Planning Commission Turns Down Sunrise Plan Board of Supervisors Will Have Final Say on Proposal for McLean Senior Living BRIAN TROMPETER Staff Writer

Citing potential adverse neighborhood impacts and excessive existing institutional uses in the vicinity, the Fairfax County Planning Commission on March 29 voted 10-1 to recommend the Board

of Supervisors turn down Sunrise Development Inc.’s special-exception application to build an assisted-living facility in McLean. Sunrise hopes to build a 73-room, 90bed facility on 3.7 acres at 1988 Kirby Road. The triangle-shaped property is located at the road’s intersection with West-

moreland Street and now is home to the Surge Community Church building. The commission’s March 8 public hearing on the application drew 49 listed speakers and lasted five hours. Commissioner John Ulfelder (Dranesville District) deferred decision for three weeks, then moved to recommend against the

application. “After carefully considering the staff report, all the materials submitted for the record and the extensive testimony at the public hearing, I have concluded that the proposed facility is simply incompatible Continued on Page 22
