Welcome from the Head of the School
DR. STAN COX
Dear Lee-Scott Academy Family,
In my time at Lee-Scott Academy, I have witnessed the dedication of our faculty and staff, the engagement of our students, the partnership of our parents, and the care of our alumni. As a school, we value everyone’s opinions, thoughts, and perspectives. We learn from one another and, while we may differ at times, I know that every member of the LSA community wants only the best for our school and for our students. For that, I am grateful.
In this issue of the Warrior Word, you will find stories that feature our Warriors in action. You will find stories about our ever-curious students, our supportive families, our devoted faculty and staff, and the generous donors who helped us grow and evolve as an educational institution. In this issue of the Warrior Word, you will find a reflection of our individual and collective commitment to the LSA community.
On the pages that follow, you will find stories that illustrate each of our core strengths - challenging academics, competitive athletics, nurturing atmosphere, boundless opportunities, and dedicated faculty and staff. These strengths are exemplified every day in the lives of our students.
As we look to the future, we hold fast to principles defined in our mission: to provide a quality education in an environment where students are protected, nurtured, and challenged with biblical, Christ-centered principles that promote the development of the total person, where the pursuit of excellence in academics is the hallmark of the Academy, and is complemented by opportunities to participate in programs that encourage student success.
Someday the students celebrated in this publication will be leaders in our world - either through their professional or personal pursuits. Generations to come will benefit from the efforts they make today; let us continue to be diligent in our commitment to the pursuit of excellence .
Sincerely,

Warrior Spirit
Warriors Athletics is increasingly becoming more and more of a pivotal point of involvement in our school. With it, has come the emergence of a school spirit never seen at LSA before!
Over the last few years, the LSA student section, affectionately dubbed “The Goat Pen,” has become a major factor in establishing a place for those loud and proud to be a Warrior whether home or away. At Jud Scott Field, students can be found in their reserved block at midfield cheering on the red & blue. Inside Samford Gymnasium, the Maddie McClendon Student Section is often filled with students doing everything they can to help their classmates to victory. The pride of being a Warrior emanates inside The Goat Pen at all LSA athletic events!
Spirit days have grown all the more popular at LSA. Whether it be the traditional wearing of camouflage while preparing to beat rival Glenwood or a full week of designated days during Homecoming Week, the commitment to being the loudest and proudest is at an all-time high for LSA students.
In 2022, the home football spirit schedule saw themes like “Rock the Rebels” where students were encouraged to wear patriotic gear before the season opener against Chambers Academy and “Cage the Cats” with jungle themes galore before taking on the Edgewood Academy Wildcats. Homecoming Week’s designated days had Movie Character Monday, Tropical Tuesday, Western Wednesday, Flat Day Thursday and Warrior Wear Friday.
Warrior Word 5
Spirit
Pep rallies feature students from 4th grade to senior students. One may think the Lower School students are timid or not as invested in Upper School students they do not know, but they are regularly the loudest and committed to letting the “big kids” know how much they want them to perform well.
Perhaps the biggest area where school spirit has grown, though, is in those outside of our school! Through various local vendors, LSA families have been able to purchase different spirit wear items for their entire family that they can be proud of wearing to LSA events and around town. LSA families are among the most committed to wanting to make the school better, in a variety of aspects. We’re thankful to so many who have been able to make that affection shown in a public way through new spirit wear options!
Warrior spirit reflects itself all across our school, not just through athletics, but at its core we see LSA students and families cheering on each other for the betterment of the red, white & blue. That’s something we can all get behind!
Hail Academy!

Groundbreaking Ceremony
Earlier this year, Lee-Scott Academy had one of its biggest days in its 40 plus years. The addition of a middle school for 7th and 8th graders was officially welcomed with a groundbreaking ceremony on September 8, 2022, on LSA’s campus.
With so many special guests in attendance, including our Founders’ Board, Board of Trustees, Mayor Ron Anders and the entire student body, this future space was prayed for and celebrated ahead of its opening in the 2023-24 school year.
The new 11,000-square-foot, $3 million building will include seven classrooms, two additional student bathrooms, a student services center, a secure shelter, and a learning center. Thanks to so much support from LSA families and via the school’s fundraising efforts, the entire project is paid for and allows LSA to remain debt-free.
Warrior Word 8
"The purpose of these new classrooms isn’t necessarily to add to our already student enrollment of 760, but to reduce class size and accommodate for more teachers so that the upper school can remain true to the school’s goal of providing small class sizes.”
- DONNA LLOYD UPPER SCHOOL PRINCIPAL
With its location in between the current upper school building and activities building, the middle school gives 7th and 8th grade students at LSA their own space to learn, grow and get to know each other better. At LSA, it is a privilege to prepare students for all that will and could lie ahead for them at each different developmental stage. For these students, a brand-new middle school building allows their own space to do just that.

