2017 Saw Political Changes, Redevelopment Projects, Transportation Advances in the Region BRIAN TROMPETER Staff Writer
2017 will be remembered not only for the non-stop controversies swirling around the Trump administration, but also for occurrences – both good and bad – that affected local residents’ lives. 2017 saw the approval of several major redevelopment projects, strong Democratic gains in the House of Delegates following victories in the November elec-
tion, kickoffs of important transportation initiatives and the deaths of area residents both famous and unsung. Here are some key occurrences: JANUARY: • The McLean Citizens Association’s board of directors on Jan. 4 unanimously passed two resolutions urging Fairfax County officials to make “meaningful structural changes” to pension plans for new and non-vested county employees by

MCA’s resolutions recommended those changes be implemented by July 1, 2018. Vested county employees (i.e., those on the job at least five years) would not be affected by the proposals. • The Fairfax County Park Author-
ity rejected a proposal by Oakton-based tennis-instruction company Elite 10S to build a lighted enclosure over a pair of tennis courts at Nottoway Park in the Vienna area, officials said Jan. 5. “We had a lot of public input concerning its impact on current [tennis] players,” said Park Authority spokesman Judy Pedersen. “We also have a historic building, Hunter House, near where they want to Continued on Page 4
