant people on the next table to us saw it, as they were talking loudly all night. Carl told people to give order but I think they were drowning him out at the time so they didn’t register it. Why do they have to sit next to us, oh well, we still enjoyed it.

The rest of the weekend was good too. On Saturday we went to The Viking to enjoy another great show with compere Buddy Lee, The Sensation Dancers, comedian Carl Schofield and vocalist Brad Leigh Scott and on the Sunday night we went to The H & A Club to see the fabulous Mike Bennett and Chic, a top class ventriloquist.

Nice weather, a win for me on the Grand National sweep for the first time, excellent accommodation, thanks to Lionel and Sara at the Lynbar and great company with Val, Dave, Sara, Mink and Tess. Looking forward to two more visits to Blackpool and the 65th Command Show next year.

WE HAVE REDUCED ALL OUR DRAUGHT BEERS BY 50p A PINT! (FOR A LIMITED PERIOD ONLY) Originally formed back in 1888 in Gallowtree Gate, we moved to Humberstone Gate in 1923, in 1973 purchasing the property next door to become the club we are today.

Like a lot of clubs in the country we've had our good and bad times, but I'm glad to say we are one of the lucky ones, surviving today mainly due to the continued support of the public and the hard working staff and committees over the 125 years.

Some of the past and present committee members include (in no particular order) Len Thorpe (former President), Bert Thorpe (Vice President), Bert Norwood (House & Stock, 13 years, 25 in all), Bob Kirkup and George Kirkup (House & Stock) - both over 20 years. George Haycock (Treasurer) before Alf Bishop who was Treasurer for 35 years (38 years in all); Harry Tench who was Secretary for 30 years and also President of the Leicestershire C.I.U branch, Arthur Marshall who served on the committee for over 40 years, with 30 years as Entertainment Secretary. John Harris was formerly House & Stock, Vice President and President and is now on the C.I.U. National Executive Committee.

Cliff Eversfield who next year completes his 50th year and is currently the club's President; Eric Johnson who is now in his 54th year - Eric was Entertainment Secretary for many years and is currently Secretary of the club and also President of the Leicestershire C.I.U. branch. The current committee comprises J. Conroy, J. Heggs, D. Turner, L. Faulkner and R. Penny.