Clubs & Organizations
It’s so important that students get connected with others and find friends they enjoy. At LeeScott Academy, much of that happens through student clubs and organizations. This is instilled in students at LSA from when they start in the Lower School. Teachers have sponsored clubs to engage students in a variety of fun-filled, educational experiences and the LSA Lower School had over 150 students who chose to sign up and participate in varying clubs. Teachers devoted after school hours to host clubs and many of these clubs have become the hands and feet of Christ in our work for the community. In the Upper School, a Club Fair is hosted each year to provide students an opportunity to explore clubs and to discover ways to get involved. Because so many of our students are involved in sports and after school activities, a club schedule was initiated to give club members an opportunity to meet within the school day. The goal for every student is to get involved with a variety of clubs and to make connections to one another.

Lower School Club Highlights
MADE TO CREATE CLUB
Based on a book by a local artist and author, this club is hosted by Lower School Art Teacher, Mrs. Laurin Beard, and 5th grade teacher, Mrs. Stephanie Parrish. The club uses scripture to create art and projects all through the lens of God’s word.
KICKS (Kids Involved In Community Kindness and Service)
This leadership club offers students the opportunity to serve Lee County, sponsor student-led projects and a chance to be on our school news broadcast.
LSA BAKING CLUB
Sponsored by our 4th grade teachers, this club teaches students basic recipes, works with various kitchen tools and creates some yummy treats for their families. It has been an absolute hit for many of our students in varying grades.
GLORY GIRLS
Through studying the word of God and relating it to their realworld situations to navigate with a Christian spirit, these girls have developed friendships and relationships with each other. This club has helped prepare some of our Lower School girls for situations far bigger than anything academic.
Upper School Club Highlights
SCHOOL SPIRIT CLUB
The School Spirit Club is excited about athletic programs and looks for ways to encourage student involvement. Great school spirit helps our teams to be their best and provides opportunities for students to show support. This leadership group organizes events for students to show school pride.
STUDENT MINISTRY CLUB
The Student Ministry Club is a group of upperclassmen who are instrumental in organizing and leading our weekly small group devotions in the Upper School. Their leadership is also visible in planning the monthly Chapel services. The students' talents are on display as they honor our Lord through their service to others.
CLEAN PLANET CLUB
This club is made up of students who are interested in recycling and maintaining a clean campus which has an impact on our community. The civic minded students work hard throughout the year to pick up paper and plastics for recycling. They are also responsible for organizing “LSA Serve Day.”
VIDEO GAMING CLUB
This exciting club is designed for video gaming enthusiasts. The opportunity for participation is provided in a socially acceptable way to explore and compete with each other using video games under the supervision of our IT staff.
Warrior Word 13
Arts
Arts at LSA continues to grow and expand by the year. It serves as a special place for many of our students and displays so much of the talent that is on our campus.
We have had continued leadership this year from our band students. The band received superior ratings at every contest in concert and Jazz Band last academic year. Several students were chosen for Honor and All-State District, All-State and All-State Jazz Band and one member selected for the Gold Band. During the summer, LSA was well represented at the Auburn University Band Leadership Camp. Four students earned spots in the Auburn University High School Symphonic Honor Band and fourteen earned spots in the Auburn University Honor Marching Band. Additionally, the Concert Band received perfect scores at the Alabama Bandmaster Music Performance Assessment. The exceptional Lee-Scott Academy dance team also worked closely with our marching band. These girls were able to express so much creatively through dance and have become one of the absolute best parts of many of the athletic and non-athletic events at LSA.
Last spring, our theatre department presented a drama showcase displaying the talents of our students. They were able to perform pieces selected by the students. Additionally, students attended the Alabama Thespian Society meeting in Birmingham where students were selected for AISA Drama Contest and also AISA All-Cast Drama Members.
Music enrichment, taught by Mrs. Allyson Petrone, allows students the opportunity to explore their talents in singing while also introducing students to different instruments and teaching them how to read music. At Christmas, grades Pre-K through 6th sang and presented a drama at the Grandparents Day performance, and in the spring, they shared their talents once again at the Easter musical. The LSA Singers is a Lower School Club, with students in grades 3rd-6th, who meet to sing as a group to various themes determined by the director. This club also gives its members the opportunity to audition for solos and speaking parts.
Our art department continues to show excellence as seen in artwork submitted by our students at the school, district and state levels. We had numerous students place in the school art show in categories like photography, drawing non-color, painting, mixed media, printmaking and more with many being recognized at the district and state level. Lee-Scott students begin their formal art instruction in Pre-K with Mrs. Laurin Beard. She teaches discipline-based art education which focuses on teaching children across four disciplines: aesthetics, art criticism, art history and art production.
Students in Pre-K through sixth grade have weekly instruction that exposes students to various artists and mediums, often starting with a book to incorporate literature. Students collect their pieces of art, creating an art portfolio at year’s end, complete with questions for parents to talk with their children about the art they’ve produced. One of the anticipated favorites for families is the sixth grade clay nativity project that children present to their parents at Christmas time.

