Our VIC has it all

e all love a vacation.

When you take yours, how do you know where to go, what to see, where you’re going to sleep or eat? Google is a great tool, but often times we need something to hold in our hands that we can reference later on, or even someone to say to us, “Go here or there. This is a great spot to do that thing you love to do!” But where do you get that something to hold in your hands? How do you find those people who will suggest what you should do? Wouldn’t it be great if there was somewhere that had all of that information in one spot?

Recently, I was tagging along on a friends business trip to Kentucky. I hadn’t had a vacation in several years, so I wasn’t too picky about the destination.

Knowing that I was to be on my own all day while my friend was in meetings, and neither of us having any knowledge of the town we were in, my friend asked me, “What are you going to do while you’re here?” I didn’t know. So I figured my first stop would be that place where someone would tell me what to do and where to eat and how I could get to do that thing I really love to do. That place which had all of that knowledge waiting to be dispensed to me, a Visitor Information Center (VIC).

“Of course,” You say, chuckling to yourself, “we always stop at VICs. They have all of the news.” Port Townsend, a destination getaway, has one too! And people from all over the world drop in to

find out about all of the same stuff you want to find out about when you travel.

But think for a moment. Where do they get all of that knowledge? Who provides all of those rack cards and coupons and maps? The answer is, dear Chamber members, you do. You not only make our VIC overflow with information, but by virtue of the fact that VIC volunteers work with the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce to connect its members with visitors and locals, your business gets talked about far and wide.

Last year, the VIC sent out hundreds of information and relocation packets to people across the country, putting your information into thousands of hands.

Over 18,000 people came into the VIC in 2011, where volunteers talked about your businesses and sent visitors into your shops. Phone calls and e-mails were answered virtually every day of the year to answer questions such as, “I was in this shop once. It was near the water (or on the hill or out of town). It had lace curtains (or beautiful hand-made tables or men’s shirts). I can’t remember the name. Can you give me their phone number please?” Those questions constantly test VIC volunteers’ knowledge of what you have put in their minds and hands. And we thank you for it. We will continue to rise to the challenge and opportunity of serving anyone who enters the Port Townsend VIC for you. Because this is where people come when they need to know about the place they are about to fall in love with.

There are many welldocumented benefits to our communities and to each of us to choosing local, independently owned businesses. We realize it is not always possible to buy what you need locally and so merely ask you to Think Local FIRST!

Top Ten Reasons to Think Local - Buy Local - Be Local

1. Buy Local -- Support yourself: Several studies have shown that when you buy from an independent, locally owned business, rather than a nationally owned businesses, significantly more of your money is used to make purchases from other local businesses, service providers and farms -- continuing to strengthen the economic base of the community.

2. Support community groups: Non-profit organizations receive an average 250% more support from smaller business owners than they do from large businesses.

3. Keep our community unique: Where we shop, where we eat and have fun -- all of it makes our community home. Our one-of-a-kind businesses are an integral part of the distinctive character of this place. Our tourism businesses also benefit. “When people go on vacation they generally seek out destinations that offer them the sense of being someplace, not just anyplace.” ~ Richard Moe, President, National Historic Preservation Trust 4. Reduce environmental impact: Locally owned businesses can make more local purchases requiring less transportation and generally set up shop in town or city centers as opposed to developing on the fringe. This generally means contributing less to sprawl, congestion, habitat loss and pollution.

5. Create more good jobs: Small local businesses are the largest employer nationally and in our community, provide the most jobs to residents.

6. Get better service: Local businesses often hire people with a better understanding of the products they are selling and take more time to get to know customers.

7. Invest in community: Local businesses are owned by people who live in this community, are less likely to leave, and are more invested in the community’s future.

8. Put your taxes to good use: Local businesses in town centers require comparatively little infrastructure investment and make more efficient use of public services as compared to nationally owned stores entering the community.

9. Buy what you want, not what someone wants you to buy: A marketplace of tens of thousands of small businesses is the best way to ensure innovation and low prices over the long-term. A multitude of small businesses, each selecting products based not on a national sales plan but on their own interests and the needs of their local customers, guarantees a much broader range of product choices.

10. Encourage local prosperity: A growing body of economic research shows that in an increasingly homogenized world, entrepreneurs and skilled workers are more likely to invest and settle in communities that preserve their one-of-a-kind businesses and distinctive character.
