he Stafford County School Board has approved Head Start’s enrollment in a program that will give more than 4,500 additional free meals to students. The school board agreed Aug. 9 to enroll its county Head Start program in the federal government’s Community Eligibility Provision, which works with highpoverty schools to provide breakfast and lunch at no cost to students. Individual household applications are not required and federal reimbursements are provided to the school based on the percentage of identified students. Enrollment in the program allows the Gari Melcher Education Complex to provide free breakfast and lunch to all students, according to discussion. “In the past, we have been able to serve a free breakfast and lunch to all students that were part of the Head Start program,” said Berkley Dunbrack, director of school nutrition for Stafford County Public Schools. “With this program, we are able to extend that status to any alternative education students that are in the building as well.” Meals are served family-style at Head Start, which “promotes the importance of sharing food as a community,” according to Dunbrack. “Students are much more likely to try something new if they see their peers eating it, and SCHOOL it allows them to further PAGE 13 develop social behaviors.

he movie theater is the next big attraction at The Garrison at Stafford — a new development planned off Garrisonville Road. According to Clark Leming, a lawyer speaking for the site’s development company, The Pence Group: “We’re anxious to move ahead.” Leming said that the deal with Regal Entertainment Group is “absolutely not final” but plans are looking good. “The Pences are very optimistic that they will be able to get the the-

ater open in the fall of 2017,” Leming said. Discussions are still ongoing with businesses considering calling the 500,000-square-foot, mixed-use community home; but part of the planned development includes a building that can be used as a movie theater, with Regal expected to become the tenant. On Tuesday, the Stafford County Board of Supervisors unanimously agreed to amendments to proffered conditions at the site, allowing for alternative building and parking layouts in addition to the originally approved layout. One amendment also would modify the

way building heights are measured on the site. The approved proposal will also allow for angled or parallel parking on the site. Initially referred to as Stafford Village, the mixed-use property consists of 45 acres and is located on the south side of Garrisonville Road at the intersection with Travis Lane in North Stafford. “We actually see things happening and I’m pretty optimistic about this project,” said Stafford Supervisor Robert Thomas, R-George PROFFER Washington.
