The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors voted 9-1 Feb. 28 to advertise a real estate tax rate of $1.13 per $100 assessed valuation, the same rate suggested by County Executive Edward Long Jr. when presenting his proposed fiscal budget two weeks earlier. That’s the same rate last year, but due to slightly higher assessments in 2017, a typical homeowner would see tax bills rise about $40 this year. Before finalizing their decision, supervisors defeated on a 7-3 vote an amendment by Supervisor Kathy Smith (D-Sully) to advertise a tax rate 2 cents higher to encourage what Smith said would be a “full and open discussion with the community.” “There are a lot of challenges to make this community the kind we want to live in,” she said. Supervisor Daniel Storck (D-Mount Vernon), who like Smith formerly served on the county’s School Board, also favored advertising a higher rate. “The budgets going forward don’t look any better or any prettier,” Storck said. Supervisor Catherine Hudgins (D-Hunter Mill), who also voted for Smith’s amendment favoring a higher rate, said doing so would signal to county’s diverse community that officials are serious about how the county generates and spends its money. “If we call Fairfax County a great place to live,
