The University of Leeds Human Rights Journal is a multidisciplinary publication created by students with the aim of providing a platform for ambitious undergraduates to publish their academic and creative work on the theme of human rights. It was founded in 2012 and is the first journal of its kind in the UK.
This year, the ‘In Focus’ theme is sanctuary. The idea behind this theme is to explore how marginalised communities can achieve sanctuary on this planet. Importantly, we wanted writers to interrogate the concept of the ‘human’ in human rights discourse by focusing on the environment, other species and groups often depicted as less-than-human.
Volume X of the Leeds Human Rights Journal aims to provide a refreshing and critical look at global and human rights issues relating to sanctuary, and includes the work of creatives to further comment on human rights and to illuminate advocacy.
