Suggested Tips When Purchasing a New Buck
(since 1982)

1. Bucks are well developed and
properly cared for and should adequately cover females. 2. Young bucks should not be expected to breed more than 25 females the first year. As they are still growing, give them grain and grass or quality hay. DO NOT OVERWORK YOUNG BUCKS. 3. After placing a young buck with females, allow several weeks for the animal to adjust and begin servicing the herd. 4. Unfamiliar bucks will fight when first introduced. If bucks must be housed in the same pen, ensure it is small enough that the animals can’t gain enough momentum to hurt each other. Otherwise, placement in adjacent pens for several days before group housing should relieve this problem. 5. Ensure the success of your kid crop by periodically checking to see if does are settling. 6. Keep the new buck around the barn or in a small lot for at least a week after arrival. This will allow him to become accustomed to his new surroundings.
