at the net. Offensively we should be extremely solid. Weaknesses: Aside from a few key returning players, we are a fairly young team.

Key starters lost: Makena Bowen and Mia Stella

What is your can’t-miss game this fall? Either Niles or Buchanan.

Key returning lettermen: Grace Polomcak, Olivia Thomas, Audrey Longley and Bethany Duval.

Other than winning all your games, division or conference championships and making the state playoffs, what other team goals do you set? First and foremost is to never give up, not on yourself and most certainly not on your team. Whether it’s practice or a match, no matter who is across the net, and most importantly no matter what the score is give it all you have. Always.

How do you think your players handle the highs and lows of winning and losing, and how do you coach that? I expect that during any victory you remain very humble and to treat the opposing team with the respect you would appreciate if the roles were reversed. Losing should always be handled with dignity and accountability. After a loss, it becomes entirely too easy to play the blame game and have an excuse for everything. Instead of wasting time coming up with excuses for the loss, take accountability.

Other than winning all your games, division or conference championships and making the state playoffs, what other team goals do you set? Minimal mental mistakes and take care of the little things you can control. We have a very tough schedule, with our inexperience we must manage the game by not hurting ourselves with mistakes. This will lend us a chance to accomplish the more obvious goals.

AUGUST 24 Berrien Springs, 7 p.m. 31 Watervliet, 7 p.m.

OCTOBER 6 @ Berrien Springs, 7 p.m. 13 @ Brandywine, 7 p.m. 20 Benton Harbor, 7 p.m. certainly, the will to work hard stands out. Weaknesses: Varsity in-game experience. The group lacks depth in varsity game experience in some of the key positions on offense. What is your can’t-miss game this fall?

BUCHANAN BUCKS

FOOTBALL

How do you think your players handle the highs and lows of winning and losing, and how do you coach that? The key is to not get too high or low. A football game and certainly a season are full of both. So, we need to stay composed and not let it be any more than what it is. Use it for its learning and move on. I feel that is always a challenge within the game/season for all teams in any sport. The way you handle your success and failures will often be reflective on your seasons success, so we will see.

SOCCER Years coaching sport/at current school: First year Key starters lost: We lost many seniors last year, however I don’t have access to that information at this time. We did lose our goalie (Jake Hearington) to graduation, so that was a big loss. We also lost a strong forward (Tevin Tyler). Key returning lettermen: Brendan Dodson, Jacob Aalfs, Lane Herman and Evan Nowak Top newcomers: Antonio Alvarado

Strengths: We have a hardworking group that wants to learn and grow as a team. It is a very coachable group. Weaknesses: Lack of numbers. We lost a lot of seniors last year so this is a growing season and we are looking to build from here. What is your can’t-miss game this fall? Bridgman Other than winning all your games, division or conference championships and making the state playoffs, what other team goals do you set? Building team chemistry and continued improvement of mental toughness and knowledge of the game.

How do you think your players handle the highs and lows of winning and losing, and how do you coach that? It’s never any fun to lose, so it is our goal to work on mental toughness and grow together as a team. I tell my players that the measure of your strength is measured on how much you focus on your weakness. This is how I coach, this is the focus of our captains and we will work together to overcome the highs and lows as a team.

Weaknesses: We are young and we have few returners from last year. What is your can’t-miss game this fall? Brandywine Other than winning all your games, division or conference championships and making the state playoffs, what other team goals do you set? Our goal this year is to play as a team and become better every day. We will be a young team with few returners, so we will need to work hard in practice and play together as a team to win big

games. Everyone on the court will have a big impact in order to win this year. How do you think your players handle the highs and lows of winning and losing, and how do you coach that? Having a strong foundation of what a “team” really means is crucial in overcoming hard parts of the season. We win as a team and lose as a team, and we will overcome any challenge that comes our way if we all believe in each other. What has the team improved on most during the offseason? We have been working very hard this summer on becoming a team and working together. Our skill focus has been on improving serve receive and defense.

TENNIS

OCTOBER 7 @ BCS Tournament, TBA 10 @ Dowagiac, 4 p.m.

Coach: Erin Kratky (10-11-6) Years coaching sport/at current school: This is my fourth year coaching boys tennis and my eighth year coaching tennis at Buchanan. Last year’s record/place in conference: 3-5-1; fourth-place BCS Athletic Conference Key starters lost: Chris Wentworth and Mark Mcclaran Key returning lettermen: Jaxon Rehmel, Robby Fay, Kaleb Pritchard, Hunter Riggins, Sarah Bianchi and Brighton Lee Top newcomers: Thomas Matuszewski and Rylen Baker Strengths: These players have a lot of drive.

