My Cancer Personal Experience Dzon M. Nguyen, DDS, FAGD

Nothing prepares you for hearing the words “you have cancer.” March, 2013, I was diagnosed with Thyroid cancer and a month later I had my cancer successfully removed. I am one of the lucky ones as my cancer was caught early and I was spared. How my cancer was caught is an interesting story. My thyroid has always had a 1cm nodule. My physician and I have monitored it over the last ten years. Yearly blood works and bi-yearly ultrasounds showed no changes, always normal. It was only when my sister had her thyroid removed because of it’s enlargement that alerted me. During her surgery, her thyroid was biopsied and to the surgeon’s surprise, it was cancerous. This prompted me to have mine

biopsied. My doctor felt a biopsy was not necessary because the lack of any changes over the years. I was insistent and had the needle biopsied done. This was the one decision that changed my life forever. The biopsied had 19 specimen and they all came back positive for cancer. The clear message here is when in doubt, biopsy! As my friend Eric Statler has said, it’s peoples lives and doing our part will save someone. It only takes one person to make a difference. I was thankful that I had caught it early. Description of Course Content Fixed removable hybrid prosthetic therapy has become a viable option for the edentulous or terminal dentition patient. Many implant companies have embraced this existing treatment option including All-on-4 ™ (Nobel Biocare), SmartFix ™ (Dentsply) and others. However, hybrids can pose challenges even for the dentist that is skilled in removable prosthetics and implants. The participation course will focus on walking the dentist through the hybrid procedure start to finish. Emphasis will be placed on avoiding common hybrid treatment errors. effected, it made what we can do more vigilant. The reality is that it can be any of us! I hope that it doesn’t take a tragic event to remind us to do the right thing. Cancer if caught early can change the outcome from living or dying. We can all do our part to screen and help with early detection.

Instructor Qualifications Keith M. Phillips received his DMD from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, a certificate in Prosthodontics with an MSD from the University of Washington and is a diplomat of The American Board of Prosthodontics as well as a Fellow in the American College of Prosthodontics. Keith is currently an affiliate Associate Professor at 4 major Universities. He is also a guest lecturer at the Kois Center in Seattle, WA.