Athletics
“Satisfied.”
Offensive coordinator Rick Wade ended each victory of the 2022 season telling the Lee-Scott Academy varsity football team that he was happy, but not satisfied. His goal was to continually remind them that each victory and each game was a journey leading to the ultimate prize.
On November 17, 2022, the Lee-Scott Warriors were able to say they’re finally satisfied when they raised the team’s fourth state championship in school history and first since 1994. A 12-0 dream season was capped after the Warriors beat their rival, the Glenwood Gators, 35-21 in the championship
game inside Montgomery’s Cramton Bowl. Beating opponents handedly all season long was a staple for the 2022 Warriors, with their closest game being the 14-point victory in the finale. Prior to that game, it was 19-points in another win over Glenwood earlier in the year.
The season was not without adversity. Senior quarterback Ryan Dearing battled injuries, but was able to continue to lead his team by mentoring and coaching sophomore quarterback Pelzer Reaves. That level of commitment to the team combined with a defense that allowed just 71 points all season long and a record-setting offensive machine helped make dreams come true and deliver new hardware on Academy Drive.
In his third season at Lee-Scott Academy, Head Coach Buster Daniel was able to taste the feeling of winning the final game of the season after
building the program back up upon his arrival. From a 2-7 record in 2020 to 8-3 and a semifinals appearance in 2021, it made all the trials and hard work worth it this year.
Senior linebacker Dalan Bush, one of 18 seniors who endured the turnaround, recapped the fairytale that was the 2022 season best when explaining to Opelika-Auburn News just how much work had gone into the moment when they could raise that trophy. “It just means a lot to me because of how much work I put in every single year to get to this last moment, especially in my senior year. I couldn’t ask for anything better,” Bush said. “It just shows that all the hard work we’re putting in, it really does pay off.”
Paid off it did, satisfied they are, and champions they’ll forever be.
Congratulations to the Lee-Scott Academy Warriors, the 2022 AISA Class AAA State Champions!