Their work ethic on the court is phenomenal. They all want to get better and are pushing themselves and their teammates to work hard. Their passion for tennis shows through in their dedication and is creating a fun, hardworking atmosphere. Weaknesses: Time. We could always use more time to practice, but they work hard with the time we have and are showing a lot of improvement. Other than winning all your games, division or conference championships and making the state playoffs, what other team goals do you set? I’m really looking for this team to grow together. We have a great group of players. I hope to see them bond, encourage each other, and push each other. I hope they end the season as dedicated and hard working as they have started the season.

How do you think your players handle the highs and lows of winning and losing, and how do you coach that? Each match is different and every player has days that they handle their wins and losses differently. Typically if they have played well and lost against a better player they tend to handle the loss well. It’s when they have had a bad day or made mistakes in a match that they beat themselves up. As a coach I try to use it as a teachable moment to become a more consistent tennis player. Also, it’s a lesson in life. Sometimes we have good days and sometimes we have bad days. I encourage them not to dwell on it and get back out on the court and improve.

BUCHANAN BUCKS

In front from left: Kadin Mills, Rylen Baker, Sarah Bianchi, Benjamin Bristol, Cassandra Hale-Nicholls, Zeke Furst; second row: coach Erin Kratky, Thomas Matuszenski, Samuel Poole, Kaleb Pritchard, Jaxon Rehmel, Brighton Lee, Robby Fay, Hunter Riggins, assistant coach Rachel English.

What has the team improved on most during the offseason? The team has improved in their groundstrokes and getting to the ball.

CROSS COUNTRY BUCHANAN BUCKS

Coach: Kristin Baker Years coaching sport/at current school: Varsity for five years Last year’s record/place in conference: Did not place on the boys side; fifth-place on the girls side Key starters lost: We did not lose any key runners. Key returning lettermen: Girls: Emily Riley, Jade Smith and Kalie Schram; Boys: Kevin Frost and Garret Lollar (late in the season) Top newcomers: Boys: Kelsey Brown and Zach Young Strengths: The girls team will return all of its lettermen from last year. They will be led by

16

Emily Riley who is looking strong coming off of her summer training. The boys team will be led by returning senior Kevin Frost and incoming sophomore Kelsey Brown, who is showing great potential in his first week of practice. Weaknesses: We have a lot of new runners out that just need to gain some confidence and endurance. We are low on boys numbers and our number one returning boy Garrett Laurer has a fracture in one of his foot bones and is out for the majority of the season. What is your can’t-miss game this fall? I encourage everyone to get out to the Red Bud Invite and experience the excitement of XC racing on RedBud’s Motocross grounds. Other than winning all your games,

division or conference championships and making the state playoffs, what other team goals do you set? We are setting a team goal for each runner to have a personal best by the end of the season and to have a scoring five boys for the entire season. How do you think your players handle the highs and lows of winning and losing, and how do you coach that? I have a great group of runners who work together and support each other. My philosophy is to set the bar high for each individual on their personal times and goals. I push kids to do things they think they are not capable of doing. If the team has an off day I take the responsibility and I look at how we are practicing. If its individuals I talk with them about good days and bad and we move on.

Coach: Austin Francis (26-35-1); Assisted by Ryan McCall Years coaching sport/at current school: Entering fourth season Last year’s record/place in conference: 10-11 Key starters lost: None. We were very young last year. Key returning lettermen: With being so young last year we return everyone and each has a role that they play. and all of our starters now have at least a year of experience. We have seven seniors that are working very hard and are determined to finish their high school careers with a bang. Weaknesses: Figuring out how to best utilize each player’s gifts and how to build the right chemistry with adding so many new players. Thankfully, we have good leadership in our upperclassmen and I have high expectations of each of them leading by setting a positive example.

Top newcomers: We have about six to seven incoming freshmen with a few that have the potential to step right into starting roles which I’m excited to see push our current starters. We also have Eian Forrest back, who took last year off to play football. He is a fast and talented player with good vision that could change the way we play a bit.

What is your can’t-miss game this fall? With being in a completely new conference it is hard to tell. However, it seems that Hartford has had a consistently strong program, so the home game on Sept. 11 should be a good test for us. Also, there has been a fun rivalry built between us and Howardsville Christian as many of the players know each other. Even though it isn’t a game that decides anything, it is one that usually brings quite a crowd and excitement. Last season, it ended in a penalty kick shootout after intense overtime halves. That game is at Howardsville on Oct. 3.

and making the state playoffs, what other team goals do you set? From a soccer perspective, I would like to see us have more defensive shutouts and maintain better possession of the ball. Also, every opposing coach knows Kiambu Gary is a huge scoring threat for us, but I would like to see us become a more balanced team in scoring and making teams work harder not just against him, but every single player we put on the field. From an off-the-field perspective, we really coach the values of respect, integrity, responsibility of your choices and actions, and going the extra mile. We encourage them to always remember that they are representatives of not just their team, but also their families, school, community, etc. What has the team improved on most during the offseason? I am impressed by the increased level of leadership in some of our seniors, one of the main ones being Keyshawn Works. He has been fairly quiet during his high school career, but lately has stepped up. As a team, we are also developing a much better knowledge of the game and seem to be seeing the field better and faster in order to make the right decisions.

do you coach that? As I stated earlier, one of our team goals is to leave every game feeling like we gave it our all. So, if we do that and end up losing, I still believe we are winners because we accomplished our goal. I try to teach my girls to look at every loss as a way to improve.

