Hey Grinder Guy, are there any new equipment improvements in the industry I should look at? by Dave Whitelaw Good question. We are all busy. Trying to keep up with all the new designs and options for each piece of equipment is a daunting task. But maybe a new improvement that is insignificant to one recycler may be a major cost savings for another. With that in mind, throughout the coming year, I am going to try and do a better job of posting useful and significant improvements on my Askthegrinderguy.com blog. It seems the move toward more efficient electric powered machines continues. Fuel usage per unit has become the major cost factor for everyone. Thus, electric powered equipment is becoming an attractive option. In Oct at the WHEN Recycling Expo in Henrietta, NY, several grinder manufacturers were present. I spent a few minutes with Scott Harrington of Rotochopper discussing the new Rotochopper EC-366. It is Rotochopper’s third generation electric horizontal grinder that features a dual purpose design that can handle both wood and shingles. This unit improves upon their “perfect in one pass” design. After 15 years of electric grinder experience, improvements in wear liners, the unit’s conveyor system,

For more information on the new EC-366, visit www.rotochopper.com Along the line of power sources for recycling equipment, the Komptech line of screeners and recycling equipment has expanded its hybrid power offerings to four product lines. Their Trommel screen and the Multistar screeners are two of the product lines with available

With onboard generators that use 1.5-2 gallons of fuel per hour while screening up to 600 yards per hour, fuel costs are greatly reduced. The Komptech units also come with an optional ground power plug so there is no need to run the generator at sites with available electric power. wear tip that provides a denser end product that renders 2-3 additional tons per load by cutting instead of grabbing the material. The new Razorback Insert can efficiently chop and break down palm waste, reduce wrapping, and increasing run time efficiency. The Razorback works best in medium contaminated materials. It is recommended for use in primary grind and regrind of

Morbark, Inc. acquires Boxer Equipment from Mertz Manufacturing WINN, MI — Morbark®, Inc., a leading manufacturer of tree care, sawmill, recycling, forestry, biomass chipping and grinding equipment, announced that it has completed the acquisition of Boxer Equipment, a product line of Mertz Manufacturing, LLC (Mertz), that manufactures and globally markets a full line of compact utility loaders (also known as mini-skid steers) and attachments. As part of the transaction, Morbark has acquired all product designs, intel-

lectual property and manufacturing tools, as well as existing parts, completed units and other inventory. The Boxer acquisition will enable Morbark to continue to solidify the company’s strategy to build equipment that creates opportunities for their customers, dealer network and employees. This acquisition not only enhances those opportunities in Morbark’s existing tree service and rental markets, but also allows Morbark to expand their market presence and

current equipment offerings to a broader range of industries and end users, including, but not limited to, landscapers, irrigation and trenching contractors, property owners and general contractors of all sizes. Steve Ballinger, president, Mertz, added, “In seeking the optimal buyer for the Boxer product line, we looked for a company that had its own manufacturing capability, as well as shared our desire to see the line continue to develop, grow and

realize its full potential. We know without a doubt that Morbark shares this same vision and will apply the necessary resources to bring it to fruition.” Manufacturing of the Boxer Equipment line, attachments and aftermarket parts, is currently being moved to Morbark’s 1.1-million-square-foot factory and corporate headquarters in Winn, MI. In other news, Colorbiotics introduced the Global Equipment Monitoring (GEM) System. The GEM system, developed for use with Colorbiotics Sahara X Series coloring equipment, is a fully customizable computer program that allows operators to automatically meter, monitor and verify colorant and water output. This program elevates the world’s most advanced coloring system to unparalleled levels of efficiency. The GEM system allows a single operator effortless control and monitoring capabilities of either one or several Sahara coloring units from one convenient portal. Therefore, an owner or manager can view the equipment operation in real time from an office chair and make necessary adjustments. For more information about Colorbiotics, Sahara X colorant equipment and GEM quality control monitoring system, contact Colorbiotics at 888663-6980. In 2012, Amerimulch® introduced the Marksman™ Volume Measuring System. The Marksman is available in two models; Platinum and Gold. The Marksman Gold model constantly measures fluctuating production rates, then calculates and displays the corresponding colorant and water application rates per yard. It can be used on any color unit. The Marksman Platinum model only works in

conjunction with the Amerimulch ColorTrom®. The Platinum has all the features of the Marksman Gold model but also auto-

matically adjusts color and water rates. Both units offer the ability to view equipment operation from a PC, a Smartphone

