Sports Briefs OVERLEE DIVERS UNDEFEATED: The
undefeated Overlee divers (5-0) won Division 2 of the Northern Virginia Swimming League. In its most recent meets, Overlee defeated Crosspointe, 42-26, then LeeGraham, 49-19, to conclude the season. For Overlee against Crosspointe, Abbey Shumsky took first place in freshman girls and Logan Gundlach was second in the freshman boys. In junior girls, Sophia Bailey, Michayla Eisenberg and Olivia Grabman swept the category. Junior boy Matthew Kress and intermediate girl Laine Stoker finished first, as did senior girl Hannah Karlin and senior boy Jacob Kreider. Also in senior boys, Jonathan Teitelbaum was third. n Arlington’s Dominion Hills (4-1) finished second in Division 5 diving of the NVSL. Dominion Hills defeated Greenbriar, 47-25, in its final meet. Fairfax won Division 5 with a 5-0 record, nipping Dominion Hills, 37-35, when the teams met. n In Division 1, Arlington Forest was 0-5 and Donaldson Run was 0-5 in Division 3. ARLINGTON FOREST SWIM TEAM HAS BIG MEET: The Arlington Forest Tigers
had a big day at the Northern Virginia Swimming League’s Division 7 individual championships, with nine first-place finishers and four new team records. Eli Martin set team records in the 10-andunder boys 50-meter freestyle and the 100 individual medley. Natalie Martin broke a 19-year-old team record in the 13-14 butterfly and Bryn Edwards broke her own team record in the 15-18 breaststroke. The Tigers had three double-winners. Alex Hans won the 8-under freestyle and backstroke. Eli Martin won the free and IM. Edwards was first in the breast and IM. Other first-place finishers were Natalie Martin in the fly, Leo Goco in the 1112 free and David Gallion in the 15-18 breast. Second were Zoe Edwards, Luke Risacher and Bryce Luncher. Health Club Honey Badgers team won the recent Virginia State Junior Team Tennis Championships in the 14-andunder Intermediate Division at the University of Mary Washington. One of the players was Anthony Guerrera, a rising eighth-grader at Williamsburg Middle School. He went undefeated, playing nine matches, five singles and four mixed doubles. His doubles partner was Katherine Davis of Potomac School. Isabel Tate, a rising sophomore at Yorktown High School, played and won two significant singles matches. Other players included James Fishman, Eric Kadel, Dana Edson and Isabel Zhang. The team was coached by Eben Donkor and Casey McClure.
High School Roundup WAKEFIELD COACH TO BE INDUCTED:
Wakefield High School girls basketball coach Marcia Richardson will be inducted into the University of Maryland’s Sports Hall of Fame this coming October. Richardson, a physical-education teacher at Wakefield, was a standout women’s basketball player at Maryland from 1981 to 1984. She was chosen AllAmerican as well as all-Atlantic Coast Conference for her efforts during her time with the Terps, and she remains 26

one of the program’s all-time scoring leaders. Richardson scored 1,630 career points. This past season as Wakefield’s coach, Richardson and the Warriors enjoyed one of their best seasons in years, finishing 17-8. Wakefield was second in to Edison in the Capitol Conference Tournament, then advanced to the 5A North Region Tournament where the team compiled a 1-1 record with a close second- round loss to Atlee.
FOOTBALL OPENERS SET: The dates are set for the 2016 high school football openers for Arlington’s three publicschool varsity teams. The Washington-Lee Generals start first on Friday, Aug. 26 on the road against the Mount Vernon Majors at 7 p.m. in a non-conference game.
