It is great to be back at work after my family holiday, you have all been so busy. Thank you for being patient with me during my time off. I hope you all like our new magazine designed by Gina from Groovy Graphics. We have a full calendar of events for you which includes cut off dates for events and advertising, plus a huge announcement for you all which could benefit your business hugely see page 10 for more details.

It is great to see the support for the Townsville Expos as we are fully booked out for July 16th and we are taking early bird bookings for November 26th Expo (reminder: this will be single sites only). Our SE QLD Expo didn’t go quite as well as expected but as we were introducing a new concept to the area I think it went well. We raised over $1000 for our community group, looking forward to next year.

Handy Hints and Tips when importing and re-selling By Cynthia Tatters from Cynthia’s Petti-Skirts I am a mum of 2 Children, Isaac (3 years) and Michaela (9 Months) I live on the North Side of Brisbane and run a small home based business called Cynthia’s Petti-Skirts. I have been importing products from overseas for about 5 years now. I started out in the Beauty Industry as a Beauty Therapist. So part time I started to import Nail tips, Nail stickers and Nail products for Salon Suppliers. I did this just to earn a bit of extra money. Now I am a full time mum and I want to stay home with my kids so I started up Cynthia’s Petti-Skirts and now I import skirts, tops and anything frilly!! When I was setting up my importing business I wish there was someone to help me along the way. But unfortunately I did it all on my own and was hurt very badly financially and really shook my confidence. Now that I have been importing for about 5 years I regularly get asked how to start, what do I look out for and most importantly who can I trust?? As a mum and business owner I am happy to help anyone out who is interested in learning. But I am going to share a few tips with you about importing. Firstly when searching for a product you would like to sell try and find the manufacturer, rather than a trading company. You want to buy for the maker of the product not the reseller of the product. Also be aware that most Brand name products will have licensing rights so when buying form China there is a very good chance it isn’t the “original” brand it is a copy. Once you have found or decided on what you want to purchase you need to make sure you can trust the seller so I always suggest asking them to send you a sample of the product first to check the quality. Not only that you want to make sure they are a real company. In doing this process it may be Page 6

a good idea to have a fedex or dhl account set up as some companies send free samples as long as you pay for the freight. When you have received the product and like the quality you will want to import a larger amount. So the nest hurdle is how do I safely send money over seas?? There are a lot of options to send money. Before you send any money talk to your bank about what sort of fraud protection they have when sending money by telegraphic transfer overseas. If they don’t have any I would suggest you find a bank that does, If you send $7000 or more overseas and never see any product you need to know you bank or credit card provider will be able to get that money back. Another option is to pay by Paypal as they have a great fraud protection system in place. It may cost you a little extra in fees but I think the security is worth it. Or another site is Escrow they also have a great service where by you send the money to a 3rd party; they hold the money until you receive the product. Once the product is received the 3rd party will release the money to the manufacturer. Never and I say Never pay by Money order as it is untraceable. It is like giving cash to someone overseas. This is ok when sending money to a friend or someone you know but not with purchasing product. Once you have received your product you are now ready to on sell. If you want to know more about how to source products, a step by step lesson on how, where and what including setting up a business and how to on sell your product. I do private tutoring lessons for $200 for 3 hours. You can contact me on cynthia@cynthiaspetti-skirts.com