YANKTON, SD — Through charitable employee and community contributions, local manufacturer Kolberg-Pioneer, Inc. was able to help in efforts to raise more than $20,000 for employee Linda Stock, who has worked for the company since 1987 in the technical publications department and was diagnosed

in July with a blood cancer called Myelodysplastic Syndrome. Several fundraising efforts were held, including selling “Team Stock” bracelets, holding raffles, splitting proceeds with local artisan Jean Koupel, working with Scentsy and Tupperware consultants who donated proceeds, and hosting a community

benefit at Rounding 3rd in downtown Yankton. More than 400 people attended the benefit, and were entertained by the band “Mrs. Begley and the Boys,” which donated its time for the event. “Because of all of the bills that piled up due to testing and treatments, we decided to try to help out Linda as much as we

Biofuel market calls for more grinding power at T idewater Green by Jon M. Casey

Tidewater Green's Rotochopper B66 tracked grinder turns construction debris into ground biofuel with ease. Photo provided by Tidewater Green With the demand for biofuel expected to double between 2009 and 2015, it comes as no surprise that regional recycling facilities such as Chesapeake Virginia’s Tidewater Green, have experienced continual growth. Since they began as a shingle recycling business in 2010, it did not take long for Andy Warren, president of Tidewater Green, to see that the wood waste recycling segment of the business was growing at a faster pace than his RAS business was. More importantly, as he realized that there was an immediate outlet for these materials as biofuels for co-gen boiler steam production at power plants and other facilities equipped to burn wood based biofuels, he needed additional sources of supply for the raw materials as well. “At first, we were recycling tear off shingles, as a way of diverting them from local landfills and as a way to help reduce the cost of petroleum based

asphalt mix ingredients for the paving industry,” said Warren. “What we quickly found was that when roofers pulled off the roofing material, a lot of times, they needed to make repairs to the wooden structures underneath. That made for mixed loads of C&D material. So, we began taking that in as well and sorting it. We ground that wood waste as boiler fuel.” Vincent Coffield, a material hauler and regular customer of Andy’s, is a good example of this recycling growth. “I haul discarded roofing material into Tidewater Green from the City of Chesapeake, Virginia Beach and the surrounding counties,” he said. “It wasn’t too long after they opened up, that I began to bring my material here. I used to take it to another recycler in the area, but here, they get me in and out quickly and I find that I have far fewer flat tires!” Warren said that he appreciates customers like

It’s because of customers like Coffield, that Tidewater Green’s growth has been ongoing. Since the business opened, Tidewater Green has experienced almost equal growth in wood and shingles alike. When they first started recycling their wood, they would call in a contract grinding company to grind what they had on hand. In 2011 however, Warren could see that it was time for Tidewater Green to consider purchasing its own grinder. That was when they acquired a new Rotochopper® MP 2 grinder. (See Waste Handling Equipment News, July 2011 issue Pg. 3.) A year and one half later, much has changed. “We secured an ongoing source of wood waste from area businesses that service the marine industry here in the Virginia Tidewater region,” said Warren. “We are situated in an excellent location to receive old pier pilings and wood waste from construction work taking place at nearby docks and piers. We receive much of it by barge. With those larger materials coming into our facility, we found that we needed a more powerful grinder, one that could take entire pilings and grind them up into a 2-inch minus product. That is