Tim Hudson Named Lee-Scott Academy Baseball Coach
17-YEAR MLB VETERAN & FORMER AUBURN PITCHING COACH
In August 2022, Lee-Scott Academy announced a new addition, but familiar face in the community, to its school family. The school named 17-year MLB veteran pitcher and former Auburn University volunteer assistant and pitching coach Tim Hudson as its new head baseball coach.
After an incredibly successful two-year career playing at Auburn University featuring a trip to the College World Series, Hudson was selected by the Oakland Athletics in the sixth round of the 1997 baseball draft. From there, he spent 17 years in the major leagues with the Oakland Athletics, Atlanta Braves and San Francisco Giants. He finished his career with a 222-133 record, a 3.49 ERA, was named a four-time MLB All-Star and won the 2014 World Series while with the Giants. Since retiring, Hudson has been inducted into the Braves Hall of Fame (2018) and the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame (2018).
In 2020, Hudson returned to the Auburn area and was named the volunteer assistant and pitching coach for the Auburn University baseball program. Under his tutelage, eight Auburn pitchers were selected across three MLB Drafts, including five in the 2022 MLB Draft. Now, he takes the helm at a place he grew up playing against.
“We are fortunate to have a coach and a man like Tim Hudson coming to lead the young men of our baseball program at Lee-Scott,” said Warriors’ Athletic Director William Johnson. “Tim's success at the highest level of baseball and his knowledge will serve our young men well both in the game
of baseball and in the game of life. While Tim and his family have long been involved with Lee-Scott Academy, we are incredibly honored and excited to welcome him to the Lee-Scott Family in his new role!”
Tim and his wife, Kim, have been married since 1999. They have three children, Kennedie, Tess and Kade. Kennedie is a 2019 graduate of LeeScott Academy while Kade is currently a senior at LSA. Tim and Kim also co-founded the Hudson Family Foundation in 2009 with a commitment to identify areas of need in local communities, including children and
families in need of physical, emotional and/or financial assistance. Their family worships at Church of the Highlands in Auburn.
“We are extremely excited to welcome Coach Tim Hudson to LSA. Tim brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our school and his proven track record of making the most of his opportunities impressed the search committee,” Head of School Dr. Stan Cox states. “Tim will bring the community together both on and off the field in his efforts to further the success of our baseball program.”

Spiritual Emphasis
It’s an essential piece of our mission statement that sets Lee-Scott Academy apart from all the other schools in our area: “biblical, Christ-centered principles.” At LSA, nurturing the spiritual lives of our students as committed disciples of Jesus Christ is integral to our mission. Our faculty and staff living out their Christian faith for our students is foundational to our every endeavor, whether academic, social, athletic, or artistic. We approach every aspect of our well-rounded, whole-person educational program from the perspective of timeless principles focused on Christ and founded in His Holy Word, preparing our students for a lifetime of seeking first the Kingdom of God. It’s for that reason, we purposefully participated in activities that drew all of us closer to Christ throughout the past school year.
From the oldest to the youngest in our school, all attend a form of chapel. Each month our students and staff gathered for a time of chapel worship. Members of the Upper School Student Ministry Team were given the responsibility of leading part of each chapel service. Each week, we held a separate chapel for PreK students, where they heard from guest speakers (faculty members, local pastors, missionaries and college athletes) on topics relevant to their specific time of life.
It’s imperative that before each school year a passage of scripture is selected to serve as our theme for the academic year. The passage chosen provides the overarching theme for our weekly chapel services and often emphasizes a specific character trait we wish to build up in our students. During the 2022-23 school year, that theme was service accompanied by Joshua 24:15, “choose you this day whom you will serve… but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” For this school year, we want our students to learn the importance of choosing the Lord in their own lives, but also using their love for Christ to serve others daily.
Covering our campus and our students in prayer is pivotal to all we do at LSA. Our faculty knows this perhaps better than anyone. Once a week, faculty in the Upper School gathers to pray for each other and our students. As they stand together in prayer, they focus their attention on the One who guides us. It is always a great way to start each week seeking the Lord’s wisdom as they teach and work together to be examples of his light to our young people. His word tells us that when two or more people are gathered together, He will be there also. That has certainly been the case each week in these gatherings.
Lee-Scott is a special school because we are able to pray openly and share our faith with each other. It’s unfortunately rare in today’s world, especially the education system, but it’s a source of strength for our students and faculty. We want our students to graduate with a strong academic foundation and a desire to serve others, but also a faith guided by
the truths of Christ. Weekly devotional small groups emphasize this even further and have become a unique time for students. We pause weekly, share a devotion and pray and support each other together. To watch our older students become committed to leading our middle school students is wonderful and a perfect example of discipleship Christ calls us to live out.
In all of these ways, LSA comes together and grows spiritually. However, understanding the importance of service to others is something that is valued at our school. We would be wrong to dismiss the commandments of Christ to love our neighbors and deprive our students, faculty and staff the opportunity to serve our community. One of the ways we do this as an entire school is through our annual live nativity. We had over 400 guests last year! We always look forward to seeing the community. With live actors, music, and animals in an elaborately decorated set, our family-friendly live nativity is an interactive outdoor walk-thru experience that recreates that special moment: the birth of Christ. Students are also required to complete community service hours prior to graduation. Many of our students serve the community through their church and other nonprofit organizations. During the summer, our students often participate in mission trips. The SGA, Leadership Class and Student Ministry Team provided leadership to our students as we gave to those around us. We provided donations to the East Alabama Food Bank, Our House, Exceptional Foundation of East Alabama, and Azalea Place.
In the years ahead, LSA will strive to prepare our students for all the battles they’ll face, especially spiritual ones. During each school year, LSA students, faculty and staff all grow in their walks with the Lord. Sharing that with those around us in our community is not only what we feel commanded to do, but is a joy.