We are also very well balanced in our offensive backfield with several quality running backs. I also feel that we have a good core of linebackers defensively that get to the ball and hit. Weaknesses: Our defensive backs are untested and lack experience. We are trying to find replacements for four seniors that played a significant role in our defense last year. Our kicking

game is also a concern. We are still looking for an effective kicker and punter. What is your can’t-miss game this fall? Dowagiac, who is a natural rival and a strong opponent, should be a great game. Other strong teams in the conference include Three Rivers, Plainwell and Paw Paw. Other than winning all your games, division or conference championships and making the state playoffs, what other team goals do you set? On a game-to-game basis our goals are to create three or more turnovers, give up less than 200 total yards and hold our opponent scoreless. Offensively we look to have zero turnovers, 400-plus yards and score on every possession.

What is your can’t-miss game this fall? Oct. 2 at home against Plainwell, Oct. 11 at home against Sturgis Other than winning all your games, division or conference championships and making the state playoffs, what other team goals do you set? Improve every day, Academic All-State, playing our best soccer come tournament time. How do you think your players handle the highs and lows of winning and losing, and how do you coach that? I coach teenagers. There are lots of highs and lows every single day. I think the players handle them fairly well — I’d even say better than the average teenager. I coach players to live in the moment, but to stay grounded. Understand our goals; give everything you have to obtaining them, yet still remember that high school soccer will be only a small piece of your life. Make memories every day.

EDWARDSBURG EDDIES 38

Top newcomers: Jocelyn Hack (right side/middle blocker) and Megan Gallagher (defensive/libero)

Other than winning all your games, division or conference championships and making the state playoffs, what other team goals do you set? Those are big goals already stated but I think my goal for this season is to get some consistency on the court and figure out everyone’s role. A big piece of success in volleyball is creating an understanding of who does what, and assisting each other with each other’s weaknesses. I am a big believer that setting expectations very clear is always going to create a better team and hopefully lead to success. Building a program at EHS is a goal as well. I think this dynamic team is often overlooked and has so much potential — that makes me excited — and it is why I agreed to come back to Edwardsburg.

Weaknesses: I would say having a new coach. I think they are unfamiliar with me, and I am new to the program, a second time around. The unknown of this is always something to work through. I am also unfamiliar with the Wolverine Conference so I am not sure what to expect from other teams, which can make strategizing a bit more difficult on my part.

What has the team improved on most during the offseason? There really was no off-season for the group as a whole because there wasn’t a coach until a couple weeks ago. I do know that many of these kids played club, and to me that says a lot because they are showing they have a true passion for the sport; which is something you cannot teach.

Coach: Sarah Strefling Years coaching sport/at current school: 18 years coaching volleyball. I coached 12 years at Edwardsburg, took five years off from Edwardsburg (coached at Krush) and now I am back at EHS. Last year’s record/place in conference: 7-2, fourth-place Wolverine Conference. Key starters lost: Girls: Ryan Drew; boys: Brock Eaves and Calob Besaw Key returning lettermen: Girls: Cameron Cleveland, Sophia Mick, Chloe Bartz and Zoe Pegura; boys: Killian Marshall, Adam Tredway and Cian Young Top newcomers: Jack Leman, sophomore Strengths: The girls have four out of the top five varsity runners returning which makes a great nucleus or core to build around. For the boys, sophomore Jack Leman has decided to run after having a very successful season in track and will be a great addition to the team. Cameron Cleveland and Chloe Bartz were on the 4x800 relay team that

40

went to state last spring in track and are providing great leadership as captains this year. Sophomore Sophia Mick qualified individually for the cross country state meet last year and I expect her to have an even better season this year as she is another year older and stronger. Cameron Cleveland also qualified individually for the 800 in track last spring and set a new school record in the 800. She has had a great summer and is also looking stronger. We also have the incredible opportunity of working with retired Notre Dame Coach Joe Piane, who unselfishly shares his time and invaluable expertise with the cross country and track teams at Edwardsburg. Weaknesses: Low numbers and lack of depth, but the student-athletes have a great attitude and work ethic. Other than winning all your games, division or conference championships and making the state playoffs, what other team goals do you set? Besides getting several individuals to qualify for state, I would love to see the girls qualify as a team as well.