when we upgraded to our Rotochopper B66 tracked unit. It makes short work of those pilings.” Warren explained that because he still has the need for a high speed grinder to process the roofing shingles, the Rotochopper is an ideal dual purpose machine. The tracked B66 is perfect. “We currently receive between 10 and 15 loads of tear off asphalt shingles per day,” he said. “We’ve received as many as 29 in one day, but that is at the peak of the roofing season. We found that the tear off shingles and the wood waste that accompanies that, provided the best raw material for our end users,” he said. “We also found that with the biofuel market, wood waste has a far greater potential, especially when it comes to creosote treated wood and lumber like the pilings.” Warren said that he likes to keep a two week stockpile of ground biofuel on hand so he can meet his customer’s needs. Currently, that amounts to approximately 200 tons per week. Because Tidewater Green now has a grinder with the ability to produce that much material in just a day or two, that gives them more flexibility making for a smoother production schedule. He said that when possible, they double grind their wood waste. “When our Komptech Crambo 5000 is available for us to use here, we initially grind the construction wood debris with that machine to reduce the material in size and to remove most of the unwanted nails and metal that comes along with it,” he said. “A slow speed shredder like the Crambo works well for that. We have had that unit from the start. There are times when we have it contracted out on jobsites but when it’s here it’s being used.” “From there, when the stockpile is large enough to grind, we move the Rotochopper over to the material and grind it again to a smaller, desired size. At that point, the material goes out as a mulch product, or as biofuel. When we are not grinding wood, we can move the Rotochopper to the shingle pile and grind the shingles into RAS.” “At other times, we can move it over to our marine piling stockpile and grind those into biofuel as well. It just depends on what we need,” he said. “It’s for that reason that we went with the tracked unit. I just made sense. It is so much easier to move a unit on tracks that we could see that this was the ideal choice. The wheeled unit was nice, but we outgrew that one very quickly.” Warren noted that they still do not have a market for the salt treated lumber, those with the heavy

As part of a two step process, Tidewater Green runs raw wood debris through their Komptech Crambo 5000 to shred the material and to remove unwanted metal. The shredded wood is then run through the Rotochopper for a final grinding. metal components. With the potential for Arsenic and Lead to remain in the ashes from burning wood treated with that kind of waterproofing, there is still the toxic element that makes that wood unmarketable. “We will find a market for that one day,” he said confidently. Andy said that with the increase in business, he has also needed to add a couple of employees to meet the workload. He said that it was especially gratifying to be able to do that during times when other industries are not as fortunate. “We have come a long way from the time that my partner, Dickie Cameron, a former police officer for the Virginia Beach Police Department and I got together,” said Andy. Back then, he owned a dumpster rental company, and he was looking to open a transfer station. Since then, we have evolved into one of the area’s leading resources for wood and shingle waste.” For more information on Tidewater Green, give them a call at 757-487-4736 or visit their website at www.tidewatergreen.com.

Andy Warren explains how the Rotochopper's dolly system for the tracked B66 grinder, makes moving the unit from one site to another, an easy job.

Andy says that it is amazing to see how many nails the Rotochopper's onboard magnet removes when grinding shingles.

This pile of marine pilings will eventually be turned into mulch like the pile that is seen in the distance.

by Jon M. Casey For most of the workers who rely upon a portable brush chipper as an integral part of their daily tree care business, having an opportunity to see how those chippers are manufactured is an experience that they are not able to enjoy unless it is by seeing a documentary on television or in a YouTube video. This year however, attendees to the TCI Expo in Baltimore, had the opportunity to get a closer look at how Morbark brush chippers are assembled in a

hands-on exhibit of how the assembly line at Morbark is laid out and how the machine goes from being a number of specially fabricated parts to become a high quality brush chipper, on its way to an eager customer. “We wanted this part of our exhibit to be laid out exactly like it is in our plant in Michigan,” said Jim McDaniel who oversees chipper assembly for Morbark. “We wanted to give people who are not able to visit our plant, the opportunity to see how the assemblies come together

to form a chipper like the one they might be using every day on the job.” While the layout was much smaller in size than what a visitor might see at the plant, the stages of assembly from the chipper drum with its cutter blades to the housing and mounting on the chipper base were laid out in three separate stages for clear understanding of the process. Since several of the raw steel fabrication steps and the welding of those components

Chipper 14 Jim McDaniel was excited about the “Assembly Line” portion of the Morbark exhibit.