Grandparents Society
The first organized Grandparent Society (GPS) was initiated to be more intentional with inviting our grandparents into Lee-Scott Academy. As the GPS Club unfolded, we have benefited from our grandparents’ wisdom and guidance through their involvement in a variety of areas. Whether it’s putting Lee-Scott on their daily prayer list, volunteering in classrooms, working with students, reading to classrooms, attending events, or sending in testing treats to the Upper School, we were able to build many relationships! It is a joy to have this special group on campus and involved with our student body. Grandparents are sent informative newsletters about current events at LSA and invitations to attend special events throughout the year. Our grandparents have made us better all the way from Pre-K to 12th Grade!

Alumni
The dictionary defines alumni as people who have attended or have graduated from a particular school, college, or university. At Lee-Scott Academy, alumni means so much more, but most importantly it means family. In 1981, two schools, Lee Academy and Scott Preparatory School joined together to form Lee-Scott Academy. As the schools joined so did the students and families and from that point on, it has been the Lee-Scott Academy family.
Our Office of Alumni Relations has been working to provide opportunities for our alumni to come back to campus and to fellowship with one another.
This fall semester, there were 3 alumni events:
• The Homecoming Reunion Tailgate invited all alumni back on campus before the Varsity Football Homecoming Game for a tailgate dinner before being recognized at the football game.
• The Band Alumni Event, which was organized by the Band Boosters, invited back all band alumni and even previous band directors. The alumni band had the opportunity to play on the field with the LSA Marching Band which took them back to those nights on the field and under the stadium lights sharing their talents with all the fans.
• Members of the Class of 1997 started their 25th year reunion by touring their alma mater and attending the Varsity Football game against Fort Dale Academy.
All of these events were meaningful because it reconnected the past with the present, bringing together the Lee-Scott family.
The Office of Alumni Relations is in the process of planning many events for the spring and fall of next school year. It is an exciting time at Lee-Scott and wonderful time to "come back home."

What have you been up to since LSA?
I attended Auburn University for four amazing years where I was actively involved in Alpha Omicron Pi sorority and Student Government Association. Just a week after graduating college, I moved to Mobile, Alabama to start Physician Assistant (PA) school at the University of South Alabama. After completing PA school, I moved to the Atlanta area where I started practicing as a PA in family medicine. As a PA, I am a healthcare provider that evaluates, diagnoses and treats patients of all ages. After two fulfilling years in family medicine, I recently transitioned into the dermatology field. During my education, I met my husband, Reagan, and we married in April of 2022 (our wedding reception was at the same place as my high school prom at LSA)! We live in Atlanta with our pets, Hamilton and Smoochie. What clubs or sports were you involved in at LSA? Cheerleading, track and field, SGA, yearbook
Favorite class/teacher at LSA? Too many to count! Mr. Fletcher and his English class had a huge impact on me. I loved Ms. Williams and her yearbook class, Mrs. Garner and AP United States history, and Dr. Stone and her many math courses. I am so lucky to have learned from them and many more teachers at LSA.
Favorite memory of time at LSA? Making my very best friends! My five best friends from LSA were all bridesmaids in my wedding and we talk still daily…just like in high school!

