Introduction Blackwood Primary School is committed to professional learning. This case study is to highlight the journey taken over several years to develop a Foundation Phase philosophy from Nursery through to Year Six as a focus for pedagogical knowledge and curriculum design.

Context Blackwood Primary is in Caerphilly local authority. Current roll is 416 with 15 classes and a two form entry including a nursery and Rising 3s. 22% percent of pupils are eligible for eFSM and 16% have ALN. Very few pupils are from a minority ethnic background or Welsh first language.

Vision and Four Purposes The school vision was created by all stakeholders at BLKPS.

The Pupil Leadership Team created the four purpose characters with supporting stories providing context for the skills.

Growth Mindset @BLKPS

All children use Growth Mindset and the Learning Pit in their lessons. They create their own Learning Pits to refer to. Every class has a Growth Mindset display.

Professional Learning @BLKP Changes made at BLKP are informed by research and action research activities. Shared with stakeholders through learning posters on school website.

Continuous Provision Enhanced Provision Facilitated Learning Direct Teaching

Learning Environment- AoLEs Each area has rules that include an Elklan approach. These ensure that all learners are clear of expectations. Areas are made up of different levelled tables and chairs for learners to utilize.

Woodwork around school with supporting planning Woodwork is popular and provides a rich source of enjoyment as well as learning. It helps develop children’s imagination and creativity as well as practical skills. The impact is long term. All staff have received intensive Woodwork training in order to support children in developing skills.

Block Play progression All year groups have construction areas where building skills are developed and LNF skills are applied. Learning experiences are based in creative problem solving contexts.

DT- Cooking Provision All year groups have built in kitchens ‘cooking stations’. Children plan, measure ingredients, cook and evaluate recipes applying their LNF and DCF skills through practical ‘real life’ context.

Outdoors Outdoor provision is used daily to enhance children’s learning through a variety of rich experiences.

Enhanced Provision- Instructional Boards Blended learning approach taken to support learning in AoLE’s and further develop independent learning. QR codes provide tutorials or support materials. LNF and DCF skills are threaded through learning experiences.