Larry Wiggins (beyond units facing camera), helped visitors learn more about how Morbark Chippers are built.

With the chipper subassemblies including the blower fan, chipper housing, chipper base, infeed, yoke assembly and discharge chute in place on the frame, this unit is ready to receive its engine and head off to be painted. Custom colors like the Ravens Football Team purple seen on the unit behind this demo unit are available upon request.

Details down to how the tools are stored and how the parts arrive at the assembly station were an important part of the display. would not be practical for a display of this kind, nevertheless, visitors could clearly see the progression of the components from basic parts to a subassembly ready for a motor, shields, guards, a fuel tank and paint. Additionally, McDaniel, a Morbark veteran with 24 years of service, said that they wanted to include the tools, instructions and delivery destinations

for some of the “kits” that make up a chipper, so that the visitors could get a feel for the “lean” manufacturing guidelines that Morbark strives to perfect as they build the chippers in their Winn, MI plant. “All of the equipment is Start date driven, on the production schedule,” said McDaniel. “This set up is just like it is in our shop!”

Sandvik has released the advanced electric dump valve system which is the quickest tramp iron protection system of any cone crusher available on the market. With an astonishing sampling rate of

200 times per second of the hydraulic pressure, this state of the art control and hydraulic system reacts instantly to uncrushable objects, such as tramp iron, drill bits, mill balls, excavator teeth, pieces of

steel or severe packing of fine material in the crushing chamber. The design of the Sandvik Hydroset™ system coupled with the electric dump valve system allows for the quick detection and reaction

to uncrushable objects thus decreasing the risk of internal damage to the crusher. Customer benefits include: 1. Quickest tramp iron protection system of any cone crusher available

on the market which reduces exposure to damaging pressure peaks by over 90 percent. 2. Output signal from the PLC control system notifies the operator that the crushing chamber is opening. tomers can take corrective actions to remove the unwanted object from their process. 3. The external dump valve is located on the side of the crusher supporting increased safety and easier access during maintenance. “Customers who have already installed the electric dump valve have seen significant improvements in the protection efficiency. The service life of structural components, bearings and liners has increased significantly due to the reduced exposure to pressure peaks,” says Andreas Christoffersson, product specialist, Mining cone crushers. “Judging by customer feedback and firm orders already received, we see that the electric dump valve clearly provides value to our customers and gives them peace of mind,” adds Christoffersson. Factory installed electric dump valve kits are available for the CH870, CH890 and CH895 models. A retrofit kit is available for crushers already installed in the field covering the H7800, CH870, H8000, H8000i, H8800 and CH880 models. Talbert’s new 40 ton built with superload limits in mind RENSSELAER, IN — Talbert Manufacturing, a leader in the heavy haul and specially built trailer industry, introduces its 40 ton lightweight trailer. The trailer can be customized for customers who need to remain below the superload weight limit in states with 120,000-pound gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) restrictions. Each state has separate laws surrounding superloads. Generally, once a truck reaches superload status, route surveys and engineering reviews are required on roads and bridges to ensure the superload can travel the desired route without causing a hazard. Even after the permit is issued, there are further restrictions regarding when the load can move, usually on weekdays during daylight hours. Further, a permit is commonly valid for one trip only. Given these rules, the need for escorts and the cost of permits, most operators strive to stay below superload level for all the states through which a load will travel. The 40 ton lightweight trailer can be designed for the transport of excavators, small to mid-sized dozers and other construction equipment, and it weighs just over 18,000-pounds. When paired with a truck, the unit can transport equipment at full capacity — up to 80,000-pounds — while remaining under the 120,000-pound superload limit. To best accommodate the height of an excavator, Talbert can customize the trailer with a 22-inch deck height and a deck boom well. This six-foot long recessed portion in the rear of the trailer is roughly sixinches deep and plated