Current city: New York City, NY
Post-LSA education: Auburn University ’21 (Bachelor's in Supply Chain Management)
What have you been up to since LSA? I attended Auburn University where I studied supply chain management. During my time at Auburn, I had the opportunity to spend a summer working at a winery in Rome, Italy as a business intern and the opportunity to complete a six-month co-op with my current company, Unilever, on their rigid plastics procurement team which opened the door to my current role. Upon graduation from Auburn, I rejoined Unilever on their customer excellence supply chain team where I am now a senior Replenishment Planner for two customers that we supply our products to.
What clubs or sports were you involved in at LSA?
During my time at Lee-Scott, I was involved in Student Government Association, a member of the Ambassadors team, Key Club, Anchor Club, Spanish Club, FCA, Diamond Dolls, Yearbook and played volleyball.
Favorite class/teacher at LSA? My favorite class during my time at LSA was definitely yearbook. I participated in yearbook junior and senior year and had the privilege of spending countless hours with Ms. Williams as the yearbook editor. This class allowed me to tap into my creative side! It was evident that Ms. Williams cared deeply for her students through her attentiveness to detail while creating the yearbook and ensuring that not one person or fun memory would be left out even if that meant adding multiple pages (and hours) of work to the yearbook. Ms. Williams defined my experience at LSA and provided me with the best yearbooks to look back on of my 14 years at Lee-Scott!
Favorite memory of time at LSA? My favorite memory at Lee-Scott must be homecoming week! It was so always so much fun dressing up on the themed days, creating a flat with your classmates, the black light pep rally, and of course attending the football game & then the homecoming dance!

What have you been up to since LSA? My journalism career has taken me in many different directions. At the beginning stages of my career, I served as a podcast host and football scout/writer, which took me all over the southeast to study and learn football and network with some cool folks. I blended that career with being a co-host on a local sports talk show, SportsCall Auburn, and I loved every minute of that. After interviewing sport icons and working with an awesome group of people, I will always cherish my moments there. I then moved to the corporate world and began a career in the Brand & Creative Services department at Aflac HQ in Columbus, Georgia. In my current studio writer role, I work closely with the marketing team to create fun and compelling pieces of content that promote our strong brand at Aflac. From social media posts to commercial spots to interacting with the Aflac duck, there is never a dull day at the office. In my personal life, I can’t get enough of cooking and gardening. I like to play in the dirt for fun and see results of hard work come to fruition, literally. Trying out innovative
recipes and researching the basis of growing a garden are two things that make me happy - and tending to my pug, Lilo. What clubs or sports were you involved in at LSA? JV basketball, newspaper, yearbook, public address announcer for baseball, termite football coach
Favorite class/teacher at LSA? English with Mr. Leon Fletcher was tough at the time, but an invaluable experience. Realizing the overall intent of encouraging us to critically think makes me even more grateful –especially in my career. His wit and random stories also made for some fun class periods.
Favorite memory of time at LSA? Coaching the powder puff football team to a 2-0 record created some fun moments. It was great having the whole class come together – and yes, that includes the cheerleaders and dance team. Being selected as prom king was special and knowing that I made a positive impact on all my classmates was a great feeling.

Since January 2021, I have been meeting with leadership donors to share my vision and plan for LSA. I am overwhelmed by the support received and am excited about the impact the funds raised during the campaign has made on our campus, students, and faculty.
Because of gifts made to the Impact Tomorrow Today campaign, we have been able to:
• Remove and replace the bleachers in Samford Gymnasium
• Repair and replace the infield of the Dr. Don Roberts Track and Field and install lighting
• Replace the floor in the small gymnasium with additional funds given by PTO
Imp actTomo owTod a y
• Provide all full-time faculty and staff with long-term disability insurance
• Provide a monetary bonus to our faculty and staff
• Secure an architect and begin the building of a Middle School addition to the current Upper School Building which will include seven additional classrooms, a large learning center, a student services center that includes a middle school guidance counselor’s office, and office space for the upper school’s instructional coach. The additional 11,000 square feet also includes restrooms for boys and girls and a teacher work room with restroom facilities.
To date, we have received cash gifts, pledges, and gifts-in-kind totaling approximately $3.7 million. This capital campaign has been very successful and very much needed to provide our students, faculty and administration with the facilities that are needed to provide a premiere educational experience. We are blessed beyond measure for the donations made to this campaign and feel especially thankful to our Lee-Scott family for their continued support.
