a message from the HEAD OF SCHOOL

It’s hard to believe it’s been five years since my family and I joined the Lee-Scott Academy family to serve as Head of School. So much has happened on our campus and in the lives of our students and families during that time – yes, even surviving a pandemic!

We open the doors this fall celebrating 40 years of Lee-Scott Academy! In 1981, two independent schools, Lee Academy of Auburn and Scott Preparatory School of Opelika, merged to become Lee-Scott Academy. The strong traditions of academic excellence and emphasis on Christian values of both schools continue as the hallmarks of LSA. While the school’s location, curriculum, facilities, and faculty have changed considerably since 1981, the consistency and permeance of the LSA mission is one of the essential qualities that parents have always valued most about LSA. This year, as we commemorate the 40th anniversary of Lee-Scott Academy, we honor our history and look forward to an even brighter future. We will rely on the continued generosity of those who believe in the enduring mission and values of Lee-Scott Academy.

Many thanks to each of you for being part of the LSA story. Your generous giving, year after year, allows us to do things that otherwise would not be possible.

Your gifts allowed us the flexibility to respond to the changing needs of our school, our students, our teachers and our families. LOWER SCHOOL

a message from the LOWER SCHOOL PRINCIPAL

Much of our students' success involves the engagement and dedication of parents and caregivers who have always played an important role in their child’s education here. Their role became paramount during this school year, and we are grateful for the partnerships with our faculty to provide a normal year amidst Covid-19 for our students. Thank you!

I wanted to take a moment and share with you highlights from the 2020-2021 school year and updates for the year to come:

•

• We implemented our new math curriculum in the second half of the school year to ensure we met new standards. We look forward to starting the year with this new, rigorous program!

• We had our first Easter Program to celebrate the season, using biblical hymns and telling of the resurrection of Christ! Multiple programs allowed all students PreK-6th grade to participate.

• Our students in PreK-6th grade were given 1:1 access to ipads in an effort to educate during COVID and follow safety protocols.

• The media center is in the next phase of updates to provide more seating, additional resources, more technology with smartboard access, and a new flow for our lower school students.

• We continued our on-going professional development and data meetings for teachers using Professional Learning Communities and vertical teams, all helping to better individualize for student needs.

• We hosted several camps for our students this summer that included Imaginarium Camp (Science & Math), art , soccer, baseball, basketball and football camps.

• Summer maintenance included carpets cleaned, floors waxed, several air conditioner units replaced, fresh paint in several areas and preparing for a new theme centered around Joshua 1:9 to start the year ahead!

• We were determined to continue some of the traditions that we have even through COVID and revisions to meet safety guidelines. Meet the Teacher, parent conferences, Curriculum

Nights were all pulled off with options for virtual experiences. We maintained Chapel (rotating attendance and having virtual option for all students), Mother Goose Parade, birthday celebrations with PTO treats at recess, virtual programs - Christmas, Easter, Engineering Night, Veterans’ Day and Awards’ Day, book fairs, Living Nativity, Mother’s Day Event and All Pro Dads.

We continued activities and events to help our community at large - Toy Drive, Canned Food Drive, collections for local assisted living, First Responders Breakfast (Drive through) We partnered with the US for events celebrating school spirit, Be Kind Week and Christmas donations.

Many of our grade levels maintained their special events for students in a revised format, pulling off everything from Easter egg hunts, adapted rotations, centers and small groups.

We started a new Equestrian Club and look forward to adding to the club options in the LS for 2021-22!

UPPER SCHOOL

a message from the UPPER SCHOOL PRINCIPAL What an exciting time to be a part of the Upper School at Lee-Scott Academy! I want to say a special thank you to our faculty and parents who partnered together with us last school year as we navigated through the Covid-19 pandemic with middle and high school students. As always, our teachers and students showed resilience throughout the year in handling the challenges that the necessary precautions presented.

Let me share with you some updates and highlights from the 2020-2021 school year: • We welcomed our newest Warriors with our 7th Grade SuperHero camp. During orientation, students had an opportunity to meet teachers, talk with Ambassadors and explore the Upper School building as they prepare for a new and exciting school year.

• We added Anatomy and Physiology and AP Biology classes to our science curriculum this year. With the addition of AP Biology, LSA now offers six AP courses on campus. We offer on campus dual enrollment opportunities for math in PreCalculus and Calculus I, II and experienced our highest enrollment numbers ever in these classes last year. Many of our students are also now taking advantage of many other dual enrollment opportunities provided by other universities.

• Elective courses that will be new additions this year include: Film and Fiction, 3DArt and Design, Leadership, Communication and Media, and Speech and Debate.