In front from left: Jack Leman, Killian Marshall, Nic Colon; second row: Cian Young, Adam Tredway, Ben Kraus.

How do you think your players handle the highs and lows of winning and losing, and how do you coach that? I stress to the team that the long-term goal is always to peak at the end of the season, and consequently, early and midseason times may not be what they want them to be. There definitely will be meets that they won’t be rested for and they will have to compete in a few meets the day after a tough workout and use that meet as training. As a result, they might be disappointed with some of their times early on because they will be running on tired legs. But if they stay committed and follow the training program, hopefully they will run their best meet at the end of the season and qualify for state, or at the very least, end the season with a new PR. What has the team improved on most during the offseason? A small, but consistent, dedicated group of athletes trained all summer under the guidance of Martha Cleveland. Three members of the girls team also attended the GVSU cross country camp, which was a great experience for them. We have been incorporating some of the things they learned into our daily practice routines.

Strengths: This will be the second year with the offense and defensive system. Strong defense. Junior varsity coming off a winning season last year. There was great attendance and hard work in the off season. This will be our first full year with the offseason program. Team speed is also a strength. Weaknesses: Two good quarterbacks that need to gain varsity game experience. Multiple other starters that need game experience. What is your can’t-miss game this fall? All of them. It should be a fun and exciting season week in and week out.

Sept. 7 vs. Portage Central; Sept. 23 at Portage Northern Invitational Other than winning all your games, division or conference championships and making the state playoffs, what other team goals do you set? We are looking forward to defending the Vandenberg Invitational trophy for the eighth straight year. Team academic all-state as well as individual all-state players. Double-digit win season. How do you think your players handle the highs and lows of winning and losing, and how do you coach that? For Niles, it’s all about getting the entire program to buy into the Niles soccer brand and development. Every day we strive to be better than the day before and learn from our failures.

They know we have big shoes to fill and have spent their time this summer working to trust each other in their various positions in order to come out strong in SMAC Conference and regular play. All of our hitters have excellent scoring potential,

and our defensive backcourt is scrappy and quick. We are very excited to hit the court and start competing. We have an extremely tough schedule, and conference, which forces us to constantly compete at the highest level in order to win against some of the power houses in the state. Weaknesses: We are a young team and have a big block to replace from last year, but our younger players are gaining experience by the day and definitely have the hustle and drive to step into their new roles and compete at the highest level. What is your can’t-miss game this fall? Our match against Portage Central is always a can’t miss in the fall. We have been tied for first in the conference the past two years when it came time to face off. Our rivalry against Lakeshore also always makes for a great match. Other than winning all your games, division or conference championships and making the state playoffs, what other team goals do you set? We have set a goal as a team to win every set, one point at a time and to play Niles ball no matter who the competition is. We focus on being aggressive, playing with positive energy, on our tactics and strengths, on finding ways to score a point every time we touch the ball, and go into every match with the determination to dominate and not just compete. These girls strive to play for their teammates every time they step on the court.

leadership that sets the right example from day to day. As a whole, we have a very positive but yet competitive squad. This year’s team wants to beat each other in races — out of respect for one another. Never in a negative way. That’s why we have become a stronger team because they push each other. We have a very strong sophomore class. Weaknesses: Even though our sophomore class is strong, we are a very young and inexperienced squad compared to most of the schools in our league.

Top newcomers: Sydney Skarbek, Kayla Trueblood and Cassie Klingerman

What is your can’t-miss game this fall? Regionals, always regionals. It is what advances them to the state.

or conference championships and making the state playoffs, what other team goals do you set? Before the first invite each girl writes down their top three individual goals and top three team goals. The goals for all girls are to PR every race and become stronger as a team. This year, having a strong mindset before each practice and meet is a priority. St. Joe is a powerhouse in cross country. In the past beating them was unattainable in the team’s viewpoint. I never pushed it and focused on always trying to beat Lakeshore because they have quality teams. I walked into practice this morning and they have a new team goal and that is to beat St. Joe because they only lost to them by 10 points this past Friday night. I love the fact that they see themselves with the ability to beat them and not me telling them that they can by the end of the season.

Strengths: Girls are willing to listen, work to get better and they are athletic. Weaknesses: We need to improve our short game. We have too many strokes adding up around the greens. Other than winning all your games, division or conference championships and making the state playoffs, what other team goals do you set? We would like the entire team to improve each week. We set individual and team scoring goals each week. How do you think your players handle the

highs and lows of winning and losing, and how do you coach that? Our main concern is getting better throughout the year and to enjoy the experience. Golf is a lifetime sport that challenges a player’s patience, their integrity and their ability to push ahead when dealing with adversity. What has the team improved on most during the offseason? Some of the girls have worked on their game during the summer either playing in tournaments, practicing on the range or taking golf lessons from area professions like Chuck Pullen at Orchard Hills.
