Walk, bike, enjoy! Strolling or cycling on miles of traffic-free country trails, exploring history, encountering all kinds of wildlife – River Lee Country Park offers so many different walking and biking experiences you’ll be spoilt for choice. So it’s well worth taking a look at visitleevalley.org.uk to plan your perfect route. No bike? No problem! Just hire your wheels at Broxbourne Old Mill and Meadows 1 , open between April and October.

And don’t miss the incredible Lee Valley White Water Centre 3 – host venue to the London 2012 Canoe Slalom Events. This is where you can ride the rapids in a white water raft. Go to visitleevalley.org.uk for opening times, if you dare! Adventurers will also love the multi activity outdoor centre at Herts Young Mariners’ Base, Cheshunt 4 . Here you can learn canoeing, sailing, climbing and caving all at one superbly equipped location.

Family fun Have a wild time

Play the natural way

At Lee Valley Park Farms 5 kids can get up close and personal with an amazing array of animals. They’ll love the cuddly sheep and snuffly rare breed pigs, the llamas, reindeer and whole family of charming meerkats.

A specially created play space encourages kids to play with imagination in a safe, natural environment. The emphasis is on physical challenges, interaction with the landscape and 100% fun. It’s that kind of ‘old school’, totally absorbing play that makes the hours fly by. Just park at Pindar car park 6 and let them loose!

Plus with imaginative play spaces it’s a brilliant place to run wild too, you’ll squeal with delight as you slide the slope on the new Alpine Adventure! From toddlers to school age kids, they can let off steam on the giant bouncing pillow, scale a spider tower, dig in the sand, explore Piglet’s Paradise and ride the combine harvester. There’s also a working dairy farm just a short stroll or tractor and trailer ride away, where you can see how a working dairy farm works and how the cows and calves are cared for.

Four legged fun

Discover Disc Golf Instead of using clubs to putt balls into holes, in Disc Golf you throw specially designed discs into baskets. Whoever completes the course with the least number of throws is the winner. The nine ‘hole’ course is located near Pindar car park 6 and you can buy discs at nearby Lee Valley White Water Centre 3 , YHA London Lee Valley 9 or bring your own, so why not give it a try? But be warned, Disc Golf can be addictive!

With a 500m dog agility course of jumps, hoops, high walks and an A frame, a dog’s life has never been more fun than in River Lee Country Park 6 .

Splashing times At Lee Valley Boat Centre 2 you can hire rowing boats, pedalos and canoes to explore the gently flowing River Lee, or cruise at your leisure on an electric boat. 1

Come to stay

You’ll be amazed by the variety of wildlife that’s thriving in River Lee Country Park. With clearly waymarked, traffic-free paths and trails, strolling into the natural world is a relaxed, delightful experience.

Time travel is easy in River Lee Country Park! Waltham Abbey Gardens 8 is the site of one of Britain’s largest Augustinian abbeys, and the reputed resting place of King Harold after his defeat at Hastings in 1066. Tranquil rose gardens and the nearby Cornmill Meadows Dragonfly Sanctuary also help you feel far away from the stresses and strains of modern life.

You’ll find loads of ways to enjoy a bite to eat in River Lee Country Park. Take a long lazy picnic in the wide open peaceful spaces, or spend time watching the waters glide by at a riverside pub. There are plenty of tasty options at Lee Valley Park Farms café 5 , and the stunning Lee Valley White Water Centre 3 offers a stylish café terrace where you can watch the daredevil rafters tackle the rapids – check opening times at visitleevalley.org.uk. Broxbourne Old Mill and Meadows 1 and the YHA London Lee Valley 9 also provide tempting refreshments.

There are so many more days out than one and a busy calendar of events happening all year round, so why not come to stay? Pitch a tent, park your caravan or get cosy in a family cabin at either of the three family-friendly campsites. Alternatively, check in at the YHA London Lee Valley 9 and make yourself at home in one of the six Scandinavian style lodges, complete with ensuite twin, double and family rooms.

Fishers Green 7 is the ideal start point. You’ll find bird hides not far from the car park, where you can view lake, wader scrapes and farmland habitats. At the Bittern Information Point on Seventy Acres Lake you could well spot the elusive Bittern in winter, and in summer the lake is home to a large Common Tern colony. Look out for a flash of cobalt blue as Kingfisher dart across the waterways. Walking around the lake you can learn about the local Otter population, and keep an eye out for them as you enjoy a relaxed picnic at the water’s edge.

At the top end of River Lee Country Park you’ll find Broxbourne Old Mill & Meadows 1 . The original mill was mentioned in the 1086 Domesday Book, and there’s still a working water wheel here in action most weekends.