• We are looking for interested grandparents to join us this year! We have a number of ideas to share but are looking for grandparents to partner with our College and Career Counseling Office to create a Career Panel to help guide our students by answering questions related to their career interests. Our grandparents have a wealth of information that they can offer to help guide our students as they begin the process of selecting a career post high school. How valuable their experiences will be to our students! We are looking forward to involving them in the Upper School this year.

• We are looking forward to expanding our club offerings to the students in all grades but with an emphasis in grades 7-8. It’s essential that students have opportunities to feel connected to their school and to each other.

Developing skills that foster the building of appropriate relationships are necessary “soft skills” that equip students for life long success.

• We continue to expand our small group weekly devotionals with our Student Ministry Team. This remarkable group of students is growing in the number volunteering to lead a weekly small group. Student 6

leaders are focused on being a more integral part of the monthly Chapel services bringing both campuses together in worship.

Summer maintenance updates include the replacement of five HVAC units and classrooms got a much needed fresh coat of paint to start the new year.

Speakers have been installed in all Upper School classrooms. There will be a very noticeable difference in sound quality throughout the building.

We have purchased additional modular furniture to add to our existing furniture located in the hallways for student use.

The media center is being renovated to include a study space equipped for our middle and high school students.

This new design will include pull apart collaborative furniture that facilitates small group work and meeting space. We are very excited about the modernization of our media center that will also allow the re-opening of the coffee bar! Students will once again be able to begin their day with a cup of hot or cold coffee. This has become a favorite meeting spot for high school students.

Teachers continue to work and learn together in meaningful professional development opportunities.

Their focus is always to work together for the success of all students. We are committed to doing the right thing for students and to create an environment of collaboration between parents and teachers.

Our faculty received new MacBook Pros to get the school year started off right! A refresh on devices will enable teachers to be efficient in planning and providing instruction. Through the many lessons we learned through COVID-19 last year, we understand how essential effective and meaningful technology can be when integrated effectively in classroom instruction.

FINANCIALS

a message from the CHIEF FINANCE AND OPERATIONS OFFICER This is such an exciting time to be part of Lee-Scott Academy.

We continue to focus on ensuring that the operational side of Lee-Scott provides an environment where are students are protected, nurtured, and challenged. We are so very grateful for the generosity of the Lee-Scott families that have allowed us to maintain and upgrade our campus.

The bullets below share the highlights of upgrades around campus over the last year.

• In the summer of 2021, we repaired the infield track. The prior topsoil depth was too shallow resulting in a hard rocky soil that was unsafe. We were able to add adequate topsoil and replant the grass to provide a safe playing surface which is used as our PE outdoor classroom, our soccer field and our football practice field. As part of the rebuilding, we are installing a throwing pit for track.

• Lights will be added around the perimeter of the track.

Lighting will allow for use of the field for late afternoon and night events. We hope to have the lights up and functional by the first home soccer game in spring 2022.

• In the fall of 2021, we significantly upgraded the sound system in the cafeteria. We were able to use the new sound system for the theatre performance during this past Christmas season.

• Over the last two years we have repainted classrooms in all buildings.

• We replaced countertops in the bathrooms near the gym and in the lower school bathrooms.

• We replaced the cabinets on the back wall of the cafeteria.

• We are in the process of upgrading the air conditioner units. The units in the classroom are original to the building and were beginning to fail and causing significant upkeep and repair costs. We contracted the last two years to replace 10 units per year. We anticipate completing the project in the summer of 2023. In addition to the classroom units, we have replaced the bigger units that service the gymnasium.

• Over the last three years we have added control access to all buildings. Now all doors require a fob scan rather than a key to enter the building. This allows us to know who enters our buildings at all times. In addition, we have digital control of all doors. The system is tied to our intercom system Anytime an intruder drill is triggered through the intercom, all exterior doors are locked to prevent unwanted entry.

• Unfortunately, our fire and intercom systems were hit by lightning in the spring of 2021. We replaced the intercom system over the summer and did extensive repairs to the fire system. We have the ability to decide which areas of the school (including classrooms) can here announcements or bells. This is a huge advantage during testing. We can designate classrooms as testing sites and

prevent the bell and intercom from interrupting those sites while allowing the rest of the school to function as normal.

We replaced the bleachers in the gym during the fall of 2021. The bleachers are controlled by motors. We incurred significant costs to replace and maintain the motors.

We are excited for the look of the new bleachers that include banners on the ends to hide the underbelly of the bleachers.

After many years partnering with Lexington Foods (formerly Valley Foods), in the fall of 2021 we began a new cafeteria service contract with Long Pine Hospitality. Long Pine is owned by John Corbin and Kerry McGinnis. John’s daughter attends LSA. Long Pine has provided cafeteria service for Southern Union.