for the bucket of an excavator. This lowers the overall height of the boom to ensure the load is a legal height. The three axle, 26-foot trailer features a four beam deck design and auxiliary crossmembers for extra floor support. Talbert manufactures the trailers using 16-inch beams, consisting of T-1 flanges and 80K webs, to reduce empty weight and achieve the target trailer weight and deck height. The trailer can also be built with Walther EMC Dura-Light Hubs® as a lightweight hub solution and CentriFuse® brake drums, which are the lightest drums on the market. The trailer’s aluminum wheels also help keep the weight low. The 40 ton lightweight trailer also features a new ratchet neck design. This design eliminates the need for changing adjustment blocks and enables the operator to adjust the ride height of a trailer from one side of the trailer. Customers can choose whether to incorporate Talbert’s 75th anniversary package. This package includes stainless steel gooseneck inserts, stainless steel mudflap brackets with a “Talbert” cutout, powder coated outriggers, 75th anniversary decals and conspicuity tape, apitong decking coated with linseed oil and a custom placard decal. Founded in 1938, Talbert Manufacturing provides the most complete line of heavy haul trailers and specialized transportation equipment for the commercial, industrial, military and government sectors; and in applications that include renewable energy, aerospace, heavy construction, in-plant material handling, manufacturing and processing systems

and much more. For more information, contact Talbert Manufacturing, 1628 W. State Rd. 114, Rensselaer, IN 47978. Call 800-3485232, fax 219-866-7060, e-mail sales@ talbertmfg.com or visit the website at www.talbertmfg.com.

New data management tool answers specific demands for speed and convenience SHELTON, CT — OEM Data Delivery, a leading developer of data management systems for users of high value (and remote) equipment, has introduced a new addition to its RFID line of robust Service Trackers. The new product, the ST 570-HZ, is a powered active RFID tracking device that wirelessly identifies individual equipment, allowing worksite managers to track the location and activity of all capital assets, automatically. The ST-570-HZ works seamlessly with any OEM GoPod data capture hub to record machine transactions of all types; for example, vehicle identification and the distribution of fuel and other service consumables. It also generates data that is critical for inventory allocation and management, and for maintenance and repair scheduling. Finally, it is one of the most powerful and versatile tools available for estimating job costs, and tracking those costs as they are incurred. The ST -570-HZ also incorporates two unique, new features that many customers said would be “most valuable” — the freedom from battery change outs, and true, “drive-by” data capture convenience. The ST 570-HZ is a powered RFID device that draws

its energy from the individual machine it interfaces with (bulldozer or loader, etc.) so it’s battery free. “Drive by” data capture means the ST 570-HZ automatically identifies itself to nearby superintendent, fuel and/or service vehicles equipped with any type of GoPOD System. Like the original OEM “Cube,” the ST -570-HZ was engineered as part of the Service Tracker and GoPOD system, to manage an entire fleet of construction, mining, rental or other equipment without ever interrupting normal equipment operation. It is fully scalable and compatible with all equipment brands and models. The ST-570-HZ was engineered for rugged, extended, outdoor service, and has a working range of -40 degrees C. to +70 degrees C. It is sealed and tested for dust and water resistance to IP67. The ST-570-HZ has 8k of program memory, and LED communications diagnostics. Information from the ST-570-HZ is immediately available; data uploads into any major back office system and integrates seamlessly with accounting software. Reports are generated nightly and delivered via e-mail and secure web reports. It is covered by a comprehensive two year warranty. Installation of ST-570-HZ units averages just 15 min-

Raw sewage storage is something all municipalities must handle in order to keep local water sources safe. In Illinois, the Northern Moraine Wastewater Reclamation District is responsible for serving three communities in the Island Lake area with a total population of about 12,000 people. To dispose of the sewage, this facility must process it so that it can eventually be discharged into a nearby river. Northern Moraine WRD treats approximately 1.1 million gallons of water per day.

