All-Star Teams Finish First, Second in State Tourneys Arlington Babe Ruth Storm baseball teams finished first and second in recent Ripken State BASEBALL Cal Tournaments in the intermediate all-star 50/70 classification. n In the 12-under Majors age group in Henrico, Arlington won the state championship with a 4-1 record, defeating Williamsburg in the title game. Arlington won its first three games over Shenandoah, 14-1, Glen Allen, 9-5, and Williamsburg, 6-3, before losing to Williamsburg, 1-0. The next day, Arlington defeated Williamsburg to earn the championship. The Arlington 12s received strong pitching from a deep staff and steady play from its defense.

With the bat, Arlington continued its show of power, amassing 18 home runs from eight different players in the five games. The players making up Arlington’s roster are Adam Astacio, Dillon Bass, Quinn Brennan, Patrick Church, Dean Kampschror, Nathan Knowles, Thor Koomey, Jake Lynes, Zach Moss, Ketz Murray, Jack O’Connor and James Tallon. Greg Knowles is the manager and Mike Murray and Andrew Church are the coaches. The 12s return to action July 13 in the Southeast Regional Tournament in Glen Allen. Arlington’s first game was against Winter Park, N.C. The 50/70 refers to the diamond size.

The mound is 50 feet from home plate and the base paths are 70, compared to 46 feet for the mound and 60 feet for the base paths in traditional Little League play. Prior to the state tourney, Arlington won the Showdown in the Valley over the Memorial Day weekend. The team outscored its opponents 46-13 to finish with a 5-0 record. n The Arlington 11-under all-stars finished second in the state 50/70 tournament in Churchville, losing its final two games to Glen Allen, 11-1 and 6-3. That came after Arlington won its first three contests, including a 4-2 victory over Glen Allen in the winners’-bracket final. In its first two games, Arlington blanked Summit Point, 13-0, then out-

Arlington defeated Springfield, 3-2, in its first game, then lost to Falls

Church, 5-4 and 6-5. In the 5-4 loss, Falls Church scored the walk-off winning run in the last of the seventh inning. In the 6-5 loss, Arlington scored four runs in the top of the seventh on four hits and two walks, and had runners on second and third when the game ended on a called third strike. The Arlington players were Ryan Berry, Roman Dangel, Kevin Elder, Henry Erwin, Daniel Halton, Toby Heidrich, Aiden Henning, Liam Holland, Haimong Huang, Will Jones, Aiden Lowe, Eamon Schmidt, Luke Sedor and Sean Werfel. nament playoff game to advance to the state tournament. Arlington defeated McLean, 11-1, in that contest behind solid pitching from Matt Friedman. During the tournament, Daniel McCreedy sparked the Arlington offense with a two-run homer. Arlington hit up and down the lineup. Ryan Edelstein also pitched well. The other all-stars were Alex Brandt, Patrick Cantwell, Russell Edwards, Thomas Fortier, Jack Matechak, Vincent McGean, Mac Mulock, Reid Nagurka, Evan Rusk, Alex Saenz, William Sherr, Will Siegal and Tyler Spicer. Arlington finished 0-2 in the state tournament. The team was managed by David Timpane and coached by Michael Timpane and Miles Turner. n The District 4 champion Arlington Little League American All-Stars for players ages 11-12 in the Intermediate 50/70 Division finished 1-2 in last week’s state tournament. Arlington won its first game, 22-5, over Caroline County, then lost to Fort Hunt, 6-5, and Halifax, 12-8. n The Arlington Senior Babe Ruth 13-under Prep League All-Stars lost in the playback championship game to Vienna in the District 6 Tournament at Waters Field in Vienna on July 10. Arlington lost its final two games of the tournament to Vienna after an earlier win over the team.

2:17.90. The girls 12-under free relay of Helen Otteni, Avery Nassetta, Sophie Yoder and Von Seelen won in 2:02.44. Both 12-under teams broke league records. n The Arlington Knights of Columbus Holy Mackerels (1-2) lost to the Burke Centre Stingers, 248-196, in Colonial Swimming League White Division action July 9. Mac Marsh was a triple winner for the Holy Mackerels. Double winners were Alexandra Browne, Reid Moneymaker, Nicolas Reeves and Zach Rosenthal. Fort Myer did not submit any information about the meet. n In NVSL diving action, Dominion Hills (1-1) and Overlee (2-0) are off to strong starts. Overlee is tied for first in Division 2 and Dominion Hills competes in Division 5. Also, Arlington got a pair of hits and four RBI from Josh Jones, a three-run double by Gus Nathanson in the fifth inning to break the game open, two sacrifice bunts (one a squeeze) from Sam Nichols, a double by Will Cantwell (two steals), and RBI singles from Devon Wilmoth and Trey Haley (two steals). Neil Carroll scored two runs. Hunter Spicer started and worked five innings to get the win and Will Fitzpatrick threw a scoreless inning of relief. “We put the ball in play and made things happen on offense, and Hunter got the job done and threw strikes,” Krulfeld said. Vienna pitchers combined to walk seven, hit two batters, threw three wild pitches and balked twice. In Arlington’s five-inning 12-0 win, Jones and Rusco combined for a nohitter.