We significantly upgraded the library over the last year.

We dedicated an area for upper school students which includes a coffee bar. We added a smart board and created a section of the library for small group research and for team collaboration that includes soft seating and a smart board. In order to section off this area while still allowing use of the full library, we added retractable glass doors.

The doors can also serve as a working area for students to use dry erase markers and brainstorm or work problems collaboratively on the glass doors.

We enclosed the baseball/softball batting cage area in the summer of 2021. This allows full year use of the batting cages.

We added numerous benches around campus to encourage outside seating.

We began a partnership with Auburn Grounds to provide lawn maintenance service for the school grounds. Athletic fields continue to be maintained by CRA. We partnered with Campus Pay to offer online payment options for our families. For years we have offered the option to pay tuition online through Diamond Mind. But, only in the last year did we expand the option to include other areas.

I love being a part of the LeeScott family and serving on the amazing team that strives every day to offer an educational environment that encourages all students to be successful.

a message from the DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT Year after year, Lee-Scott Academy counts on gifts from parents, grandparents, alumni, and friends of the LSA community in order to continue to fulfill the mission established by its founding families and to continue to provide a college-preparatory education to LSA students. This year, our community went above and beyond and answered the call for support exceeding the Lee-Scott Fund goal by over $200,000 in gifts to support our faculty, students, and programs.

With your support, LSA not only exceeded our Lee-Scott Fund goal but has successfully entered into a capital campaign raising more than $2.9 million to date in gifts and pledges that will impact tomorrow students today. Through Impacting Tomorrow Today, we will be blessed with the opportunity to continue to live our mission and prepare our students for these next steps in life by updating and expanding our facilities; investing in our people through faculty excellence fund; and financially securing the future of LSA. LSA is committed to preparing our students for college, life and eternity. ADMISSIONS

a message from the DIRECTOR OF ADMISSIONS What an exciting year it has been in the Office of Admissions! For the 2021-2022 school year, Lee-Scott Academy welcomed 129 new students. Families from Washington, Maryland, Texas, Georgia and South Carolina decided to make their home in Alabama and chose LeeScott Academy for their children’s education. Not only did Lee-Scott have new students from other states, many from surrounding areas such as Auburn, Opelika, Beauregard, Alex City and Montgomery joined us as well. These new students added to our Lee-Scott family to bring our total enrollment for the 2021-2022 school year to 737 students.

This increased enrollment by 6.8% from the previous year.

How wonderful that our LSA family is growing!

For these prospective families, the Office of Admissions is the first point of contact. As Director of Admissions, my purpose is to introduce these families to Lee-Scott Academy and share with them the mission or our wonderful school.

Lee-Scott Academy is a college preparatory school offering a quality education in an environment where students are protected, nurtured, and challenged with biblical, Christ-centered principles that promote the development of the total person.

The pursuit of excellence in academics is the hallmark of the Academy, complemented by opportunities to participate in programs that encourage student success.

The Office of Admissions has many events and activities throughout the school year. Below highlights a few of those: • Family Tours- Prospective families are encouraged to come tour our school. These tours last approximately 1 hour and include touring the Upper and Lower School Buildings, Activities building and Media Center.

During the tour, every aspect of Lee-Scott Academy is covered- academics, athletics, arts, enrichments, spiritual emphasis and clubs and organizations. Also, the application process is communicated with the prospective parents.

• PreK and Kindergarten Admissions Events- In the fall, the Office of Admissions will host two events specifically for PreK and Kindergarten. This event will give the prospective parents an opportunity to meet our administration and teachers for those grades. The teachers will discuss curriculum, the students’ daily schedule and assessment for admissions. The event will end with information about the application process and tours of the Lower School. A special gift is sent home to the prospective student.

• New Family Orientation- In August before the first day of school, new families will be invited to attend a new family orientation where they will learn all things about Lee-Scott including the mission statement, the schoolwide theme and bible verse for the year, the arrival and dismissal procedures, how to set up an account with the cafeteria services, the Upper and Lower School dress codes, the Upper and Lower School handbooks, how to submit tuition payments, how to setup PowerSchool, when the device distribution will happen for their students, how to become involved in the PTO, as well as, the dates for all the beginning of the year curriculum and meet the teacher events for both the Upper and Lower School.

• New Family Tailgate- This event coincides with the first Varsity football game. New families will be invited to a tailgate before the game. Dinner will be provided.

Shakers and other spirit gifts are given to the new families. This event helps foster relationships between new families and also with our administrators who attend the event.

• Realtor Open House- This is a new event for the Office of Admissions. Area realtors will be invited to our campus during December to receive information about Lee-Scott Academy and tour the school. Realtors are normally the first people that new families will meet when moving to an area. The Office of Admissions would like to provide materials to the realtors that they can pass along to new families in the area to introduce them to Lee-Scott Academy.

