Residential streets will be higher on the priority scale the next time a major snowstorm hits Arlington, under a new strategy by the county government to rebound from a January snow response that generated middling grades from residents. County officials announced March 15 that, in cases where large amounts of snow fall in a concentrated period, they will deploy plows in neighborhoods earlier than has been the case in the past. Previously, neighborhood streets got attention only after all arterial routes were passable. That change, and other efforts under consideration, “may require some additional resources,” Deputy County Manager James Schwartz said in a presentation to County Board members. But county staff will not be asking for additional funds in the fiscal 2017 budget, hoping to rely on other revenue sources, including the federal government. The Jan. 22-23 storm, which dropped 2 feet or more of snow on Northern Virginia, cost the Arlington government about $4 million in response costs, County Manager Mark Schwartz said. County officials are hopeful of recouping about half the cost