The facility had been storing treated and dried biosolids, or sewage sludge, outside for a long period of time. Operations Supervisor Todd Sheridan explains, “The material got wet every time it rained or snowed, causing odor concerns and raising disposal costs.” Sheridan knew the facility needed covered storage space for the sludge beds and began researching his options. Northern Moraine WRD receives catalogs regularly from one of ClearSpan’s affiliate companies and Sheridan dis-

covered Hercules Truss Arch Buildings inside one of his copies. He says, “The price of ClearSpan Fabric Structures and the company’s great customer service were both selling points. Other companies with similar products were very unresponsive.” Sheridan decided on two 65-foot wide by 70-foot long Hercules Truss Arch Buildings to cover the sludge beds. Sheridan is very pleased with the buildings, noting that they are “working out wonderfully!” He is happy with the

affordable price and the construction timeline. “They were assembled in less than a week.” He adds, “The light that comes through the covers is great.” Currently, both structures are storing sewage sludge, but Sheridan says, “I’m sure we will find even more uses for the buildings down the road.” For more information, visit www.ClearSpan.com/ADWHEN or call 866-643-1010 to speak with one of our ClearSpan specialists.

Doosan DXB260H breaker allows operators to match breaker frequency to ground conditions WEST FARGO, ND — The Doosan DXB260H hydraulic breaker features two speed control of breaker frequency for improved efficiency in demanding demolition and rock breaking applications. Delivering up to 600 blows per minute, the 5,400-pound DXB260H is designed for use with excavators in the 27 to 37 metric ton weight range, specifically the Doosan DX300LC and DX350LC. Rated in the 8,000-foot-pound impact energy class, the DXB260H requires a hydraulic flow rate of between 39.5 and 63.5 gallons per minute. With two speeds, the DXB260H breaker frequency can be easily adjust-

ed between short and long stroke settings. This allows the operator to match the breaker frequency to the ground conditions for optimized productivity. Standard features include a cradle mounted grease station and blank fire protection. The cradle mounted grease station delivers continuous grease flow, reducing bushing and tool wear while minimizing maintenance costs and downtime. Blank fire protection uses a cushion of oil at the base of the cylinder to reduce metal to metal contact. The breaker’s suspension system extends excavator workgroup life by absorbing harmful vibrations and stress

waves. Also, a patented main valve design reduces hydraulic pressure peaks that can reduce pump life, crack excavator workgroup welds and cause system overheating. Finally, an energy recovery system on the DXB260H increases strike power by using energy generated by piston rebound. The DXB260H breaker comes with a mounting cap, auxiliary hydraulic hoses, cradle mounted greaser, two moil points, toolbox and a nitrogen checking device. A one year warranty is standard. In addition to the general purpose moil, tools available for the DXB260H include a blunt tool, a chisel and a py-

ramidal or “nail” tool. Refinements to Vermeer’ s WC2300XL whole tree chipper make it a winner by Jon M. Casey

Vermeer dealer representatives and shoppers had an extensive walk around of the WC2300XL with Brad Van Rheenen. For visitors who were looking for the latest technology in whole tree chippers at the 2012 WHEN Recycling Expo North, in suburban Rochester, NY

This “before and after” comparison of the infeed areas on the original (top) and improved (bottom) versions of the WC2300XL, shows how the new design will benefit the chipper's owner.