• Community Open House- This event is held in January during the time that registration opens for the next school year. This evening event gives families that opportunity to come and bring their children after work and after school hours to tour our school. The LeeScott Ambassadors welcome and tour the prospective families and students. All that attend are followed up by the Office of Admissions to help guide them through the application process.

TECHNOLOGY

a message from the DIRECTOR OF TECHNOLOGY

Students and educators worldwide faced a mountain of challenges in the 2020-2021 school year. The determination of our teachers and the commitment from our students and families is what allowed us to be successful and I am so thankful for that. Effective use of technology enabled us to connect digitally and engage students when we could not be together physically.

Our students and teachers rose to meet the challenges presented to them.

Successful use of technology was a major player in our success last year. In my role as Technology Director, I am proud to share some of the achievements of the 2020 - 2021 school year and give you some insight into the goals of our department for the 2021 - 2022 school year.

In 2020 - 2021, LSA • Upgraded our internet bandwidth capacity to 1GB (4x higher) for greater throughput during the time when students were having to connect from their home.

• Outfitted each of our data closets with new UPS equipment to minimize the downtime during a power failure or brownout.

• Brought our CCTV security cameras inhouse. They are now managed by the IT Department and allows us to see repairs more quickly and save costs associated for LSA. • Added 6 security cameras to our system.

• Upgraded networking equipment throughout the school. These upgrades created a cost savings using a new vendor and allowed us to gain more functionality and layers in regards to security.

• Implemented an encrypted and unattended offsite backup for mission critical data to ensure that we would have access to it in case of a disaster.

• Developed and implemented a device refresh schedule to ensure that equipment is updated and usable by faculty and staff. This will ensure that our stakeholders have the best equipment we can offer.

• Partnered with several vendors to ensure that events held on campus were able to be streamed so that family members were able to be part of their child’s events. This helped us make last year as normal as possible.

• Upgraded the cafetorium’s AV system and production sound board to a new state-of-the-art digital board.

This upgrade contains a new “Meeting” and “Theatre” mode in that space to improve its ease of use.

In 2021 - 2022, we plan to build on the foundation above and • Outfit our faculty with new MacBook Pros as part of our device refresh.

• Install Wi-Fi 6 access points in every classroom and instructional space.

• Assess several single sign-on services to streamline the use of our digital curriculum and make the process easier for our students and teachers.

• Continue to provide support throughout the school week to our faculty, staff, and students.

In addition, we have added a new member to our IT team that is on-site five days a week to provide additional support to our faculty and students.

a message from the DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS Dear Warrior Fans, The athletic department had a banner year in 2020-2021 despite the challenges faced because of COVID-19 and its impact on our student-athletes and program. The Dr. Don Roberts Track and Field facility was resodded and the bleachers in Samford Gymnasium have been removed and new bleachers installed. The hitting facility for our baseball and softball teams was enclosed earlier this year providing an indoor space for these groups. These three capital projects will enhance these athletic facilities providing better practice and game day experiences for our student-athletes and fans. It is an exciting time to be a Warrior!

supporting the FINE ARTS At Lee-Scott Academy, we believe the arts are an integral part of our mission to develop well-rounded students. Research over the past several decades supports the significance of fine arts education curriculum in encouraging the development of higher order thinking skills such as creativity, problem-solving, effective communication, self-discipline and critical thinking.

While COVID-19 affected many of the regular performances of our fine arts program, the department had an award-winning year in 2020-2021 and our artists, musicians, and performers adapted to the changes that had to be made.

Thank you to the parents, directors, administration, faculty, and staff for their continued support of our students and our program.

You have made us laugh often, lifted us with your smiles, shared your worries and hopes, and prayed for us and with us this year.

There is a song that is popular now with the lyric, “I see the evidence of your goodness all over my life. Why should I fear? The evidence is here.” The evidence of His faithfulness to this class is apparent to all that love them.

Dream your dreams. Write them down and pray about them. Don’t let anyone tell you that you cannot do it.

Have faith - always have faith. As you turn this page in your life now, it is time to put in the hard work to make your dreams happen.

Psalm 91:1 says, “He who dwells in the shelter of the most high will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty.

I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”

Find your shelter under His wings. He is faithful to His children.

The Nancy Plant McLeod Award is given in memory of Mrs. Nancy Plant McLeod, former lower school principal of Lee-Scott Academy. Mrs. McLeod was an accomplished musician and admired students who were devoted to the study of music. This honor is bestowed upon seniors who have attended Lee-Scott Academy from at least 4th grade through their senior year and who have excelled in music.