October 24-25, Brad Van Rheenen, Vermeer Environmental solutions specialist, had the ideal answer in the WC2300XL. Introduced in late 2010/early 2011, the WC2300XL was developed primarily for the biofuels industry to satisfy the growing need for a powerful, yet portable whole tree chipper to take into a forest. Since its appearance, the WC2300XL has undergone several refinements to enhance its capabilities and to make it one of the easiest to use and easiest to service chippers on the market. According to Brad, design engineers listened attentively as users of the chipper, shared their early experiences while using the new machine in varying applications. Responding to what they were hearing, the design team went to work to increase the size of the feed intake opening and at the same time, they modified the shape of the infeed area to accommodate “slashy material and tree tops as they enter the chipper. The results have been excellent,” he said. “We doubled the feed roller torque by increasing the diameter of the drum from 19 to 28-inches,” he said. A closer look at the intake and deck area confirmed it. “This chipper can now take in logs up to 23-inches in diameter.” “The increase in the drum size brought the drum closer to the feed chains which make for a more uniform intake of material. The chipper also is equipped with our Ecoidle™ Engine Control System. When that function is selected, the engine speed automatically lowers to 1400 rpm after 30 seconds of inactivity. That helps reduce fuel consumption when not chipping wood.” Taking a walk around the chipper, Brad explained that in conjunction with the new intake design, the “SmartCrush” control system monitors the position of the larger infeed roller. The down pressure remains off until the chains have pulled the material into position and the feed roller has climbed up on the material. It is at this time that the pressure increases to crush the material with large limbs or forks, to bring it securely into the chipper. In this way, the

grapple operator who is feeding the chipper can release the grapple and go on his way to get the next load of material. Brad noted that the six degree slope of the infeed table was designed to lower the “breakover” point where long material first comes in contact with the machine. Longer material can flow smoothly into the chipper, reducing the chance for the tree canopy or limbs to snag on the rear of the machine. While we were at the rear of the unit, Brad pointed out the design of the individually tensioned chains that helps accommodate uneven chain wear. “This helps prolong the life of the chains and the owner only needs to replace the chain that has the most wear. Both chains do not need to be replaced at the same time, since the tension on each chain can be individually adjusted.” “The WC2300XL is available in either the Tier III or Tier 4i (Stage IIIB) 440hp CAT engine option,” he said. “That gives owners the option of choosing the engine package that meets their local governmental requirements.” An interesting feature of the newer design is the replaceable wear parts aspect of the new unit. The high wear, material flow areas all are built with replaceable wear parts. The drum, discharge chute and infeed conveyor chains are all good examples. Pointing to a series of holes designed into the top of the discharge chute, Brad explained how the operator is able to tell when the discharge chute’s inner liner is in need of replacement. “The material will begin to blow out of one of those holes, and at that time, the operator can see that the chute liner has worn through and is in need of replacement.” Brad said the chipper is outfitted with a built-in skidder grab on the tongue. This allows a skid steer loader operator or an excavator operator to move the unit without the need of a truck. The grab point has a park/brake release system that allows the operator to move the unit without reattaching a tow vehicle. Equally important is the chipper’s remote control

feature, which allows one person to operate and load the machine from the loader’s cab. The remote control system also provides real time performance data on the chipper, which allows the operator to make ongoing adjustments on the WC2300XL without leaving the loader. For more information on the Vermeer WC2300XL Whole Tree Chipper, visit the Vermeer website at www.vermeer.com.

Brad Van Rheenen (center facing camera) talks about the slope of the infeed deck on Vermeer's WC2300XL.

Individually adjustable tail pulleys gives owners longer chain life between chain replacement.

Brad Van Rheenen, solutions specialist for Vermeer's Environmental Group, knows this chipper inside and out!

Holes drilled at regular intervals along the discharge chute are an innovative way to know when the inner liner of the chute needs to be replaced. When material starts blowing out any of these holes, it's time to replace the liner!
